Hornsby/Ku-Ring-Gai District conducted a Hazard Reduction around Fiddletown today. The burn was approximately 75 hectares, from all reports the burn was successful. Much of the perimeter was only accessible by 4wd or foot.

Unfortunately 75% had been light by the time we arrived, and most of the activity was mopping up and patrolling.

It was good to actually renew a few friendships from years gone by. It’s great to get out and meet some of our followers. Please feel free to share and tag these photos with family, friends and Brigade members.

To mark the International Day for Disaster Reduction, the UNISDR secretariat is calling on its partners to play a more active role to protect cities against disasters. Many cities have been disrupted this year by disasters: earthquakes in Haiti, Chile and New Zealand; floods and heavy rainfalls in Pakistan, Eastern Europe, Mozambique and other parts of Africa; forest fires in Russia; and volcanic eruptions in Indonesia and Iceland. All have caused huge human suffering and economic damage. Cities have never been so at risk.

A life-sized reconstruction of a living room was hoisted into St Ann’s Square to launch a hard-hitting campaign aimed at cutting burglary across Manchester and one of the region’s top town criers, Barry McQueen, was on hand to help make sure the message was heard across the city.

One in three burglaries happen through an open door or window and the mock-up living room, which was open on two sides, demonstrated how easily a burglar could get in your home if you don’t take simple precautions.

The launch marked the start of the new Think! Lock campaign to encourage residents to lock up all doors and windows every time they leave their homes, no matter how long they’ll be gone.

There has been a general downward trend in the number of crimes involving theft of property over the last decade. This trend continues across the county with last year seeing a 15 per cent reduction in burglary, 19.5 per cent reduction in vehicle crime and 15.5 per cent reduction in robberies. This has meant that there has been 12,376 fewer people falling victim to personal theft crimes between April 2009 and March this year when compared to the previous 12 months.

Around 25,000 households across Manchester will be receiving crime prevention advice including face-to-face visits from members of their local neighbourhood policing team, as well as door hangers containing crime prevention advice and window stickers which will act as a visible deterrent to burglars.

There will also be street banners and bus stop posters reminding people to take these simple measures to cut the risk of burglary:

Lock your windows and doors

If you’re going out or going away, leave lights on a timer

Don’t leave valuables on show

If you can, fit a burglar alarm and use it

Don’t let cold callers into your home

Mark and photograph your valuables

Manchester City Council Deputy Leader, Councillor Jim Battle says: "We are working closely with the police to drive down burglary. These simple measures can help keep our homes safe and secure and reduce the chances of becoming a victim.”

Assistant Chief Constable Terry Sweeney from GMP said: “We made a commitment a year ago through Operation Storm to ensure that thieves in our county were brought to account for their crimes.

“Since then we have targeted them on the streets, in their homes and in their communities 24 hours a day, seven days a week and made significant progress in stopping them spreading their misery in our towns and cities.

“This level of commitment continues and led to 63 raids and the arrest of 256 burglars, robbers and thieves in Manchester during the latest clampdown three weeks ago.

“I can assure law-abiding and law-breaking Mancunians that it does not end here. We will continue to work with our partners to reduce burglary, robbery and vehicle crime and bring offenders to justice over the coming months.”

Associate Minister of Red Tape Reduction Grant Hunter introduced, in Edmonton on Monday, November 15, 2020, legislation that cuts red tape to make life easier for hard-working Albertans and businesses. The associate minister will also table the first Red Tape Reduction annual report. Also pictured is Laura Jones, Executive Vice-President and Chief Strategic Officer, Canadian Federation of Independent Business.

The first annual report on red tape reduction highlights key initiatives that have eased the regulatory burden in Alberta, saving Albertans more than $476 million.

Alberta’s government tabled the first annual red tape reduction report which highlights progress made towards the goal of cutting red tape by one-third. Between May 1, 2019 and June 30, 2020, Alberta’s government cut more than six per cent of red tape, saving job creators both time and money. (photography by Chris Schwarz/Government of Alberta)

The historic Childs Restaurant building is visible as crews work to place sand and restore the beach at Coney Island Friday September 20, 2013.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is placing roughly 600,000 cubic yards of sand at Coney Island to replace sand lost during Hurricane Sandy and also to restore the Coney Island project to its original design profile from when the coastal storm risk reduction project (primarily the beach) was originally constructed in the 1990s. While the beach is a tremendous recreational asset, it's important to note that the engineered beach is designed to act as a buffer and reduce risks to the community from coastal storms like Hurricane Sandy. Consultation day at the Fourth Session of the Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction

Typical American beef is grown on corn farmed with intensive fossil-fuel use, including the application of petroleum-based fertilizers. A researcher at Cornell estimates that growing the feed used to bring a steer up to 1200 lbs requires ~272 gallons of oil. A slightly more conservative estimate puts that at 200 gallons, or just under 5 barrels of oil.

In human scale: instead of eating a 16 oz (0.45 kg) steak, you should sip 21.3 fl oz (0.63 liters) of light sweet crude.

The fourth priority area of the Hyogo Framework for Action – addressing underlying drivers of disaster risk – has proved the most challenging area of implementation for countries around the world.

An innovative Norwegian development shows what can be done with good vision, planning, implementation and ongoing commitment to investing today for a safer tomorrow.

On the site of the former Oslo airport an eco-friendly mixed development is transforming a polluted post-industrial wasteland into an area of parkland, residences and offices that is flood-resilient.

Here, UNISDR goes on a tour of the Fornebu development with landscape architect Simen Gylseth that once completed will host 6,000 residents and 20,000 office and light industrial workers in developments arranged around parkland of 200,000 square metres.

The field trip is part of the European Forum for Disaster Risk Reduction (EFDRR) being held in Oslo and hosted by the Norwegian Directorate for Civil Protection and Emergency Planning, the Chair of the EFDRR. The meeting is co-organized in collaboration with the Council of Europe (EUR-OPA) and UNISDR Europe.

Wasn't exactly what I was going for but it is what it is. I tried a piece of basswood I picked up at an art supply store that was meant for carving, not the printinmaking type of carving. It was a bit of a bear to print from and hard to carve once it started to get saturated with ink. I ended up finishing the print by painting on the last impression of the darkest color rather than carving it. Also, note to self: next time you accidently remove your drawing which was done in pencil before you start carving, it is probably a better idea to redraw it than to wing it.
