Located in Portland, Oregon, Portlandia is the second-largest copper repoussé statue in the U.S., second only to the Statue of Liberty.
I took this photo as something of an assignment. The idea was to have a shot of Portlandia from straight on, but the background needed to not be too busy. I did significant work with the background to quiet it down by reducing the contrast, dropping the exposure level, reducing the highlights and reducing the clarity and sharpness. This let Portlandia pop while keeping the architectural details of the building beyond intact but subdued.

On this side, the artisans at Tiffany and Co. skillfully rendered portraits of the private train car Ellsmere's parlor, and the train cars Venice and Mansfield in repoussé.
One of our train volunteers shared a photo from his private collection of the Ellsmere's parlor, and the two images match almost perfectly!
I've been holding this for a while now, but I finally decided to post it. I am quite happy with the outcome. At the beginning this meant to be a party flyer/poster entitled "Black and Pink", and over the creative process it turned more into a personal project/work. The client wasn't satisfied with this piece, so I had to make another one.

The text is William Butler Yeats' politically charged poem, The Second Coming. I used Photoshop to create a continuous digital montage of mixed media collages that I've created over the past 4 years and printed them on Arches watercolor paper. I used various paints and pastels to enhance the printed images and lettered the poem with Japanese text inks over the top. The calligraphic hand for much of the poem is Carolingian. The hand for both the Eastern repousse letters on the cover, as well as key words of the poem, is a cursive-like Carolinian variation designed by Reggie Ezell.

The 'Crown of the Andes' is considered one of the most important surviving examples of goldsmith work from colonial Spanish America..."
The "Crown of the Andes" was made to adorn a sacred image the Virgin of the Immaculate Conception venerated in Popayán cathedral, in the former Spanish viceroyalty of New Granada (now Colombia). An attribute of Mary's divine queenship, the gold crown is encircled by scrolls of acanthus leaves set with emeralds in blossom-shaped clusters that symbolize the Virgin's purity. The diadem, made in the mid-seventeenth century, is surmounted by four imperial arches made a little more than a century later. Pear-shaped emerald pendants are suspended beneath them and they are topped by a cross-bearing orb that signifies Christ's dominion over the world. The crown is encrusted with nearly 450 emeralds, the largest one being a twenty-four-carat gemstone known as the "Atahualpa emerald."
Although the practice was controversial, it was common throughout the Catholic world to bestow lavish gifts, including jewels and sumptuous garments, on sculptures of the Virgin Mary. Such gifts, which exalted the Virgin and increased the splendor of her worship, were frequently offered by devotees who sought her intercession or wished to give thanks for it. In Popayán, the cult of the Virgin of the Immaculate Conception was promoted by a confraternity of believers who oversaw the care and ritual presentation of her image, which was crowned and carried in public procession on certain Marian feast days. The treasury safeguarded by the confraternity included not only this magnificent gold and emerald crown, but also a simpler gilt silver one, as well as jeweled rings, bracelets, earrings, silver chains, and strands of pearls.
The "Crown of the Andes" is considered one of the most important surviving examples of goldsmith work from colonial Spanish America. Notable for its rarity, richness, and exquisite craftsmanship, the crown represents the most distinctive artistic achievement of a locale whose wealth derived from the mining of gold and emeralds.
Description:
Using the repoussé technique, artist Robert Lobe has recreated a tree that was torn out of the ground during Superstorm Sandy. Lobe hammered aluminum around the felled tree and corresponding bolder to replicate their shattered forms. Though the original tree was located in along the Appalachian Trail in Northwest New Jersey at Harmony Ridge Farm and Campground, this sculpture also acts as a temporary memorial to and reminder of the storm’s devastation in downtown Manhattan, the artist’s home.
This majestic sculpture embodies the current conversations around climate change and global warming. Though the crippled tree is ominous and threatening, Lobe has also captured the beauty of the original tree and its surrounding environment.
Raven
Myōchin Munesuke (Japanese, Edo period, 1688–1735)
Date:
early 18th century
Culture:
Japanese
This raven was fashioned by hammering and embossing steel––a most intractable medium––into a being of remarkable vitality. Though motionless, the bird is caught in a lifelike pose and full of expression. The conspicuously large size and shape of the beak distinguishes it from a crow. It was designed as an okimono, or ornament for display in the ceremonial alcove (tokonoma) of a Japanese reception room. Because of its large size and fine quality, we may imagine this work was commissioned for a wealthy daimyo patron.
The work is signed "Myōchin Shikibu Ki no Munesuke" on the underside of the body. This refers to the twenty-second master metalsmith to use this name (beginning in the twelfth century), who was active in Edo (present day Tokyo) in the early eighteenth century. This Munesuke, a noted maker of ornate helmets and armor, was known as one of the greatest masters of metal repoussé (hammered shapes). While the majority of works signed Munesuke created over the centuries are not accepted as genuine, Bashford Dean, the founder of the Metropolitan’s Department of Arms and Armor, after careful comparative research, wrote in 1918 that this work represents the finest quality repoussé metalwork of the early eighteenth century.
The work was once a prized possession of Edouard Mène, a noted French collector of Japanese ironwork, and in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries was put on display at the museums Guimet and Cernuschi and elsewhere in Paris.
Liberty Enlightening the World (French: La liberté éclairant le monde), known more commonly as the Statue of Liberty (Statue de la Liberté), was presented to the United States by the people of France in 1886. It stands at Liberty Island (part of New York but physically on the New Jersey side of the New York Harbor) as a welcome to all visitors, immigrants, and returning Americans. The copper patina-clad statue, dedicated on October 28, 1886, commemorates the centennial of the United States and is a gesture of friendship from France to the U.S. Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi sculpted the statue and obtained a U.S. patent useful for raising construction funds through the sale of miniatures. Alexandre Gustave Eiffel (designer of the Eiffel Tower) engineered the internal structure. Eugène Viollet-le-Duc was responsible for the choice of copper in the statue's construction and adoption of the repoussé technique.
The statue is of a robed woman holding a lit flame, and is made of a sheeting of pure copper, hung on a framework of steel (originally puddled iron) with the exception of the flame of the torch, which is coated in gold leaf (originally made of stained glass and lit from the inside.) It stands atop a rectangular stonework pedestal with a foundation in the shape of an irregular eleven-pointed star. The statue is 151 ft (46 m) tall, but with the pedestal and foundation, it is 305 ft (93 m) tall.
Worldwide, the Statue of Liberty is one of the most recognizable icons of the United States, and, more generally, represents liberty and escape from oppression. The Statue of Liberty was, from 1886 until the jet age, often one of the first glimpses of the United States for millions of immigrants after ocean voyages from Europe. Visually, the Statue of Liberty appears to draw inspiration from il Sancarlone or the Colossus of Rhodes.
The statue is a central part of Statue of Liberty National Monument, administered by the National Park Service.
This listing is for a beautiful French or British silver plate vase with high relief repousse design. The design features clusters of grapes, vines and leafs.
Quite stunning, would look really striking as a centerpiece during the holidays or at a wedding.
The vase is silver plate and has a bit of wear and some scratches. This vase has a good weight to it, not easily knocked over.
Measures: 13 ½” high by 5” across the top and 5” across the base
