I wore this top today while running around with DH. I got him to take some photos.

My friend Mandy is teaching me how to sew with a sewing machine and various techniques. We're making light-blocking curtains for my guest room. Today we made one entire panel - the other 5 should go faster... :)

I've been a little jazzed for crafts lately. Well, who am I fooling...I'm jazzed for crafts every freakin' day! This is a little project I've been working on called "The Haru Haruko Bag". It's a "work in progress" from the looks of my pics here, but I plan to finish it up soon...So more pics will pop up in this album. I've meant to make a large tote bag for a long time and I've been hording this vibrant dragon print fabric forever and a day...so it was only a matter of time until all these elements came together.

Pattern is from this awesome book called Amy Butler's Style Stitches.

Most of these pictures show the bag about 95% done. The interior of the bag is made of velveteen and cotton. Exterior is cotton and the sides and bottom panel are super sturdy cotton duck fabric. There are four lined pockets inside and four pockets at the sides of the bag. I need to sew button hole and the button...and attach the lining to the outer shell. After that, its all done. More pics are on the way since I plan to finish this up in the next couple days.

My Starbucks store is participating in the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life this weekend, and I volunteered to sew up some coffee sleeves to sell for donations. I am a major procrastinator, so of course I left them for the last minute.

This photo is from the middle stage of my project. I hadn't done the top-stitching around all the sides yet. Now they are pretty much done, I just have to sew on the buttons... Which happens to be my least favorite part of any sewing project.

They turned out cute and were actually pretty fast to whip up. I might make some more in the future.

What was once a pretty ugly neck tie is a really fun bowtie.

it's been a rather lazy saturday. sabin and i visited the fabric store on friday after her riding lesson and bought a few things to make an outfit for her. i whipped up the silver skinny leggings in no time flat (that synthetic silver material is a DREAM to work with, i tell you). i'm halfway on the shirt to go with it...it has that cute little japanese doll on it. i hope to finish it tomorrow, tho' the directions are iffy at best and i'm struggling a bit.

So this is my first sewing project! My mom has been sewing her entire life and I never sat still long enough to learn - but now I'm ready! We took the idea for making a t-shirt apron from: www.whatshotfortots.com/fathersday08.html (scroll down to download the pdf) but we added the pockets for collecting and finished off the edges. As you can see I have a long way to go! But I like the idea of making useful things.

Mom was great - when ever I screwed up she would make me go back and take out all of the stiches and do them over. I kept thinking - its just an apron, does it really matter?? but she'd say "It has to be RIGHT!" ;-)

Now all I need is my own machine - G has an extra one she said she would give me but I have to get to Wilmington to pick it up!

2/21/2014: The was a fantastic sale on patterns at the fabric store so I bought 10 patterns for $12! it was all very exciting, I assure you. (^_^); I got mostly costuming ones since I like making them for myself and my nieces. One of my sisters wants me to make a corset for her so I had to get one in her size as she is tiny.

View of quilted lining for Vogue 7975

From the book: Softies

the desk quilt finished

I made this little pincushion as part of my handsewing class at Sew L.A.

Side and shoulder seams basted for fitting prior to attaching lining. Added 1 inch seam allowances at sides. Ended up reducing some. I wanted to allow for fabric take up when it is quilted to lining.

I asked my mom, the talented seamstress, to make me a drawstring bag. She refused. Instead, she set up her sewing machine and talked me through the process of making the bag myself from scraps of fabric in her stash. It took about two hours of me learning how to use the sewing machine, cutting and measuring, making a paper pattern, and otherwise wrangling through the process. I was amazed it didn't take longer, but mom thought that with some practice it would take me about an hour after I'd had a chance to work on my skills a little more.

This is what designers do. They decide they need or want to do some sort of project. They work with a coach to learn how to do it, and learn the tools and processes they need to go through in order to make the project happen. Then they do it. Once they finish, they go through the process of figuring out what they did wrong, or what they could do better, and they think about how to make use of the tools more effectively next time, or what raw materials to substitute.

3/2/2014: I had a productive hour cutting out this pattern. I like keeping everything organized in bags. (It also helps them keep dry now that it's been raining.)
