In 2006, ActionAid started the Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) through schools project.
We have been working with people in seven different countries which have been affected by disasters such as floods or cyclones.
These countries are: Bangladesh, Nepal, India, Ghana, Kenya, Malawi and Haiti.
As the world heats up scientists predict more extreme weather like floods or droughts. In many countries where ActionAid works people say changes in the weather are already affecting their lives.
Our DRR project aims to help over three million people.
The project uses schools as a base to educate children and the wider community about the risks of disasters and how to protect themselves.

August 1, 2011 - Weather conditions today permitted South Rim fire crews to continue burning piles of woody debris in the vicinity Market Plaza.
The piles were constructed over the winter and early spring as part of a manual thinning, hazardous fuels reduction project intended to create defensible space in the park’s wildland urban interface. The project created a raised and more open tree canopy around the developed areas, as well as reducing dead and down fuels. In the event of a wildfire, these changes in the vegetation structure will inhibit the spread of fire and the likelihood of high-intensity fire behavior.
The burn piles consist of small diameter tree trunks, small branches, twigs and needles removed during thinning and limbing operations. They will be ignited during, or immediately following, periods of precipitation and will be monitored by firefighters until they are completely out.
Park visitors may see fire vehicles and personnel in the vicinity when piles are being burned, and may see open flames or smell smoke. Fire managers will strategically ignite the piles in an effort to keep smoke impacts to a minimum. Coordination with the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality is currently underway. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. These are the three prime tenants of waste reduction so when the garbage collector broke my recycling bin about two months after buying it, what else was there to do but repair it by taping up the cracked corner. (Is this the reuse aspect?) Any way, it has been retaped about four times over the last six years so its life has certainly been extended. So a bit of tape on my blue box gives me a nice warm green feeling.

This picture was originally underexposed and required noise reduction - I'd set the exposure to Shutter Priority for something else (that didn't even work) and forgot to switch it back to Auto.
Still looks full, but I have thinned it out a bit. Doing more shelf thinning in the coming days. Owners are going to show the house so I need to have stuff packed away in boxes. At least I'm getting some of the work done now.

I love meshwork bags! This is a fun pattern, although crocheting the fishnet part is a bit boring. I think it would work very well with scraps of sock yarn as well!
Warning: you need quite a bit of yarn for this one. I'll weigh it when it's finished.
I get headaches (migraines - I've had them all my life) and have found certain ways to help reduce the severity of headaches (which work for me but may not for you if you also have headaches - I'm a compute programmer, not a doctor). Sometimes, if I drink a bottle of milk tea (the sugary kind), it helps to reduce or stop my headaches if I drink it early enough. The bottles in the back are straight, black coffee and also work well but not as fast as the milk tea.
Unfortunately, if I get a headache in the afternoon, I almost never drink any caffeine because of the problems it usually causes in going to sleep.

The objectives for this prescribed burn are two-fold. While prescribed fire is used for habitat restoration on the Refuge, it is also used to reduce hazardous fuel loading. The amount of flammable material (everything from trees, underbrush, to dry grassy fields) that surrounds a fire is referred to as fuel loading. The Deer Park burn unit is located near two communities at wildland fire risk- Frenchglen and Warmsprings. 'The Kellogg’s Reductive Art Exhibition - A Story of Salt and Sugar’ was a unique show featuring artworks made entirely out of salt and sugar. This teapot is a creation by UK artist Gala Bell.
The exhibition had a variety of sugar and salt sculptures, salt sketches and salt animations all created by well-known artists.
