Due to Covid-19 and social distancing measures in place all church and memorial services are cancelled this year. Instead there has been street solidarity with flags on display. These shots are just from a walk around my block, taken shortly after the 1min silence at 11:30am. I am told there were many on the streets and driveways all across Australia at 6am also for the sunrise remembrance (with many lighting candles).

My First Three Months In Neurosurgery
Aspirations. Goals. Honor. Respect. Some of the characteristics we all wish to inculcate in us in this journey called Life... and the major chunk is determined by our career and our approach towards the same.
In my noble quest towards the same I chose the field of Neurosurgery.
To someone like me... fresh in the department there was a lot to take in starting from the language and my hesitation initially to pronounce (or rather mispronounce) the words, This led me to practice on my own on unsuspecting victims aka patients,, whenever they failed to understand me I would come to the conclusion that I had failed as well -- to get my message across that is! And post trials and tribulations and unfailing help from the wards nurses and interpreters alike I can now muster the courage to approach a patient and not just speak but actually communicate to a certain level.
Neurosurgery fascinates me, somehow as compared to the other surgical branches the degree of uncertainty of the outcome of a particular procedure cannot be predicted to full accuracy, and is furthered by examining the patient when the effect of the anesthesia wears off... and even then the state of the patient may take a sudden turn towards better or for worse and the cause thereof – be unknown – this is what the past 3 months have taught me. Neurosurgery as a branch poses more of a challenge I’m willing to accept -- for Life.
During my first on-call duty I really didn’t know what to expect. Moreover being new to the whole system with unwritten protocols proved to be tougher than I initially fathomed. In spite of being a Neurosurgery resident I cover General Surgery, Plastic Surgery, Vascular Surgery and initially Orthopedics during calls. The fact that there was no post on-call relief did not deter me from evaluating each and every case to the best of my clinical know-how. Over time I have become more adept at dealing with primary care physicians and radiologists as most often we interact with them on a one on one basis. Back home in India we rely heavily on paper work and thorough documentation but the approach is more quick and personalized here – something I’ve learnt to acknowledge and appreciate. The unfaltering dedication of the staff at work round the clock inspires me to give my best during the time spent here. A valuable bit of advice from one of my seniors was to eat when I get a chance to, sleep when I get a chance to and use the washroom when time permitted – and this has held me in good stead.
Over the past couple of weeks I have had everything to gain and nothing to lose – except weight of course and even that’s beneficial... My immediate senior and guide Dr.Farag has convinced me that residents are like air – they are omnipresent – everywhere!
I have learnt that for others to have trust in you, you need to trust yourself and your instincts.
I have learnt that the key to wisdom lies in the details.
I have learnt that the best place for patients to be is not necessarily the hospital, and that social support is the next best healing factor.
I have learnt that the power of will overshadows all medical improbabilities.
I have learnt that watchers can at times alleviate the patient’s anguish rather than prove to be of constructive help.
Having the fire alarm go off in your building of residence needn’t be all that horrifying.
I have come to the conclusion that it is far easier to treat a patient who is not eligible than to transfer him to another hospital, especially on a weekend.
I have learnt that We Are Doctors and we take a break FROM work when we’re off, and NOT come to work everyday!
I have learnt that having your cell phone start ringing whilst you’re presenting an important case isn’t too big a crime.
I have learnt to give due weightage to nurses’ instinct.
I have learnt that a Surgery resident is an ER magnet.
I have learnt that a Neurosurgery resident is an ER magnet, regardless of whether she/he is on call or not.
I have realized and learnt to respect my job’s obligations and requirements.
I am convinced that clear legible/coherent communication is the key to success at any level in the hospital.
I have learnt the pace of advancement in electronics far exceeds the increment in a resident’s financial package.
I have learnt that taking some time off work is as important as keeping your mind on it.
I have learnt that stress is directly proportional to age, rank and the number of colleagues working under you.
I have learnt that some patients would go to any length to get sick leave sanctioned.
I have learnt that there’s no limit to knowledge.
I have learnt that food at all hotels tastes the same, and that having breakfast should be mandatory for all – I have yet to put this in practice though!
I have accepted the fact that the responsibility and concern for a patient under one’s care extends beyond the boundaries of the hospital.
I have learnt that no matter what we do or undo – we’re continuously evolving as humans. Somehow somewhere I see glimpses of the same in my juniors, they’re evolving as well and one day Insha Allah (God-willing) we shall all be able and safe doctors into whose hands the patients willingly put their lives.
At the end of 100 constructive days I have realized that I have changed from a beginner hesitant to make any mistake, to one ready to exercise safe medicine.
The invisible, yet existent umbilical cord always pulls us back to work; Here’s where we belong and here’s where we shall evolve into bright young able physicians of tomorrow – Insha Allah (God-willing) !

This is a composite image - the carb and piston came from a cutaway Ariel engine.
I owned a Trophy TR6SS when I was 17, so I know every little component of this engine, mainly because it spent a lot of time on my garage floor. In the end I had 1/2 race cams and 11:1 compression pistons with Dunstall reverse cone megaphone exhausts. It sounded and felt like I was riding an earthquake!

The biggest building in the "Alter St. Mathäus Kirchhof" apart from the church is the gravesite of the Bankerfamily Hansemann. David Hansemann (1790–1864) ( see for further Information en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Hansemann) created 1851 the Disconto-Gesellschaft - a bank that was merged in 1929 with Deutsche Bank (see en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deutsche_Bank ) the by far bigest Bank of Germany and also one of the largest investment banks in the world..
Really unobtrusive are the graves of Grimm, Jacob Ludwig Carl and Wilhelm Carl with the byname Brothers Grimm , German Brüder Grimm German brothers famous for their classic collections of folk songs and folktales, especially for Kinder- und Hausmärchen (1812–22; generally known as Grimm's Fairy Tales), which led to the birth of the science of folklore. Jacob, especially, did important work in historical linguistics and Germanic philology.

Beginnings and Kassel period.
Jacob Ludwig Carl Grimm and Wilhelm Carl Grimm were the oldest in a family of five brothers and one sister. Their father, Philipp Wilhelm, a lawyer, was town clerk in Hanau and later justiciary in Steinau, another small Hessian town, where his father and grandfather had been ministers of the Calvinistic Reformed Church. The father's death in 1796 brought social hardships to the family; the death of the mother in 1808 left 23-year-old Jacob with the responsibility of four brothers and one sister. Jacob, a scholarly type, was small and slender with sharply cut features, while Wilhelm was taller, had a softer face, and was sociable and fond of all the arts. After attending the high school in Kassel, the brothers followed their father's footsteps and studied law at the University of Marburg (1802-06) with the intention of entering civil service. At Marburg they came under the influence of Clemens Brentano, who awakened in both a love of folk poetry, and Friedrich Karl von Savigny, cofounder of the historical school of jurisprudence, who taught them a method of antiquarian investigation that formed the real basis of all their later work. Others, too, strongly influenced the Grimms, particularly the philosopher Johann Gottfried Herder (1744–1803), with his ideas on folk poetry. Essentially, they remained individuals, creating their work according to their own principles. In 1805 Jacob accompanied Savigny to Paris to do research on legal manuscripts of the Middle Ages; the following year he became secretary to the war office in Kassel. Because of his health, Wilhelm remained without regular employment until 1814. After the French entered in 1806, Jacob became private librarian to King Jérôme of Westphalia in 1808 and a year later auditeur of the Conseil d'État but returned to Hessian service in 1813 after Napoleon's defeat. As secretary to the legation, he went twice to Paris (1814–15), to recover precious books and paintings taken by the French from Hesse and Prussia. He also took part in the Congress of Vienna (September 1814–June 1815). Meantime, Wilhelm had become secretary at the Elector's library in Kassel (1814), and Jacob joined him there in 1816. By that time the brothers had definitely given up thoughts of a legal career in favour of purely literary research. In the years to follow they lived frugally and worked steadily, laying the foundations for their lifelong interests. Their whole thinking was rooted in the social and political changes of their time and the challenge these changes held. Jacob and Wilhelm had nothing in common with the fashionable “Gothic” Romanticism of the 18th and 19th centuries. Their state of mind made them more Realists than Romantics. They investigated the distant past and saw in antiquity the foundation of all social institutions of their days. But their efforts to preserve these foundations did not mean that they wanted to return to the past. From the beginning, the Grimms sought to include material from beyond their own frontiers—from the literary traditions of Scandinavia, Spain, The Netherlands, Ireland, Scotland, England, Serbia, and Finland.
They first collected folk songs and tales for their friends Achim von Arnim and Brentano, who had collaborated on an influential collection of folk lyrics in 1805, and the brothers examined in some critical essays the essential difference between folk literature and other writing. To them, folk poetry was the only true poetry, expressing the eternal joys and sorrows, the hopes and fears of mankind.
Encouraged by Arnim, they published their collected tales as the Kinder- und Hausmärchen, implying in the title that the stories were meant for adults and children alike. In contrast to the extravagant fantasy of the Romantic school's poetical fairy tales, the 200 stories of this collection (mostly taken from oral sources, though a few were from printed sources) aimed at conveying the soul, imagination, and beliefs of people through the centuries—or at a genuine reproduction of the teller's words and ways. The great merit of Wilhelm Grimm is that he gave the fairy tales a readable form without changing their folkloric character. The results were threefold: the collection enjoyed wide distribution in Germany and eventually in all parts of the globe (there are now translations in 70 languages); it became and remains a model for the collecting of folktales everywhere; and the Grimms' notes to the tales, along with other investigations, formed the basis for the science of the folk narrative and even of folklore. To this day the tales remain the earliest “scientific” collection of folktales. The Kinder- und Hausmärchen was followed by a collection of historical and local legends of Germany, Deutsche Sagen (1816–18), which never gained wide popular appeal, though it influenced both literature and the study of the folk narrative. The brothers then published (in 1826) a translation of Thomas Crofton Croker's Fairy Legends and Traditions of the South of Ireland, prefacing the edition with a lengthy introduction of their own on fairy lore. At the same time, the Grimms gave their attention to the written documents of early literature, bringing out new editions of ancient texts, from both the Germanic and other languages. Wilhelm's outstanding contribution was Die deutsche Heldensage (“The German Heroic Tale”), a collection of themes and names from heroic legends mentioned in literature and art from the 6th to the 16th centuries, together with essays on the art of the saga.
While collaborating on these subjects for two decades (1806–26), Jacob also turned to the study of philology with an extensive work on grammar, the Deutsche Grammatik (1819–37). The word deutsch in the title does not mean strictly “German,” but it rather refers to the etymological meaning of “common,” thus being used to apply to all of the Germanic languages, the historical development of which is traced for the first time. He represented the natural laws of sound change (both vowels and consonants) in various languages and thus created bases for a method of scientific etymology; i.e., research into relationships between languages and development of meaning. In what was to become known as Grimm's law, Jacob demonstrated the principle of the regularity of correspondence among consonants in genetically related languages, a principle previously observed by the Dane Rasmus Rask. Jacob's work on grammar exercised an enormous influence on the contemporary study of linguistics, Germanic, Romance, and Slavic, and it remains of value and in use even now. In 1824 Jacob Grimm translated a Serbian grammar by his friend Vuk Stefanović Karadžić, writing an erudite introduction on Slavic languages and literature.
He extended his investigations into the Germanic folk-culture with a study of ancient law practices and beliefs published as Deutsche Rechtsaltertümer (1828), providing systematic source material but excluding actual laws. The work stimulated other publications in France, The Netherlands, Russia, and the southern Slavic countries and has not yet been superseded.
The Göttingen years.
The quiet contentment of the years at Kassel ended in 1829, when the brothers suffered a snub—perhaps motivated politically—from the Elector of Hessen-Kassel: they were not given advancement following the death of a senior colleague. Consequently, they moved to the nearby University of Göttingen, where they were appointed librarians and professors. Jacob Grimm's Deutsche Mythologie, written during this period, was to be of far-reaching influence. From poetry, fairy tales, and folkloristic elements, he traced the pre-Christian faith and superstitions of the Germanic people, contrasting the beliefs to those of classical mythology and Christianity. The Mythologie had many successors all over Europe, but often disciples were not as careful in their judgments as Jacob had been. Wilhelm published here his outstanding edition of Freidank's epigrams. But again fate overtook them. When Ernest Augustus, duke of Cumberland, became king of Hanover, he high-handedly repealed the constitution of 1833, which he considered too liberal. Two weeks after the King's declaration, the Grimms, together with five other professors (the “Göttingen Seven”), sent a protest to the King, explaining that they felt themselves bound by oath to the old constitution. As a result they were dismissed, and three professors, including Jacob, were ordered to leave the kingdom of Hanover at once. Through their part in this protest directed against despotic authority, they clearly demonstrated the academic's sense of civil responsibilities, manifesting their own liberal convictions at the same time. During three years of exile in Kassel, institutions in Germany and beyond (Hamburg, Marburg, Rostock, Weimar, Belgium, France, The Netherlands, and Switzerland) tried to obtain the brothers' services.
The Berlin period.
In 1840 they accepted an invitation from the king of Prussia, Frederick William IV, to go to Berlin, where as members of the Royal Academy of Sciences they lectured at the university. There they began their most ambitious enterprise, the Deutsches Wörterbuch, a large German dictionary intended as a guide for the user of the written and spoken word as well as a scholarly reference work. In the dictionary, all German words found in the literature of the three centuries “from Luther to Goethe” were given with their historical variants, their etymology, and their semantic development; their usage in specialized and everyday language was illustrated by quoting idioms and proverbs. Begun as a source of income in 1838 for the brothers after their dismissal from Göttingen, the work required generations of successors to bring the gigantic task to an end in our day. Jacob lived to see the work proceed to the letter F, while Wilhelm only finished the letter D. The dictionary became an example for similar publications in other countries: Britain, France, The Netherlands, Sweden, and Switzerland. Jacob's philological research later led to a history of the German language, Geschichte der deutschen Sprache, in which he attempted to combine the historical study of language with the study of early history. Research into names and dialects was stimulated by Jacob Grimm's work, as were ways of writing and spelling—for example, he used roman type and advocated spelling German nouns without capital letters.
For some 20 years they worked in Prussia's capital, respected and free from financial worries. Much of importance can be found in the brothers' lectures and essays, the prefaces and reviews (Kleinere Schriften) they wrote in this period. In Berlin they witnessed the Revolution of 1848 and took an active part in the political strife of the succeeding years. In spite of close and even emotional ties to their homeland, the Grimms were not nationalists in the narrow sense. They maintained genuine—even political—friendships with colleagues at home and abroad, among them the jurists Savigny and Eichhorn; the historians F.C. Dahlmann, G.G. Gervinus, and Jules Michelet; and the philologists Karl Lachmann, John Mitchell Kemble, Jan Frans Willems, Vuk Karadžić, and Pavel Josef Šafařik. Nearly all academies in Europe were proud to count Jacob and Wilhelm among their members. The more robust Jacob undertook many journeys for scientific investigations, visiting France, The Netherlands, Belgium, Switzerland, Austria, Italy, Denmark, and Sweden. Jacob remained a bachelor; Wilhelm married Dorothea Wild from Kassel, with whom he had three children: Herman (literary and art historian, 1828–1901), Rudolf (jurist, 1830–89), and Auguste (1832–1919). The graves of the brothers are in the Matthäikirchhof in Berlin.

Photograph taken at an altitude of Seventy nine metres at 13:41pm on Thursday 25th May off Keating Cross Road and Benvenuto Avenue at Victoria Butterfly Gardens in Brentwood Bay on Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada.
This is a Blue Morpho (Morpho Peleides) butterfly, one of the largest butterflies in the world with a wingspan up to eight inches. Light reflects from the microscopic scales on their wingbacks, giving a vivid iridescent appearance, and they are mainly seen active and in flight, resting only briefly. They are found in the tropical rainforests of Latin America from Mexico to Columbia.

Here we see a group of feral Pigeons (Columba Livia domestica), resting on a branch in a prime location close to the lake within the park grounds. It is a relative of a relative of Stock doves and Rock Doves which are the purest of the species.

Hola a todos, muy buenas tardes en este primaveral día domingo. Qué mejor que amenizar el día con este interesante texto que Sebastián Arce Padilla, alias Pelao Tatán redacto para el sitio web "El Quinto Poder".
Partamos con una breve reseña, cosecha personal.
El sistema de transportes "Transantiago" ha causado bastantes dolores de cabezas para quiénes vivimos en Santiago, cómo también la contraposición de dos formas de ver el sistema y respectivamente, darle mejoras. Mientras tanto, expertos en ingeniería de transportes señalan que volver al sistema de las "Micros Amarillas" es prácticamente lanzar una bomba atómica sobre esta ciudad, incluyendo lo que muchos ciudadanos de manera silenciosa piensan, que a pesar de las enormes dificultades experimentadas durante los primeros años, de ninguna manera desean volver a esa dictadura amarilla.
El tema en este caso es que como todos sabemos, una nueva administración ha llegado a conducir los hilos del transporte público, con un marcado énfasis en la denominada "flexibilización de malla". Sí, tal como escribí algunas líneas atrás el nuevo énfasis es la llamada competencia. Cosa que a muchos -me incluyo- no nos gusta para nada.
Y es a partir de este texto donde quisiera expresar el porque esta gestión no me gusta para nada.

Morandé no tiene idea de dónde va la micro

Hace algunas semanas, el titular de Transportes y Telecomunicaciones, Felipe Morandé, anunció 15 medidas para mejorar el Transantiago, aquel plan de transporte urbano aplicado en Santiago, que desde su implementación ha sido un dolor de cabeza para autoridades, usuarios y trabajadores del transporte. Tanto así que el actual ministro lo califica como "mega error de los gobiernos anteriores".
No haremos el análisis político de quién tiene la culpa o qué cosas fallaron, ya que se ha desperdiciado bastante teclado en eso, con comisiones parlamentarias, opinólogos del transporte público, etc. Mejor, preocupémonos en las ideas anunciadas por el secretario de Estado y cómo estas no calzan con las ideas de "mejor transporte" y más inclusivo:
1) Vamos a iniciar un inédito proceso de participación ciudadana, para responder a lo que necesita la gente, no desde un escritorio, sino con los usuarios.
Esto se realiza desde el diseño del plan, en el 2006. Actualmente el conducto regular empieza por los municipios, que proponen ideas de acuerdo a lo solicitado por los vecinos. Luego, las propuestas se evalúan técnicamente (a través de SECTRA) y luego de calcular la real utilidad del servicio, se crea y sale a la calle. El problema, es que muchas veces los mismos vecinos NO hacen uso del nuevo recorrido, y siguen haciendo transbordos o vueltas absurdas. Hay servicios que luego de siete meses de funcionamiento, recién empiezan a tomar público.
2) Vamos a duplicar la capacidad fiscalizadora, para bajar la evasión.
Mientras no exista un factor disuasivo real, no sacamos mucho con llenar de fiscalizadores. Además, el actual proyecto de ley dejó fuera la propuesta de incluir a evasores en una base de datos tipo DICOM, que los excluyera de recibir beneficios fiscales si son sorprendidos metiéndose a los buses gratis. Y también se deja fuera a la mala utilización de pases escolares, una evasión encubierta, pero más masiva de lo que se cree.
3) Vamos a mejorar 150 recorridos para eliminar los trasbordos innecesarios y obligatorios que tanto afectan a las personas.
El trasbordo es LA forma para hacer más eficiente el transporte público. Sólo basta afinar un poco las frecuencias y enseñarle a la gente a utilizar los buses. No sacamos nada alargar recorridos al lote, ya que eso baja las frecuencias de los buses y dispara los costos operacionales. En treinta años el Metro no ha tenido conexión directa entre Gran Avenida y Estación Central y no he visto a nadie reclamar porque tiene que bajarse en Los Héroes para cambiarse de línea. Y ojo, que en la época de las micros amarillas existían recorridos eternos, que una fracción muy pequeña de pasajeros utilizaba completos.
4) Vamos a avanzar en tener frecuencias fijas durante las noches y los fines de semana. Para limitar los tiempos de espera y que la gente sepa cuánto tiempo puede esperar un recorrido.
Eso se intentó en 2007, el problema es que no existe sistema perfecto y siempre hay factores internos o externos que afectan las frecuencias. Y actualmente las frecuencias en la noche y fines de semana son fijas, pero no se publican abiertamente a los usuarios.
5) Vamos a construir la primera vía rápida del Transantiago, que atravesará 4 comunas para tener viajes más cómodos y directos.
Esta "vía expresa" es nada más ni menos que... Avenida Grecia. Este corredor de buses fue construido por el SERVIU y la Municipalidad de Ñuñoa en 1998 y mejorado para Transantiago entre 2007 y 2008. No tiene mayor sentido realizar una obra que ya está hecha y funcionando al 100%. También hay que avisarle al Ministro que hay hartas vías expresas de Transantiago operando (Pedro Aguirre Cerda-Esquina Blanca, Las Rejas Sur-Suiza, Santa Rosa, Pajaritos Oriente, Anillo Intermedio, Vicuña Mackenna, etc). El problema radica en que este mismo Ministro junto con la Subsecretaria Gloria Hutt anunciaron que se estaban reevaluando la construcción de nuevos corredores en carpeta por el SERVIU (Mapocho, San Pablo, Alameda, Providencia, los tramos pendientes de Las Rejas Norte y Departamental, etc), ya que quieren evitar las peleas con los vecinos por el siempre delicado tema de las expropiaciones.
6) Vamos a completar la renovación de más de 800 buses entre 2010 y 2011 para mejorar la comodidad y seguridad de los viajes, permitiendo una mayor accesibilidad a las personas, especialmente para la tercera edad y personas con movilidad reducida.
La renovación depende ÚNICA Y EXCLUSIVAMENTE de las empresas. En el caso de los troncales, tienen tiempo por contrato hasta diciembre para eliminar los "enchulados". Y los alimentadores, no están obligados a hacer renovación total de flota.
7) Vamos a mejorar la información de los viajes, instalando 10 mil nuevas señales de paradas y distribuyendo 800 mil mapas para mejorar la información sobre los recorridos. Porque sabemos que la señal de parada es hoy el lugar de información más importante para las personas.
En enero se empezó una colocación de cenefas en paradas con información, la cual ya estaría obsoleta según el nuevo Manual de Normas Gráficas, diseñado por la Universidad Católica. O sea, un despilfarro de recursos que da vergüenza ajena. A esto hay que sumar que nuevos diseños de paradas elimina información vital como el punto de término del servicio y el horario de funcionamiento del servicio (hay servicios cortos, expresos o nocturnos que no toda la gente conoce en qué horarios y días funcionan).
8) Vamos a mejorar el diseño de las 120 zonas pagas que hoy existen en la ciudad. Para que los usuarios puedan subir a los buses de manera más rápida y segura.
Promesa que se viene dando desde la administración de René Cortázar, y todavía no hay un proyecto claro de cómo mejorarán el diseño. Lo ideal sería que funcionaran 24 horas y los siete días, pero factores como el vandalismo y la seguridad ponen en duda este proyecto.
9) Vamos a informar por mensajes de textos los horarios de llegada de los buses en todos los troncales y un alimentador para que la gente sepa a qué hora viene el bus que le sirve. Porque sabemos que la gente quiere saber a qué hora viene el bus que necesita; lo que le permite administrar mejor su tiempo y tomar decisiones con certeza.
Este sistema opera desde octubre de 2009, estuvo funcionando para todos los servicios hasta abril, y luego se relanzó como "Plan Piloto". El problema, es que no se guía mucho por los GPS de los buses, sino por la programación previa de los servicios, que no siempre coincide.
10) Vamos a hacer más exigente la medición de las frecuencias asignadas y la regularidad para que terminemos con los “trencitos” de buses que provocan esperas innecesarias de las personas. Para controlar que las empresas cumplan con sus recorridos y horarios y los usuarios reciban un mejor servicio.
Terminar con trencitos y desórdenes de frecuencia a través de fiscalización no es suficiente: hay muchos factores que influyen en esto, pasando por el erróneo cálculo de tiempo de recorrido en algunos servicios, la falta de una infraestructura adecuada, generando que los buses compitan por espacio con los autos, la mala instalación de paraderos sólo por dejar contenta a la gente (hay servicios troncales que tienen un paradero por cuadra, aumentando tiempos de viaje de forma innecesaria), y la falta de compromiso de los conductores por cumplir frecuencias dentro de la ruta. A esto, hay que sumarle que el sistema de gestión de flota no funciona como corresponde, y a pesar que se realizó una licitación internacional para implementar dicha tecnología (la que ganó la alemana IVU, que ha realizado este trabajo en ciudades como Londres), la actual administración está pensando descartar a IVU y dejar dicha gestión a cargo de cada empresa operadora. Sobre esto, ya hay un operador que instaló su sistema paralelo, la empresa SuBus Chile (Troncal 2), que le va informando al conductor a cuánto tiempo va de acuerdo a la programación del bus, pero no ayuda a mantener una regularidad de los tiempos de espera.
11) Iniciaremos la instalación de 670 nuevos refugios en distintos puntos de la ciudad para que la gente tenga esperas más cómodas.
El problema de esto es el vandalismo: algunos paraderos han cumplido el récord de durar 24 horas en buenas condiciones: techos rotos, mapas rayados o tapados de carteles e incluso se roban el metal de los asientos.
12) Vamos a instalar mejor información dentro de los buses para entregar más información a las personas que están viajando y favorecer el acceso de personas con movilidad reducida y tercera edad.
El mismo Manual de Normas Gráficas mencionado en nota anterior indica que los buses no son una buena plataforma de información, debido a que una misma máquina pasa por todos los servicios de una empresa (hay troncales con 40 servicios) y no alcanza para colocar los datos de todos los recorridos.
13) Vamos a ejecutar un macro plan a largo plazo para rediseñar el Transantiago para que el sistema logre ser un proyecto financieramente viable que responde a las necesidades de la gente.
Transantiago más que un rediseño radical, necesita afinar ciertos elementos. Lamentablemente, Morandé pretende cambiar todo en pos de la competencia y reducción de costos, como buen neoliberal. El problema es que esto no busca un mejoramiento en el servicio, sino pregúntenle a quienes sufrieron por el mal servicio de las micros amarillas, donde la competencia y la reducción de costos eran la premisa principal.
14) Vamos a luchar por que este año no suba más la tarifa para que la gente no tenga que pagar demás.
El tema financiamiento ha sido el GRAN problema de Transantiago, pero nadie ha mencionado que una parte importante de la torta se la lleva la AFT, la Administradora Financiera de Transantiago, conformada por los Bancos Estado; Chile; BCI; Santander; CMR Falabella y Sonda, asociación la cual ha funcionado de forma deficiente: la gestión de flota ha funcionado pésimo, las cámaras y medidas de seguridad de los buses no las han implementado. Lo extraño del asunto (y sin ánimo de meterse en chanchullo politiquero), es que SONDA es propiedad de Andrés Navarro, amigo íntimo de Sebastián Piñera y parte de su círculo de asesores personales. Otras cosas que hacen dudar del real estado económico del plan, son algunos gastos innecesarios realizados por este Gobierno, como la aplicación del nuevo Manual de Normas Gráficas (que incluye cambio total de letreros, paradas, información en paradas y buses, etc.), o el pago a artistas callejeros para que musicalicen las Zonas Pagas durante la primera quincena de septiembre.
15) Vamos a seguir trabajando con un equipo profesional de excelencia para tomar buenas decisiones técnicas, operativas y financieras.
A título personal (tanto de quién escribió el artículo como mío), tengo serias dudas sobre la capacidad y la excelencia de los equipos profesionales del Ministerio de Transportes. Si se lanzan ideas como la de eliminar los buses articulados sin argumentos de peso (la excusa del rendimiento dada por Morandé no sirve, al hacer el cálculo de "kilómetros por litro" entre rígidos y articulados, y la capacidad de transporte de esos), incluir a los colectiveros en el negocio (cuando son éstos los que generan congestión innecesaria, los que utilizan pistas exclusivas y paraderos para buses bloqueando a los vehículos mayores), y sobre todo, creer que incentivando la competencia entre empresas se va a tener una mejora sustancial en la calidad del servicio, cuando fue precisamente este factor el que hizo colapsar al antiguo sistema de transportes, las "micros amarillas", odiadas por la gran mayoría de los habitantes de Santiago, y que tenían estos mismos problemas del Transantiago y otras externalidades negativas, olvidadas por los medios y las actuales autoridades (competencia extrema en las calles, alta tasa de accidentes, maltrato a pasajeros, evasión encubierta, nula mantención o renovación de flota, situaciones ilegales, delincuencia, etc). Y lo peor de esto, es que cuando se ha aplicado el factor competitivo en Transantiago, en casos puntuales, no ha servido de nada.
En Vitacura, desde julio de 2009, que lo tienen más que claro por la "competencia" entre los servicios 405 y 502, la cual no existe en la práctica.
En resumen, el gran problema de Transantiago es que todos tenemos claro el diagnóstico, pero nadie, clara la solución.

Curtiss P-40C Tomahawk "Flying Tiger"...for those that grew up on Camano Island (I for one) and the Stanwood area in the 60's you may have known Robert (Bob) Neale who was a Stanwood School District bus driver on Camano Island (my bus driver) and also owned Maple Grove Resort on the north end of Camano. Did you know that he was the top flying ace with the American Volunteer Group (AVG), amassing 13 victories in 1941 prior to the United States entering World War ll ? The photo is from Paul Allen's Flying Heritage Collection at Paine Field Snohomish County Airport, Everett Washington. Although the FHC does not mention it on their website, this plane has the paint scheme once used by Bob Neale when he was a pilot for the AVG. Today was my first opportunity to photograph this aircraft and it is the world's only remaining P-40C in flying condition. Bob passed away in 1994 and I wish I could talk to him today and listen to his stories. I have many more photos to go through but out of respect and admiration for Bob I wanted to get this one done and posted immediately.
