A few days ago, I woke uncharacteristically early, and couldn't get back to sleep. It was around 5am and just starting to get light. Rather than lie there restlessly, I got up and wandered into my office. I opened the curtains to see the sun peeking through the leaves on the trees opposite—it was only just above the horizon and on a level with my office window. As I turned back into the room, I noticed that the sun shining through the leaves was casting an intricate pattern of shadows on the back of my office door, rippling in the gentle morning breeze. I picked up the video camera that was on my desk, sat it pointing at the patterns, and recorded the slow progression of the sunlight across the door. After about five minutes, the show was over. The sun had risen higher in the sky and the shadows faded. I turned off the camera and went back to bed.
'Shadow lifting' is a very popular term used in many internet photography forums such as dpreview. The usefulness of this is hotly debated as well.
If you are not familiar with the term this is what it means.
In high contrast situations when you have set your exposure to preserve highlights (setting sun in this case) you end up with some very dark areas. In the past you couldn't do much with these dark areas because if you wanted to make these areas bright in Photoshop then all you got was a noisy mess. The situation is not that bad now. Exmor sensor made by Sony and used mainly by Sony and Nikon, is best in this regard. See the next picture.
The other sides of me that are rarely seen but are often thought about, and goals of what I want to be always walk with me wherever I go.

Mark ‘Spoonman’ Petrakis and I are developing a shadow puppet show we call ‘Ubu’s Dreams’.
This short series of sketches stars Père Ubu, the hero of french poet Alfred Jarry’s surreal plays. In this show, Ubu is constantly dreaming, playing with archetypal characters from our collective unconscious.
For this project, we are creating a variety of wooden figures with a laser cutter: big faces, music notes, dancers, trees and graveyards, to name but a few. We then tape our puppets on wooden sticks, and wave them across the stage to bring them to life, with a projector over our heads.
We plan to continue this experiment through the summer and perform a first puppet show during our Dada exhibit at the Canessa Gallery in North Beach, from Nov. 3 to 12, 2016.
I also plan to use some of these techniques with our lower and middle school students, for the Maker Art courses I will be teaching this fall.
From shadow puppets to poetic robots, these interactive storytelling experiments have the potential to engage us at a deeper level and help us learn more about ourselves.

A week ago today, my father was involved in a double write-off motor accident which could easily have taken him from us. 2 days later, my older son, Alex, was admitted to hospital for major spinal surgery, only to be sent home the next day because of a shortage of beds in Intensive Care. Yesterday, Shadow's already failing health took a dramatic turn for the worse. He had a major seizure in the morning and two more later in the day, leaving us no choice but to have him put to sleep.
Possibly the worst week of my life.
Shadow has been part of our family since Alex and Nick were 9 and 7. They are now both young men.
He was a playmate for Nick and a loyal guardian for Alex. He was also our baby. We will all miss him more than words can ever say.

This is part of a 40-yard walkway, with Ionic columns on either side and a series of parallel wood beams above. Shortly after noon, I captured the shadow cast by the beams. I briefly considered cropping out the columns and vertical shadow on the right side, but decided to leave them in. The result of this effort should definitely be an eye-catcher!

The colours of the picture are edited. But the shadow isn't. I was playing with my light and then I got this result.
The Shadow Caster was a Lancer-class pursuit craft used by the bounty hunter Ketsu Onyo. The Lancer-class pursuit craft was a patrol ship produced by MandalMotors.

I'm really happy with the CMF, but I'm saddened by the lack of yellow round plates available.
