Anche la loro è una gara, spesso una prova di resistenza per ore a 40 gradi.
Le loro gare le vincono o le perdono senza che nessuno se ne accorga e senza medaglie.

Franco Pagetti è ancora a Bagdad che fotografa per Time. Dovrebbe tornare a marzo per allestire nella chiesa museo di Montefalco una mostra fotografica sulle atrocità delle guerre. I suoi occhi hanno visto troppo sangue e le sue nikon hanno fotografato lo strazio dei conflitti modiali più recenti, dall'Afaganistan ai Balcani, dalla Cecenia all'Irak. Dice che si vuole stabilire in Umbria per godersi un pò di pace, ma non credo lo farà mai, il suo posto è dovunque vi sia una trincea.

Metà del talento di ogni fotogiornalista è l’istinto- come riconoscere una storia prima che si imponga con violenza all’orizzonte. Nel gennaio 2003, tre mesi prima che la coalizione anglo americana lanciasse il suo “scioccante e temibile” bombardamento su Baghdad, Franco Pagetti seguiva l’intuizione che, nonostante le false proteste di Bush e Blair, la guerra in Iraq era inevitabile. Aveva ragione. Diversamente da molti fotogiornalisti che si accalcavano in Kuwait per lavorare a stretto contatto con le truppe, Franco si è immediatamente diretto a Baghdad.
Per Franco, la storia ha sempre ruotato intorno agli iracheni, non alla macchina da guerra americana che ribolliva con agitazione tra le sabbie dell’antica Babilonia, che ha ipnotizzato molti altri fotografi. Franco era con gli iracheni quando la bombe caddero su Baghdad, quando le truppe americane irruppero e la statua di Saddam fu abbattuta e cominciò il saccheggio. “LE cose capitano”, spiegò il Segretario della Difesa americana Donald Rumsfeld “ La libertà è disorganizzata”.
Nei primi giorni, dopo la caduta di Saddam, era possibile per un giornalista vagare per le strade di Baghdad e nelle province con un certo grado di sicurezza. Franco ha documentato le stupefatte e surreali vite degli iracheni, liberati dopo 30 anni di tirannia, che ora tentavano di trovare la loro strada in un caos crescente, quello che Rumsfeld definisce “libertà disorganizzata”.
Dopo che la coalizione Americana fece il colossale errore di creare una frattura tra l’esercito iracheno e il vecchio partito Baathist di Saddam, l’insurrezione iniziò nell’autunno del 2003 costituita, in larga parte, da ex soldati e fautori della Jihad contro gli invasori “Crociati”. All’inizio, gli americani e i loro alleati erano l’unico bersaglio, e la macchina fotografica di Franco ha colto l’orrore delle prime bombe ai lati della strada, le imboscate alle pattuglie americane non appena penetravano nei villaggi impolverati e nelle piantagioni di palme.
La prima volta a Falluja (aprile 2004) ci è andato con i ribelli, embed con la guerriglia e questo non gli ha riscosso molte simpatie.
Dalla metà del 2004, la vita del fotogiornalista in Iraq è diventata impossibile. Quando l’insurrezione è dilagata, i giornalisti stranieri e i loro colleghi iracheni sono anch’essi divenuti bersaglio dei rapitori e degli assassini anti occidentali. Se ne è andata la libertà di vagabondare in Iraq, di penetrare nelle vite degli iracheni. Molti fotogiornalisti hanno abbandonato. Per nessuna foto, dissero, vale la pena morire. Ma Franco e un ristretto numero di “pazzi” sono rimasti indietro e hanno trovato metodi ingegnosi di lavorare. Hanno viaggiato in auto malridotte che non avrebbero attirato l’attenzione; hanno scattato rapidamente prima che una folla infuriata si riunisse e informasse qualche jihadi della presenza di uno straniero; e si sono affidati al sesto senso dei loro amici iracheni. Franco è diventato un esperto della segretezza, con i riflessi di un cacciatore, sapendo di poter fare uno scatto, forse due o tre, al suo soggetto prima che la situazione diventasse troppo pericolosa.
Alla sede del Time a Baghdad, Franco spesso misurava la stanza come una tigre in gabbia, maledicendo in italiano, inglese e arabo, chiedendo di poter fotografare gli attacchi suicida che dall’inizio del 2005 sono diventati un appuntamento giornaliero. Una volta, insistette di poter lasciare l’area protetta del Time per fare alcune fotografie di un attentato ad un cafè frequentato dalla polizia. Un poliziotto furioso colpì Franco sulla tempia con una pistola, ma Franco continuò a scattare finchè potè.
Intrappolato nella sede del Time dal coprifuoco serale, l’unica distrazione per Franco era cucinare per i i suoi colleghi prodigandosi in banchetti italiani con un assortimento di formaggi, guanciale e vino Sagrantino del suo amico Marco Caprai che gli era stato spedito con espedienti tipicamente italiani di nascosto in Iraq come vitale “equipaggiamento fotografico”. Ogni notte divenne una specie di rituale: i suoi invitati avrebbero chiesto, “Dicci ancora, Franco, perché hai lasciato una carriera nella fotografia di moda, circondato da donne affascinanti, per questo angolo di inferno?” Come risposta, Franco avrebbe offerto uno scherzo, un insulto , quasi sempre grugnendo o detto, con un’alzata di spalle, “Annoiano tutte quelle bellissime donne”.
La verità era effettivamente molto semplice: Franco vedeva come un suo dovere quello di riportare l’anarchia che stava dilagando nella società irachena, dalla caduta di Saddam al conflitto sciita- sunnita. I molti ostacoli al fotogiornalismo in Iraq lo hanno semplicemente reso più creativo. Alice Gabriner, photo editor del Time magazine, dice: “ La cosa di maggior ispirazione in Franco è la sua determinazione. Non molla mai e cerca sempre di fare meglio. Si è impegnato in questa vicenda come un testimone della storia. Ha sviluppato uno stile visivo distintivo che gli è proprio e che lo differenzia dagli altri fotogiornalisti che seguono questo conflitto.”
E’ stata una foto di Franco scattata a una fragile bambina di otto anni dagli occhi a luna, sopravvissuta al massacro dei marines americani, che ha aiutato a raggiungere un così internazionale scalpore, spingendo alla fine i soldati americani a far chiarezza sulle uccisioni di Haditha del novembre 2005.
Non sembra possibile che il lavoro del fotogiornalista possa avere ancora più difficoltà. Ma le ha. I rivoluzionari non colpiscono più solo gli stranieri, ma anche gli stessi iracheni. Franco era là ai primi segnali della guerra civile, verso la metà del 2005. La morte di drappelli sciiti avrebbe portato alla morte di persone innocenti- un giocatore di calcio o un barbiere – in un quartiere sunnita ed entro pochi giorni i sunniti avrebbero fatto rappresaglie. La spirale di vendetta, sia tribale che religiosa, sta lacerando l’Iraq, e gli americani, che hanno aperto questo vaso di Pandora, sembrano non aiutare la fine di questo spargimento di sangue.
Documentare questa guerra civile è la sfida attuale di Franco. Ma poiché il conflitto sunniti-sciita si sta espandendo, l’unica possibilità per Franco di muoversi nel paese, fotografando la situazione degli iracheni, è di essere accompagnato dalle truppe americane. “E’ tragico,” dice, “ma questo è l’unico modo che ho per fare fotografie ai comuni iracheni e alla loro sofferenza” ,
E anche li è come il cacciatore che si adegua al territorio per stanare la sua preda, Franco si adegua ma solo perchè deve continuamente scattare,forse il suo lavoro è la sua vita ma sicuramente la sua vita è una missione.

ONE DAY IN THE LAND OF BOZ

Longtime photographer Mark Bozman was a true craftsman and took great pride in every frame of video he shot. He also took rookie photos and reporters like me under his wing and taught us not only how to report but how to relate with real people of the street. Boz had contempt for officials saying they polluted his stories. He always let the action and the people carry his stories, it was a concept not taught in journalism school, in the mid 80's and Bozman was ahead of the time.
Back in the spring of 1988 Mark and I were dispatched to the Idaho State Pen on cold, Sunday night. We'd already done the day-shift and neither thrilled to be going back to work. But, we were the first on the scene of a prison riot and at the gate Boz miraculously talked our way into the minimum security yard to shoot the burning buildings in the neighboring medium yard. We were in the old livevan and assigned to put together a package and liveshot for 10pm. Boz shot killer vid of the SERT team storming the burning buildings when a guard came up and told we were in full lock-down mode and forbidden from leaving the yard until further notice. That meant that we would have to send our video back via microwave, worse yet we were on our own.For the next 9 hours we were imprisoned in the yard with immates, as the guards were tending to the riot going on 30 yards away.
At first I was terrified and Boz could sense it...but there he stood against the razor wire with a smirky smile on his face. He loved the drama of the moment, the fire trucks, the guards with guns, the smoke and choas. He got on the radio and let the newsroom know in so many words that we were in perilous danger but had it under control. Then to me, with a half way grin he said 'see the guys in the towers? Anyone makes a move at us and theyre dead." It was true, there were meanacing snipers not more than 5o yards away, with M-16s locked and loaded. Despite that, a few inmates cautiously came to us bringing water and niffty denim inmate jackets they also brought stories from the inside. Boz ate it up and within minutes we were inmate brothers. In confidence they told us the riot was a cover for a retailitory murder in the cellblock. We had the inside information because of Boz's ability to relate and gain confidence of people, he put people at ease and trusted him. Because we were confident and cool and because of Bozman's swagger, no one gave us a bad time we were one of them.
It was dark and cold in the yard, some inmates brought us blankets while firecrews continued to fight the fire in the cellblock In all the confusion guards were chasing inmates down, cuffing then moving them to other cellblocks. All the while more firetrucks were arriving, along with police reenforcements.
We were starving and Boz called back to the station and had anchorman Steve Otteson order us 5 pizzas from Pizza Hut for delivery to the front gate. Boz had a big smile on his face knowing the pizzas would piss the guards off and 45 minutes later a deputy warden and two guards showed up with our pizza, they were highly irritated and started in on a lecture. Boz wrote a check and told them if they had concerns to take it up with the warden. As it turned out Boz and the Warden were friends from the Claude Dallas escape and Boz said he owed us one.
Pizza never tasted better, maybe it was the backdrop or the drama, but we each had a half a pizza all the pop we could drink; we gave 4 pizzas to appreciative inmates in the yard...none of which had anything to eat since noon. As they ate they told us about the guy who had been hit in the other cellblock, about the guy named Shorty who did the stabbing and why he did it. None of the investigators had this info...this was all Boz inside info and this was just one of many days that ole Boz turned a shitty situation to one of the most fun, interesting nights in broadcast news.
At 10 pm we led the cast with the only vids behind the wire, with the names of the victim and the suspect. We were breathing rarified air that night, so giddy and high with our scoop and we were looking smart in our prison jackets.
The competition finally showed up, but had just 30 seconds of video about the 'disturbance'. Boz and I bragged about our time in prison; we finally were escorted out the gates at 3-am emerging the next morning at work as heros of the newsroom; all of which was forgotten in 48 hours. As Boz said you can hit it out of the park one day and on the other end of the bat the next.
