‘Illiam Kodhere’s Will: A Manx Play’ by Christopher Shimmin. First performed by the Peel Players at the Gaiety Theatre, Douglas, 13 January 1913 (with Shimmin himself in the part of Dan Quilliam). It was published in 1913 for Yn Cheshaght Gailckagh by W. K. Palmer of Peel.
The plot (set in Dalby) is easily summarised:
lliam Kodhere repents for his grasping life and so writes a will that leaves his farm and livestock to his illegitimate son, Dan. Kodhere’s wife hears of this and tries to hide the will, but it is discovered by Dan’s sweetheart, which enables them to get married and live happily.
However, this is perhaps misleading as to the feel of the play, which spends a great deal of time on place, character and mood: the business of Kodhere’s writing his will is done within the first 14 pages; then follows 16 pages mostly of an evening’s conversation, story-telling and singing around the fireplace; then there are the final 11 pages where Kodhere’s wife makes her first appearance, the will is hidden and found, and the happy ending achieved.
This unusual weighting of the narrative makes it clear that a major point of the play was to put Manx culture and way of life on stage, which is an amazing thing to attempt. Understanding this makes this play especially interesting. It also gives a good idea of the sort of environment of the Manx Cultural Revival that this play was created in, under the instigation of Sophia Morrison’s Peel Players.
It should also be mentioned that Shimmin is a masterful playwright whose touch at times is staggering. He is also capable of some wonderfully strong lines, as for example in Nora’s taste in Manx folk tunes (as opposed to the works of the likes of Haydn Wood) in Act II Scene 1:
“I like the songs that sailors make better than those they sing at concerts about “The Rolling Sea.” There’s something strong, and fresh, and free in the real sea songs. You cannot buy the music or the words in the shops, either. The songs make you feel the surge of the sea, and the heaving of the waves. They remind you of the sea breezes, and the gulls; and they make you feel that life in the open air is a beautiful thing.”
Another interesting point to note is the character Chalse, described in the stage directions as “an old wandering beggarman [...] - a mystic storyteller.” This is almost certainly the same character met in person by T. E. Brown who immortalised Chalse in his poem, ‘Chalse a Killey’, written in around 1875. T.E. Brown’s Chalse died in around 1870, the year in which Shimmin was born. (Hall Caine also apparently met Chalse in his youth, and he featured him in both his memoirs and in ‘The Master of Man’).
Chalse has some of the most moving lines of the play, and his description of his experience of the Lhiannan Shee is incredibly beautiful. Worth quoting are his lines from Act II, Scene 1: “Life is more beautiful than most people know, and the loveliest things are for nothing. Money won’t buy you the best things.” And also, from the same scene, “I’ve been seeing and hearing strange things all my life. Life is very strange, and very wonderful.”

No church can save you, your good deeds will not save you, Mary interceding for your sins will not save you...for she cannot hear you.
You must put your faith and trust in Jesus Christ alone for salvation.

I can't help but notice how the guy on the right is holding his empty Coke bottle. Once you see it, you really can't un-see it.
De repente,
cuando despierto en la mañana
me acuerdo de mí,
con sigilo abro los ojos
y procedo a vestirme.
Lo primero es colocarme mi gesto
de persona decente.
En seguida me pongo las buenas
Costumbres, el amor
filial, el decoro, la moral,
la fidelidad conyugal:
para el final dejo los recuerdos.
Lavo con primor
mi cara de buena ciudadana
visto mi tan deteriorada esperanza,
me meto entre la boca las palabras,
cepillo la bondad
y me la pongo de sombrero
y en los ojos
esta mirada tan amable.
Entre el armario selecciono las ideas
que hoy quiero lucir
y sin perder más tiempo
me las meto en la cabeza.
Finalmente
me calzo los zapatos
y echo a andar: entre paso y paso
tarareo esta canción que le canto
a mi hija:
“Si a tu ventana llega
el siglo veinte
trátalo con cariño
que es mi persona”
At one of the town hall meetings being held by Pete Stark about Obama's Health Care Reform bill. I didn't get into the actual meeting due to the numbers of people there, but I took photos of the crowd gathered outside.
I wore my camera and took pictures and talked to both sides. Most people were civil, but there was a marked difference between the people against health care reform and those in favor; those in favor were generally quiet and well behaved, and those opposed were louder and much more vocal, some actively abusive to others.
Those who got into the actual meeting had very mixed feelings; those opposed came out frustrated and felt that Stark's people stifled them, telling them to sit down and be quiet and let people take turns speaking. Those in favor were saying that the opposition people had gotten there early in order to dominate those present; they were larger in numbers, they got more opportunity to speak, they were louder and much more vehement, and those in favor of reform came out of the meeting with a sense of frustration and lost hope.
"Make me good God, but not yet".....
---Nurse Jackie's prayer
Original quote attributed to St. Augustine (pre-conversion): "Lord, make me patient - right now. And Lord, make me chaste - but not tonight."
Many professing Christians believe they are safely on their way to heaven because they have prayed a prayer, been baptized, joined a church, built friendships at church, learned the “church-talk,” or enjoyed church fellowship activities. However, Jesus Christ Himself said that many would be shocked and horrified on the Day of Judgment when they are told, “I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity” (Matthew 7.21-23). They said they followed the Lord, but they were just pretending!
And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say? [Luke 6.46]
Jesus said that “by their fruits ye shall know them” (Matthew 7.16-20). A true follower of Christ, a Christian, will have a life that bears visible evidence that Jesus is truly his Lord.
Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words… [John 14.23]
But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life. [Romans 6.22]
The Bible states clearly and repeatedly that salvation from sin and sin’s penalty (suffering the wrath of God in hell) is graciously given to those who have repented (turned from sin and self) and placed their complete faith and trust in the Lord Jesus Christ (turning to Christ, to trust and follow Him). That conversion from sin and self, to the Lord will bear genuine, lasting, and visible fruit:
Fruit of Repentance: Turning from sin (Mat 3.8; 2Tim 2.19)
Fruit of Knowledge: A desire to learn Scripture (2Tim 3.15-4.5)
Fruit of Good Works: Obedience to Scripture (John 14.15, 21, 23; Col 1.10)
Fruit of Holiness: Growing in Christ-likeness (Rom 6.22; Gal 5.22-24)
Fruit of Evangelism: An urgency to see others saved (Rom 10.13-17; 2Cor 5.15-20)
The good news of the Gospel is that, even though God is angry with the wicked every day because of their sins against Him (Psalm 7.11), He does not want any to perish and suffer His righteous and just wrath in Hell (2Peter 3.9). God wants all sinners to be saved, and to this end Jesus Christ suffered and died on the cross for all, and then rose from the dead defeating death and proving He is God. But Jesus said, “Except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish” (Luke 13.3). You must turn from sin and self! And you must turn to the Lord Jesus Christ in faith and trust, because there is no salvation outside of Him (Acts 4.12; 16.30-31)!
Nothing is more important than your eternal destiny. Please examine yourself to see if you are in the faith (2Corinthians 13.5), or if you, like so many others, are just pretending.
Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves. Know ye not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates? [2Corinthians 13.5]
Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it. [Matthew 7.13-14]
I am not the only one watching. Some kids in puffa jackets hang around, grinning. At the preacher? At the yuppies? At Lady Vervaine? I'm not quite sure. "Repent and be saved by Jesus Christ," the preacher tells me, as I go down on my knees before him, hoping to find my own kind of salvation through the lens.

Visando e democratização do acesso a cultura popular o festival teve acesso gratuito e irrestrito.

Day 247 - I was at Repent Bar tonight shooting some heavy metal bands from the DC area - Admiral Browning and Ol Scratch. This was between sets at the bar... had to sit the camera down and grab a cold one.
y me encuentro
demasiado humana
amordazada
vencida y convencida
demasiado mortal.
Basta levantar los talones y respirar profundo
Basta, pues, empezar

San Francisco. He was out by the Powell Street cable car turntable with this sign most days for over 20 years. Haven't seen him for some time though. Tough sell ....
I like the Repent sign it looks like a political add. This sign is in the parking lot of a strip club.
