A landing card relating to Albert Einstein's escape from Nazi Germany has been discovered and put on display for the first time at the UK Border Agency's national museum in Liverpool.
The Jewish physicist fled from his homeland when Adolf Hitler came to power. A bounty was put on his head by the Nazis, who named him an enemy of the regime.
Landing cards were completed by all passengers arriving in Britain. Einstein's card is proof of his journey from Ostende, Belgium to Dover on 26 May 1933. On the reverse, he wrote that he was bound for Oxford.
After nearly 80 years stored at Heathrow Airport, it was discovered by curators from the museum, which is called 'Seized! The Border and Customs Uncovered'.
Assistant curator Lucy Gardner said:
'We didn't know this landing card ever existed until we visited UK Border Agency officers at Heathrow. We were keen on acquiring any documents relating to immigration, but were stunned to find paperwork relating to such a prominent historical figure as Albert Einstein.
'What's remarkable is that the landing card bears his signature, has his profession as "professor" and lists his nationality at Swiss. This shows how Einstein had renounced his German citizenship only weeks earlier in angry reaction to Nazi policies.
'This tiny piece of paper brings to life Einstein's escape from the Nazis to England. This country became a safe haven for him until he eventually settled in the US.'

The word Endurance as an Adjective is defined as:
denoting or relating to a race or other sporting event that takes place over a long distance or otherwise demands great physical stamina.
However, I feel the best way to describe how this season has gone is to use the Noun definition of the word: the fact or power of enduring an unpleasant or difficult process or situation without giving way
The 3rd and final race of the 2016 season was held at the postponed Bang Saen Festival of Speed. The championship standings showed the #36 Toyota with such a commanding lead from the first two races that only a small miracle would see TR-Motorsport crowned as champions. However unlikely it may be the scenario was Thomas and the DC5 to finish in first while the Toyota failed to cross the line at all, being the slowest car on the grid - this was tall order!
As with all the endurance races this season the team was beset by mechanical issues.During the extended practice period, gearbox and clutch problems arose resulting in a complete change out of the gearbox. Luckily this rectified the problems and the team were ready for qualifying. Tony Percy, longtime friend of the team and co-driver took the reins of the Honda Integra DC5, with the previous issues still fresh in his mind Tony gently eased the car through qualifying and into a respectable 9th place, which is was an outstanding achievement considering that there were 61 other cars on the track at the same time all vying for a clean lap.
As with all endurance races the 6 hours is split between drivers, for the first stint, Tony pushed the Integra into 7th before the first changeover. The safety car period eventually became a red flagged race and all cars returned to the pits resulting in the team losing any advantage they had gained. Seven cars had been involved in the on-track pileup and although this meant fewer cars in the race and more space on track it took several hours to remove the cars and fix the damaged barriers.
At the restart, Thomas powered his way into 2nd place overall and was somehow setting faster times than the leading Toyota. He consolidated his position up until the next driver change however the gremlins were back playing with the clutch again causing the car to struggle to change gear. Eventually, all the gears except 4th had failed with Tony limping around the circuit. The decision was then made to pit early and see if the issue could be solved. No fix could be applied so it was 4th gear all the way to the chequered flag for the final 1 hour 24 minutes. Ironically the leading Toyota crashed several times and finished dead last but this was still enough to win the championship. TR-Motorsport finished 4th in class,later promoted to 3rd as another team had received a 30 lap penalty for a jump start behind the safety car.
TR-Motorsports final position in the Enduring Endurance Championship was 3rd in class, with just a little bit more luck who knows what might have been……
Super Production Class
Race One
An eventful weekend of racing greeted TR-Motorsport at the final rounds of the Thailand Super Series held at the picturesque Bang Saen Beach Street Circuit. The final event had been postponed from November ’16 to February ’17 due to the passing of the late King. With the postponement came a long gap giving us the perfect opportunity to concentrate on some R & D in the hope of closing the gap to Championship Victor Hideharu Kuroki. After some minor tweaks to the car, a major redesign of the front Air Intake was undertaken which provided very encouraging results after completing several simulations on the Dyno equipment.
Simulations are all well and good, however, it’s on the track where it counts and Thomas fully obliged with the fastest lap around the circuit in official practice. When qualifying began both Thomas and Hideharu were setting fastest lap after fastest lap, nip and tuck all the way. Eventually, Thomas managed to claim a fantastic Pole Position by just one-tenth of a second from Hideharu, being Pole on a tight and twisty circuit is always vital so the race to the first corner could possibly decide the race.
Due to our first gear ratio being longer and the race to the first corner uphill we knew wewould be at a disadvantage. Thomas got off the line perfectly and stormed up the hill defending his line to the left to try and outwit Hideharu who was virtually alongside the ‘Blue Blur’, paint was traded several times before Hideharu backed out and slotted in behind to mount another challenge. The final corner of lap 1 caused a gasp from the TR-Motorsport team and fans as Hideharu once again tried a move, this time on the inside but again showed professionalism by backing off at the right time.
By the middle of lap 2 Thomas had pulled out a small lead and held on for the remainder of the race even breaking the lap record on several occasions, Hideharu pushed Thomas all the way to the chequered flag and saw his 100% record gone as Thomas, 10 years after his first win at Bang Saen came home with the spoils and a much needed 20 points, cementing his second place position in the championship.
Race 2
After the elation of the previous victory had faded, the team of mechanics led by Sven Thummel got to work on the car to check everything over and prepare for Race 2. The team soon spotted an issue with the wishbones as the bushings were damaged and as a precautionary measure these were duly replaced. As with all previous rounds, the top 5 finishers from Race 1 started in reverse order meaning Thomas would start from 5th. As the cars assembled on the grid all looked good and a top 3 position looked more than possible.
As the car left for the warm lap Thomas felt an issue with the steering although not terminal, Thomas made the wisest choice to visit the pits to try and ascertain what the issue was. The team of mechanics could not find anything obvious so the car headed back out on track. People reading this familiar with the rules and regulations of motorsport, will of course know that our little visit to the pits would mean starting at the back of the grid, this was only compounded by the fact that due to a miscommunication with the stewards we forced to wait at the pit lane exit some 600 meters away from the back of the grid!
Regular readers will know that we have had similar issues before and still come out on top. However, today was not going to be one of those days! The first 3 laps of the race went perfectly with Thomas making his way through the field from a lowly 19th to a respectable 10th. The racing gods were smiling on us as a safety car deployment bunched the whole pack back up and with 9 laps to go top 3 was still an outside possibility. In came the safety car down went the throttle and that's where the problems began, a massive loss of power resulted in cars streaming past a limping Thomas. On the pit to car radio turning the electrics on and off to reset the car,was suggested - it worked! But by now Thomas was once again at the back of the grid. For the remaining laps, a valiant Thomas fought back to a very respectful 8th place and again set the fastest lap and broke the track record for the Super Production Class.
After the race, the car was checked over by the official Thailand Super Series scrutineers and as with all races we have competed in this year,they found nothing to report. Although dejected the team were still in good spirits after another great week of motorsport at Bang Saen Beach and look forward to returning in July to compete in the GTC Supercar Class with the new Porsche 911 (997).

Louis Napoleon Bonaparte was heir and nephew to Napoleon I. He made two attempts at organising a coup against the government and rule of the King, Louis-Philippe, the second attempt especially laughable and ending with his comfortable imprisonment. He soon escaped (1846) and went to live in Southern England.
The king was overthrown for the last time in 1848, and the Second Republic established; Louis-Napoleon returned to France and surprisingly won the first presidential election. Biding his time, he launched a coup d'état against his own government in 1851, and established the French Second Empire, proclaiming himself Emperor of France on December 2 1852.
Overseeing much of the creation of modern Paris, a greatly developing economy and a string of military achievements, his controvertial rule was mostly a success until the latter 1860s. His health failing, popular unrest growing and the increased threat of Prussia which was challenging France's domination of continental Europe, led him to enter the Franco-Prussian War in 1870. This was a disaster, within months the French were defeated at the Battle of Sedan in which 10,000s of troops were captured and the Emperor himself. Two days later, September 4 1870, he was deposed and the Government of the Third Republic created which sued for peace with Prussia.
Loius-Napoleon was imprisoned in Germany for six months before he and his family went into exile in England, in Surrey. He died January 9 1873 and was later buried in an Imperial Crypt beneath the church of Farnborough Abbey in Hampshire, a monastery founded by his wife the former Empress Eugene.
The objects: the least impressive of the four items has the most local interest -
(1) my father found the worn and aged coin shown at the lower left. We were walking in the Durham Dales near Stanhope a few years ago, and happened to stop beside an old gate in a stone farm wall. Looking at the view across the valley, he happened to look down and noticed the coin embedded in the worn ground surface. He picked it up and unable to see what it was, passed it to me. Expecting it to be an old penny we got a surpise when it turned out to be an 1864 10 Centimes of Napoleon III. Who dropped it? Who knows! It is unlikely to have been a tourist - most likely a French farm labourer or even an exile from the upheavals of 1870-71. In 1871 an uprising in Paris saw the Government flee to Bordeaux, and led to the worlds first Communist government which declared Paris an independant city state. This ended badly, as the government of the Third Republic fought to recapture the city and even sought the aid of Prussia to do so! Following a bloody victory, thousands of the insurrectionists were either imprisoned, exiled, escaped or were executed.
(2) lower centre - a bronze medal issued for the Paris Exposition of 1854. The back depicts the Coat of Arms of the Empire surrounded by the arms of the other nations which participated in the exhibition.
(3) lower right - a CDV or cabinet card of the aged emperor. This was probably photographed after his exile and would have been purchased by his supporters.
(4) top left - a letter with a stamp bearing his portrait. This was posted to Montmartre in Paris in 1864.

C’est le Centre des études et de recherches du patrimoine maroco-lusitanien (CERPML) relevant du ministère de la Culture, qui a annoncé la découverte du site archéologique médiéval appelé «Maziren». Le site est situé non loin du phare de Sidi Misbah et des ruines de la ville des Moujahidines (combattants), à 4 km environ au nord d’El Jadida.
Au XVIe siècle, les Portugais avaient cité dans leurs textes historiographiques une ville très ancienne en ruine comme étant «Mazagao Velho» qui veut dire le vieux Mazagan. Il s’agirait d’un village dont les activités étaient reliées à une baie faisant office de port naturel. Maziren aurait été habitée par des populations berbères, des Masmoudas ou des Sanhaja.
La ville ancienne est actuellement complètement rasée du fait de son ancienneté. Les multiples travaux agricoles et de constructions ont aussi contribué à occulter ses repères. Néanmoins subsistent encore des traces de 3 anciens cimetières avec des mausolées délimités par des pierres sous forme de «Haouchs». Les pierres peintes à la chaux blanche auraient été retirées des fondations même de Maziren.
Des pratiques superstitieuses et religieuses se pratiquent encore maintenant par la population avoisinante. Des cierges s’allument autour des mausolées selon des rites entretenus par une tradition orale. Des zones archéologiques riches en matériels céramiques avec parfois présence de la pierre taillée ont été également mises à jour. Présence aussi de silos et de «Matfias» et qui sont des sortes de citerne. Et qui servaient à la conservation de céréales et de l’eau. La ville antique est actuellement en cours de délimitation. Mais la tâche n’est pas aisée. A part quelques parties des cimetières, le site est empiété sous formes de petites propriétés privées servant de champs pour les cultures.
Les chercheurs archéologues auront malgré tout à cœur de décoder une page de l’histoire de la région. Ils auront à se référer à des textes anciens pour leurs travaux. Il existe des textes ainsi que le fameux livre du géographe Chérif Al Idrissi, paru à la moitié du XIIe siècle (au moment où s’édifie la mosquée de Marrakech) et qui parle de la «Marça de Mazigan», c’est-à-dire le port de la mer. Il parle d’un port de Mazigan et donne toutes les dimensions de la Marça par rapport à Anfa (ancienne ville de Casablanca) et d’autres villes du Royaume. Ces explications confirmaient déjà l’existence d’un port de mer au milieu des XII et XIIIe siècles appelé Mazigan. Site où s’érigera par la suite Mazagan la portugaise, devenue l’actuelle ville d’El Jadida.
Des textes de Said Al Mourrakouchi parlent du Cap de Mazigan, de la ville de Breija et de son port qui exporte du blé. A citer aussi le livre de Hassan Al Wazzan dit aussi Léon l’Africain, qui a été capturé par les corsaires et vendu en Italie. Léon parle de Mazigan comme étant une très ancienne ville.

Now the tale relates further that the Serpent had been under the Earth in the clefts of the rock, and there had met something resembling human forms — the Serpent had reached a temple; this is none other than a symbol of the Mystery Temples of all ages, — this concealed Temple which was in the clefts below the Earth is the symbol of the Sanctuaries of Initiation. In this Temple the Serpent found the three great priests of Initiation; these priests were gifted with the highest forces of human nature, which theosophy calls Atma, Buddhi, Manas. They are called by Goethe the King of Beauty, the King of Wisdom, and the King of Strength or Will; — with these three basic forces of the soul, into which the human soul must be initiated, the Mystic had to be united in the Temple of the Mysteries — and Goethe represents the Serpent, all luminous within, because it had taken in the gold of wisdom, humility.
The old man with the lamp is another figure — what does he represent? He has a lamp which has the peculiarity of only shining when another light is there. Because the Serpent is luminous and illuminates the inner Hall of the Mystery Temple with its own radiating light, — Goethe expresses these thoughts in another passage in the words “If the eye were not sensitive to the Sun it could not perceive the light.” Here he expresses in poetic words what he expressed in the fairy tale in pictures; what we in Anthroposophy call “occult knowledge” is expressed by the old man with the lamp, — the light of occult knowledge cannot shine to anyone who had not prepared himself to receive it.
It appears to no one who has not worked his way up to that higher stage of development at which his higher self, his selfless nature shines forth from within, bringing light to meet light, — the highest wisdom is called occult, because it only appears when a man brings his own light to meet it. When those two lights, the intuitive light from above, and the light that comes from the personal, shine into one another, they then give that which man experiences in his transmutation as Spiritual Alchemy — then the space around him become light, he then learns to recognise the highest Spiritual forces, the gifts of the three Kings; Wisdom, Beauty, and Strength, — the gift of the golden King is Wisdom, that of the silver King is Beauty or Piety, the gift of the bronze King is Strength or force of Will. Man can only understand his innermost forces, he can only understand himself when he meets with the light of the lamp which can only shine when there is already a light. Then the three Kings appear in their radiance, and at the same time the significance of the fourth King becomes apparent — the King who is composed of the metals of the three others; — he is the symbol of the lower nature, in which the noble forces of Wisdom, Beauty, and Strength work together as disorderly and inharmonious chaos. These three forces that live in a highly developed soul are also to be found in lower natures, though there they are chaotic and inharmonious. This fourth King is the Kingdom of the present world; — the Chaotic mixture of Wisdom, Beauty, and Strength, — the soul-forces which can only attain the highest when they work together harmoniously, — affect one another in a chaotic way in the present age. The old man said of the fourth King “Er wird sich setzen” (here he will sit down) — The Chaotic mixture will have disappeared when that which Goethe so ardently longed for shall have come to pass, that is, that the Temple shall no longer be hidden, but shall be raised to the full light of day, when it shall have ascended from the depths, and all men will be able to serve in the Temple of Initiation, which will be a bridge across which all men may pass to and fro. That will be a time when all men will have made themselves worthy of being influenced by the highest wisdom, piety, and strength and will. The Temple will then have fulfilled its task. It will have raised itself above the river of passions, and the forces of passion will have become so pure and noble that the highest Spiritual can uplift itself in the Temple, in the clear light of day, above the stream of passions and desires. To this end it is necessary that mankind should be filled with the “Stirb und werde” (dying and becoming) which Goethe so distinctly outlined in his “West-Ostlichen Divan.” Goethe was frequently asked for the solution of the riddle and he replied “The solution of the riddle lies in the fairy tale itself, and not in one word alone.” There is a passage during the conversation in the Temple which we take to be the solution of the riddle. The solution is not a thing which can be expressed in words, but in an inner resolve; that was indicated by Goethe in the fairy tale. The Serpent said “I will sacrifice myself, I will purify myself through selflessness.” It is precisely this which must be taken as the profoundest solution of the riddle, it is an act, and not a doctrine. Till now one could only pass across the River in two ways. The one was when at noon the green Serpent laid itself across the River and formed a bridge, so that at the mid-day hour it was possible to go across the River. This means that at the present age there are moments in a man's life when the Sun is at noon for him, when he is ripe to yield himself to the highest Spiritual light; but he is always drawn away again and again from these noon-tide moments of life, into the lower world full of passions. In such noon-tide moments the elect of the Spirit can pass across from the shore of the sense-life to the shore of the Spirit.

Cal State East Bay Collaborates in Music & Memory Book-to-Action Project
Cal State East Bay is collaborating with Hayward Public Library and other community agencies in the powerful Music & Memory Book-to-Action Project, which involves community members reading a book, seeing a film, and then engaging in a community service activity that relates to the subject of the book and film.
Similar to a traditional book club, the Book-to-Action project provides an opportunity to collectively read and discuss Dr. Oliver Sacks’ book Musicophilia: Tales of Music & the Brain. Sacks is a professor of neurology at the New York University School of Medicine and the author of several books.
Book-to-Action participants also see the movie “Alive Inside,” which follows Dan Cohen, founder of the nonprofit organization Music & Memory, as he fights the healthcare system to demonstrate music’s ability to combat memory loss and restore a sense of self to those suffering from it.
Participants then put their new-found knowledge into action by engaging in community service. Locally, members of the Hayward community are invited to participate in community sing-a-longs and other musical events with seniors in places where they live and gather.
“The project is a true collaboration of many different CSUEB departments and community agencies and exemplifies how we can collectively contribute to the public good when we work together,” said Andrea Wells, community partnerships coordinator in the University’s Center for Community Engagement.
CSUEB got involved in the program in December 2014 when Sally Thomas, librarian at the Hayward Public Library, approached Wells to see how the University might participate. Shortly thereafter, two students in the Pioneers for Change program, supervised by Wells and Thomas, began contacting senior homes to set up music events and reaching out to faculty to ask for their help.
“We are seeing a rich interaction of CSUEB scholars and students, nonprofit agencies, and the public library and community members we serve in discussions related to developing a healthy framework for aging and support for those who are living with communication disorders like aphasia and age-related diseases like dementia and Alzheimer’s,” Thomas said. “There’s an incredible amount of interest in the healing power of music and its ability to bring the young and old together.”
The University’s Leadership and Employee Enrichment Program (LEEP) bought 150 copies of Musicophilia: Tales of Music & the Brain and distributed them for free to members of the campus and local community who registered or attended at least one event. On May 7, CSUEB librarian Tom Bickley and Hayward librarian Thomas led a discussion of the book with faculty, staff, students, and community members.
In addition, Nidhi Mahendra, chair of the Department of Communicative Sciences and Disorders, spoke about the impact of memory impairments at the film screenings. She and her class organized a poster session on campus and a performance at Hayward City Hall by The Aphasia Tones, a Cal State East Bay chorus composed of persons learning to live with aphasia.
Several University partners are collaborating, including the Center for Community Engagement, LEEP, School of Arts and Multimedia, and the departments of Communicative Sciences and Disorders, Music, and Human Development. Community partners are the Hayward Public Library, Alzheimer's Services of the East Bay, Eden Housing's Josephine Lum Lodge and Hayward High School.
On May 13, faculty, staff and community members participated in a campus-based screening of "Alive Inside" and educational poster session hosted by the Department of Communicative Sciences and Disorders in honor of Better Hearing and Speech Month and Older Americans Month. The event featured a performance by the CSUEB Singing Society directed by Department Chair Buddy James from the School of Arts and Media.
Following the film screening, CSUEB Assistant Professor of Human Development Xeno Rasmusson facilitated a Q&A with panelists, including Professor Nidhi Mahendra, LEEP director Corey Gin, and Hayward librarian Sally Thomas.
The CSUEB community is invited to participate in upcoming music-sharing events with local seniors, including an event on May 21 @ 3:30 pm at the Josephine Lum Lodge, 2747 Oliver Drive, Hayward.

The Pike Street Synagogue, constructed in 1903-04 for the Congregation Sons of Israel Kalwarie, is a rare surviving synagogue building from that period of New York's history when the Lower East Side served as America's main portal for millions of Jewish immigrants. Designed by the architect Alfred E. Badt, this limestone-fronted building with its twin, lateral staircases up to the porticoed main entrance, and double stair towers projecting from the main facade creates an imposing presence on the crowded street. When constructed, this synagogue was one of the largest on the Lower East Side, and one of the few built specifically for this purpose. The Congregation Sons of Israel Kalwarie, started in 1853, continued to worship in this building until the 1980s. The building stood vacant for several years, but recently has been rehabilitated for a variety of uses with a Buddhist temple on the main level, apartments above, and commercial space on the ground floor.
The Jewish Community in New York
The first Jews arrived in the Dutch colony of Nieuw Amsterdam in 1654, coming from Brazil in an unsuccessful attempt to reach Holland. Although the Jews were allowed to stay in the colony, they gained political as well as religious rights only when the British took control in 1664. Around 1682, the first Jewish congregation in New York was established: Congregation Shearith Israel or Remnant of Israel. It was not until 1729 that the congregation constructed its first synagogue building, a small structure on Mill Street which served until 1818, when it was replaced with a larger one.
Between 1815 and 1825 the Jewish population of New York swelled to 500, with immigrants coming mostly from Europe primarily because of the fall of Napoleon. In 1825 a group of German and Polish Jews broke away from Congregation Shearith Israel to farm their own synagogue, Congregation B 'nai Jeshrun. This was the beginning of a trend, as numerous other congregations were then created out of existing groups because of political differences, different interpretations of religious law and customs, or simply because of the desire to worship with fellow countrymen using common rituals.
By 1860 there were approximately 27 synagogues in New York City, most of which resulted from divisions within existing synagogues. This growth in the number of congregations was supported by, but not wholly attributable to, the increasing Jewish population which rose to 10,000 in 1846 and then to 60,000 in 1880.
During the early eighteenth century, most of New York's Jews lived close together downtown, indicated by the fact that Shearith Israel built, and then rebuilt its synagogue on Mill Street. Typically, immigrants of common backgrounds often chose to live near each other in an effort to provide mutual support in their new land. As they became more comfortable in their new home and achieved more financial success, they were often willing to move away from the original group.
Thus by the 1820s, the area of Broadway, Laight, Charlton, Greene, and Wooster Streets began attracting some wealthier Jews. By the 1830 s and 1840s the area around Bayard, Baxter, Mott, and Chatham Streets was home to many Dutch, German, and Polish Jews, while Chrystie, Market, Henry, and Division Streets began to attract many other new Jewish immigrants and became the nucleus of what came to be known as the Jewish Lower East Side.
As this neighborhood became more densely populated, synagogue congregations subdivided based on kinship and on countries and towns of origin, each group supporting its own synagogue.
The population density of the area allowed for the existence of many synagogues in a neighborhood, most of which were small groups which rented rooms where they could hold their services. Once a congregation reached a certain size and had enough financial resources, it often rented or purchased an existing building, in many cases a former church.
Among the early nineteenth century congregations on the Lower East Side, only Shaarey Tefilah , Anshe Slonim , Rodeph Shalom , and the Eldridge Street Synagogue erected new buildings for their own use. Of the 350 New York congregations in existence in 1905, fewer than fifty worshiped in buildings constructed as synagogues.
Congregation Sons of Israel Kalwarie
In 1852 an important Orthodox synagogue was organized called the Re/A ^aweJrasA or House of Study. This was the first synagogue in America which trained rabbis who could perform various important ritual functions and interpret the law. Previously, rabbinic decisions had to be obtained from rabbis in Europe, and special jobs such as the supervision of kosher butchering were left up to the individual synagogues.
Desiring to create their own rabbinic school, a small group of Russian-Polish Jews broke from this congregation in 1853, and formed the Re/A ^aweJrasA Z/vwe Hsroe/ FeA'Je Po/ew . A man named Judah Middleman became their first rabbi, and the group rented a room on Walker and Baxter streets in which to hold services.
By 1882, it had taken the name Congregation and Chevra Ukadisha [burial society] B'nai Israel Mikalwarie and purchased a building located at 13-15 Pike Street.5 It remodeled this previously residential building for use as a synagogue.6 The congregation continued to grow and prosper, and housed a well respected, progressive religious school for children run by Mr. Albert Lucas.7 With an influx of new immigrants around the turn of the century, there was a need for more space. In 1903 the congregation moved to temporary quarters while building a large new structure on the site.
The new synagogue opened to great ceremony in March 1904.9 Several rabbis from other important synagogues gave speeches, as did Rabbi Israel Cooper, who had been serving as leader of this congregation for 25 years. The building could seat 1,500 people, making it one of the largest in the area. Because of its size, this building often was used for large meetings and ceremonies.
Synagogue Architecture
Except for some direction as to the interior arrangement of several important ritual objects, the Jewish religion does not dictate the form of synagogue buildings. Jewish prayer services can occur in individual rooms, former church buildings, or private houses. Beginning in the mid-nineteenth century, however, American architects started looking for an "appropriate" synagogue style.
During this period, when a style was valued for its associations, both Gothic and Romanesque Revival designs connoted the ancient character of the religion. The Romanesque design trends were also part of America's adaptation of the Rundbogenstil as it was brought here by German architects and publications at mid-century.
Several mid-nineteenth century synagogue buildings provided precedents which became generally accepted forms for this building type. Eidlitz and Blesch's Wooster Street synagogue for Congregation Shaarey Tefilah in 1848 with its round-arched openings and corbel table at the roofline, was the first to use the Romanesque vocabulary. In Anshe Slonim, architect Alexander Saeltzer was the first to use distinct, projecting tower forms flanking the central section of the facade.
These towers served the practical purpose of enclosing interior stairs to the women's galleries. Congregation B'nai Jeshrun built a new building on Greene Street in 1851 which was very similar to Anshe Slonim, with its twin towers and pointed-arch openings. In addition, like Anshe Slonim, the three main doors in the central section of the facade were raised above ground level and reached by a set of stairs. Rodeph Shalom, which built its synagogue on Clinton Street in 1853 , reverted back to the round-arched style but maintained the twin stair-blocks which "had become a permanent feature of the synagogue facade."
Near the turn of the century, synagogue architects, like other American designers, were influenced by the return to classicism which became common after the World's Columbian Exposition in 1893. At this same time, archeological expeditions in Palestine were uncovering synagogue structures dating back to the Greco -Roman period which displayed classical forms. In 1897, the well-known synagogue architect, Arnold Brunner designed a temple-fronted structure for Shearith Israel on Central Park West and West 70th Street which included huge columns, pilasters, and a large pediment. This building set a precedent for the use of classical forms and ornament on other synagogues of the period.
The Pike Street Synagogue
The Sons of Israel Kalwarie congregation hired architect Alfred E. Badt to create the plans for its new synagogue. Little is known of Badt. His name appears in New York City directories only for the year 1904. He is associated with several tenements and rowhouses in New York, including 23 Thompson Street and 118 East 17th Street.
The building for the Congregation Sons of Israel Kalwarie draws on many of the forms and ornamental styles described above. The Romanesque influence can be seen in several areas of the building, including the plan, a basilica on a raised basement; the corbel table near the roofline; and the round arches over the entrance, in the blind arcade which crowns the building, and the window openings which are further enhanced with bifurcation.
The tripartite facade with its projecting stair towers flanking the raised center section follows a well-established format. Double lateral stairs lead to a recessed entrance, with openings set between elegant columns. These and other columns near the windows, as well as the classical moldings displayed throughout the facade, reflect the classicizing tendencies of this period.
Description
This smooth-faced, limestone building is three stories high above a raised basement.14 A wide bandcourse separates the main floor from the basement while another bandcourse is located above the first story. Above the windows, further horizontal emphasis is provided by a small, round-arched corbel table, embellished by a rosette within each arch.
This in turn is capped by another bandcourse and then a larger, round-arched, blind arcade. Within these arches are shallow indications of bifurcated windows, and small rosettes are located in the spandrels between the arches. A final cornice and a flat roof crown the facade.
Base:
Symmetrically arranged, the tripartite facade has twin projecting towers at each side with a recessed section in between. The central entrance on the raised main story is reached by a double lateral staircase fronted by balustrades. The stone newels have simplified arches and capitals and are capped by gabled roof-like forms. A short, segmental-arched window covered by a metal grille is located at the basement level in each of the tower sections.
At the center of the basement level, under the stairway, are three segmental-arched openings topped by narrow moldings. Originally two windows with a central door, all three openings are now full length. A recessed area is located within these openings, with non-historic doors leading to the ground floor store and to the apartments in the upper stories.
Main level:
In the center section of the main level, the entrance is recessed within a portico with three openings, defined by attenuated columns with foliate capitols. The columns carry round-headed, blind arches edged with simple moldings which have been covered by panels with Chinese lettering. Within the portico the ceiling is divided into three sections, each vaulted with what appear to be Guastavino tiles.
Three non-historic red doors lead to the building's main floor. Two stone lions flank the portico and a large incense holder is located in the middle of this area . Each of the side towers at this level has a large, round-headed, bifurcated window highlighted by narrow, engaged columns and a crisp egg-and-dart molding.
Upper level:
Above the main story, the central, recessed section of the facade has three bays with round-headed, double-height windows. Originally filled with stained glass, these windows retain their original shape , with narrow columns between them.
Each side tower contains a single bay with paired windows on each of the two levels. At the lower level, the two rectangular openings are linked by a narrow column. Above this is a round-arched, bifurcated window with columns and moldings, similar in arrangement to those on the main floor of the towers.
Later History
The Congregation Sons of Israel Kalwarie existed for more than one hundred years. By the late 1970s the membership had declined drastically and the synagogue building was vandalized and in disrepair. Some members of the congregation wanted to sell the property while others did not, precipitating a court battle for the right to sell.
By 1994, the building was purchased by a developer who renovated it for a variety of uses. The ground floor houses commercial space, the main floor serves as a Buddhist temple, and the upper levels have been converted to housing. The major exterior adaptation has been the replacement of the original stained glass windows, most of which were missing or broken. The building continues to contribute a significant historical and cultural presence to its local community.

Esther led us in a time of prayer time morning
What she said about prayer was very true and relatable. Sometimes, I become so self-consious about my own prayer that it becomes insincere to my heart and to God. I focus so much on how I pray, that it becomes just a show. I listen to others pray, rehearse it a million times in my head and then when its my turn, I say the empty words that aren't from my heart.
I want to be genuine in my words and sometimes, praying silently by myself, connects me with God.
We also had a Men's time tonight. The time was a time full of physical obstacles that included running and obstacle courses. It's interesting to see that in a time of physical test, men can learn more about themselves than they ever could, sitting and talking.
For me, I learned that I lack endurance. Running has always been my weakest link. I don't think I can ever run a marathon. Out of the whole group, I was always the one lacking behind and stopping. But more than that, I learned that in a real test, I might give up fast. As a New Yorker, I take pride that I walk a fairly fast pace, but when it comes to running, I am the slowest.
Under an intense run, I show the real me, the tired me, the one who needs other's help. My brothers kept encouraging me and telling me finish this race hard and strong. I thank them for being there.

Dundalk overwhelm Bangor in All Ireland Final

Bangor’s amazing run in the All Ireland Junior Cup came to an abrupt end when they were comprehensively beaten by Dundalk, eventually losing by 55-5.
Where do you start when trying to relate and absorb the events of Saturday’s final at Chambers Park? Firstly, congratulations to worthy winners Dundalk who nullified the Bangor attack, then went on to produce some stunning plays which racked up no less than 8 tries, each by a different player. For Bangor’s part, they were unable to respond to the intensity of Dundalk’s game, and lacked the cutting edge which their opponents used to great effect.
The day started full of promise, as the strong support from North Down made their way to Chambers Park in Portadown, knowing Bangor would be fielding their best team. Once again, the pundits had Bangor as the underdogs – just as they had done so in the previous three rounds! In confounding the experts earlier, Bangor produced some awesome performances against top quality opposition to get to the final. Dundalk had produced some convincing wins in the early rounds of the competition, but had struggled to get past CIYMS in the semi-final, just managing to squeeze ahead at the second time of asking. However, with a number of key players returning to the side in time for this game, they were now back at full strength and would be a formidable force to contend with.
Having won the toss, captain Jamie Clegg elected to play into the stiff wind in the first half. For the first 5 minutes, Bangor doggedly retained possession and tried to play their way into Dundalk’s half through a series of determined forward moves. However, little ground was made and, when possession was finally lost, the Dundalk back line produced a burst that simply cut through the Bangor defence resulting in an easy touch down under Bangor’s posts for a 7-0 lead.
Bangor stuck to their plan and slowly, but patiently, got their attack moving forward, eventually winning a penalty to the left of Dundalk’s posts, but Mark Widdowson’s kick into the wind drifted just wide of the mark.
The contrast in play between the two teams was becoming clear, with Bangor trying to keep the ball close while Dundalk were throwing it wide. The latter strategy was proving to be the more effective as, with 20 minutes gone, a quick back line move with players looping around resulted in an overlap on the right wing which gave a clear run in to again, score under the posts. A further 9 minutes later, they did it again and, although the Bangor defence had sensed the danger and moved across to cover it, their tackling let them down allowing Dundalk to get over in the right hand corner, taking their lead to 19-0.
By now, Bangor were trying to hang on until half time when they could regroup and come out with the wind at their backs. Dundalk, on the other hand were anxious to press home their advantage and give them a more comfortable lead. To Bangor’s credit, although camped on their own line for lengthy spells, they dug in and managed to hold on until the referee’s half time whistle.
As the teams reappeared from the dressing rooms, it was obvious Bangor were ringing the changes, particularly in the backs. With the wind advantage having lessened considerably, Bangor got the second half underway. It was now Dundalk’s turn to adopt the slow, steady approach, just as Bangor had done earlier. However, their more confident off-loading and support play was, once again, taking play deep into Bangor’s territory. Frustration at not being able to gain possession and take play out of their danger area eventually resulted in a yellow card for Clegg after a succession of penalties. Dundalk kicked the penalty to touch, won their lineout and drove for the line. Although initially held up by the Bangor defence, Dundalk’s repeated drives were eventually rewarded with another converted score, extending their lead to 26-0.
From the touchline, the Bangor faithful had felt that if their players had managed to score first in the second half, they may have been able to mount a fight-back and close the gap to their opponents. As it was, this Dundalk score simply bolstered their confidence and pushed Bangor deeper into trouble. With Bangor still a man down, Dundalk added to the score with a penalty and then another score in the corner. Everything was now working for the Leinster men, as even the difficult touchline conversion into the biting wind successfully split the posts, bringing the score to 36-0.
As the game entered the final quarter, and with Dundalk all but holding the cup, Bangor were now on the ropes. By contrast, the Dundalk players were in almost total control, and were not going to slow down now. In a 10 minute spell, they ran in a further 3 tries, making the scoreline 55-0. By now, any sense of dejection the Bangor supporters may have been feeling was now moved to feelings of sympathy for their players. However, pride was at stake and once again Bangor rallied as the game entered its final minutes. At last, the forwards got within striking distance of the Dundalk line and, although their repeated attacks were repelled, they finally managed to do what their opponents had done so effectively, and quickly passed the ball wide to Davy Charles. Even though they were 55 points ahead, the Dundalk defence made Charles work hard to drive through the tackles and score Bangor’s consolation try, bringing the final score to 55-5.
From Bangor’s point of view, the final score doesn’t tell the whole story of this competition. While the final may have resulted in a sad anti-climax for Bangor, the remarkable journey to get there will be remembered for some time. On the day, Dundalk were by far the better side, and Bangor would have to concede that their game was not up to the usual standard. However, there is no doubt the experience of competing at this level is something to relish and the goal now will be to secure a top four place in the league and try again next year.
Everybody at the club has nothing but the highest respect and praise for what has been achieved this year by not just the 1sts, but all the senior teams, and one poor result isn’t going to change that – the welcome at Upritchard Park for the returning players is testament to that. With that in mind, the players now need to put this disappointment behind them and provide the best possible response against a struggling Portadown side at home in the league next Saturday.

The Flume Trail starts at the old Irving Power Plant site. The five mile long trail follows the old flume access road along the canyon wall above Fossil Creek, providing beautiful, wide-open views of the wilderness. There is an easy low-water crossing across flat, solid rock at the trailhead on Forest Road 708. From the trailhead, the trail heads up towards the cliff wall where informational signs can be found. The steep hillside offers little shade to the gently rolling trail. The trail ends at the Old Fossil Springs Dam, where it meets up with Fossil Springs Trail.

Dundalk overwhelm Bangor in All Ireland Final

Bangor’s amazing run in the All Ireland Junior Cup came to an abrupt end when they were comprehensively beaten by Dundalk, eventually losing by 55-5.
Where do you start when trying to relate and absorb the events of Saturday’s final at Chambers Park? Firstly, congratulations to worthy winners Dundalk who nullified the Bangor attack, then went on to produce some stunning plays which racked up no less than 8 tries, each by a different player. For Bangor’s part, they were unable to respond to the intensity of Dundalk’s game, and lacked the cutting edge which their opponents used to great effect.
The day started full of promise, as the strong support from North Down made their way to Chambers Park in Portadown, knowing Bangor would be fielding their best team. Once again, the pundits had Bangor as the underdogs – just as they had done so in the previous three rounds! In confounding the experts earlier, Bangor produced some awesome performances against top quality opposition to get to the final. Dundalk had produced some convincing wins in the early rounds of the competition, but had struggled to get past CIYMS in the semi-final, just managing to squeeze ahead at the second time of asking. However, with a number of key players returning to the side in time for this game, they were now back at full strength and would be a formidable force to contend with.
Having won the toss, captain Jamie Clegg elected to play into the stiff wind in the first half. For the first 5 minutes, Bangor doggedly retained possession and tried to play their way into Dundalk’s half through a series of determined forward moves. However, little ground was made and, when possession was finally lost, the Dundalk back line produced a burst that simply cut through the Bangor defence resulting in an easy touch down under Bangor’s posts for a 7-0 lead.
Bangor stuck to their plan and slowly, but patiently, got their attack moving forward, eventually winning a penalty to the left of Dundalk’s posts, but Mark Widdowson’s kick into the wind drifted just wide of the mark.
The contrast in play between the two teams was becoming clear, with Bangor trying to keep the ball close while Dundalk were throwing it wide. The latter strategy was proving to be the more effective as, with 20 minutes gone, a quick back line move with players looping around resulted in an overlap on the right wing which gave a clear run in to again, score under the posts. A further 9 minutes later, they did it again and, although the Bangor defence had sensed the danger and moved across to cover it, their tackling let them down allowing Dundalk to get over in the right hand corner, taking their lead to 19-0.
By now, Bangor were trying to hang on until half time when they could regroup and come out with the wind at their backs. Dundalk, on the other hand were anxious to press home their advantage and give them a more comfortable lead. To Bangor’s credit, although camped on their own line for lengthy spells, they dug in and managed to hold on until the referee’s half time whistle.
As the teams reappeared from the dressing rooms, it was obvious Bangor were ringing the changes, particularly in the backs. With the wind advantage having lessened considerably, Bangor got the second half underway. It was now Dundalk’s turn to adopt the slow, steady approach, just as Bangor had done earlier. However, their more confident off-loading and support play was, once again, taking play deep into Bangor’s territory. Frustration at not being able to gain possession and take play out of their danger area eventually resulted in a yellow card for Clegg after a succession of penalties. Dundalk kicked the penalty to touch, won their lineout and drove for the line. Although initially held up by the Bangor defence, Dundalk’s repeated drives were eventually rewarded with another converted score, extending their lead to 26-0.
From the touchline, the Bangor faithful had felt that if their players had managed to score first in the second half, they may have been able to mount a fight-back and close the gap to their opponents. As it was, this Dundalk score simply bolstered their confidence and pushed Bangor deeper into trouble. With Bangor still a man down, Dundalk added to the score with a penalty and then another score in the corner. Everything was now working for the Leinster men, as even the difficult touchline conversion into the biting wind successfully split the posts, bringing the score to 36-0.
As the game entered the final quarter, and with Dundalk all but holding the cup, Bangor were now on the ropes. By contrast, the Dundalk players were in almost total control, and were not going to slow down now. In a 10 minute spell, they ran in a further 3 tries, making the scoreline 55-0. By now, any sense of dejection the Bangor supporters may have been feeling was now moved to feelings of sympathy for their players. However, pride was at stake and once again Bangor rallied as the game entered its final minutes. At last, the forwards got within striking distance of the Dundalk line and, although their repeated attacks were repelled, they finally managed to do what their opponents had done so effectively, and quickly passed the ball wide to Davy Charles. Even though they were 55 points ahead, the Dundalk defence made Charles work hard to drive through the tackles and score Bangor’s consolation try, bringing the final score to 55-5.
From Bangor’s point of view, the final score doesn’t tell the whole story of this competition. While the final may have resulted in a sad anti-climax for Bangor, the remarkable journey to get there will be remembered for some time. On the day, Dundalk were by far the better side, and Bangor would have to concede that their game was not up to the usual standard. However, there is no doubt the experience of competing at this level is something to relish and the goal now will be to secure a top four place in the league and try again next year.
Everybody at the club has nothing but the highest respect and praise for what has been achieved this year by not just the 1sts, but all the senior teams, and one poor result isn’t going to change that – the welcome at Upritchard Park for the returning players is testament to that. With that in mind, the players now need to put this disappointment behind them and provide the best possible response against a struggling Portadown side at home in the league next Saturday.

Bouncing into the offices today is the young and vivacious Maxie Lee from TMG C2!
TMG: How have you been, Maxie? It's been awhile since anyone has heard from you.
Maxie: I'm great, thank you! I go by Max now though. After the competition, I took the opportunity to focus on another thing that I love just as modeling...sports! I took a gap year in what was supposed to be my first year of college to participate in Top Model by Grace and see how that went. Things didn't go as easily as I had planned, though, because I was too toned to be seen as a fashion model. It's taken awhile now, but I think I managed to achieve the right balance of athletic and thin now to really take on modeling again.
TMG: It sounds like you had it pretty tough for awhile after the competition. Would you mind elaborating a bit more about your sports interest?
Max: Oh, right! I blew my opportunity for a sports scholarship and my mom will forever hold that against me, but back then modeling was what I really wanted. Now I'm back at uni playing on the women's basketball team. It's great!
TMG: We're very glad to hear that! There is nothing better than to see our alumni confident in their aspirations and chasing after their goals. Now let's take a trip down memory lane and discuss your time in the competition. Did you feel like you got what you were looking for out of the competition?
Max: Well, for one thing that boot camp really excited me. I really knew nothing about modeling so it was a crash course lesson for me! I really tried to just take in everything I could. I was chatting with the make-up artists and the stylists and even some of the girls with more experience than me. I was trying to really get the best I could out of being there and it really wouldn't have hurt if I didn't make it past boot camp. But I did! The beauty shoot was so difficult for me, though. Again, I had really little experience and even though I've always been told I had a pretty face I never modeled before. As Ryan kept telling me, I needed to practice working my angles. Since I wasn't really able to pick up fast enough, I can see why I was the first to go after the boot camp.
TMG: So you agree with your elimination?
Max: Oh for sure. It was fun while it lasted though.
TMG: What do you think you were known for during your time there?
Max: Definitely for being the rookie and the sporty girl. I couldn't really relate to some of the girlier girls like Laurel or Eve.
TMG: Have you kept in touch with anyone from your cycle?
Max: I have tried to. I wasn't there long enough to really bond with any of the girls, I think, but I've actually kept in touch with Aubrey and the other girls who were cut during boot camp.
TMG: Do you have any plans to return to modeling full-time soon? What if we told you Grace had something in the cards for her TMG girls?
Max: I'd really like to give modeling another full-time go. It's going to be a bit harder now though since I'm back in school. That's a very tempting offer, actually. Give me a call if something does happen because I would love to learn more from Grace. She was definitely a great mentor and seemed to fully believe in all of us. Although I heard she's no longer hosting the next cycle?

In front of a big crowd at Chambers Park on Saturday afternoon Dundalk delivered a stunning and ruthless display to see off the challenge of Bangor and capture the All Ireland Junior Cup title for the very first time.
Three first half tries had them firmly in control at 19-0 ahead having played with the elements at the Portadown venue during the first half and while the wind dropped somewhat after half time the Dundalk intensity most certainly didn’t as they cut loose scoring five more tries.
Dundalk returned to a heroes welcome at their Mill Road clubhouse on Saturday night after a display of pure brilliance throughout the afternoon.
Precision, pace and skill from the Louth men from start to finish left Bangor playing second fiddle for long periods.

Adventuring is hazardous not only to the body but also to the mind, to our sense of connection, our ability to function successfully within groups, and even our capacity to relate and communicate our thoughts to those we hope to influence or establish and maintain bonds with. But it takes more than casual adventuring to inflict such damaging change. A weekend outing in the mountains or even a season or a year-long trek abroad may do little worse to our psyche than cause a healthy future ache and longing for more. No, the type of damage (if damage it can be properly called) comes not from too much time away but rather from an excess dedication and application of living in the direction of escape and isolation. The hazard is most acute with those who never gained a satisfactory (from their perspective) foothold in society and the status-quo and who have enough will or personal drive to make a strong break from convention in the direction of their first inclination. If the force of departure is strong enough, their inertia of will may take them on a very distant (though likely circuitous as all orbits are oblique) course away and back from the fraternity of their origin. As such adventurous natures are often also quite inquisitive and probing they may discover startling, unlikely and fantastic “facts” during their travels; experiences sublime and perhaps hardly eligible for compare with the workaday reality from whence the traveler did depart. These experiences cannot help but change the adventurer, making them over in the shape and color of the alien living they have known. If the duration abroad was long enough and the ambition of the traveler quite keen then when we see them again their aspect and carriage must be as one from another world, someone long on the path, who’s communication resembles semaphores from the edge.

The Path of Wildness is an answer and response to a prescribed way of life which may leave some individuals with a sense that their living is little more than a series of pre-determined, step-like episodes between birth and death. The stages of living between these events: childhood, adolescence, adulthood, parenthood and senior are themselves natural and in accord with the needs of the species and most individuals. Many find their satisfaction in living this course and to these individuals I have little or nothing to say. Others though long for something more; something innate, genetic and seemingly calling. Adventure and change can give a degree of satisfaction and relief yet even these may seem too tame. To those who feel drawn to something beyond the entertainment and stimulation of senses I offer a walk along The Path of Wildness. Don’t bother penciling the event in your schedule, preparing a pack with goodies and supplies or even inviting a friend along, for this experience is along the course of your first inclination and you must surely always go alone.
The Path of Wildness
The word Endurance as an Adjective is defined as:

However, I feel the best way to describe how this season has gone is to use the Noun definition of the word: the fact or power of enduring an unpleasant or difficult process or situation without giving way
The 3rd and final race of the 2016 season was held at the postponed Bang Saen Festival of Speed. The championship standings showed the #36 Toyota with such a commanding lead from the first two races that only a small miracle would see TR-Motorsport crowned as champions. However unlikely it may be the scenario was Thomas and the DC5 to finish in first while the Toyota failed to cross the line at all, being the slowest car on the grid - this was tall order!
As with all the endurance races this season the team was beset by mechanical issues.During the extended practice period, gearbox and clutch problems arose resulting in a complete change out of the gearbox. Luckily this rectified the problems and the team were ready for qualifying. Tony Percy, longtime friend of the team and co-driver took the reins of the Honda Integra DC5, with the previous issues still fresh in his mind Tony gently eased the car through qualifying and into a respectable 9th place, which is was an outstanding achievement considering that there were 61 other cars on the track at the same time all vying for a clean lap.
As with all endurance races the 6 hours is split between drivers, for the first stint, Tony pushed the Integra into 7th before the first changeover. The safety car period eventually became a red flagged race and all cars returned to the pits resulting in the team losing any advantage they had gained. Seven cars had been involved in the on-track pileup and although this meant fewer cars in the race and more space on track it took several hours to remove the cars and fix the damaged barriers.
At the restart, Thomas powered his way into 2nd place overall and was somehow setting faster times than the leading Toyota. He consolidated his position up until the next driver change however the gremlins were back playing with the clutch again causing the car to struggle to change gear. Eventually, all the gears except 4th had failed with Tony limping around the circuit. The decision was then made to pit early and see if the issue could be solved. No fix could be applied so it was 4th gear all the way to the chequered flag for the final 1 hour 24 minutes. Ironically the leading Toyota crashed several times and finished dead last but this was still enough to win the championship. TR-Motorsport finished 4th in class,later promoted to 3rd as another team had received a 30 lap penalty for a jump start behind the safety car.
TR-Motorsports final position in the Enduring Endurance Championship was 3rd in class, with just a little bit more luck who knows what might have been……
Super Production Class
Race One
An eventful weekend of racing greeted TR-Motorsport at the final rounds of the Thailand Super Series held at the picturesque Bang Saen Beach Street Circuit. The final event had been postponed from November ’16 to February ’17 due to the passing of the late King. With the postponement came a long gap giving us the perfect opportunity to concentrate on some R & D in the hope of closing the gap to Championship Victor Hideharu Kuroki. After some minor tweaks to the car, a major redesign of the front Air Intake was undertaken which provided very encouraging results after completing several simulations on the Dyno equipment.
Simulations are all well and good, however, it’s on the track where it counts and Thomas fully obliged with the fastest lap around the circuit in official practice. When qualifying began both Thomas and Hideharu were setting fastest lap after fastest lap, nip and tuck all the way. Eventually, Thomas managed to claim a fantastic Pole Position by just one-tenth of a second from Hideharu, being Pole on a tight and twisty circuit is always vital so the race to the first corner could possibly decide the race.
Due to our first gear ratio being longer and the race to the first corner uphill we knew wewould be at a disadvantage. Thomas got off the line perfectly and stormed up the hill defending his line to the left to try and outwit Hideharu who was virtually alongside the ‘Blue Blur’, paint was traded several times before Hideharu backed out and slotted in behind to mount another challenge. The final corner of lap 1 caused a gasp from the TR-Motorsport team and fans as Hideharu once again tried a move, this time on the inside but again showed professionalism by backing off at the right time.
By the middle of lap 2 Thomas had pulled out a small lead and held on for the remainder of the race even breaking the lap record on several occasions, Hideharu pushed Thomas all the way to the chequered flag and saw his 100% record gone as Thomas, 10 years after his first win at Bang Saen came home with the spoils and a much needed 20 points, cementing his second place position in the championship.
Race 2
After the elation of the previous victory had faded, the team of mechanics led by Sven Thummel got to work on the car to check everything over and prepare for Race 2. The team soon spotted an issue with the wishbones as the bushings were damaged and as a precautionary measure these were duly replaced. As with all previous rounds, the top 5 finishers from Race 1 started in reverse order meaning Thomas would start from 5th. As the cars assembled on the grid all looked good and a top 3 position looked more than possible.
As the car left for the warm lap Thomas felt an issue with the steering although not terminal, Thomas made the wisest choice to visit the pits to try and ascertain what the issue was. The team of mechanics could not find anything obvious so the car headed back out on track. People reading this familiar with the rules and regulations of motorsport, will of course know that our little visit to the pits would mean starting at the back of the grid, this was only compounded by the fact that due to a miscommunication with the stewards we forced to wait at the pit lane exit some 600 meters away from the back of the grid!
Regular readers will know that we have had similar issues before and still come out on top. However, today was not going to be one of those days! The first 3 laps of the race went perfectly with Thomas making his way through the field from a lowly 19th to a respectable 10th. The racing gods were smiling on us as a safety car deployment bunched the whole pack back up and with 9 laps to go top 3 was still an outside possibility. In came the safety car down went the throttle and that's where the problems began, a massive loss of power resulted in cars streaming past a limping Thomas. On the pit to car radio turning the electrics on and off to reset the car,was suggested - it worked! But by now Thomas was once again at the back of the grid. For the remaining laps, a valiant Thomas fought back to a very respectful 8th place and again set the fastest lap and broke the track record for the Super Production Class.
After the race, the car was checked over by the official Thailand Super Series scrutineers and as with all races we have competed in this year,they found nothing to report. Although dejected the team were still in good spirits after another great week of motorsport at Bang Saen Beach and look forward to returning in July to compete in the GTC Supercar Class with the new Porsche 911 (997).

Dundalk overwhelm Bangor in All Ireland Final

Bangor’s amazing run in the All Ireland Junior Cup came to an abrupt end when they were comprehensively beaten by Dundalk, eventually losing by 55-5.
Where do you start when trying to relate and absorb the events of Saturday’s final at Chambers Park? Firstly, congratulations to worthy winners Dundalk who nullified the Bangor attack, then went on to produce some stunning plays which racked up no less than 8 tries, each by a different player. For Bangor’s part, they were unable to respond to the intensity of Dundalk’s game, and lacked the cutting edge which their opponents used to great effect.
The day started full of promise, as the strong support from North Down made their way to Chambers Park in Portadown, knowing Bangor would be fielding their best team. Once again, the pundits had Bangor as the underdogs – just as they had done so in the previous three rounds! In confounding the experts earlier, Bangor produced some awesome performances against top quality opposition to get to the final. Dundalk had produced some convincing wins in the early rounds of the competition, but had struggled to get past CIYMS in the semi-final, just managing to squeeze ahead at the second time of asking. However, with a number of key players returning to the side in time for this game, they were now back at full strength and would be a formidable force to contend with.
Having won the toss, captain Jamie Clegg elected to play into the stiff wind in the first half. For the first 5 minutes, Bangor doggedly retained possession and tried to play their way into Dundalk’s half through a series of determined forward moves. However, little ground was made and, when possession was finally lost, the Dundalk back line produced a burst that simply cut through the Bangor defence resulting in an easy touch down under Bangor’s posts for a 7-0 lead.
Bangor stuck to their plan and slowly, but patiently, got their attack moving forward, eventually winning a penalty to the left of Dundalk’s posts, but Mark Widdowson’s kick into the wind drifted just wide of the mark.
The contrast in play between the two teams was becoming clear, with Bangor trying to keep the ball close while Dundalk were throwing it wide. The latter strategy was proving to be the more effective as, with 20 minutes gone, a quick back line move with players looping around resulted in an overlap on the right wing which gave a clear run in to again, score under the posts. A further 9 minutes later, they did it again and, although the Bangor defence had sensed the danger and moved across to cover it, their tackling let them down allowing Dundalk to get over in the right hand corner, taking their lead to 19-0.
By now, Bangor were trying to hang on until half time when they could regroup and come out with the wind at their backs. Dundalk, on the other hand were anxious to press home their advantage and give them a more comfortable lead. To Bangor’s credit, although camped on their own line for lengthy spells, they dug in and managed to hold on until the referee’s half time whistle.
As the teams reappeared from the dressing rooms, it was obvious Bangor were ringing the changes, particularly in the backs. With the wind advantage having lessened considerably, Bangor got the second half underway. It was now Dundalk’s turn to adopt the slow, steady approach, just as Bangor had done earlier. However, their more confident off-loading and support play was, once again, taking play deep into Bangor’s territory. Frustration at not being able to gain possession and take play out of their danger area eventually resulted in a yellow card for Clegg after a succession of penalties. Dundalk kicked the penalty to touch, won their lineout and drove for the line. Although initially held up by the Bangor defence, Dundalk’s repeated drives were eventually rewarded with another converted score, extending their lead to 26-0.
From the touchline, the Bangor faithful had felt that if their players had managed to score first in the second half, they may have been able to mount a fight-back and close the gap to their opponents. As it was, this Dundalk score simply bolstered their confidence and pushed Bangor deeper into trouble. With Bangor still a man down, Dundalk added to the score with a penalty and then another score in the corner. Everything was now working for the Leinster men, as even the difficult touchline conversion into the biting wind successfully split the posts, bringing the score to 36-0.
As the game entered the final quarter, and with Dundalk all but holding the cup, Bangor were now on the ropes. By contrast, the Dundalk players were in almost total control, and were not going to slow down now. In a 10 minute spell, they ran in a further 3 tries, making the scoreline 55-0. By now, any sense of dejection the Bangor supporters may have been feeling was now moved to feelings of sympathy for their players. However, pride was at stake and once again Bangor rallied as the game entered its final minutes. At last, the forwards got within striking distance of the Dundalk line and, although their repeated attacks were repelled, they finally managed to do what their opponents had done so effectively, and quickly passed the ball wide to Davy Charles. Even though they were 55 points ahead, the Dundalk defence made Charles work hard to drive through the tackles and score Bangor’s consolation try, bringing the final score to 55-5.
From Bangor’s point of view, the final score doesn’t tell the whole story of this competition. While the final may have resulted in a sad anti-climax for Bangor, the remarkable journey to get there will be remembered for some time. On the day, Dundalk were by far the better side, and Bangor would have to concede that their game was not up to the usual standard. However, there is no doubt the experience of competing at this level is something to relish and the goal now will be to secure a top four place in the league and try again next year.
Everybody at the club has nothing but the highest respect and praise for what has been achieved this year by not just the 1sts, but all the senior teams, and one poor result isn’t going to change that – the welcome at Upritchard Park for the returning players is testament to that. The latter strategy was proving to be the more effective as, with 20 minutes gone, a quick back line move with players looping around resulted in an overlap on the right wing which gave a clear run in to again, score under the posts. A further 9 minutes later, they did it again and, although the Bangor defence had sensed the danger and moved across to cover it, their tackling let them down allowing Dundalk to get over in the right hand corner, taking their lead to 19-0.
By now, Bangor were trying to hang on until half time when they could regroup and come out with the wind at their backs. Dundalk, on the other hand were anxious to press home their advantage and give them a more comfortable lead. To Bangor’s credit, although camped on their own line for lengthy spells, they dug in and managed to hold on until the referee’s half time whistle.
As the teams reappeared from the dressing rooms, it was obvious Bangor were ringing the changes, particularly in the backs. With the wind advantage having lessened considerably, Bangor got the second half underway. It was now Dundalk’s turn to adopt the slow, steady approach, just as Bangor had done earlier. However, their more confident off-loading and support play was, once again, taking play deep into Bangor’s territory. Frustration at not being able to gain possession and take play out of their danger area eventually resulted in a yellow card for Clegg after a succession of penalties. Dundalk kicked the penalty to touch, won their lineout and drove for the line. Although initially held up by the Bangor defence, Dundalk’s repeated drives were eventually rewarded with another converted score, extending their lead to 26-0.
From the touchline, the Bangor faithful had felt that if their players had managed to score first in the second half, they may have been able to mount a fight-back and close the gap to their opponents. As it was, this Dundalk score simply bolstered their confidence and pushed Bangor deeper into trouble. With Bangor still a man down, Dundalk added to the score with a penalty and then another score in the corner. Everything was now working for the Leinster men, as even the difficult touchline conversion into the biting wind successfully split the posts, bringing the score to 36-0.
As the game entered the final quarter, and with Dundalk all but holding the cup, Bangor were now on the ropes. By contrast, the Dundalk players were in almost total control, and were not going to slow down now. In a 10 minute spell, they ran in a further 3 tries, making the scoreline 55-0. By now, any sense of dejection the Bangor supporters may have been feeling was now moved to feelings of sympathy for their players. However, pride was at stake and once again Bangor rallied as the game entered its final minutes. At last, the forwards got within striking distance of the Dundalk line and, although their repeated attacks were repelled, they finally managed to do what their opponents had done so effectively, and quickly passed the ball wide to Davy Charles. Even though they were 55 points ahead, the Dundalk defence made Charles work hard to drive through the tackles and score Bangor’s consolation try, bringing the final score to 55-5.
From Bangor’s point of view, the final score doesn’t tell the whole story of this competition. While the final may have resulted in a sad anti-climax for Bangor, the remarkable journey to get there will be remembered for some time. On the day, Dundalk were by far the better side, and Bangor would have to concede that their game was not up to the usual standard. However, there is no doubt the experience of competing at this level is something to relish and the goal now will be to secure a top four place in the league and try again next year.
Everybody at the club has nothing but the highest respect and praise for what has been achieved this year by not just the 1sts, but all the senior teams, and one poor result isn’t going to change that – the welcome at Upritchard Park for the returning players is testament to that. With that in mind, the players now need to put this disappointment behind them and provide the best possible response against a struggling Portadown side at home in the league next Saturday.

In front of a big crowd at Chambers Park on Saturday afternoon Dundalk delivered a stunning and ruthless display to see off the challenge of Bangor and capture the All Ireland Junior Cup title for the very first time.
Three first half tries had them firmly in control at 19-0 ahead having played with the elements at the Portadown venue during the first half and while the wind dropped somewhat after half time the Dundalk intensity most certainly didn’t as they cut loose scoring five more tries.
Dundalk returned to a heroes welcome at their Mill Road clubhouse on Saturday night after a display of pure brilliance throughout the afternoon.
Precision, pace and skill from the Louth men from start to finish left Bangor playing second fiddle for long periods.
Because of recent news relating to the development [re-development] of Cherrywood in the South of County Dublin I decided to see if I had any relevant photograph but the earliest usable photographs were taken in July 2013. I do know that I did photograph the area in 2010 and possibly in 2009 but I cannot locate the original photographs.

“The New Luas Extension Has Been Criticised By Commuters Who Cannot Park.”
“When it comes to transport in Dublin there have been two success stories in recent years. The DublinBike scheme is one and the other is the Luas tram system. Last Monday was a beautiful sunny day and after photographing the Dublin Marathon I decided that it would be a good idea to get the Luas to Cherrywood to see if I could take a few photographs. It was explained to me, by a gentleman that I met on the tram, that the land is now tied up in NAMA and as a result it cannot be developed as a park and ride facility. Commuters were turned away from the new Cherrywood terminus on opening day as there were no parking facilities available.”
“Cherrywood is one of Dublin's newest suburbs and as can be seen from my photographs it is partly developed and there are some very large empty spaces and believe it or not there is a shortage of parking spaces. Some time ago a decision was made to extend the Sandyford (Green) Luas line to Cherrywood and construction started in February 2007 and the line became operational this month (October 2010) There are now two Luas stops in Cherrywood: Cherrywood and the terminus, Brides Glen.”
I would suggest that the tram stop at Laughanstown could be described as being in the area.

Hines Ireland has officially started work on the first key phase of construction at Cherrywood in South County Dublin. If all goes well up to 30,000 people will live at Cherrywood by early in the next decade meaning that it will be as large as Bray and even larger than a town such as Athlone.
Brian Moran said, “The upfront delivery of the roads, cycle and pedestrian network and three wonderful parks is a pivotal moment for the Cherrywood project. These will be the green lungs for this modern new town and this not only strikes the right environmental note for Cherrywood to come but it also underpins our commitment to expedite the delivery of the 4,000 modern new homes within the Hines land holding."

Mr. Moran is the Senior Managing Director responsible for developing Hines’ Ireland projects. He established the Hines platform in Ireland which currently has more than €1.2 billion of retail, office and residential assets under management, in addition to a major development pipeline which includes an additional €500 million of retail development and over 4,000 residential units. He rejoined the firm in 2011 having previously worked with Hines in Russia in the 1990's.

Dundalk overwhelm Bangor in All Ireland Final

Bangor’s amazing run in the All Ireland Junior Cup came to an abrupt end when they were comprehensively beaten by Dundalk, eventually losing by 55-5.
Where do you start when trying to relate and absorb the events of Saturday’s final at Chambers Park? Firstly, congratulations to worthy winners Dundalk who nullified the Bangor attack, then went on to produce some stunning plays which racked up no less than 8 tries, each by a different player. For Bangor’s part, they were unable to respond to the intensity of Dundalk’s game, and lacked the cutting edge which their opponents used to great effect.
The day started full of promise, as the strong support from North Down made their way to Chambers Park in Portadown, knowing Bangor would be fielding their best team. Once again, the pundits had Bangor as the underdogs – just as they had done so in the previous three rounds! In confounding the experts earlier, Bangor produced some awesome performances against top quality opposition to get to the final. Dundalk had produced some convincing wins in the early rounds of the competition, but had struggled to get past CIYMS in the semi-final, just managing to squeeze ahead at the second time of asking. However, with a number of key players returning to the side in time for this game, they were now back at full strength and would be a formidable force to contend with.
Having won the toss, captain Jamie Clegg elected to play into the stiff wind in the first half. For the first 5 minutes, Bangor doggedly retained possession and tried to play their way into Dundalk’s half through a series of determined forward moves. However, little ground was made and, when possession was finally lost, the Dundalk back line produced a burst that simply cut through the Bangor defence resulting in an easy touch down under Bangor’s posts for a 7-0 lead.
Bangor stuck to their plan and slowly, but patiently, got their attack moving forward, eventually winning a penalty to the left of Dundalk’s posts, but Mark Widdowson’s kick into the wind drifted just wide of the mark.

The decade was not only labelled the Swinging Sixties because of the fall or relaxation of social taboos, relating to sexism and racism but just as importantly, the revolution of looser lines and shorter skirts. Previously fashion trends had been dictated by and aimed at the wealthy and elite –now the preference of young people became important and teen fashion began.
At the start of the decade, there was still a hangover from the 50’s, women wore elegant, yet formal suits often mimicking style icon- Jacqueline Kennedy. Kennedy popularised many of the styles seen at the beginning of the 60s’s including the pillbox hat, pastel suits with a short boxy jacket and oversized buttons, stiletto heels and simple geometric dresses or shifts. The market was dominated by Parisian designers of expensive haute couture garments. By the late 50’s early 60’s the Parisian couturiers were the dictators of fashion, most noticeably Dior, who’s new look, caused women across the globe to go to extreme lengths to acquire the latest trends. Paris was one of the first places to introduce the trends through its couture shows and the styles trickled down society. Dior represented sophisticated elegance and the concluding style was of the ‘young lady’. Unfortunately Christian Dior never lived to see the demise of haut couture and the rise of ready-to-wear fashion.
Following the 60s revolutionary trend, of course they upturned this rather nostalgic fashion industry on its head. Due to the increasing affluence of post-war Britain, combined with affordable tuition, more youths than ever were able to attend colleges. The influence of the newly educated lower class meant a new fashion movement was no longer the preserve of the elite. The youths of the early 1960’s were the first generation that did not have to contribute their money from after-school jobs to the family finances. Young people rejected the snobbery of couture and the restrictive ways of the post war years. Haut couture and high end fashion were becoming increasingly unpopular- the concept was seen as out-dated. It was then when teens were becoming interested in finding their own fashion trends and began using their disposable income to buy stylish clothes.
The first youth-targeted, clothing stores opened in London on the Kings Road and also in the Carnaby Street area. One of the most influential women of the decade Mary Quant opened her clothing boutique, Bazaar; offering updated traditional styles and an informal shopping experience. She encouraged young people to dress to please themselves and treat fashion as a game. She introduced simple tunic style dresses that rejected the structured tailoring of the fashion establishment. She sold jewellery created by art students in radically new designs, as well as bright tights, new fabric patterns with bold geometric prints and knee high boots.
But most importantly Quant popularised the mini skirt- one of the most iconic items of clothing of the sixties. Her mini skirt was offered to young working women enabling them to run for the bus. Quant quoted “It was the girls on the King’s Road who invented the mini. I was making easy, youthful, simple clothes, in which you could move, in which you could run and jump and we would make them the length the customer wanted. I wore them very short and the customers would say, ‘Shorter, shorter.’” It was versatile for young women to wear, with the basic A-line design flattering all shapes and sizes. Its very simplicity meant it could be dressed up or down. From powerful patterns, to block colours and pop art prints it could be as every day or as daring as the wearer wanted. Real trendsetters experimented with new bold fabrics such as shiny rayon, metallic and PVCS. George Melly quoted “Once the rich, the Establishment set the fashion. Now it is the inexpensive little dress seen in the high street .These girls are alive...looking, listening, ready to try anything new... they represent the whole new spirit” Times were changing rapidly and this was a brand new type of store- the boutique, trendy, cheap and colourful with pop music filling the air, became the place to be and formed the new youth group of the decade “The Mods”.
London was the centre of the Mod subculture- their lifestyles revolved around clubs, drugs, scooters and most importantly, image. The term came from “Modern Jazz” music, which originated from African Americans- this helped Mods disregard any old racial stigma. This was new music at the time and was considered to be non-commercial and the epitome of cool. Mods were formed of predominately working class men insisting on their clothes and shoes being tailored to their style; they adopted a sophisticated sleeker look- wearing garments such as tailor made suits with narrow lapels often worn with wool or cashmere jumpers, thin ties, button-down collar shirts, Chelsea or Beatle boots, loafers or Clarks dessert shoes. They often watched French and Italian art films and read Italian magazines for style inspiration; as well as inspiring them for their mode of transport. They chose to ride Italian style scooters rather than motorbikes mainly to fit in with their smooth sleek appearance, but also their body panels concealed moving parts which made it less likely to stain their clothes with road dust or oil. It wasn’t only males that adopted the mod subculture- model and trend setter, Twiggy, popularised the female mod fashion. By the age of 17, Twiggy was regarded as the first supermodel.
The Mods extreme attention to detail and obsession with style was the complete opposite to their arch rivals, the Rockers. Whereas the Mods were found in central London the Rockers, whose roots came from the Teddy boy gangs, were found in suburban towns and the outer rings of London. Whilst Mods were part of the 60s fashion revolution, Rockers were left out of it. Their liking for the 50s style, Rock music and a rebellious look from a decade ago meant they were outcasts. The rocker subculture was centred on motorbikes and their image reflected this, they tended to slick back their hair with grease, wore black jeans and black leather coats and riding boots- although similar to the style of 50’s teddy boys, they rejected their love for fashion and image. Meanwhile, across the pond in the USA the space program was in full flow, and continuing the revolutionary trend, 1961 saw the first man visit space. The 1960’s was the decade of space exploration sparking vivid imaginings about what the future might be like. Of course fashion was quick to take up these themes. In 1964 Pierre Cardin’s Space-Age collection started the trend. The look included shiny or metallic cloth along with synthetic fabrics such as clear coloured plastics, vinyl and PVC. Simple geometric shapes, Miniskirts, bright colours, A-line silhouettes and coloured short wigs.
The swinging sixties was a time of optimism and belief in the future. It was the generation that freed itself from set rules and traditions and pursued its right to expression. Upbeat and occasionally turbulent, the new mood of freedom and rampant individualism was definitely reflected within fashion.
Audrey Brown and the Commonwealth Games
Audrey Brown, 1913-2005, a University of Birmingham alumna, won a silver medal at the 1936 Berlin Olympic Games. This was the same year as she was awarded a BA Honours degree in Social and Political Science. Her personal papers, held at the Cadbury Research Library, include medals relating to her sporting success at the ‘Jeux Universitaires Internationau’ in Paris in 1937, as well as badges, photographs and newspaper cuttings.
The Commonwealth Games, often referred to as the Friendly Games, were first held in 1930 when Audrey Brown was studying in Birmingham. The Games were known as the ‘British Empire Games’ from 1930 to 1950, the ‘British Empire and Commonwealth Games’ from 1954 to 1966, and the ‘British Commonwealth Games’ from 1970 to 1974. Athletes with disabilities are included as full members of their national teams, making the Commonwealth Games the first fully inclusive international multi-sport event.
The 1970 British Commonwealth Games were held in Edinburgh, the first time they had been held in Scotland. 42 teams were represented with Grenada, Guernsey, Malawi, Swaziland and The Gambia competing in the Games for the first time. Australia won the most gold medals – 36 – with England and Canada following with 27 and 18 respectively.
