A two-year-old girl was airlifted to Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge after the car she was in was hit by an outbound Metra train in Elgin about 10 p.m. Saturday, according to authorities.
The car she was in was driven by her father, who police believe was intoxicated. The child's five-year-old brother and pregnant mother were also in the car, though the toddler's injuries were the most serious, Elgin Police Commander Glenn Theriault said.
Police are also investigating whether the rain played a role in the accident, Theriault said.
The grade-level incident happened at Ramond Street, south and east of the National Street station. The train demolished the front of the car, authorities said.
"The motor was on the roadway, the transmission and parts were all over the place," said Elgin Fire Department Battalion Chief Bryan McMahan said. "All four were out of the vehicle, waiting in a passerby's vehicle."
A second car coming the opposite way ran into the first car that was damaged, McMahan said. It's unclear whether the car tried to skirt the train gates or whether they were malfunctioning.
Train 2721, which hit the car, was delayed by about 90 minutes because of the accident, Metra Spokesman Tom Miller said. Inbound train 2724 from Elgin toward Chicago was cancelled because of the accident, according to the agency.

I really shouldn't think "Family Guy". She's reporting on London's Chinese New Year festivities in Trafalgar Square.
In front of the Kadhimain Tomb / Mosque in Baghdad. I was told that, since Saddam's removal from power, the borders and thus sacred shrines of Iraq had been re-opened to visitors and the devout from Iran, banned for years from visiting sites they held holy, such as this one.
In this photo I'm actually speaking with a western woman dressed in a traditional outfit. Lois Raimondo is a photojournalist and was on assignment in Iraq for the Smithsonian Magazine, preparing a feature story: Baghdad Beyond the Headlines.
This photo was taken by the Japanese traveller I befriended in Jordan and visited Iraq with. He later emailed me the file.
