Round Tower (Russian: Круглая башня, Finnish: Pyöreä torni, Swedish: Runda tornet) is a fortification at the market square of Vyborg. It was built in 1547–1550 by the order of Gustav I of Sweden as a part of the medieval town wall. Today it serves as a restaurant and is one of the most popular sights in Vyborg.
Round Tower was originally an arsenal. It was later used as a prison called "The Mutton Prison", a warehouse and since 1861 by the city magistrate. In 1938, as Vyborg was part of Finland, the tower was renovated for restaurant use after the design of architect Uno Ullberg. Tower's diameter is circa 21 meters (69 feet).

I walked up to the second floor to see the restaurant. This was still the time when Russia had very few things in shops and the ruble exchange rate was very low. I went in one of them and it was almost empty. They were selling cabbages from a truck on the market square.
I have not been in Russia since but I know that nowadays shops are selling normally.
So that was a hundred pictures with the X100, to be honest I originally set out to finnish end of year, but somehow I miscalculated :)

I have waited many years to get a decent photo of this dainty little wild orchid also known as the Round-leaved Bog Orchid. I can't tell you how many hundreds of photos I have taken of these beautiful flowers and this is the first shot I have been happy with.

The large wheel in the foreground was driven by the shaft leading out of the round green casing in the background. Inside the casing is the water turbine, turned by the water drawn from the pond above the adjacent dam. A belt would have ridden on the large wheel and turned another wheel on a power shaft (as shown in the previous photo). The smaller wheel in the middle distance was used to power another machine (small pump).
This building dates from 1835 but it is not clear what, if any, of the water-power machinery is from the original plant. The water turbines could have been replaced at some time since the original installation.

Years ago, apparently the engineering school at WVU was experimenting with these cylindrical concrete stones, and my Grandpa got a bunch for either free or cheap... and used them to build all the garden walls. They are very nice and honestly stay right where you put them without mortar for... well.. they've been there 40 years. A few got hit by cars and they just fell over, they didn't break.
You can see them a few other places in town but as far as I know you can't get them anywhere.
They are super-great and I love them.
An Edinburgh railings extravaganza tonight. Went wandering with the Sigma 70-200mm f2.8 set firmly at f2.8 in search of these not very elusive beasts!
Built as landmarks for approaching visitors, they also served as bell towers, storehouses and in times of attack as a refuge.
The famous round rock in Brushy Creek, which marked an attractive low-water crossing on the stagecoach route. The stagecoach stop later grew into the town of Round Rock.
Abernethy Round Tower is one of only two such towers in Scotland. The other one is at Brechin and are are thought to have served as the bell tower for adjacent churches. It doubled up as well as a secure place for members of the community to protect and hide treasured possessions in times of danger. It is not knon how the tower came into being. it is 22m high and about 5m in diameter. and dated from around AD 1100, going by the decoration around the first floor doorway and the belfry windows. A church has been in Abernethy from the 7th century, and soon became the episcopal centre of the Pictish church. During the 12th century this was lost in the ecclesiastical hierarchy to St Andrews. The bell dates from 1782 and the clock from 1868. The tower still functions as the bell tower for the present parish church. Round towers originated in Ireland and around 100 or so may have been built in Ireland from 900AD to 1200. Well over 60 of those towers survive to this day. Only three Irish round towers are known outside of Ireland. Brechin and Abernethy,Scotland, and at Peel on the Isle of Man.
