Photograph taken at an altitude of Two metres at 11.19am on Monday 29th May 2014 off 2903 Ocean Boulevard, Victoria, on the Esquimalt Lagoon Migratory Bird Sanctuary, on the Juan De Fuca Strait, Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada.

The Lagoon is one of seven Migratory Bird Sanctuaries in British Columbia, and an important stopover for birds journeying between North and South America. Visitors include geese and Swans, Bald Eagles and Great Blue Herons, plus many other species of birds.

The Great Blue Heron (Ardea Herodias) is a wading bird in the Heron family Ardeidae and found in North America, Central America, the Caribbean and Galapagos Islands. One of the largest of Herons, it has a head to tail length of 01-137 centimetres (36-54 inches) and a wingspan of 187-201 centimetres (66-79 inches). They are found where my family live, and naturally very wary of mankind, flying off as soon as you are within fifty to one hundred yards of them.

Tan-y-Bwlch railway station on the Ffestiniog Narrow Gauge Railway in Gwynedd, North Wales.

From 1863 until 1873, the only regular passing station for trains was at the former horse stage at Hafod y Llyn, a few hundred yards, down route, south west, from Tan-y-Bwlch. Hafod y Llyn opened for passengers on 6 January 1865 but was very difficult of access. It is just over 7 miles (11 km) from Porthmadog, and horses were changed there from 1836 to 1863 as well as at several other lineside stables. There is little to see of the location now, apart from a widening of the formation, and a gate into the woods.

Hafod y Llyn was replaced by the new station at Tan-y-Bwlch which opened in July 1873 and closed to passengers on 15 September 1939.

Passenger service to Tan-y-Bwlch was resumed on 5 April 1958, and the station was the terminus of the railway until Dduallt was reopened in 1968. However, Tan-y-Bwlch continued as the main station for the upper part of the line for years afterwards, as Dduallt had very limited facilities and no road access.

Mr and Mrs Will Jones have long been associated with Tan-y-Bwlch station. They lived in the station house from their marriage in 1929 to their retirement in 1968. In the 1930s and again in the 1950s and 1960s, the late Bessie Jones gained world-wide fame as the station-mistress wearing traditional Welsh costume and serving teas in the station house. Will Jones was a well-respected track man and passed on some of his skills to countless volunteers over the final 14 years of his employment.

„I respect all German people. You are so good.“

Alban, sei herzlich willkommen in Deutschland. Deine Offenheit und Freundschaft haben mich heute sehr berührt. Danke, dass es Dich gibt. Friede mit Dir.

The North Carolina Museum of Art has a large display of sculptures of French artist Auguste Rodin (1840-1917). This is my favorite. When I was there, the late afternoon sun coming in made every photo almost impossible. Neither the color nor the black and white convey the full impact of this masterful depiction of anguish. I never realized how much emotion can be conveyed in bronze. This viewing experience has enhanced appreciation of sculpture in general and of Rodin in specific.

Edward III, King of England, claimed authority over France at that time. In 1346 he began an 11-month siege of the port city of Calais in an early battle in the Hundred Years’ War. Unable to take the city by attack, Edward decided to starve the city into submission. His plan succeeded. He would spare the lives of the citizens of Calais if six of its prominent leaders would come to his encampment; they would be barefoot and without headwear, nooses around their neck, and hand over the keys to the city and beg for mercy. Six burghers ultimately volunteered in this act of selfless heroism. They expected to be executed but were saved through the intervention of England’s pregnant queen, Philippa of Hainault. She feared the killing of the burghers would be a bad omen for the birth of her child. Pierre de Wissant is one of those six burghers.

To honor this act of self-sacrifice, the city of Calais commissioned Rodin in 1885 to execute a monument. His finished work was The Burghers of Calais (Les Bourgeois de Calais). Rodin used the head of Pierre de Wissant alone in a larger-than life sculpture. The modeling of the head was done in 1884-1885 and enlarged in 1909. The figure in the North Carolina Museum of Art was cast in 1980 by the Musée Rodin.

The bust shows Pierre de Wissant with parted lips, eyes nearly shut, head leaning slightly to the side, and an elongated neck—all features contributing to the pathos of the situation of self-denial and sacrifice. His features reveal the emaciation resulting from the effort to starve out the city. His decision shows in the facial agony to sacrifice his life for his fellow citizens. Rodin remarkably creates a human being in flesh and blood using only bronze.

The Frank M. Rose House is located in Waterford, New London County, Connecticut; it's across the street (Rope Ferry Road) from the First Baptist Church of Waterford. Possibly dating from circa 1840, the dwelling underwent changes circa 1870 resulting in a highly ornamented Italianate home. The 2-story structure with a gable roof and a single chimney features a heavily bracketed cornice. A circular window with decorative muntins is in each gable end. The detailed wraparound porch features an arched frieze and square recessed chamfered posts, which allows for the vertical green recessed areas to provide an artistic accent. Throughout the windows have hoods, and the architrave at the front entrance is eared, with small ornamental pieces projecting from the molding. A singular feature are the cornerposts consisting of octagonal engaged columns. The foundation of the structure is stone and brick. There is a basement to the building. The house is 1,792 square feet with 4 bedrooms and 2 baths. It is part of the Jordan Village Historic District listing on the National Register of Historic Places; the historical district was listed August 23, 1990 with reference ID #90001289.

Red sandstone quoins; predominantly stone mullions at ground; timber mullions at 1st floor. Basket-arched loggia (infilled in bay to left) comprising fluted pilasters and decorative spandrel carving. "ANO D 1896" centred in apex above right.

A fine example of a 'Jacobean in harl and half timber' golf club, with fine detailing, massing, use of materials and including a high quality complimentary interior decorative scheme. This large purpose-built golf club is relatively unaltered and has an important historical connection to the history of golf in Scotland.

The Royal Burgess Golfing Society of Edinburgh holds claim to being the oldest golfing society in the world, with references to it being instituted in 1735 and has since then forged a rich and colourful part of the history of Edinburgh and the game of golf. The club's members first played golf on Bruntsfield Links and used the Golf Tavern as a makeshift clubhouse.

The architect of the Royal Burgess, Robert Macfarlane Cameron, was born in Edinburgh. He was articled to David and John Bryce on 14 September 1875, remaining there as an assistant after completing his apprenticeship. In 1881 he joined the staff of Robert Matheson at the Office of Works as a temporary draughtsman, moving to the Prison Board Architects' Department in 1882.

a lil' respect for one another, goes a long way.

well, now Emília will take a long bath, let's respect her privacy (she's shy :)

Parking for the old folks in Kinsale, County Cork.

A little kool aid ish for my standards of "good for you flavored water". The taste reminds me of that old Pepsi Fruit Works cranberry apple. Wimpy is laughing at it because it knows it will never compete with Vitamin water.

A friend that works in the biz says that this is, "Coke Consolidated/BYB's answer to Vitaminwater. "

[This set contains 8 photos] The J. Sidna Allen house (1911) in Fancy Gap, Virginia is a timber frame one-and-a-half-story Queen Anne on a brick foundation. Diamond-shaped shingles cover the upper portion of the building, and ornamental wood trim abounds. It has a cross-gable slate roof intersected by dormer windows and a hexagonal tower capped by a cone. The roof line is complex as a result of the dormers and tower. The Eastlake brackets and scalloping in the cornices correspond to the brackets and flat drops of the porch (best seen in image #6). The front gable roof and front dormer roof ridges formerly had a pattern of iron cresting them, which I assume will appear on the restored structure. There are two exterior brick chimneys and an interior one, each capped with a stone course, four stone insets and corbelled brickwork at the top.

The porch has a shed roof with shingles, brackets and scalloping; at one corner is a gazebo with a conical slate roof and a banquet of wood decoration. Above the front entrance, and connected to a door in the tower, was a balcony (missing at this time in the restoration process). The porch support columns and turned balusters are also currently missing. A small side porch on one side of the house shows a similar pattern of decoration. The entrance has sidelights and a rectangular transom. The molded trim, simulating piers, occurs as window surrounds as well. Most of the windows are temporarily covered: they originally were stained or leaded, many with intricate patterns. Some were 3-part, showing a classical Palladian influence. Some were decorated with a border of smaller colored panes in Queen Anne-style.

Steps led from the road up the hill to the front porch; at present, they are not there. It's easy to see the beauty of this home, even in its pre-restoration state by the Carroll County Historical Society. Architecturally significant, the J. Sidna Allen House was placed on the National Register of Historic Places July 15, 1974 with ID # 74002112

Allen and his wife, who designed their own home, enjoyed it for about a year before the state of Virgnia confiscated the property. Then occurred the Hillsville Massacre of 1912 involving the Allen family in a melee where the judge and some county officials were killed. Sidna Allen was sentenced to life imprisonment; two members of his family were executed. A superb discussion on the Hillsville Massacre and its cast is found at theroanoker.com/interests/history/hillsville-massacre .

This photo has uncertainties. It probably was taken in Waterford, Connecticut. But possibly in Niantic, East Lyme just across the Niantic River. I've labeled these as lobster pots but they might not be. They are much larger the the crab pots I know from growing up in eastern Virginia.

If anyone has a correction to the object and the location, please let me know/
