Today we went for a Hatsumode event, a Japanese New Year party in Berkeley, California. It was a nice sunny afternoon, so we decided to see the sunset at the nearby Grizzly Peak. Usually there is a nice westward view of the Bay Bridge, with San Francisco behind it. Today it was too foggy though. When we left I noticed this scene to the South. I am glad we came up here.

Today is the first day of fall. Open your eyes, and embrace the little details when strolling in nature.

On Sunday I joined a photowalk at Point Pinole Regional Shoreline park, located north of Berkeley, California. You can walk for miles - it is a big park overlooking the San Pablo Bay, which is part of the San Francisco Bay. This pier is at the very tip of the park, and is illuminated by the settling sun.

I processed a balanced HDR photo from a RAW exposure. I took three bracketed exposures but only used one to get the pronounced blacks.

The Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health in Las Vegas, Nevada, has a very unique architecture. This part of the building is a big hall. The building was designed by world-renowned architect Frank Gehry, who among others designed the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain, and the Walt Disney Concert Hall in downtown Los Angeles.

I went to the Robert C Levy Tunnel (also called Broadway Tunnel) in San Francisco with the intent to do long exposures of cars in the tunnel. Those photos did not turn out that well. Walking back towards the exit I noticed the reflections in the tiled wall. Perfect serendipity!

I really like the way this turned out! I was able to get the sun to align with a crack in the barn as the sun rose. Three exposure HDR processed with Nik HDR Efex Pro 2

I did not know about the little cypress tree garden at Langdon Ct in the Presidio, that overlooks the Golden Gate Bridge. I was walking around at night and stumbled upon it. Sometimes you get positive surprises. It was a cloudy night - the bright golden gate bridge lightens the clouds.

I took three bracketed long exposure with an ND filter, then processed a balanced HDR photo from them. The beautiful red tint comes from the cheap ND8 filter.

Earlier this year we went hiking along the coast of Santa Cruz, California. I captured this scene shortly after sunset.

Una de las calles del casco viejo de Vitoria, al caer la tarde, la luz iba entrando poco a poco por las calles, dando como resultado esta imagen. Intentando, que tanto los edificios del primer termino, como los del fondo quedaran, lo mas compensados posible.

One of the streets of the old town of Vitoria, at the fall of the afternoon, the light was gradually entering the streets, resulting in this image. Trying, that both the buildings of the first term, and those in the background, would be as compensated as possible.

Did you know that San Francisco has houseboats? After going to an entrepreneurship event in San Francisco I went to nearby Mission Creek. There are houseboats since the sixties. In the last few years they got surrounded by high-rises. A local news article has some background on the houseboats.

This shot cost me $68. When I went back to the car I had a parking ticket on the windshield. No parking on that street from 12:01am to 02:00am on Mon, Wed, Fri. I got the ticket at 12:16am. My bad, mentally I was still on Tuesday. But do you really think they clean the roads three times a week? Exactly after midnight? Seems like SF takes measures to cunningly filling their coffers.

I processed a balanced HDR photo from a long exposure RAW image, pulled the curves for mid tones, and selectively reduced the color saturation in the sky to make the scene pop.

In June we went to see the Hoover Dam near Las Vegas, Nevada. We first walked on the bypass bridge, which is also an impressive structure. This is the view from the Arizona side of the dam upstream. The water level of Lake Maed is extremely low, caused by the extended drought.

A very tiny flower measuring about 1cm across, growing from a concrete crack.

Made from 12 photos and stacked in Helicon Focus.

Taken with a 16mm macro extension tube from Meike.

Since the a6000 doesn't have a free built-in focus bracketing feature, I used an experimental app made available by our friends here:

sony-pmca.appspot.com/apps

The app can be installed in the camera and it works well.

We sometimes go hiking at nearby Rancho San Antonio in Cupertino, California. On the way there is a farm called Deer Hollow Farm. I spotted these cattle/pig stairs, used to load the animals onto wagons/trucks in the old days. Nature is slowly reclaiming the contraption.

The Zion National Park in Utah is an amazing place. Turn around a corner, yet another breathtaking view of the red rocks. I held the camera low on this footpath. It just started to sprinkle a bit.

Today we had some rain in the Silicon Valley. The rain stopped before sunset so in anticipation of a potential nice sunset I headed up on Mt. Hamilton. It was too cloudy for a sunset photo. On the way back I stopped on my favorite turn on Mt. Hamilton Road.

I tried this light painting. I put my camera on self timer with 30 sec exposure, and walked in the middle of the road while circling the LED light panel facing forward. The camera registered just the vent holes of the light panel.

I processed a balanced HDR photo and a paintery HDR photo from a RAW long exposure, and played with the color balance to give the scene a mysterious feel.
