4me4you recently had the pleasure of visiting Pontone Gallery, where the renowned Scottish artist Iain Faulkner presented his latest exhibition, “A Man Alone…”.
Known internationally for his evocative and introspective works, Faulkner's art invites viewers into the private world of solitude, reflection, and quiet beauty.
A graduate of the Glasgow School of Art, Faulkner has spent years developing a distinctive style that merges traditional realism with a contemporary sensibility. His paintings capture moments of stillness and introspection, where the presence of solitary figures in expansive landscapes creates a poignant sense of quiet resilience.
In this latest series, Faulkner transports the viewer to the serene shores of Alpine Italy, where the idyllic vistas of Lake Como and Lago di Braies form the backdrop for his solitary figures. These peaceful, almost mystical settings invite deep reflection, mirroring the emotional landscapes of the figures within them. The artist’s work is not merely about isolation, but about the profound beauty and peace found in moments of solitude.
What sets Faulkner's work apart is the recurring figure that inhabits his paintings: himself. However, these are not traditional self-portraits. Far from the ego-driven portrayals often seen in art, Faulkner’s self-representation is humble and restrained. Dressed in a simple, unassuming white shirt, black trousers, braces, and sturdy shoes, the artist offers himself as an ‘everyman’, a figure that is relatable and grounded. Notably, Faulkner chooses not to reveal his face, leaving his identity to be inferred by his presence alone. This absence invites the viewer to step into his place, to become part of the scene and share in the experience of quiet reflection and awe.
Through these understated yet powerful works, Faulkner encourages us to pause, to stand alongside him, and to see the world through his eyes. By eschewing self-aggrandisement and choosing a plain, unremarkable appearance, Faulkner invites us to appreciate the world’s beauty not through a lens of distinction, but through the simplicity of shared wonder. His paintings become a quiet call to slow down and experience life’s profound beauty in a way that is intimate, humble, and deeply personal.

From a young age we are taught to relate the camera to smiling; as babies our spontaneous smiles provoke our parents to photograph us, or if they decide to take our picture they will do all they can to make us smile. As we grow up and ergo begin to make sense of the phrase "say cheese", smiling in front of the camera becomes a convention. In the realms of domestic and social photography, serious expressions are scarce. However, this rule is reversed if we are to consider portraiture practiced within an artistic context, as opposed to a social, domestic or commercial one; portraits which are made to be taken seriously depict people looking serious. Because fine art photography is the field I practice in, I chose to contradict this concept by photographing my subjects in a professional environment (the studio) using professional equipment (large format film) and asking them to smile in way that appears awkward and unnatural, as though they feel it to be wrong to smile within an artistic context.

A CEO’S JOURNEY: FROM SELF-DISCOVERY TO DISRUPTION
Mark Bertolini is one of the most forceful advocates calling for a change in corporate culture—one where the company’s focus isn’t just on the bottom line, but also on the wellness of its employees. The fact that he’s also the CEO of the country’s largest health insurer makes the message all the more compelling. In a freewheeling 1-on-1 interview with Time Inc.’s Chief Content Officer, Alan Murray, Bertolini relates how two very personal health care crises dramatically transformed his management philosophy—and why other corporate leaders should take heed.

Exploring the condractitory relationship between led (processed) and hesian (natural).
The led is heavy, strong, masculine but soft. He is passive and is a push over. He is dominated by the feminine, natural and flexible hesian, who is scratchy, violent and dominant.
The hesian is a violent girlfriend.
The interaction between these two leaves the led beaten and bruised.
When the led rolls over from side to side and makes contact with the hesian he is left with surface damage of varying degrees. In the photo on the left the led is pictured ontop of hesian, but still the hesian is stronger and more dominant.

The slide shows a group of 12 men playing quoits on the deck of a ship. The man centre-right has just thrown his shot and his ring has landed on the pin in front of him. A boy stands at the far right looking directly at the camera.

Title |
L'arbe des quatre saisons
The tree of four seasons (1994)
oil on canvas
102 x 102 cm
Occasion | Bangkok Art Biennale - Nurture Gaia
Born in Bangkok, Princess Marsi Paribatra (1930-2013) was the only daughter of Prince Chumbot Paribatra who began her career as a self-taught artist. She was exposed to fantastic art and surrealism during her studies at Sorbonne University, Paris. Steeped in European art history, she explored fantasy, dreams, mythology, and mysticism, and participated at Salon des Comparisons, Musee d'Art Moderne in Paris. She found affiliation with fantastic art that explore, dreams, mythology, mysticism, bestiary, fables, and fairy tales. In the domain of phantasm, Princess Marsi Paribatra compared them with Hindu-Buddhist deities.
Princess Marsi Paribatra met Salvadore Dali and discussed about her dreams that were mostly figurative with nature, animals, and gardens, as well as birth, love, old age, and death. Princess Marsi Paribatra depicted all kinds of animals with centaurs, chimeras and human-beasts roaming in bacchanalian reverie. She lived in Annot alone with her cats, dogs and canaries in the woods.
Princess Marsi Paribatra took interest in Dorothea Tanning and Leonor Fini, whose subjects focus on female bodies, erotic pleasures, and isolation of women. In Noah's Ark, 1991 and Leda and the Swan, 1999, animals and masked creatures mingle with humans and deities. She referred to Greek mythology in which Zeus came to Leda in the form of the swan to seduce her. Scenes of mother earth and goddess worship relate to Nurture Gaia which inspired the theme of BAB 2024.

Every year, Realtors® Care Day offers a helping hand to homeowners in need by providing exterior home repairs and adaptive safety modifications. Regional Habitat for Humanity chapters, the City of Charlotte, and other housing partners identify homeowners who qualify for the program.
Last month, realtors and City of Charlotte Code Enforcement volunteers joined forces to make a meaningful difference in Charlotte neighborhoods. They performed various tasks such as cleaning gutters, landscaping, repairing stairs, and enhancing exterior areas. We express our gratitude for their hard work and dedication.
