Today we stopped at Donner Lake on the way to Lake Tahoe. There were three big storms that brought tons of fresh powder to the mountains. I am looking forward to backcountry skiing in the Mt. Rose area.

We are on the way to the Black Rock Desert in Nevada to attend Balls 24, a crazy rocket launch event with huge rockets. Some people call this event the Super Bowl of rocketry. Many rockets are built in the garage from scratch, including the solid propellant for the motors. First time for us, we are looking forward hearing the roars and sonic booms, and seeing the spectacle. Some rockets are going to explode, the probability is not too small.
You can drive on the playa (dry lake bed) at high speed. It is quite safe, there is no police around, and you can see other moving vehicles by the huge dust cloud they cause. The playa is gypsum, a compressible and very fine-grained material.
See you next week - we will be offline for the next 3 days.

A week earlier when I first discovered this old railroad line, it was overgrown with taller grass and dead thistle. In the meantime, the property owner had done some cleaning up and the lines of the tracks were standing out nicely in the evening light.

In October 2019 we stayed for a few days at the Harbour Grand Kowloon in Hong Kong. From the rooftop swimming pool you can see the conic skyline of the Hong Kong island. The round rooftop building in the middle is the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre.

We drove to the Hope Valley in California to see the fall colors in the Sierra Nevada mountains. On the way we passed by a walnut tree farm near Lockeford, where we noticed a lot of dust in the trees. We stopped, it was a good photo opportunity! It turned out that the walnuts just were getting harvested. One machine drove along the nicely arranged trees to shake them one by one to make the nuts fall to the ground, another machine arranged the fallen nuts and debris in the middle between tree rows, and a third machine scooped it up. All that created a lot of dust, to the delight of us three photographers.

A look back over the treed plains from along US 287 in Lafayette, CO toward Green Mountain and the line of foothills that form the western edge of the Boulder Valley. This image seemed the perfect candidate for vintage processing--reminding me of the quieter times portrayed in many a picture of the Boulder Valley from archival records. Ironically, a sprawling Walmart Superstore is just out of sight to the left of where this picture was taken.
Check out this nicely done drone video portrait, called Above Boulder, by Kjell Redal, for a look at life in modern day Boulder Valley. Just came across it this morning:
Even though I'm not "caught up" here on Flickr, due to extreme busyness leading up to being out of town till the beginning of October, I thought I'd post this picture from a recent bike ride before my departure. I will be offline with Flickr for several weeks, beginning this weekend. Enjoy the rest of your summer and happy shooting everyone!

We went to the Death Valley in California with the goal to experience the sailing stones on the Racetrack Playa at new moon. Before dark we scouted interesting stones on the playa and marked their GPS location. Walking back I discovered this phenomenon on the playa. Wind ripped out tiles of dried playa. Interestingly, it was just at this one place, with tiles ripped out in an elliptic line.

A lot of traffic passes on the new bay bridge opened in September 2013, while the old iron bridge is slowly getting dismantled. The Oakland side of the bay bridge is all new, while the San Francisco side of the bridge is illuminated by beautiful LED lights since March 2013.
The 10 sec exposure makes the night sky visible, and the HDR processing enhances the micro-contrast on the bridge.

The Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health in Las Vegas, Nevada, has a very unique architecture. This side of the main hall has smallish windows. I took this photo shortly before sunset - another building is reflected in golden colors.
The building was designed by world-renowned architect Frank Gehry, who among others designed the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain, and the Walt Disney Concert Hall in downtown Los Angeles.

After going to an event in San Francisco I went to the Sutro Heights Park near the Cliff House. This is the view to the south with the brightly lit Great Highway. I like the contrast of the golden tones and the dark blues.
I processed a paintery and a balanced HDR photo from a long exposure RAW image, and blended them to get this balanced look. I am happy with the composition and colors, but not with the unsharpness. I need to get a more sturdy tripod for windy conditions.

The medieval town Chur is the capital of the Grisons region in the Swiss Alps. The old town has small squares connected by small alleys. This alley is part of the Bärenloch (bear hole).
