Leicester Heritage Bus Running Day 2013

Now, what would Flickrer Gardner8LXB be pointing out to the owner of ERF 310PJH, preserved in Hayes of Walsall livery, that is now a short-term Aldridge resident? Why - no Gardner badge, of course!

Body by Metro Cammell Weymann.

DR817 (VDV 817) is one of 23 AEC Regent V with 56-seater open platform rear entrance Weymann-bodied buses that were purchased between 1955 and 1957 for the Exeter City services operated jointly with the municipal City of Exeter Transport Undertaking. For many years the City Council and local Police would not allow doored buses to operate on Exeter City services, which put the municipal undertaking at a financial disadvantage in the 1960s and led to its sale to Devon General, by that time part of the National Bus Company, in April 1970. DR817 is seen at Newton Abbot Railway Station on the shuttle service to and from the Rally Site at the Racecourse.

To commemorate 100 years since the founding of the Devon General Omnibus & Touring Company in 1919, a bus rally and running day was held at Newton Abbot Racecourse on Sunday 4th August 2019. The event was well-attended by enthusiasts and the general public, and numerous vehicles were on display, mainly former Devon General buses but also featuring vehicles from other fleets in the South West and further afield. The event was well supported by local enthusiast groups and by Stagecoach South West, the successors to Devon General, who had a number of their own vehicles and staff in attendance.

Any regular Royal Blue passengers who found themselves consigned to this bus seated, underpowered monstrosity would probably think twice about travelling Royal Blue again - the difference in ride between this and a Beadle or Duple coach bodied 6 cylinder Bristol L or LL was akin to the difference between 3rd and 1st class travel on the railways - if my memories serve me correctly having travelled many times between home in Taunton and Southampton durting the 1950s when "loaned" to a childless aunt during the school holidays,

DR661 is a Weymann-bodied AEC Regent III, a typical example of the large number of such vehicles that entered service with Devon General in the earlier part of the 1950s - DR661 was new in 1952 and withdrawn in 1965. It is now owned by the Devon General Omnibus Trust and carries period adverts that would have been applied to buses allocated to Torquay depot.

It is seen here in Imperial Road, Exmouth, during the Running Day on Sunday 4th September 2022. Despite the large crowd boarding I was still able to bag one of the last seats for this run out to Littleham Village.

She had been sold to Scotland in 1986 and came back from Scotland 23 years ago after only 4 years in service... in Routemaster things you need to get used to counting in decades rather than years as for most other buses... She's now preserved with the Clydemaster Preservation Group in Brentwood.

Definitely a much better interior to those of modern day plastic vehicles.

VDV 817 (DR817) is one of a number of Weymann-bodied AEC Regent V that entered service with Devon General between 1955 and 1957. It was one of 23 that were built with open rear platforms for use on Exeter City services that were jointly operated with Exeter City Transport - the City Council at that time did not allow doored vehicles to be operated on these services. It was acquired for preservation immediately upon withdrawal in 1971 and is in the care of the Devon General Omnibus Trust.

DR817 is seen departing Imperial Road, Exmouth, with a route 5 run to Woodbury during the Exmouth Running Day - these journeys continued to Clyst St George and returned to Exmouth as route 85.

A little glimpse of today's gathering as we headed over to the station. The usual crowd, and as per usual superbly organised with a selection of lovely country area routes.
