Today, 16 January 2018, saw the funeral of one of Greater Manchester Police’s longest serving and most respected former motorway officers.
Roger Coles served with Lancashire Constabulary, ultimately becoming a traffic officer, before becoming a member of the GMP’s Motorway Group, with which he served for many years.
During his time with the group he played a major part in training officers in motorway policing.
On retirement as a police officer in 1996 Roger became a traffic management officer for the Force with responsibility for motorways.
Since 2013 Roger had been working in community relations for a company engaged in the upgrading of parts of the local motorway network to ‘smart’ motorways.
The funeral was attended by Roger’s family and friends, including many former colleagues from the world of policing.
Greater Manchester Police motorcyclists led the funeral cortege along with a restored GMP Range Rover dating from the early 1980s.

The above is why I hate snowmobilers. They have zero respect for private property, for nature, for other human beings. Some actually remove themselves and innocent others from the gene pool by their own stupendous ignorance. Just this winter snowmobilers have died from
~suffocation by avalanches they've triggered killing themselves and others
~decapitation from driving through barb wire fence
~internal bleeding from collision with another snowmobiler
~ and the most recently a woman sledding on a lake drove her snowmobile straight into a parked truck with her daughter on board. The Mom died on impact of an apparently horrifying head injury ( her helmet flew off), the daughter survived.
We measure when Spring has arrived, here, when the first snowmobiler drowns because his sled breaks through the thin ice. It is quite amazing to me how people with normal intellect can put on a skidoo helmet and all grey matter immediately ceases to function - leaving basically a jelly-fish brain in control of 500+ pounds of metal at speeds in excess of 100 mph
Recently snowmobilers ignored all the No Trespassing signs I put up and ran my mares through deep snow causing one to abort her foal (due to detachment of the placenta). This filly is the result of breeding I had planned for years and it was heartbreaking to see her laying in the snow, her mare standing over her unwilling to let the coyotes, magpies or ravens feed on her tiny little premature body - she was not due until May. I was fortunate not to lose my mare or my lose my own common sense and go out and take care of the offenders with some all too tempting shotgun justice. I can only hope that the same idiots take a trip to the mountains this winter and go high-marking in avalanche territory or congregate on the ice of a deep lake in the Spring. Meantime, I'm working on having legislation passed to end snowmobilers from being able to operate their machines anywhere but on their own property and Crown Land.
Wish me luck!

When the bikeway and footpath was built, the tree stood in the way. Rather than to eliminate the problem, the path was built around the tree. A bench to rest and a bin was mounted. The problem is still there, but it became useful. Switzerland, Aug 6, 2013.

Argentina: President Cristina Fernandez
“In Argentina we have developed a strong process of social inclusion which has brought about more equal opportunities for women. We have active programmes and policies such as universal benefits for pregnancies, for children and education all the way up to university. This has made it possible together with gender equality laws to protect women. … Even in more developed societies, there continues to be gender inequality with respect to access to political decision-making. … We need to break cultural barriers which have considered women for centuries to be an inferior or less intelligent being. And that is why I think that policies must also be aimed at [transforming] culture, at empowering women not only as as a matter of obligation under conventions or international treaties, but that there be a deep conviction in the hearts of men and of women… to bring down taboos and prejudices against us. … In Argentina we have achieved a high degree of equality that should also be extended to youth and other sectors of society.”
World leaders convene at the United Nations on 27 September 2015 for the “Global Leaders’ Meeting on Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment: A Commitment to Action” to personally commit to ending discrimination against women by 2030 and announce concrete and measurable actions to kick-start rapid change in their countries.

Does Detroit want your help? The short answer is, of course they do. The reality, as often is the case in Detroit, is a bit more complicated than short answers. The city clearly needs help but old politics and bitterness find a way to continually disrupt any meaningful effort to overhaul the city. And meaningful effort is the minimum the city requires. That is the bleak, underlying, issue behind the recent news surrounding the city finances. What is remarkable are the actions of citizens throughout the city taking matters into their own hands in the face of the circus downtown and in Lansing. While the political hacks and their cronies posture and preen for the cameras and their vested constituents, folks in the neighborhood are rebuilding, creating parks and community gardens. Turning barren, empty lots and burned out relics into useful spaces for their neighbors. The politicians won’t save the city, only the citizens can save the city. In the long run I bet they will.
I grew up just a few miles west of Brightmoor. As long as I can remember this area of the city had a tough reputation. My father was raised a few east of this area on the Westside and he tells me when he was a kid, back in the war years, Brightmoor was to be avoided. Recent years have been even less kind to this neighborhood, if you can imagine that. The population has dwindled from over 20,000 at the beginning of the decade, down to around 12,000 today. That is on the heels of another 20 years of steady population loss. It all adds up to vacancy- house, businesses, lots- you name it. Several community groups are fighting back and converting the open space into parks and gardens. This is being done with little help from the city. Frankly, it is likely being done in spite of the city, seeing how city officials hate folks taking action without their permission. It may be years or generations before this area of the city fills with houses and businesses again. In the meantime, this community is fighting the blight and trying to create a truly livable neighborhood. That, my friends, is the city’s best hope for a future.
