the sun reflected off of the neighbor's car made this weird stairwell shadow pattern where there is usually very little light
A shadow is an area where direct light from a light source cannot reach due to obstruction by an object. It occupies all of the space behind an opaque object with light in front of it. The cross section of a shadow is a two-dimensional silhouette, or reverse projection of the object blocking the light. The sun causes many objects to have shadows and at certain times of the day, when the sun is at certain heights, the length of shadows change.

i had fun exploring shadows today. it's interesting what catches my eye. some days it's reflections, other days it's shadows or bokeh or the list goes on (isn't that the lovely part of photography?)
Shadow on the cladding of the Aldi supermarket, Altrincham Retail Park, Manchester. Best seen in the Original size to see the texture in the cladding.
I thought the shadows looked so interesting as the light came into my living room and i had to capture it.

I played around for quite a while with these and I didn't think they were working until I viewed them on the computer and did a little editing.

Shadows from a fire escape fall across the front of a San Francisco building
I made this photograph late in the day back in early September, on a street photography shoot with a group of like-minded folks in San Francisco. We met in the late afternoon, wandered about for a while in the beautiful late-day light, then broke for dinner before going back out to photograph after dark.
One one hand, you could probably find a similar scene in many other cities. On the other hand, it also evokes the architecture of San Francisco, where buildings are packed tightly together, often with seemingly little regard for their aesthetic appearance when viewed from the street — with the result being very utilitarian facades, often featuring metal gates, fire escapes, and sometimes a worn and weathered appearance. This street runs almost directly east-west, so late in the day the sunlight was falling across the front of the building at a low angle and casting strong shadows.

One of the last sunny days of Summer - noticed the shadows cast by two glasses of wine on an outdoor table. Amazing the way the light is refracted through the stems of the glasses.
A sculpture by Steinunn Þórarinsdóttir called Skuggar (Shadows). The moon was full that night and casted a beautiful light on the sculpture, located at Suðurströnd, Seltjarnarnes in Iceland.
The work is composed of two aluminum figures who lean closely towards one another, but just short of touching. This is a running theme throughout her work: “Fundamentally, we are all alone,” she reflects. It’s not a matter of loneliness, but of independence. Trying to make a series of shadow on architecture that show a flat facade but the shadows show the structure.
The dark line in the sky is a contrail shadow . Shadow was cast on the layer of
cirrostratus cloud beneath the airplane. More about it is here

Sunset captured in the desert of southern California, near the Salton Sea. The overcast distant horizon showed little promise for anything spectacular, but then suddenly the light glimmered above the clouds, casting shadows all around the hills and mountains, creating incredible silhouettes!
