Seen laying over at Ley Hill is our trusty steed, AEC Swift/Merlin, MB 90, SMM 90F, dating from 1968. very nice, and quite powerful, quite handy around all those big hills in the area. Didn't appear to struggle at all up the hills.

Here, it is seen about to make the return journey back to Chesham Broadway, from which it would then to go up Berkhamstead Station.

Leicester Heritage Bus Running Day 2013

A collection of shots from the Friends of King Alfred Buses (FOKAB) running day held on New Year's Day in Winchester in January 1999.

Present that day was preserved King Alfred Leyland PD2 / East Lancs POU494.

DR661 is a Weymann-bodied AEC Regent III, a typical example of the large number of such vehicles that entered service with Devon General in the earlier part of the 1950s - DR661 was new in 1952 and withdrawn in 1965. It is now owned by the Devon General Omnibus Trust and carries period adverts that would have been applied to buses allocated to Torquay depot - Rockheys was a notable Torquay Department Store that, although taken over by DH Evans in 1948, continued to trade under the Rockheys name until 1971.

Having recently arrived back from Littleham Village during the Running Day on Sunday 4th September 2022, the crew has a brief chat before heading for the stand to await their next duty.

Good to have Paul Emery's Duple 425 E126LAD at the Aldridge Running day today, reinforcing my view of what an inherently good coach they were. Thanks Paul for letting me have a drive, too - just what a coach of that era should be.

A look back at some of the vehicles that attended the excellent Thames Valley & Great Western Omnibus Trust's Thames Valley and Reading Vintage Bus Running Day, held in Reading in June 2018 to commemorate 50 years since the last Reading trolleybus departed.

Entry #SD15 was preserved Alder Valley Leyland National 251 NPJ472R.

A unique vehicle - DR679 (NTT 679) is an AEC Regent III that was given a prototype all-metal "Aurora" bodywork and exhibited at the 1952 Commercial Motor Show in London. The Aurora never went into production as it was superseded by the "Orion". DR679 was used by Devon General, mostly on Torquay local routes, from 1953 until 1965. It was used as part of the Running Day and is seen here loading up for a trip to Chudleigh and back.

To commemorate 100 years since the founding of the Devon General Omnibus & Touring Company in 1919, a bus rally and running day was held at Newton Abbot Racecourse on Sunday 4th August 2019. The event was well-attended by enthusiasts and the general public, and numerous vehicles were on display, mainly former Devon General buses but also featuring vehicles from other fleets in the South West and further afield. The event was well supported by local enthusiast groups and by Stagecoach South West, the successors to Devon General, who had a number of their own vehicles and staff in attendance.

The 36th King Alfred Running Day took place on May Day bank holiday 2019. The event is based in Winchester and attracts around 40 buses and coaches operating a large number of routes throughout the day.

This year I took some photos in Hursley, Otterbourne, Sutton Scotney and Winchester, although I did avoid the extremely busy Broadway terminus.

A collection of unspectacular shots from the Aldershot & District Bus Running Day held in May 2000 and based at Aldershot railway station.

Vehicles seen at the event included preserved East Kent Dennis Falcon / Dennis EFN568, Thames Valley Bristol KSW / ECW 748 JRX823, and East Kent Dennis Lancet / Park Royal CFN121.

A look back at some of the vehicles that attended the excellent Thames Valley & Great Western Omnibus Trust's Thames Valley and Reading Vintage Bus Running Day, held in Reading in June 2018 to commemorate 50 years since the last Reading trolleybus departed.

Visiting the event was preserved Badgerline Leyland Leopard / Plaxton Paramount C49F PWS492S. This coach was new to Bristol with a Plaxton Supreme body in 1977 but caught fire in 1983. Plaxton rebodied the coach with then new Paramount body.

32 seats doesn't seem many in a 30ft long bus. It was shown displaying "on hire to Royal Blue" boards. If it was purchased specifically for this duty in addition to routine bus work additional leg room may have been provided especially as Royal Blue passengers would have had more luggage than short distance passengers and the bus did seem to have more than a rudimentary boot. In fact it is odd that it had a rear entrance as that would have necessitated a conductor who would have been superfluous other than to guard the door as all ticket sales on Royal Blue services were done in offices or agencies and ticket checking was a driver responsibility, if my memory serves me correctly.

Bristol Harbourside Rally & Running Day

The 2015 Alton Classic Bus & Country Pub Running Day took place on Saturday 18th July 2015.

Here, preserved Southern Vectis Bristol RELL / ECW B53F 863 TDL563K is seen stopped outside the Rose & Crown pub in Upper Farringdon.

On part route 16 as additional vehicle to replace unavailable vehicles. This bus has recently returned to service following a major refurbishment following a rear end fire several years ago.

Devon General was an enthusiastic AEC operator and Leylands were unusual in the fleet. However in 1951 Devon General purchased six Leyland PS2/1 with low-height bodywork for the Exeter-Tiverton route which passed under a low railway bridge. The road height under the bridge was increased before the buses were delivered, so they were used on other routes in the Exeter and Tiverton areas. DL640 (HTT 640), seen here participating in the Running Day with a trip to Ipplepen and back, was withdrawn in 1964.
