One can still find beauty even after death! Friday morning's hard freeze killed all my flowers. I will be taking them up today.

Seljalandsfoss is an impressive waterfall in the south of Iceland. The waterfall drops 60 m, and is part of the Seljalands River that originates in the volcano glacier Eyjafjallajökull. You can walk walk behind the falls into a small cave.

We recently have extended rain, and we need it. I drove from the Silicon Valley to La Honda and Loma Mar, small villages located on the peninsula of the San Francisco Bay Area. The hilly area is full of redwoods. I drove along a windy road among redwoods, parked on the side, set up the camera and tripod inside the car because it was raining, and took this shot through of the open window.

During the pandemic we drove South along the California coast on the iconic Highway 1. It's a gorgeous drive, with ever changing scenery. I love the rugged nature. We approached a tunnel shortly after passing Lucia, which is part of Big Sur.

Last month we went to see the Hoover Dam near Las Vegas, Nevada. We first walked on the bypass bridge, which is also an impressive structure. This is the view downstream from the center of the dam.

On Saturday I went to the city of San Francisco, California. After a tech meetup I decided to cross the Bay Bridge for a photo shoot on Treasure Island. This is the view from the Yerba Buena Island dead center over the Bay Bridge, facing downtown San Francisco.

I processed a balanced HDR photo from a 13 sec RAW exposure. The cityscape is not totally sharp, I might try this shot again another time. I applied the rule of thirds to the book on this shot.

When I arrived at Zurich airport a few days ago we had to take a tunnel train from the terminal to immigration. It is an automated vehicle without driver. I sat in the front and took this 0.6 sec exposure.

My son's latest interest: LED flashlights. He converted an off the shelf flashlight into one with a stronger LED and driver. Here he is testing it out at the Black Rock Desert in Nevada at night. It was cloudy, and the moon just came up. He could shine at a trailer that is over 500 meters away. He still wants to go farther using an aspheric lens etc.

Three weeks ago we played tourists and went to see Alcatraz, the famous federal prison in the San Francisco Bay. The island has a layered legacy as a 19th-century military fortress, a notorious [[bit.ly/1EEaxG8][federal penitentiary]], a site of Native American heritage and protest, and now one of America’s most visited national parks.

Corridors of the prison were named after major American streets. This one is Broadway Street. I had to wait for a while to catch a somewhat empty street.

A week ago we went to Zion National Park in Utah. It is a relatively narrow canyon, enclosed by nice red mountains. We spent some time in the water. My daughter had some fun doing gymnastics.

I went for a day trip to the Yosemite National Park. I stayed longer to see the moonrise. It was a gorgeous spectacle. This mountain was illuminated by the moon, cars passing by illuminated the trees.

Last summer we had a rainy sunset in my hometown Schuders, located in the Swiss Alps near the Austrian border. Parts of the mountains were illuminated by the sun, parts in the shade of clouds. Neighbors approached our home, we invited them for dinner.

This coming Saturday we will go again to launch rockets at the Snow Ranch in the California Central Valley. The ranch is huge with 3000 acres / 1200 hectares. At our last visit in the beginning of January I took this photo of a lonely black oak tree. Anybody interested in joining us on Saturday?
