Our family had to have some sort of vacation holiday and chose an area of the country that was less densely populated and with lower COVID-19 rates. It also happened to include North Dakota, a state none of us had been to and marks state #49 for Tamara. We had a wonderful trip, got labeled as "Covid-sensitive" at a restaurant (which we now bear as a badge of honor), and got to see and explore a lot of places that in a 'normal' year we probably would have missed out on.
This fern is fairly easy to identify because of its course-cut fronds. Also, the stems sometimes have a reddish color and the fruiting frond is rather unique to the species.

Threatened and sensitive species are a top priority of the Wildlife Program on the forest. Here an Eastern Massasauga rattlesnake (Sistrurus catenatus) was captured in a holding tube during processing for a multi-year mark and recapture study in partnership with Grand Valley State University. All wildlife handled by professionals with permits on the Cadillac Manistee Ranger District of the Huron-Manistee National Forests. USDA Forest Service photo by Maille O’Toole.
Also going by the name Cassia nictitans, this is another new native plant for me.
A native, erect, arching annual to 24 inches tall, the leaves are alternate, pinnately compound, with 7-20 pairs of linear-oblong leaflets, to 0.4 inch long, that are light and touch sensitive. The flowers are yellow, about 0.5 inch wide, not pea-like, with 5 unequal petals and 5 stamens, usually solitary in the upper leaf axils. They are seen July-September.
Found open places with acidic soils in most of the eastern U.S. and throughout Tennessee and north Alabama (where it is considered common).
The species name nictitans means "blinking, moving," Both species and common names of Wild Sensitive Plant indicate that it is senstive to touch or disturbance and imply that the plant would react quickly. In fact, the name is deceptive, and the leaves react disappointly slowly to disturbance, eventually floating.
Patridge Pea - Chamaecrista fasciculata, is a more robust plant with larger, showier flowers and 10 stamens.
