Detail: The Main Altar with its golden frontal („Pala d’Oro“) in front of the Gothic Choir and its Madonna Sculpture with radiant corona from the 16th century.
Pala d'Oro
A golden altarpiece, the Pala d'Oro which today forms the Antependium of the high altar was probably created around 1020 in Fulda. It consists of seventeen individual gold panels with reliefs in repoussé. In the centre, Christ is enthroned as Redeemer in a Mandorla, flanked by Mary and the Archangel Michael. Four round medallions with images of the Evangelists' symbols show the connection to the other twelve relief panels with depictions from the life of Jesus Christ. They begin with the entry into Jerusalem and end with the encounter of the women with the risen Christ in front of the open grave on Easter morning. The depictions are read from left to right, like a book.
Stylistically, the Pala d'Oro is not uniform. The first five reliefs probably come from a goldsmith taught in the Rheinland and is distinguished by a strikingly joyful narration. It probably derives from a donation of Emperor Otto III. The other panels, together with the central group of Christ, Mary, and Michael, draws from Byzantine and late Carolingian predecessors and was likely first added under Otto's successor, Henry II, who also donated the Ambo of Henry II.

Aachen, Kaiserdom, Choir Hall and Marienaltar - Cathedral, Gothic choir and Mary's altar
Today's Altar of Mary is the main altar of the cathedral. It consists of the marble slabs of the former Carolingian Marian altar and as an antependium it received the Pala d'oro set in a simple frame. It was probably built around 1020 in Fulda and consists of 17 relief panels made of embossed gold sheet. In the center, Christ is enthroned in the mandola, surrounded by Mary and the Archangel Michael.
In 1978, Aachen Cathedral was the first German monument to be included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The center of the church is the octagonal central building, the octagon, which with its 31 m height was the highest domed structure north of the Alps for around 400 years. The Byzantine palace churches served as a model. Valuable materials such as marble and ancient columns were brought in from Italy for the construction. In 814 Charlemagne was buried in his palatine chapel.

Liberty Enlightening the World (La liberté éclairant le monde), known more commonly as the Statue of Liberty, is a statue given to the United States by France in 1885, standing at Liberty Island in the mouth of the Hudson River in New York Harbor as a welcome to all visitors, immigrants, and returning Americans. The copper statue, dedicated on October 28, 1886, commemorates the centennial of the United States and is a gesture of friendship between the two nations. The sculptor was Frederic Auguste Bartholdi. Alexandre Gustave Eiffel, the designer of the Eiffel Tower, engineered the internal structure. Eugène Viollet-le-Duc was responsible for the choice of copper in the statue's construction and adoption of the Repoussé technique. The Statue of Liberty is one of the most recognizable icons of the U.S. worldwide,[1] and, in a more general sense, represents liberty and escape from oppression. The Statue of Liberty was, from 1886 until the Jet age, often the first glimpse of the United States for millions of immigrants after ocean voyages from Europe. In terms of visual impact, the Statue of Liberty appears to draw inspiration from il Sancarlone or the Colossus of Rhodes.

Liberty holds a torch in her right hand and a tablet in her left. The tablet shows the inscription JULY IV MDCCLXXVI—July 4, 1776, the date of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence.
One of her feet stands on chains, symbolizing the acquired freedom. The USA states that the seven spikes in the crown represent the seven seas and seven continents.
The height from ground to the top of the torch is 305 feet (93 m); this includes the foundation and the pedestal. The height of the statue itself, from the top of the base to the torch, is 151 feet (46 m). The statue weighs 204 tons and the pedestal weighs 24,500 tons.

I teach art literacy at my son's school. One month of art lit each year is dedicated to creating a class auction project. I planned and executed the project. Each student made a tile, and every tile is a different plant of the northwest. This was a very time consuming project on my end, as I had to build the mirror from scratch, antique the tiles, attach them, and do the finish work. I estimate that I put in 60 hours of labor. 24 kids spent an hour making their tiles. The mirror contains approximately $100 worth in materials, and brought in $1100 at our school auction.
After these two pictures, I thought a "haircut" was really necessary, even if I decided let his hair on the body grow (so far I trimmed him at each regrowth). So last night Rambo was groomed, most of his red hair has gone now, I'll do another photo soon of the "neat" guy.

The 'Crown of the Andes' is considered one of the most important surviving examples of goldsmith work from colonial Spanish America..."
The "Crown of the Andes" was made to adorn a sacred image the Virgin of the Immaculate Conception venerated in Popayán cathedral, in the former Spanish viceroyalty of New Granada (now Colombia). An attribute of Mary's divine queenship, the gold crown is encircled by scrolls of acanthus leaves set with emeralds in blossom-shaped clusters that symbolize the Virgin's purity. The diadem, made in the mid-seventeenth century, is surmounted by four imperial arches made a little more than a century later. Pear-shaped emerald pendants are suspended beneath them and they are topped by a cross-bearing orb that signifies Christ's dominion over the world. The crown is encrusted with nearly 450 emeralds, the largest one being a twenty-four-carat gemstone known as the "Atahualpa emerald."
Although the practice was controversial, it was common throughout the Catholic world to bestow lavish gifts, including jewels and sumptuous garments, on sculptures of the Virgin Mary. Such gifts, which exalted the Virgin and increased the splendor of her worship, were frequently offered by devotees who sought her intercession or wished to give thanks for it. In Popayán, the cult of the Virgin of the Immaculate Conception was promoted by a confraternity of believers who oversaw the care and ritual presentation of her image, which was crowned and carried in public procession on certain Marian feast days. The treasury safeguarded by the confraternity included not only this magnificent gold and emerald crown, but also a simpler gilt silver one, as well as jeweled rings, bracelets, earrings, silver chains, and strands of pearls.
The "Crown of the Andes" is considered one of the most important surviving examples of goldsmith work from colonial Spanish America. Notable for its rarity, richness, and exquisite craftsmanship, the crown represents the most distinctive artistic achievement of a locale whose wealth derived from the mining of gold and emeralds.

This stunning Art Deco signed Czech necklace dates from the 1920-1935 period. The luxurious molded and hand carved Sapphire blue glass borders on cobalt coloration. The blue glass strand features unusual octagonal beads that are faceted on both sides.
The magnificent pendant features a large faceted glass oval set in a hand made deep dog tooth bezel. The ornate filigree pendant is two pieces : an oval frame with repousse leaves and on top, a filigree medallion of scrolls and beads. Small bezel set sapphire chatons adorn the top and bottom as well.
The pendant is tested 835 silver over brass. The silver retains the old patina and has some very minor spots of wear. The necklace chain has faceted rounds with the octagonal glass beads and all are connected with brass chain. The necklace has the original brass spring clasp and jump ring and the spring clasp is signed Czechoslovakia.
The chain section is 18" long and the pendant is 2" long x 1 1/4" wide. The large oval sapphire glass stone is 1 1/8" long x 3/4" wide. The octagonal glass beads are 1/2" wide. This necklace is in exceptional condition. The large blue glass stone is perfect, and the pendant is dirt and damage free.
All of the glass beads on the chain are in excellent condition as well with the exception of a couple of the smaller beads, near the clasp, that have some minor flea bites, I think. The glass beads were hand cut and are not perfectly symmetrical and the flea bites I refer to could be imperfections when the beads were cut.

A very rare 'Del Fuego' silver double-headed eagle altar card
Estimate: PHP 150,000 - 200,000
18th century
Manila
Silver, parcel gilt, repousséd, chased, engraved and mounted on a narra stand
31. 5 x 27 cm (12 x 11 in)
Made from sheet silver set on its original narra wood backing, the altar card was partially gilt using the ancient Del Fuego fire gilding method, and is a shining example of Philippine mastery of silversmithing of the 18th century. All aspects from the repoussé work and modeling of the eagles heads and crown to the chasing and engraving are executed with an exceptional quality of craftsmanship.
Altar cards were visual prompts or aids for the priest celebrant, during traditional Latin mass. One of a set of three, the card has the Latin verses of the Last Gospel (John 1:1-14) engraved in an oval cartouche held up by the intricately chased and engraved crowned double-headed Habsburg eagle representing the union of the Austrian and Spanish Habsburg thrones, the Habsburg also being patrons of the Augustinians.

200 to 300 demonstrators gathered in front of the headquarters of French company Total in La Défense on March 8, 2010, while a meeting was taking place to decide the future of the Flandres refining plant. The company's decision to close down the site and install, in partnership with EDF, a methane terminal, didn't satisfy the employees nor the unions, who discard the move. Very angry, some protestors managed to break inside the building, smashing the windows, before being pushed back by the riot police with tear gas and sticks.
