One of the oldest and still functioning observatories in Europe, the round tower is also a sight worth seeing for its shape and architecture. It is unique in its smooth stepless ramp leading up to the summit and offers beautiful views all across Copenhagen.

Giant Mountain Wilderness, Adirondacks, NY

Although it was a pretty cold start at Roaring Brook Falls, the day held promise. After some stops along the trail, I finally broke out of the the forest at the end of a particularly steep section to the mostly snow free bedrock on Giant's Nubble. Between the exertion, the open rock, and the warming day, it was pretty toasty up here, and I was soon stripping off extra winter encumbrances. Across the valley was this view of Round Mountain and the Dix Range. In March, winter was a long way from over up here.

It's not circular, but you can go all the way round!

The Round House, a 15th century half-timbered merchant's house, Market Place, Evesham, Worcestershire

Evesham stands on a tight loop in the river Avon which flows through the Vale of Evesham in southern Worcestershire. It's sheltered position with the cotswold hills to the south, and warm air channelled up the Severn valley meant that it has always been an important area for market gardening.

To the north, Greenhill, the only side of the town not protected by the Avon, was the site for the important Battle of Evesham on August 4, 1265. It was the decisive battle in the Second Barons' War, in which Simon de Montfort, who was ultimately slain, led a number of rebellious barons against the Royalist forces led by Prince Edward in an attempt to curb monarchy's absolute power. De Montfort was betrayed by the Welsh, who deserted before the battle commenced, leaving him to face a force four times the size of his own. He did however succeed in securing a future for democracy in England.

Round 16 Challenge

C-Dals Aka Sue

"My challenge to you (if you choose to accept it) is a posed portrait of a person with any processing you choose. No candids and no Lego - a real live being ;-)

"

Sue spotted a real weakness in my photo stream. A complete lack of portraits.

This portrait is quite a harsh portrait, no smoothing of skin or reduction in the age. It's been desaturated but still a little of red is left behind.

The Ben My Chree ferry rounds the northernmost point of the Isle of Man during the annual round the island excursion during late June. Strong currents flow around this stretch of coast constantly shifting the steep shingle beach.

As a child I was taught at school that a few centimetres is added to the coastline each year at this point. That was nearly fifty years ago and the Island doesn't seem to have grown much in that time.

Chessboxing, a sport in which chess players, perhaps lacking the skill to become grandmasters, take up beating-the-shit-out-of-eachother in order to reach the pinnacle of their sport (or it may be the other way around). They play a round of chess followed by a round of boxing, and so on, until someone wins. I preferred the chess...

The round robin quilts were on display as part of the Western Branch Exhibition 2008.

This is one of 40 quilts made between 20 quilters from Ireland and 20 from Hungary using Round Robin. Its matching pair is next in this show. The quilters from Ireland are all members of the Irish Patchwork Society

Church of the Holy Sepulchre.

The round part of the church was built in about 1130 by the 'fraternity of the Holy Sepulchre'. They were evidently influenced by the round church in Jerusalem called the Church of the Holy Sepulchre built by the Roman Emperor Constantine in the 4th century. Since they were Normans, recently arrived from France in 1066, they used the Norman or Romanesque style: hence the thick pillars and rounded arches.

Most churches in Western Europe are cross-shaped in their floor plan and in England there are only three other round churches like this one. They were all built following the First Crusade in 1096-99. The round shape is thought to celebrate the resurrection, as Constantine's church in Jerusalem was built on the site of Jesus' tomb and resurrection.

Initially, the church was a wayfarers' chapel serving the main road - just outside. Then it became a normal parish church in the 13th century with a proper chancel and a north aisle.

A heavy gothic tower, built over the round nave in the 15th century, caused a partial collapse in the round ambulatory in 1841. During the extensive Victorian repair and restoration it was replaced by the conical spire you see today. This was a desire to be faithful to the nave's Norman origin. The south aisle and bell tower were also added and the whole east wall rebuilt.

In 1994 the overflowing congregation moved to the much larger St Andrew the Great, opposite Christ's College.

Christian Heritage has taken care of the Round Church since 2001.
