The Problems Relating to the Management & Excavations of the Archaeological Ruins of Herculaneum / Pompeii as Reported in Foreign Press (1904-2002). "Prof. Amedeo Maiuri 77, Archaeologist of Pompeii," The N. Y. Times, Apr. 8, 1963, p. 47 [1/2].
I had been struggling over this fire. Moving the logs, making more smoke than flame. I finally exclaimed, in a frustration much heavier than just that moment, that this fire and our marriage were the same, once great but now puttering and going out. He said "Yeah, this fire is our relationship. It just needs a few adjustments." Moments later, after I moved the logs and added a bit more kindling, the flames leapt into action. So that was a cool moment.
This relates to the previous picture of Ruby zonked out after working in the woods with Paul. I thought you might enjoy seeing what that environment looks like. Ruby is always looking ahead, hoping to see something new and exciting. Paul was really nervous having her with him at first for fear of her getting lost or hurt but she has learned quickly to stay close and listen to his commands. She is so happy and getting lots of good exercise. She's also good company for him.
Unfortunately, Cooper is stuck with outings around town with me. We have taken him to the woods a few times but he's not as reliable about recall and listening. If he saw a deer, elk or chipmunk, all bets would be off. But that's a Wheaten for you;)
The figure of 434,000 relates to a February 2006 analysis of the New Orleans Metropolitan Statistical Area (NOMAS) which is comprised of 7 parishes (or small counties). Of these 430,000 homes, the report deemed 270,000 as uninhabitable. As of August 2006 64,150 FEMA trailers were in use throughout Lousiana which does not indicate a rapid recovery but rather a slow return of displaced residents. In addition, 18,000 apartment units were damaged by flooding in this metropolitan statistical area.
New Orleans is a city and also a county referred to as Orleans Parish. Within Orleans Parish 80% of homes were damaged or destroyed by flooding . The pre-Katrina population of Orleans parish was 484,674. (Oakland, CA has a population of 415,492). As of March 2007 the Orleans Parish popluation is 255,000.
So this home is in Orleans Parish, specifically the impoverished Upper Ninth Ward (wards are city voting districts) . Water levels here rapidly rose 5-10 feet. In the lower Ninth Ward (meaning further downriver) water levels rapidly rose 10-15 feet knocking buildings and cars around. Water stood at slightly lower levels for about 4 week. My friend's parents live in the highest (income and topographic) 20% area of unflooded Orleans Parish -- now known as the "Sliver by the River".
In St. Bernard Parish, just east of Orleans Parish and comprised of several small middle-class towns, 10-15 feet of flood water severely damaged or destroyed 100% of the homes. The pre-Katrina population of St. Bernard Parish was 67,229. (Mountain View CA has a population of 70,708.) As of October 2006 the population was 25,489.
Imagine all the folks of Oakland and Mountain View evacuating and just over half being back after 18 months....
Also keep in mind these figures do not include data on the area's schools, businesses, office buildings, churches, hospitals, parks, museums, etc. etc. which were widely affected. I read in the local news that school enrollment in Orleans Parish is expected to jump sharply this fall but school districts have only spent 10-25% of their FEMA funds and will be scrambling to get ready. In St. Bernard Parish, which was 100% wiped out, a proactive local school leadership went to and beyond FEMA managing an outpouring of private and non-profit support to rebuild, feed and educate 3000 students this school year (6000 students remain displaced.)
As you can see and hear, the need for help is still great. Habitat for Humanity along with a few other non-profit groups are well organized and helping to get people of Orleans and St. Bernard Parish back into houses.

Kick Butts Day 2014. Representatives from the Department of Public Health (DPH) today joined more than 250 young people from across the Commonwealth at the State House for the national observance of Kick Butts Day, recognizing the contributions of teenagers in smoking cessation and prevention efforts.
The young people participating in today’s event are part of DPH’s youth movement, The 84, which represents the 84 percent of young people in Massachusetts who don’t smoke.
High school students involved in The 84 have been educating their communities and their local lawmakers about issues relating to tobacco and, working with local health boards and other programs; have promoted effective tobacco prevention strategies in their communities. Members of The 84 Movement have been vital in fighting the way tobacco industry markets its products to youth.

Legend relates that two Irish Princes washed ashore during a storm, fell in love with two of the seven daughters of the King of Kintail. Having promised to send their five brothers for the remaining sisters, the Princes married the two youngest Princesses and returned to Ireland. The five sisters waited in vain, and eventually asked the Grey Magician of Coire Dhunnaid to extend their vigil beyond life itself, whereupon he turned them into mountains.

A creative outing with my photo club - Inland Empire Photo Club - where we played with light and motion and long exposures to create kinetic art. It was a wonderful, creative evening.

The first accounts relating to Meleto date back to the eleventh century, at which time it was a property of the Benedictine monks. Subsequently it became the property of a certain “Guardellotto”, a member of a local feudal family, whom Frederick I Barbarossa dispossessed of his properties, giving them to the Ricasoli-Firidolfi family.
The family branch of Firidolfi da Meleto originated here. The name “Meleto in Chianti” was first included in the “Libro degli Estimi” (Book of surveying) of the Florentine Guelphs as property of Firidolfi family in 1256.
Its location, set between the Republics of Siena and Florence, ensured that the Castle was the background of many wars between the Guelphs and the Ghibellines, one of which was the second Aragonese invasion of Chianti in 1478 when it was occupied by enemy troops, and during the Medici War, in 1529, when it was besieged by the Senesi militia. new things are being added on the old frames and structures... it's great to feel the old memories while strolling along these walkways... #singaporepolytechnic #sp #sg #memories #walkways #basketball #half #court #stairs #stairway #stair

ART 656 Museum Studies project explores historic and current issues of looting and repatriation as they relate to museum collections.
I often relate how people can walk to the Capital buildings from the float plane terminal... this shot shows this well. The domed buildings in the leftmost background are those government buildings. The larger buildings (center and right) are upscale hotels. This portion of the harbor fleet is dedicated to tourism... boat tours, whale watching, etc.

The Fay Thomas Collection includes family archives relating to the Thomas family. Moses Thomas (1825-1878) was a significant figure in the history of the area now known as the City of Whittlesea, Victoria, Australia. Thomas and Ann and their family lived at "Mayfield", Mernda, Victoria.
Miss Lily Thomas (1871-1946), Thomas and Ann’s fourth daughter lived there all her life. She collected postcards which her family and friends sent her on a very regular basis. It was an easy and enjoyable way to keep in touch. Production of postcards blossomed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Lily’s collection encompasses the so-called Golden Age (1890-1915) with many postmarked 1906-1907. Some were sent to other members of the family.
The collection document the natural landscape as well as the built environment—buildings, gardens, parks, and tourist sites. Topographical Postcards showing street scenes and general views from Australian and international locations, some of which are artistic views. Popular postcard manufacturers such as Tuck’s Postcards are included in the collection.
Decorative cards, many embellished with floral motives (as a nod to the receiver Lily?) and embossing. Greeting cards are common for Christmas, New Year, Easter and of course birthdays.
Regular senders can be identified from Kyneton and the Great Ocean Road area, Victoria and there is a siginifant collection from Scotland (but not sent from there).
