Cropped just out of the frame, is Bill's GoPRO camera which he wears to document the controlled burns while volunteering his time with Dane County Parks. I should have known from just seeing that apparatus on his head that h would make the ideal subject for me to include in my 100 more strangers project today. As not to bug him to much during the first half of the burn, I let him do his job but I found while walking back he was the one who approached me. Ever curious to know who I was, and where the photographs would go.
We exchanged contact information, and then made conversation on the trail back to base. While I was walking, Bill was lucky enough to have an ATV for quick response to needs for water among all things. Working around fires for the better part of 50 years as a firefighter in Maple Bluff and the last 25 years with Dane County, he has seen his share of burns. But because he is always on duty and with the burns it's very critical to be on top your game, he finds that he is never able to take as many photos as he would like. Plus his boss likes to keep him in check and always maintains a busy regiment of work.
Shooting on a variety of Canon DSLR camera's he found them to be too bulky and heavy for lugging around during burns and recently invested in the GoPRO as well as a Canon P&S with the equivalent of 800mm zoom at the long end. Not to be left to unattached from the world, Bill enjoys taking photos with a group in arboretum in Madison on the third Wednesday of the month. As it was still a bit of a long stretch back to the base site, Bill offered me a ride on the back of the ATV so that I wouldn't be too extinguished by the time the next burn started; silly firefighter humor I tell you!
In parting I stretch out and invite you the reader of this to try out snapping photos of strangers. I've found the more that I do it. the better the stories become. Meeting all sorts of people with all sorts of backgrounds is definitely fun. I struggle the most with shooting photos of females, as I'm sure anyone viewing my photostream can tell you. Nervous and anxious are the two most common feelings I get, I over think the situation and feel like I'd just come off as creepy! So if you are reading this and have any pointers to becoming more comfortable in clicking photos of females for the project feel free to comment or PM me! All chatter aside, I do recommend checking out the 100 strangers group! It's full of truly amazing people, with just as equal if not greater skill at taking excellent portraits of strangers too!

At the Station Gym again.
Bit more painting on the tower. This time the panels on the front. That's me up on the front of the tower. (Right side picture) I used some cunning ropework to keep us safe!
Then I lowered Tom off the back of the tower (left pic) so he could touch up some missing bits.
Good fun and completely safe! 😁

Through the falling snow and city traffic, a police van moves steadily on patrol. Just another day on the job, ensuring the streets remain safe for everyone.

How the things are... The artwork here presented is part of a research idealized in 2017 and which its materialization started last year. At the time, I was trying to address, in a fictional way, the possible pathological crossings that diagnose a country with no longer breath, voice and speech. ⠀

In these turbulent times, put the mask on yourself first. Oxygenate yourself. Physically and metaphorically so you don't lose your consciousness. Only then will you be able to help others as yourself. ⠀

More than enough life jackets on board the Steamboat Natchez (the USCG reduced their capacity at one point, but they still carry enough for the old capacity...learned that on the private tour).

Lisa and I made a trip to the Orange Empire Railway Museum again on 2/6/13. I spotted these rustic but colorful blue "Safety First" signs near a red Santa Fe car just waiting to be photographed.
This badge dating to c1915 is a wonderful piece of early railroad memorabilia as it clearly signposts a campaign by the Chicago & North Western Line to promote 'Health & Safety' to its railroad employees. In 1910, the C&NWL formed the Railroad Safety & Accident Prevention Department and from this evolved the 'Safety First' movement.
The catalyst behind this campaign was Ralph Richards who catalogued data relating to railroad employee accidents and concluded that the majority of injuries were due to carelessness and not faulty equipment or derailments. His 'Safety First' campaign helped focus railroad workers on accident avoidance by highlighting daily hazards in order to reduce personal injuries. The unions supported this pioneering movement while the railroads initially showed some reluctance to fully embrace the spirit of the movement...... however, common sense prevailed.
The above railroad badge in itself is quite unique but its collectibility is enhanced with the original backing card that shows the renowned badge maker.....Greenduck Metal Stamping Company, Chicago. The company specialised in metal and produced a wide range of products such as: Advertising Novelties | Enamel, Metal and Ribbon Badges | Gold and Enamelled Buttons and Emblems | Lithographed Metal & Celluloid Buttons.
Established in 1906, the Company also operated under its other name The Greenduck Company Mastercrafters in Metal, Chicago.

Oxford Bus Museum & Morris Motors Museum
The museum tells the story of bus and coach travel around Oxfordshire over the last 130 years. The exhibits include a historic preserved horse-drawn tram, motor buses, coaches and a wide selection of artefacts including bus stops, ticket machines, timetables, posters and staff uniforms.
Since 2004 the museum has also been home to the Morris Motors Museum, which charts the story of how these classic British cars and commercial vehicles were produced at Cowley in Oxford.
The link between William Morris founder of Morris Motors (who later became Lord Nuffield) and buses in Oxford, can be traced to 1913 when he and a partner started the first motorbus service in the city.

Direction Sign
The AA erected more than 30,000 of these village signs between 1906 and 1939. After 1939 it became the responsibility of local authorities to erect directional signs.
They are a rare sight these days but a few still do exist in their original locations.
The vast majority of the signs that remain are now in private collections or museums.
