The Lidl Run Kildare Events 2013 were held at the Curragh Racecourse, Newbridge, Co. Kildare, Ireland on Sunday 12th May 2013. There were three events: a 10KM, a half marathon, and a full marathon. This is a selection of photographs which includes all events. The photographs are taken from the start and finish of the marathon, the finish of the 10KM, and the finish of the half marathon. Due to the large numbers participating we did not manage to photograph everyone - which was not helped by the weather. Congratulations to Jo Cawley and her RunKildare crew for another great event. The weather didn't dampen the spirits of the many happy participants.

Overall Race Summary
Participants: There were approximately 3,000 participants over the 3 race events - there were runners, joggers, and walkers participating.
Weather: A cold breezy morning with heavy rain at the start. The weather dried up for the 10KM and the Half Marathon races
Course: This is an undulating course with some good flat stretches on the Curragh.

As mentioned above we take these photographs as a hobby and as a voluntary contribution to the running community in Ireland. Very often we have actually ran in the same race and then switched to photographer mode after we finished the race. Consequently, we feel that we have no obligations to capture a photograph of every participant in the race. However, we do try our very best to capture as many participants as possible. But this is sometimes not possible for a variety of reasons:
►You were hidden behind another participant as you passed our camera
►Weather or lighting conditions meant that we had some photographs with blurry content which we did not upload to our Flickr set
►There were too many people - some races attract thousands of participants and as amateur photographs we cannot hope to capture photographs of everyone
►We simply missed you - sorry about that - we did our best!

But we cannot promise that there will be photograph there. I can't deny there's something beautiful about the Pennsylvania Wilds, at least when you're not worried about the time clock. I sort of despise work sending me to Cameron County, mostly because it's so very, very, VERY far out of my way most days that the only time it makes sense to go to Emporium is when I have to be in Saint Mary's, Ridgway, or Johnsonburg anyways.
Rather than stress about keeping my day moving or getting started on time (after a 2 hour drive from home), I decided to end my day at Emporium and meander my way home. After stopping at Driftwood to bemoan the loss of the PRR position light signals that NS had retired at 0700 that morning (having never caught a train under them), I rambled down the Buffalo Line to Sinnemahoning, where the 'short way' home is to hang a right on to Wykoff Run Road and head towards Karthaus. In no hurry (for once), I pulled over near this diminutive waterfall and snapped a rare (for me, anyways) landscape photo that has nothing to do with railroads.

I ran in the race - but my photograph doesn't appear here in your Flickr set! What gives?
As mentioned above we take these photographs as a hobby and as a voluntary contribution to the running community in Ireland. Very often we have actually ran in the same race and then switched to photographer mode after we finished the race. Consequently, we feel that we have no obligations to capture a photograph of every participant in the race. However, we do try our very best to capture as many participants as possible. But this is sometimes not possible for a variety of reasons:
►You were hidden behind another participant as you passed our camera
►Weather or lighting conditions meant that we had some photographs with blurry content which we did not upload to our Flickr set
►There were too many people - some races attract thousands of participants and as amateur photographs we cannot hope to capture photographs of everyone
►We simply missed you - sorry about that - we did our best!
You can email us petermooney78 AT gmail DOT com to enquire if we have a photograph of you which didn't make the final Flickr selection for the race. But we cannot promise that there will be photograph there. As alternatives we advise you to contact the race organisers to enquire if there were (1) other photographs taking photographs at the race event or if (2) there were professional commercial sports photographers taking photographs which might have some photographs of you available for purchase. This is not a gloat
This post might not impress everybody so I'm calling this an interesting find instead of a gloat.
I've always been fond of the smaller tool makers. So when I spotted an Aussie hand plane on a "Online auction site near you™, I had to make a run for it.
After a btalle with another curious yet uncertain buyer, I won the auction and a few days later arrived a Turner no 4 smoothing plane.
I won't show you any pictures before you have read far enough, as some of you might turn your eyes away in disgust. But I can assure you, there's no need for parental guiding the woodworking style.
Yes, it has plastic handles. Yes, it has a frog made of aluminum.
While you let tho sink in I will tell you the plane also has a very solid and well made body, the handles are translucent (á la MF permaloid) and that the plane is fitted with a Erik Anton Berg cutter made specifically for the Turner tool company.
I will not try to steal the show as all I know about this company is borrowed from the Village Woodworker down under:

What I can add is that I agree with his review. This is a very well made hand plane. The celluloid acetate handles feels good in my hands and bring a light smile to my face, much needed in the dark era of Finnish autumn awaiting the even worse. The aluminum frog is of course a slight concern. Will it hold up against had use? But as long as remember not to tighten either the lever cap or the frog screws too much I ought to be OK. And I just love having a Berg cutter made specifically for metal hand planes which can be used not in only in this plane but also my MF no 9.
This plane was purchased from an Englishman who says his father worked in Australia for a few years and who thinks his dad must have bought the plane during his stay. From what I know it hasn't been used for a long time. It's not unused but the scar tissue on the surface has more to do with being stored away improperly than from hard use. The plane has some shallow pitting on both sole and cheeks and I discovered rust on the handle bolts as well as the bolt housing. By the look of the bleached and very tatty box and the mildew stench coming from it, I would guess the plane has been stored in a outside shed but succumbed to sunshine and varying temperatures, which would very well explain why the plane has been corroded.
The handles are intact and I hope that adding some wax might help them to stay sound. Luckily the handles have not been subjected to direct sunlight.
There's a very nice addition t the fastening of the front knob. The raised housing on the body has a recess cut into it at the front side. The knob has a mating little toe which fits into the recess. This feature will keep the front knob from rotating and prevent the user from over tightening the knob. An ingenious invention which would be welcomed on other planes as well.
The plane has only been taken for a short spin on some ash, but it does feel promising. The cutter had been resharpened but not across its full edge so it needs a proper resharpening before I can provide a verdict.
What I can say is that I have compared the weight of this plane with a MF no 9 (Type 2) and a Stanley low knob no 4.
The Turner is the decidedly heaviest of them all, even considering this plane has plastic handles and a frog made of aluminum. It weighs in at 1750 grams.
The MF no 9 weighs 1680 grams and the Stanley no 4 a mer 1610 grams.
The difference are not mind blowing and might be moot for most users, but it does say something about the solidity of this plane.

Stewart Run is a lovely little stream that flows through the Theodore A. Parker Natural Area in southern Lancaster County. Although we enjoyed our hike on a recent chilly Saturday, we agreed that it will be even more beautiful in the spring!
The Lidl Run Kildare Events 2013 were held at the Curragh Racecourse, Newbridge, Co. Kildare, Ireland on Sunday 12th May 2013. There were three events: a 10KM, a half marathon, and a full marathon. This is a selection of photographs which includes all events. The photographs are taken from the start and finish of the marathon, the finish of the 10KM, and the finish of the half marathon. Due to the large numbers participating we did not manage to photograph everyone - which was not helped by the weather. Congratulations to Jo Cawley and her RunKildare crew for another great event. The weather didn't dampen the spirits of the many happy participants.

Participants: There were approximately 3,000 participants over the 3 race events - there were runners, joggers, and walkers participating.
Weather: A cold breezy morning with heavy rain at the start. The weather dried up for the 10KM and the Half Marathon races
Course: This is an undulating course with some good flat stretches on the Curragh.

DFMWR hosted the third annual Freedom Run at the Clay Kaserne Fitness Center April 12. Almost 400 people showed up to run or walk. The Freedom Run is the sister race to Washington, D.C.'s Cherry Blossom Race.

The Run With The Tide event incorporated a 3K, 10K and Half-Marathon run around the city of Sunderland. The 'Run With The Tide' theme reflecting that this year will see the arrival in the city of the Tall Ships event.

The Color Run is a fun run where participants run a 5k course while getting covered in differed colored powder. Thousands of runners ran in the Seattle event with a portion of registration going towards the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Western Washington & Alaska. May 12th 2013. Fork Run in the Allegheny National Forest in Forest County PA. Taken while hiking upstream and checking hemlock trees for hemlock woolly adelgid, an insect that has killed much of the hemlock population in the Appalachian Region. It has been confirmed in the ANF and Allegany State Park in New York.
The S.S. Speke was a three masted steel barque of 2,876 tons and 93 metres, which was built in Wales in 1891. The Speke drifted broadside on to a reef to the east of Kitty Miller Bay on 22 February 1906 while en route from Peru via Sydney to Geelong to pick up wheat. The accident was attributed to faulty navigation by the captain who had confused a bushfire for a navigation light.
A lifeboat was quickly launched after striking the reef, but it capsized and one of the four occupants drowned. Those remaining finally reached the beach exhausted.
Both cargo and much of the Speke were salvaged although heavy seas battered the wreck for several days until it broke in two and rapidly disintegrated.
Wreckage from the Speke, including part of the bow, still lies high on the rocks, and more debris lies scattered along the edge of the reef in shallow water.
