Like so many of us, I did not grow up vegan. I ate meat, dairy, eggs and other animal products. I went to circus and zoo, wore leather and fur trims on my winter coats. I even had summer pets for several summers when I was a child...two innocent lambs who were loved during the summer and slaughtered when the colder weather arrived. We betrayed them, their trust, their unconditional love. 💔 I will never forgive myself selfishly agreeing to accept their sacrifice. 😢 I did not know better. I was happily oblivious to animal suffering and cruelty. To speciesism.
Through my kids I learned about compassionate living and choices. Through them I looked into the horrors of animal agriculture, the lives of these beautiful, sentient beings animal agriculture pays big bucks to hide. To the suffering and mistreatment of the animals in testing labs in the name of science. We ALL want to live our lives happily, respected and loved.
I have been vegan for five years this Thanksgiving. The best decision I have ever made. I wish I would have known and opened my eyes earlier.

Remembrance Sunday is a national opportunity to remember the service and sacrifice of all those that have defended our freedoms and protected our way of life.
We remember the Armed Forces, and their families, from Britain and the Commonwealth, the vital role played by the emergency services and those who have lost their lives as a result of conflict or terrorism.
A day to mark our respect and be thankful to those who died so that we may live freely today.

^w^ Its been a while since i've taken pictures of River haha~
Whoa! Actually its been a long while since i've done any updates on River what the heck?! xDDD Opps, I have no idea why, I guess because i've been caught up in so many things and have been super busy I just forgot haha~
^u^ But anyways, yeah! I re-painted River's cat ears and made him an alpaca wig quite a while ago but just never took pictures of him with them for some reason haha. Well, I did actually want to make him his own Egyptian necklace that was proper to his color scheme and would have looked better with his newly painted ears but I haven't had the time to do so yet OTL
c: But for now he's borrowing the necklace I made for Raum. It looks super nice on him too, its just the colors are too traditional for him haha~ xD
Anyways...Its hard to explain, but...ack, I wanted to make an all black wig for River because canonically his hair was naturally all black but later on when he was older it changed to his signature half-black half-lavender look as the result a sort of magical "deal" he made. More than anything, what River wanted most in life was to be special. Someone different, grand, exciting, unique...someone who would be respected and adored for being one of a kind in a world where uniqueness is valued above all else. In his world, the value of a person's life is highly determined by how "rare" they are, which prior to making this deal River was considered to be as common as they come. He yearned to be one whom could live a lavish life fit for a king as opposed to his life of servitude and strife as a simple alley cat stuck in a liter box. When given the opportunity to become something more than what he was he took that deal without hesitation, accepting all the costs that came with it. Exactly what all was given to him and what payment he gave in return is a story for a different day~ While upon first glance, the only change that one would notice is the purple in his hair and a "tattoo" covering the entirety of his back there is more to his majesty to behold should he wish to reveal it~
Anyways, despite having his future child, Raum, as a doll, I've always wanted him to have not only a wig that represents him from after that deal (when he's older), but also before~ xD It is super weird imagining him at that time when I see him and Raum together on my shelf though haha. In the future i'll be making him his split color wig as well either out of alpaca or viscose fiber but I happened to have a fair bit of black alpaca laying around so I went ahead and made the all-black one first.
xD His ears also will ideally match better with his split wig as well because the purple inner color will mesh better but yeah haha. I also painted them in a stylistic way rather than realistic as I did with Raum's ...though I'm not sure I like them as much as his. The gold pieces are also hard to explain...they are like "ear cuffs" for cat ears. They are like earrings that wrap around his ears if that makes sense. Its something that he canonically wears in his story so I thought it would be fun to try and recreate it in his dolly form haha~
;3; He's also stolen these Oscardoll eyes which originally belonged to Rumor but now belong to Etzel (but Etzel is in a state of limbo atm) and River is borring them just because these are literally the only eyes that I like in him. I actually did buy him his own pair of Oscar eyes but, wouldn't you know it, I hated them in him. OF COURSE. Its a conspiracy at this point. Its my destiny to be forever tormented by never being able to have eyes for River that I like, are proper to his character, and fit properly in his head. UGHHHHHH

Rocroi, 1643: where the Tercios lost everything but honour and gallantry

Despite the heavy defeat, our people behaved with such bravery that even the French recognised it.
At Rocroi they beated us, but even when bent and disjointed we also fought back, right down to the last drop of blood. Three hundred and seventy years have passed since the lands of Rocroi were so generously watered by our people with such a waste of life, valour and gallantry as it is seldom seen.
It was there at Rocroi, between France and Belgium, yes, in the Ardennes, just where the Americans faced a terrible Nazi counter-offensive seven decades ago, that our Tercios lost everything except honour and gallantry. Until their last breath, when their bodies were already martyred by countless wounds and bruises, our compatriots resisted those great Spaniards who, thousands of kilometres from their homeland managed to ensure that with their blood, sweat and tears (brave men are not afraid to cry) the sun did not set on Spain for many long and glorious years. Legendary warrior ardour, which we did not lose even in the direst straits.
The Spanish troops were commanded by the Portuguese knight Francisco de Melo, but the day had not yet dawned, when on 19 May 1643, and in the said Rocroi (which the Spaniards had besieged, and was ready for the assault) the innumerable French soldiers launched themselves, it is said that at about three in the morning, against our countrymen.
The French were commanded by Louis II de Bourbon-Condé, Duke of Enghien, and the Spanish troops by the Portuguese knight Francisco de Melo, then Captain General of the Tercios de Flandes, who awaited the arrival of Jean de Beck’s support. For six long, Dantesque hours, twenty-some thousand against twenty-some thousand on each side, pikes, swords, spears, arquebuses, cannonballs, disembowelled horses, dreadful wounds, legions of heroes in the dust, blows, stabs, stabs, and stabs, urine and mud… and a gigantic legion of dead on both sides. Very few, though there were some, but hardly any with a surname of our own, refused that terrible chalenge of History. They had to leave their skin and guts behind, and the Spaniards of those memorable Tercios certainly did,
The cruel chessboard of Rocroi
But let us get down to the cruel chessboard of the terrible game of Rocroi. The chronicles tell us that the French left flank was commanded by La Ferté, the centre by L’Hôpital, and on the right by a certain Gassion. The rearguard was under the command of the Marquis de Sirot.
The Spaniards thought at first that the French were preparing to reinforce the town and that for the moment at least, they were not thinking of a battle in the open. So our countrymen placed the fearsome Spanish Tercios in the vanguard, the privilege they had earned by fighting like wild beasts for decades, while the Walloon and German mercenaries formed the rearguard led by Count Paul-Bernard de Fontaine, a fellow from Lorraine, i.e. French, sixty-six years old at the time, but serving the King of Spain as best as God gave him to understand.
Meanwhile, the imperial cavalry was positioned on the flanks. The right flank was filled with Alsatian troops under the Count of Isenburg, while the Flemish cavalry, commanded by the Duke of Alburquerque, was on the left and, ahead of them all, the artillery.
Of course, and not always with loyalty, chronicles and chronicles of this battle have been written over the centuries. Everything has been said and written, but the course of history has clarified many things and provided sufficient clues to enable us today to construct a fairly accurate account of the carnage.
The French were looking very happy, flags in the wind, but suddenly…they mounted up, bit their spurs and galloped with full force against our right wing, swords sharpened in the night, but suddenly they came upon a large host of emboldened Imperial arquebusiers on a small hill. The Spanish gunpowder fell like a thunderbolt on the French cavalry, causing them considerable damage. To finish them off, the Flemish centaurs, commanded by Alburquerque, arrived at a gallop and, after a few blows and thrusts, they launched themselves at the French artillery from which they stole several pieces.
Strategists after the event
Expert strategists say (knowingly and a posteriori, of course) that perhaps at that time, with the French disorganised and battered, our leader, this Melo, should have taken a gamble and given the enemy a clean sweep. But he did not do so, while the leader of the Gauls, Enghien, who knew how to re-establish order in his lines and move on to the counter-attack, was quick and wise and managed to cause a great deal of harm among our people.
Many Spaniards left this world, others retreated as fast as their strength allowed them, while the Duke of Alburquerque resisted at the head of his riders like a bull, This surname has always been one of confidence and brilliant riding, as one of the heirs of this Duke, also the Duke of Alburquerque, the eighteenth of the lineage, a brilliant rider called Beltrán de Osorio, and at the time faithful squire of Don Juan de Borbón throughout his life would demonstrate on our racecourses a long time later.
But it is time to return to the field of martyrdom of Rocroi, where Mars wanted to wear his best but always sinister combat clothes.
The next terrible onslaught of the French commanded by Gassion came against good company of our loyal infantry in the form of several squadrons. The fight was hand to hand and we would even say soul to soul. In it, we lost a good handful of Spaniards on foot, with sublime hearts, and also some of their captains, such as the Count of Fontaine and officers such as the Count of Villalba and Antonio de Velandia, brave commanders of the Tercio until that day when they signed the last contract, the one that is sealed before the Grim Reaper, for the sake of beloved Spain.
Wounded and dead formed a frightful mess. Things were getting more than ugly on our left flank and the commanding general himself, Francisco de Melo, galloped towards it in order to recompose the situation, while the French fell on the Spanish rearguard, nourished by Germans and Walloons, and produced a gigantic scare in it. The wounded, the dead and the prisoners made up a gigantic jumble of horror.
There was no area left on the Rocroi field where there was no fighting to the last breath. The French and Spaniards showed on the field with their blood and with their generous guts why they were nations to be feared when there was a fight involved. There, at Rocroi, even the chiefs were taken prisoner, like the French La Ferté. Another of the main commanders, La Barre, passed away there and then, while L’Hôpital was also wounded and the Captain-General himself on that day, Enghien, could not get enough to cheer up his troops, now here, then there, then there. But however Spanish we may be, and let us never forget the events of the Second of May, we must recognise that that Frenchman Enghien got it right.
Enghien, the French chief, had big balls. He took a gamble at that moment of the battle. He pulled on the bridles of what was left of his cavalry and there he went against the Spanish army’s core, driving a terrible fang through its centre and isolating the Spanish Tercios from the foreign allies in the process. We were screwed. Isenburg’s cavalry, scattered, the Italian Tercios fleeing in disarray and Melo, who certainly did not have his day, waiting for the arrival of the supposed reinforcements sent by Beck, who did not come out of this morning very well either, as some say that he arrived on time but when he found out that things were going from bad to worse he did not get involved, while others say that he appeared in the fight when nothing could be done.
Melo was caught in the act
Melo was almost caught by surprise by the French, although he was able to take cover with a troop from an Italian Tercio that did nothing but run for cover whenever the French appeared. Our troops, meanwhile, gathered the few remaining troops, more or less unharmed, but full of stitches, cuts and blows, and joined together to form a large rectangle with pikes locked and muskets ready, united in a single body as the Macedonian phalanxes had done many centuries before. At the first possible moment, they pulled the musketry and broke the first French attacks, to the point that they almost blew the brains out of Generalissimo Enghien’s head, who was shot through the breastplate and kissed the ground at Rocroi, his horse being torn to shreds on the spot.
Let us recognise that the French also rose to the occasion, and despite the bravery of our compatriots, they returned to the charge again and again. On and on they went. And there was no more talk of gunpowder, arquebuses or muskets. The time had come for steel to decide who would win the day. Close combat, knife thrust and cut, Spaniards and Frenchmen killed each other thoroughly. After several assaults and attacks, only a few veterans of the Tercios de Garcíez and Villalba were left standing, and with their weapons already dented, they defended themselves by biting down on anything that smelt French. But then came the end.
And on this point, historians, four centuries later, still disagree. It seems, however, that the wily Enghien offered an honourable negotiation to our people before things could be turned upside down by the arrival of reinforcements. It is said that generous, the French leader offered to respect the life and freedom of the remaining survivors, to let them fly their flags and bear their arms, and even, if they wanted to take the road to their beloved Spain, to provide them with a silver bridge.
No guns, but without dismay
Some of our people accepted. But others did not and remained in the fray, even though we had no guns left. In the end, they had to surrender but they lost neither honour nor pride, and the French remained faithful to their generous offers of surrender. Five thousand of our men would never again see our sun, nor our land; they remained forever, lost but immortal, on the sands of Rocroi. Despite the destruction, the Tercios would still put up a good fight and would win resounding and resounding victories such as that of Valenciennes, also against the French.
For history, perhaps better for legend, is the reply of one of our survivors when asked by a French officer about the number of our people at Rocroi. “Count the dead”, replied that gallant Spaniard, honourable even in the last moments. We fought and we were beaten. We lost the battle, yes, but we did not lose our shame.

Known to the Lummi First nation people ( Lhaq'temish) as Kwelshán ('Shooting place' in Nooksack), to the Halkomelem as Kwelxá:lxw, to Lushootseed speakers along the Skagit River as Teqwúbe7 “snow-capped peak'', to the Nooksack language as Kweq’ Smánit (“white mountain'') and also known as Koma Kulshan, (pronounced kō-ō’mah’ kool-shän’), the name for the Middle Fork which originates from the glaciers such as Deming and Thunder on the western slopes, she is an active glaciated andesitic stratovolcano in the Cascade Volcanic Arc and the North Cascades of Washington State in the United States, standing 3,286 metres tall and was first ascended in 1868, her last eruption recorded in 1880
The name Mount Baker first appeared in print in Captain Vancouver’s 1798 narrative of his voyage around Vancouver Island. Legend has it that his third-lieutenant, Joseph Baker, was the first to spot the mountain while they sailed into Dungeness Bay on April 30th, 1792. Also known by the Lummi as Kwud-Shad, and Koba (meaning 'high mountain always covered with snow', was the Skagit name.

At this point we have just passed the ventilation shafts that yesterday saw our unfortunate encounter with Big Man and the Ochrona. I am captivated by the mining backdrop here so pile out of the car and run about fifty metres over the grassland to take this view. As I press the shutter I hear Sven shouting "Duncan, stop taking photos". I look over and a white car has pulled up behind ours and its driver is speaking earnestly to Sven. I walk back and ask Sven what the matter is., as if we didn't know...He tells me we are being told to please stop photography and leave the area. I don't mind now, it seems that our visit here today has worked out well, given that we have successfully encountered and photographed this train. I agree, we shall, and actually must leave. We politely let the man know that we respect his wishes, he seems more worried than angry, we get in our car and drive away. He follows behind as far as the turn off for the control station at Shakhtinsk, which is where he leaves us and drives towards. It would seem that the train crew alerted the railway controllers who then sent the man out to stop us. That we don't encounter any other authority here seems a minor miracle.

I've been mulling over ideas all week. I had lots of ideas, but many needed props I don't own. Then today in my daughter's bedroom I just grabbed some of her things and put them together.
A homage to my daughter!
This was not the still life I had envisaged.
I had a lot of trouble shooting it as I don't have any studio equipment-no clamps for holding fabric or reflectors etc. So I just draped some white fabric over the table, and the backs of chairs. I also tried to use off camera flash but my trigger wouldn't play ball :-(
The lighting is halogen ceiling lights, a pendant light, window light (The daylight is still limited here in Scotland at this time of year)and I angled a headtorch onto a silver emergency blanket to bounce some light onto the objects.
So timewise:
Idea and composition 15 minutes,
Shooting and faffing about with lighting: 60 minutes. Hand held.
Number of shots 60
Selection and editing 5 minutes.
This is my first attempt at something like this and I am quite pleased with the result. There is a pink cast to the photo, and although I quite like it, I don't know why it's there, and so it bothers me from that respect.
Also, some ghosting of the title-why is that?

Para la ubicación de la Fundación cultural hispano-portuguesa se eligen los restos del antiguo convento de San Francisco, del siglo XIV, que atendiendo a las preferencias de las órdenes mendicantes se había establecido extramuros de la ciudad, al otro lado del Duero. Este recinto donde se reunieron los Comuneros castellanos, sirvió de acuartelamiento a las tropas francesas, que produjeron daños irreparables en su estructura. La exclaustración definitiva del convento se produjo en los años treinta del siglo XIX tras la desamortización.
Seguimos a Joaquín Hernández Martín en su Guía de Arquitectura de Zamora “Desde los Orígenes al Siglo XXI” … En estas congregaciones era habitual la construcción en tapial, a excepción de las cabeceras, por lo que no es de extrañar que tras el abandono que siguió a la desamortización fuera lo único que se conservara, junto a las capillas que tenía adosadas, de los Ocampo y de los Escalante -al norte y sur respectivamente-, de finales del siglo XV y comienzos del XVI, y la del Deán, obra de Gil de Hontañón, en la parte posterior del ábside del siglo XVI. También subsistió un cuerpo de celdas y la parte de bodega que se encontraba bajo él, y los restos del antiguo claustro, fechados a comienzos del siglo XVII. El ábside se mantiene como evocadora ruina alrededor de la cual se asienta ordenadamente el nuevo edificio. El proyecto arquitectónico para la sede de la Fundación establece dos zonas bien diferenciadas: la histórica y la de nueva construcción. La edificación de nueva planta es de volumetría simple y sus fachadas conjugan grandes huecos acristalados con revestimientos de acero cortén, contrastando con los muros de piedra preexistentes, un ejemplo espléndido de la nueva arquitectura española. El resultado es un conjunto funcionalmente eficaz, que muestra a la ciudad su nítida fisonomía a través de la combinación de la vieja fábrica de piedra con el vidrio y el acero de los revestimientos que dominan la intervención actual.
El programa, sobre un espacio de 8000 m², de los que 3500 m² son construidos, incluye zona administrativa y cultural, residencia, y aulas con biblioteca. La zona más cercana al acceso, ahora ajardinada, se sitúa frente a las restauradas ruinas del ábside, ocupando el espacio que antiguamente llenaba la nave de la iglesia. En torno a ese espacio se emplazan las aulas y la biblioteca, con la sala de videoconferencias en la capilla del Escalante, la Sala de reuniones en la capilla de los Ocampo y la Sala de Exposiciones en la Capilla del Deán. Unido por la cubierta se encuentra el salón de actos y la cafetería, sobre la antigua bodega y donde estuvieran las celdas demolidas. En la parte baja del cuerpo de aulas se abren hacia el sur las habitaciones de residencia, formando un segundo patio más privado junto a las edificadas frente a ellas apoyadas contra la medianera. Integra un conjunto funcionalmente eficaz a través de la combinación de la vieja fábrica de piedra con el vidrio y el acero de los revestimientos que dominan la actual intervención.
Manuel de las Casas comenta su proyecto: "La propuesta para la creación de la Fundación Rei Afonso Henriques en este conjunto de restos góticos es sencilla: potenciar esa misteriosa belleza de lo incompleto que hace evocar tiempos pasados desde la indudable capacidad plástica de la ruina, y articular, con leves volumetrías, una secuencia de espacios que den respuesta a un programa. Esta idea, junto a la huella de lo que fue el conjunto conventual, las privilegiadas vistas sobre el río y la ciudad de Zamora conducen a la solución adoptada: un edificio en forma de "L", que delimita el antiguo vacío de la Iglesia, y que divide el espacio en dos: un jardín de carácter público, que antes estuvo ocupado por tres naves de la Iglesia, y otro que ocupa la posición del primer claustro del antiguo conjunto conventual".

Here we see a male Tufted duck (Aythya Fuligula), also known as the tufted pochard. It is a small diving duck with a population of close to one million birds, found in northern Eurasia. The scientific name is derived from Ancient Greek aithuia, an unidentified seabird mentioned by authors including Hesychius and Aristotle, and Latin fuligo 'soot' and gula 'throat'.

It's sunday, it's summer and of course that means rain showers and rare sunlight in the UK! No matter, a sunflower always makes us happy, so here is one in our garden.....

The Common sunflower (Helianthus annuus) is an annual plant with a daisy-like flower face. Its scientific name comes from the Greek words helios (“sun”) and anthos (“flower”). The flowers come in many colors (yellow, red, orange, maroon, brown), but they are commonly bright yellow with brown centers that ripen into heavy heads filled with seeds. Sunflowers make excellent cut flowers, and many attract bees, birds, and butterflies.

Here we see a Lesser Redpoll (Acanthis cabaret), a passerine measuring around 11-12cms with a wingspan of 20-23cms. It is sadly on the Red conservation list.
