The 'Sensitive Fern' so called becuase of it's immeadiate die back at the lightest frost. One of its sensitivities not so often mentioned though is to touch - the stems are incredibly brittle and delicate so brushing past it is a no no, and weeding around them is very difficult. It is actually very root hardy and spreads to make dense carpets; this plant is growing happily at the base of an established bamboo clump and competeing with a Himalayan Mares tail for space -successfuly, which is no mean feat. The new leaves are a lovely red colour and as they mature this changes to a fresh yellow green with the red receding only gradually to the edges of the broad leaflets, a beautiful display.

This fern is fairly easy to identify because of its course-cut fronds. Also, the stems sometimes have a reddish color and the fruiting frond is rather unique to the species.
