Steamrail’s S313, T364 & S301 are seen approaching Goornong with the “Australia Day Diesels” tour from Rochester

The S-Class is Mercedes-Benz top class car series which exists still today. After three predecessor model series until today seven generations were made.

The W126 series was launched in September 1979 and was designed by Bruno Sacco (It, 1933) and Werner Breitschwerdt.

The W126 was face-lifted for model year 1986.

 

This 1985 W126 model is from the second generation. It was bought by the office of the Norwegian Prime Minister in 1985 and was in use during state visits and for transportation of winners of the Nobel Peace Prize around 1990.

The car has bullet proof windows and body.

2415 kg.

Production M-B S-Class series: 1972-present.

Production M-B W126 2nd gen.: Dec. 1979-April 1992.

Original old Norwegian reg. number: Nov. 18, 1985 (invalid

and deregistered since Dec. 16, 2009).

Engine: 2496 cc inline six cylinder, 150 hp @ 5,500 rpm

 

The 1961-1971 Paul Bracq-designed W111 was based on the 'fintall' W110 saloon and cost the equivalent of £170,000 (2014). The deisgn was more restrained and squared-off than the fintall saloon models. There was no direct replacement for this model until the C126 coupe of 1981.

 

This car was originally sold in Germany and then exported to the USA, where upon US-spec lights were fitted and remain on the car. The rare 4-speed manual tranmission is fitted to this car.

A bit like my Camry, it would appear this has been off the road for a while (2014 in this case) and someone is now attempting to resurrect it. The MoT check site says it was put in for test at the end of last year and failed on what will hopefully be some relatively minor items:

 

Fuel pipe leaking (7.2.3)

rear brake binding both rear brakes (3.7.B.1)

Windscreen wiper does not clear the windscreen effectively (8.2.2)

Parking brake: efficiency below requirements (3.7.B.7)

S313 and S303 stand alongside platform 3A, Southern Cross. The two locomotives are waiting for the V/Line pilot locomotive (Y129) to drag the carriages out of the way to permit the two S Class locomotives to run around their train, prior to departing with their Steamrail Victoria special to Tocumwal.

 

S313 is owned and operated by Steamrail Victoria, Newport (and also leased to Qube Victoria when required), whilst S303 is in the custody of Seymour Rail Heritage Centre, Seymour (and also leased to El Zorro when required). In the spirit of co-operation between Victorian heritage groups, they often share locomotives to undertake special tours. Both S313 and S303 would also operate a SRHC heritage train the following weekend.

Arguably AMG’s most iconic vehicle, the Mercedes-Benz 300 SEL ‘Red Pig’ jump-started the small company’s rise to fame, leading to Mercedes-Benz’s eventual takeover of the tuning house roughly twenty years ago.

 

Modified at a customer’s request, AMG started with a damaged 300 SEL and turned it into an all-out racing machine. Boring the engine out to 6.8 litres, which produced 420 bhp, AMG fitted aluminium doors, widened the track, fitted larger tyres, and flared the wheel arches. Due to its ungainly proportions and red paintwork, the car was quickly nicknamed the ‘Red Pig’, but soon enough the car proved itself in the crucible of motorsport. At the 1971 24 Hours of Spa, the car won its class and finished 2nd overall, having started 5th on the grid.

 

While the original ‘Red Pig’ was eventually used in aircraft testing leading to its destruction, a handful of faithful replicas have been built, including one by Mercedes-Benz. This example started as an accident-free, 1969 model year 300 SEL 6.3 and was restored to a ‘Red Pig’ replica by the Mercedes-Benz specialists at Arthur Bechtel Classic Motors in Böblingen, Germany. Purchased by James Goo Kim, CEO of D.Parts of South Korea, directly from Arthur Bechtel, it has travelled less than 800 km since its conversion.

S302, T386 and C501 combine to lift 7769 loaded El Zorro/Iluka Resources mineral sands train out of Murtoa. S302 and T386 had brought the loaded train in earlier and paused to attach C501 (which is too heavy for the branch). The C is needed to tackle some of the steeper grades to the east.
