A look back at some of the vehicles that attended the excellent Thames Valley & Great Western Omnibus Trust's Thames Valley and Reading Vintage Bus Running Day, held in Reading in June 2018 to commemorate 50 years since the last Reading trolleybus departed.

Entry #SD14 was preserved Alder Valley Leyland National 218 KPA369P. This bus is owned by Adrian Morton of Mortons Travel.

The 9th Alton Classic Bus & Country Pub Running Day took place in and around Alton in Hampshire on Saturday 14th July 2018. The annual event is organised by the Hants & Surrey 'Bristol RE' Group who run 4 different routes serving 20 local pubs.

My shots this year were taken in Alton, Chawton, East Worldham, Hawkley, Holybourne, Selbourne and Upper & Lower Farringdon.

The Winchester Bus Running Day, organised by the Friends of King Alfred Buses (FOKAB) took place on Bank Holiday Monday May 1st 2017.

Seen here at the St Catherines Park & Ride site are three members of the Hampshire Bus Preservation fleet. All are Bristol / ECW buses with VMO234H being a former Alder Valley LH, HDL25E a former Southern Vectis RESL6G, and PPM210G a former Southdown RESL6G.

The coaches of Yelloway Motor Services of Rochdale would have been a familiar sight in the Torbay area on their large network of Holiday Express routes from the Lancashire Mill Towns.

To commemorate 100 years since the founding of the Devon General Omnibus & Touring Company in 1919, a bus rally and running day was held at Newton Abbot Racecourse on Sunday 4th August 2019. The event was well-attended by enthusiasts and the general public, and numerous vehicles were on display, mainly former Devon General buses but also featuring vehicles from other fleets in the South West and further afield. The event was well supported by local enthusiast groups and by Stagecoach South West, the successors to Devon General, who had a number of their own vehicles and staff in attendance.

A unique vehicle - DR679 (NTT 679) is an AEC Regent III that was given a prototype all-metal "Aurora" bodywork and exhibited at the 1952 Commercial Motor Show in London. The Aurora never went into production as it was superseded by the "Orion". DR679 was used by Devon General, mostly on Torquay local routes, from 1953 until 1965. It was used as part of the Running Day and is seen here loading up for a trip to Chudleigh and back.

Bournemouth Corporation 159 (8159 EL) was one of 20 Weymann-bodied Leyland Titan PD3s acquired in 1960 for trolleybus replacement, and which were built the the Corporation's same unique twin-staircase specification with an open rear platform for boarding and a front doorway for alighting. By 1976 it had been acquired by the Bournemouth Museum Department and is now in private ownership.

VDV 817 (DR817) is one of a number of Weymann-bodied AEC Regent V that entered service with Devon General between 1955 and 1957. It was one of 23 that were built with open rear platforms for use on Exeter City services that were jointly operated with Exeter City Transport - the City Council at that time did not allow doored vehicles to be operated on these services. It was acquired for preservation immediately upon withdrawal in 1971 and is in the care of the Devon General Omnibus Trust.

DR817 is seen at the bus terminus at Budliegh Salterton, having operated a route 10 journey from Exmouth during the Running Day. It was duplicated on this journey by the Albion Nimbus SR839.

DR661 is a Weymann-bodied AEC Regent III, a typical example of the large number of such vehicles that entered service with Devon General in the earlier part of the 1950s - DR661 was new in 1952 and withdrawn in 1965. It is now owned by the Devon General Omnibus Trust and carries period adverts that would have been applied to buses allocated to Torquay depot.

A last look at DR661, once more loading up in Imperial Road, Exmouth during the Running Day on Sunday 4th September 2022. This is its third trip of the day, this time a run out to Budleigh Salterton and back.

The immediate postwar Eastern Coachworks lowbridge bodywork on Bristol K-type chassis rivals the immortal London Transport RT family for simple, timeless elegance. Here we see Peter Brown in charge of Ensignbus's immaculate ex-Hants & Dorset Bristol K6A (HLJ44) of 1949, on the X81 running day in December 2011. As handsome as an RT maybe, but certainly not as driver-friendly in the gear-changing department, as Peter would not doubt vouch.

The 36th King Alfred Running Day took place on May Day bank holiday 2019. The event is based in Winchester and attracts around 40 buses and coaches operating a large number of routes throughout the day.

Seen taking part in the 2019 King Alfred Running Day in WInchester is a green and cream bus of a slightly different provenance to the other vehicles in service. 136NOU (3267) is a Renault TN4F which formerly ran for RATP in Paris and is referred to by its owners simply as 'the Paris Bus'. It is seen here leaving The Broadway in Winchester city centre passing the statue of King Alfred the Great.
