[A series of 6 photos] This circa 1900 store is located in Blackstone, Nottoway County, Virginia. A plaque on the building reads as follows: "This building originally had a sidewalk entrance to the upstairs. During World War II, when Blackstone was under mandatory rent control, the upstairs was the rent rate office. This is where rental rates were set for housing at that time. It has also been home to Sanitary Barber Shop and Watkins Jewels. The exterior has an historic Mesker Bros. metal facade dating back to the late 1800s."
This Mesker Brothers metal facade is colorful, especially with the use of gold and black in the projecting cornice. Between the end brackets (each with a fleur-de-lis) is a course of sunburst motifs in the cloud-like shapes. Below this is a course of the fleur-de-lis pattern that spans the width of the structure. A series of 8 Corinthian columns, each resting on a base of double rosettes, separate the various units of the 2nd story. At each end is a panel featuring double dolphins. The five windows are separated by the other columns, and above each window is a variation of the sunburst ornament.
Blackstone, a town of about 3,300 people is in economically deprived Southside Virginia; but the town has managed a revitalization program for its business district with many storefronts restored to an original appearance. Nearby Fort Pickett has probably contributed to the town's prosperity. This structure is a contributing building to the Blackstone Historical District, added to the National Register of Historic Places January 25, 1991 with reference number 90002174.

The National Trust has been the caretaker of Ayers House since 1973, after the building was transformed from nurses’ quarters into a public museum, restaurant and function centre.
Ayers House Museum is one of the finest nineteenth century house museums in Australia.
Listed State Heritage Register July 1980.

“Ayers House
The Honourable Sir Henry Ayers KCMG, MR, who was Premier of the colony of South Australia on five occasions between 15th July 1863, and 22nd July 1873, built this residence between 1853 and 1873. Paxton’s cottage, which was originally built on this site is included in the structure.
The property was acquired by the South Australian Government in 1926 and used as nurses’ quarters under the name of Austral House until 1970.
This restored building, with restaurants incorporated, was opened by the Honourable Don Dunstan, Premier of South Australia on the 30th June 1973.”
The oldest part of Ayers House was built by Robert Thornber in 1846. It was bought by William Paxton, a director of the South Australian Mining Association and was extended by the addition of brick side wings by 1852. Henry Ayers, secretary of the association, first leased the house from Paxton and then purchased it in 1871.
During his residence the house was progressively extended from a modest nine-roomed brick dwelling to its present grand form designed by architect George Strickland Kingston, with the addition of an upper storey, coach house and further side wings housing formal entertaining rooms.
Predominantly in bluestone, the house has Kingston’s characteristic arched porches and semi-circular fronts: its western dining room is one of South Australia’s notable interiors.
A small suite of rooms was built below ground to provide a cool retreat during Adelaide’s intense summers.
After Ayers’ death in 1897, the house was only occasionally used by his heirs. In 1972 it became the National Trust of South Australia headquarters for some years with its formal rooms accessible as a museum.
Sir Henry Ayers was Premier, and Cabinet Minister. He was secretary of the Burra Copper Mines, founder of the Bank of Adelaide, trustee of the Savings Bank of South Australia, chairman of South Australian Gas Co, governor of the Botanic Gardens Board and treasurer of the University of Adelaide.
He was knighted in 1872 for his government’s role in bringing the overland telegraph service from Darwin to Adelaide, opening communication with England, a vital link for the fledgling colony.
The house was the centre of Adelaide society for thirty years. Henry famously gave twice yearly parties in September and October with dancing in his ballroom, coloured lighting festooning the trees and wine carefully selected from his cellar.
As President of the Legislative Council, Ayers gave his parliamentary dinners at home, his guests seated around a long cedar table and the Ayers family crest of three doves and an olive branch looking down from the ceiling – it had taken a painter named Williams, flat on his back on a mattress supported by ladders, three days to do.
With the home went City Acres 29 and 30 reaching from Tavistock (now Frome) Street to the boundary of the present East End Market and from North Terrace to Rundle Street.
After Sir Henry’s death the house stood vacant for some years, before it was bought by Austral Gardens Ltd in 1914 turning the grounds into an open-air theatre and for some time was occupied by the Returned Soldiers League. From 1929 it was a nurses’ home and training centre for the Royal Adelaide Hospital until 1969.
On 30 June1973 Ayers House opened with a fine dining restaurant and bistro. Visited by Princess Ann and serving Queen Elizabeth II it quickly became the place to be seen. The full silver service restaurant was regularly visited by Adelaide society until the mid 90s. A magnificent Victorian styled glass conservatory extension, added in the 80s, extended the bistro from the Coach House and Stables into the gardens.
Sir Henry Ayers also owned a grand home on the Esplanade at Glenelg. It was one of two self contained joined residences, each of 15 rooms, known as Seafield Tower. Designed by architect Thomas English, they were built in 1876 as seaside retreats – one for Sir Henry and the other for Sir Thomas Elder. Each residence had a separate entrance.
Of Italianate Style, a common façade has since been added. Built of random coarse bluestone with smoother rendered quoins. Opening are Roman arched with Romanesque pilasters and keystones.

The Funeral – A great Concourse
The remains of the late Sir Henry Ayers GCMG, were interred in the West Terrace Cemetery on Saturday afternoon, and were followed to the grave by a very large number of people, including members of both Houses of the Legislature, heads of Government departments, members of boards and directorates with which the deceased gentleman had been connected, and a number of leading business men. The general public testified their respect to the memory of Sir Henry Ayers by assembling in numbers near his residence on North Terrace, and thence to the corner of Pulteney Street the road was lined with spectators.
The cortege was of great length, over 100 vehicles taking part in the procession. His Excellency the Governor sent his carriage, as did also Lady Milne, while the Right Hon the Chief Justice was represented by Major H B Taylor (associate), who was in his Honour's carriage. Leaving the house shortly after 8 o'clock the route lay along North Terrace, King William Street, and Grote Street to the cemetery.
The flags were half-masted and many places of business were closed during the funeral. At the Adelaide Oval flags were half-masted as Sir Henry was a vice president and trustee of the Cricketing Association.

The remains of the Minister of Highways and Road Development and Chief Government Whip Jeyaraj Fernandopulle was taken to the Parliament complex this morning at 10.30 AM to enable his colleagues to pay their last respects.
Earlier in the day, President Mahinda Rajapakse, paid his last respect to the slain Minister at his Torrington residence and later attended the Parliament ceremony where the mortal remains of Jeyaraj Fernandopulle was kept to enable his parliamentary colleagues to pay their last respect. Yesterday, in his statement President condemned the killing of Jeyaraj Fernandopulle. He said, "I emphatically and unequivocally condemn the cowardly assassination of Mr. Jeyaraj Fernandopulle, Minister of Highways and Road Construction and Chief Government Whip, by the terrorists of the LTTE, earlier today." (06 April).Sri Lanka President being received by Mrs Fernandopulle and children when he arrived at the Torrington residence of Minsiter Jeyaraj Fernandopulle.
He also pointed out, "Minister Jeyaraj Fernandopulle was a popular representative of the people, elected by the voters of Gampaha District at several elections. The assassination of such a committed democrat once again shows the total contempt of the LTTE to the democratic process, and its unquestioned commitment to violence and terror to achieve it narrow and limited objectives, that are far removed from the interests of the Tamil people of Sri Lanka."At the Parliament
He further said, "It is also significant that in carrying this repeated act of terrorist brutality the LTTE has chosen as its target a leader of the Catholic and Christian communities of Sri Lanka, who played an important role in bringing about greater understanding among the different communities of our country."
Thereafter, the cortège was taken to his house in Katana.
Minister Fernandopulle was assassinated in an LTTE bomb explosion yesterday morning.
The funeral will take place on Thursday (April 10) with full state honors.Members of Parliament paying their last respect
Minister Fernandopulle entered the Parliament in 1983 representing Gampaha district. A lawyer by profession, the late Minister was a fluent speaker in Sinhalese, Tamil and English.
During his career, he held many ministerial portfolios including, the Minster of Catholic Affairs, Minister of Ethnic Concession and National Unity, Minister of Port and Aviation, and Minister of Highways and Road Development.
He had also been appointed the UPFA organizer for the Trincomalee District for the forthcoming provincial council elections in the East.

Patricia Bay is a body of salt water that extends East from the Saanich Inlet and forms part of the North Saanich shoreline in British Columbia. The bay was named after Princess Patricia of Connaught, daughter of the Duke of Connaught who was Governor General in 1912. The aeroplane is coming in to land at Victoria International Airport (YYJ).

Here we see a large adult Carrion crow (Corvus corone) , a passerine bird of the family Corvidae and the genus Raven (Higher classification: Corvus), which is native to western Europe and eastern Asia. It can grow to twenty inches in length with a wingspan of up to thirty nine inches. This one keeps the magpie's and Jackdaw's in their place, as top of the food chain, afraid of nothing.They can reach a length of 47cm with a 104cm wingspan and a weight of up to 650g, and in the UK they are in the Green conservation list status with over one million breeding territories.
Regarded as one of the most intelligent birds, indeed creatures on the planet, studies suggest that Corvids cognitive abilities can rival that of primates such as chimpanzees and gorillas and even provide clues to understanding human intelligence. A corvid's pallium is packed with more neurons than a great ape's. Corvids have demonstrated the ability to use a combination of mental tools such as imagination, and anticipation of future events. They can craft tools from twigs and branches to hook grubs from deep recesses, they can solve puzzles and intricate methods of gaining access to food set by humans., and have even bent pieces of wire into hooks to obtain food. They have been proven to have a higher cognitive ability level than seven year old humans.
Pet crows develop a unique call for their owners, in effect actually naming them. They also know to sunbathe for a dose of vitamin D. In groups they warn of danger and communicate vocally. They store a cache of food for later if in abundance and are clever enough to move it if they feel it has been discovered. They leave markers for their cache. They have even learned to place walnuts under car tyres at traffic lights as a means of cracking them!
Crows regularly gather around a dead fellow corvid, almost like a funeral, and it is thought they somehow learn from each death.
They can even remember human faces for decades. Crows group together to attack larger predators and even steal their food, and they have different dialects in different areas, with the ability to mimic the dialect of the alpha males when they enter their territory!
They have a twenty year life span, the oldest on record reaching the age of Fifty nine. Crows can leave gifts for those who feed them such as buttons or bright shiny objects as a thank you, and they even kiss and make up after an argument, having mated for life.
In mythology they are associated with good and bad luck, being the bringers of omens and even witchcraft and are generally reviled for their attacks on baby birds and small mammals, which is simply down to the fact that they are so highly intelligent, and also the top of the food chain. I absolutely love them, they are magnificent, bold, beautiful and incredibly interesting to watch and though at times it is hard to witness attacks made by them, I cannot help but adore them for so many other and more important reasons.

The Delphic theater, in northwest position respect of the temple of Apollo, stands on an area considerably higher than the temple itself. The theatre, in which the theatrical and musical events of Pythian games took place, was built in the 4th century BC. It was remodeled on several occasions, particularly in 160/159 BC at the expenses of king Eumenes II of Pergamon and in 67 AD on the occasion of emperor Nero's visit.
The building develops around the orchestra which, according to the standard, is flat to allow the performances of the members of the chorus. No doubt the orchestra was originally a complete circle, 7 m radius.
The cavea, “koilon”, leans against the natural slope of the mountain. A corridor called diazoma divided horizontally the cavea in two uneven sections: the lower section had 28 tiers of seats, the upper section seven. Six radially arranged staircases divide the cavea in seven cunei for the upper and lower sections. The theatre could accommodate about 4,500 spectators.
On the occasion of Nero's visit to Greece in 67 A.D. various alterations took place. The orchestra was paved and delimited by a parapet made of stone. The proscenium was replaced by a low pedestal, the pulpitum; its façade was decorated with scenes from Hercules' myth in relief, currently in the interior of the museum.
Further repairs and transformations took place in the 2nd century A.D. Pausanias mentions that these were carried out under the auspices of Herod Atticus. The theater was abandoned when the sanctuary declined in Late Antiquity.

Several other locations were inaccessible due to road construction projects. I wound up going to Ludlowville. The falls provided colorful scenery and the Union School here was eerie.

The audience mistook him as a supporter of Mr. Abhisit, since whistle-blowing has been a trademark of the anti-government protesters, and no one restrained him until he held up a sign which read – in English – “Respect My Vote!”.
The heckler then shouted at Mr. Abhisit, “If you cannot even reform yourself, how can you reform the country?”. Mr. Abhisit was visibly surprised by the incident, but the former leader tried to manage the confrontation by thanking the man for his remarks.
However, the heckler went on to shout, “When you were the government, why didn’t you do it? (Start the discussion) about anti-corruption. You have intimidated other people, so can they not intimidate you as well?”
The heckler was later identified to be a 34-year-old Bangkok businessman referred under his Facebook handle “Ake Auttagorn” who told Prachatai that he staged the one-man protest “out of frustration” at the political discourse now and that “Thailand already had this lesson many times before” with the Democrat Party “always at the center of it”.
And this is how Abhisit reacted to the heckler…
“This is an example of reasons why we need reforms,” Mr. Abhisit told the audience, “This is the form of Democrat Party′s rivals”, to which the heckler shot back, “I am not your rival, I am the people!”
Security guards later surrounded the man and led him out of the room. After the heckler had been removed, Mr. Abhisit told the crowd that such harassment is a reason why the upcoming election on 2 February 2014 would not be a fair one."

The Eurasian blackcap usually known simply as the blackcap, is a common and widespread typical warbler. It has mainly olive-grey upperparts and pale grey underparts, and differences between the five subspecies are small. Both sexes have a neat coloured cap to the head, black in the male and reddish-brown in the female. The male's typical song is a rich musical warbling, often ending in a loud high-pitched crescendo, but a simpler song is given in some isolated areas, such as valleys in the Alps

Photograph taken at 10.26am on Wednesday 10th April 2024 at an altitude of Forty nine metres in the Grounds of Warnham Nature Reserve in Horsham, West Sussex.
Here we see a two male and one female Mallard Ducks eating seed from a tree stump. Mallards are dabbling ducks which breed all over temperate and sub tropical Americas, Eurasia and North Africa as well as New zealand and a host of other territories. Belonging to the waterfowl family, the males or drakes are particularly beautiful with glossy green heads and bright yellow beaks.

The Yoder-Walker House in New Castle, Craig County, Virginia, has an enviable view, situated on a hill with the town of New Castle spread out below and an expansive view of Craig Creek Valley. It’s a fascinating Queen Anne, built about 1890 by William Larose Yoder (1830-1900), formerly of Mahanoy City, Pennsylvania, who apparently came to New Castle during the 1890s to participate in the exploitation of the county's mineral reserves. He was also involved in real estate development and speculation. Later it was the residence of Ed Lee Walker, a general merchant and druggist in New Castle in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
With the numerous trees (and taken in bad light), this was a challenging house—unfortunately many details are not visible. The house is a 2-story brick structure (and according to the National Register of Historic Places [NRHP] nomination form, provided by the Virginia Department of Historic Resources [VDHR], double-pile brick, 7 course American bond with black penciling). The foundation is stone but faced with rock. It has a complex hipped roof with brick chimneys and numerous gabled dormers—the dormers sides are decorated with pressed metal sheathing in a floral pattern. The windows are 1/1 sash with segmental arched lintels, stone sills and shutters which are louvered and paneled. At the rear is a 2-story side porch with square balusters, and the upper level shows off the millwork with arched wooden spandrels and spindles. There are bay windows facing the porch and bay windows adjoining the 2-story rear porch. The porch entrance is pedimented decorated with a linear pattern inside a triangle; it’s flanked by two Doric-inspired columns on each side. The porch is a wraparound, the roof supported by a series of columns. The entry has two doors. Above the porch is a small balcony (screened in) with molded and chamfered posts and more pressed metal, this time with a diamond-pattern (a quilted look).
The nomination form also provides some information on interior details. Apparently there are also many stained-glass windows with a variety of shaped, but I didn’t see any. It is part of the New Castle Historic District (the 1993 boundary increase) National Register ID #93000497.

This photograph was taken at an altitude of Nine metres, at 09:24am on Saturday 24th April 2021 off Reculver Lane close to Reculver Country Park beside Reculver Towers and Roman Fort and St Mary's Church in Herne Bay, Kent.
The site of one of the earliest Roman forts defending against Saxon raids on the 'Saxon shore', it later became an Anglo-Saxon monastery with the twin towers being built in the 12th Century. Coastal erosion now see's the shoreline close to the towers.
