Six years before Stanley Kubrick’s A CLOCKWORK ORANGE, Andy Warhol adapted the Anthony Burgess novel for his classic, black and white Factory film, VINYL. In homage to Warhol, Seattle School will transform the entire Northwest Film Forum building for a unique Factory-style recreation of the film. This grand, live happening restages the film in parts, with simultaneous live performance, filming, and screening in our two cinemas and lobby. Northwest filmmakers Lynn Shelton, Daniel Gildark, Virginia Bogart, Sue Corcoran, Christian Palmer and Kris Kristensen will direct models cum actors in cinema 1. Their footage will be projected live in cinema 2, where the audience intervenes in the creative process and composers (including Rob Millis of Climax Golden Twins) perform an improvised score. In the lobby, VJs (including Jacob Stone of Opticlash and Kris Moon from the Decibel Festival) will merge and edit the video and audio feeds from both cinemas in real time, creating a live finished film projected onto a translucent screen. The audience can move around freely between rooms throughout the evening, witnessing the different stages of the event’s unique filmmaking process. The event ends when the final new interpretation of VINYL is complete.

Sharon Mills Park. This old mill 15 years ago became part of the Washtenaw County, Michigan, parks system, adding a new chapter to its varied history. The first mill, a sawmill, was built here about 1835; later a flour mill occupied the site. In the 1930s, the property was bought and restored by Henry Ford, who used it for a time as part of his Village Industries; this site employed about 15 men who made small parts for cars and trucks. The approach was found unsatisfactory, and for a time a winery occupied the property, before it was acquired by the county for use as a park. It is on the Michigan Historic Registry, which says it is of historic interest principally because the the Ford association with it. Sharon Mills Park is on the River Raisin, a short distance west of the town of Manchester and roughly 30 miles from Ann Arbor, the county seat of Washtenaw County. It is one of several places visited with Flickr friend Steve Brown (sjb4photos) when we spent several days in southern Michigan, mostly going to car shows and museums. We will be going to Michigan again in a few months, and I still have hundreds of photos from 2011 still untouched; working on my photo backlog -- which consists of more than Michigan photos -- has been getting some of my time since our company left Tuesday.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is placing roughly 600,000 cubic yards of sand at Coney Island to replace sand lost during Hurricane Sandy and also to restore the Coney Island project to its original design profile from when the coastal storm risk reduction project (primarily the beach) was originally constructed in the 1990s. While the beach is a tremendous recreational asset, it's important to note that the engineered beach is designed to act as a buffer and reduce risks to the community from coastal storms like Hurricane Sandy. As you can see it works pretty well for most scenes, however it's important to note that's it's certainly not up to the level of something like Lightroom's noise reducer.
However, importantly, you can see that all temperature data is untouched and maintained by the denoiser, which was the entire point of me implementing it this way.

Despite the Chairman's warning, the problem of “camp followers” -as they were known in more polite circles- persisted to the extent that Ashton UDC resolved at its meeting in July 1944 to “take up with the Ministry of Fuel and Power the question of the use of petrol [by local taxis conveying women from and to other districts] late at night. The Council have also decided to express to the Superintendent of the Police their concern regarding the conduct of girls and women in the streets of Ashton, especially after 10pm”.
Of course, the American troops were not wholly innocent in these respects. On 10 June 1944, the Wigan Observer reported the conviction of a mother and daughter in Wigan for “keeping a disorderly house”. 43 American soldiers had been observed entering the premises over a 12-day period commencing 6 May, some of them having to strike matches in order to verify the house number when arriving late at night. In a police raid on 21 May, 5 Americans were encountered with the occupiers and several other women, all in various stages of undress. The mother was sentenced to 3 months' imprisonment, the daughter to 1 month and their co-accused women were placed on probation. A claim that one of the soldiers had “removed his trousers to prevent creasing them” cut little ice with the appeal judge, who upheld the convictions albeit with a reduction in sentence for the daughter.
In his autobiography “Battered Cherub” (Hamish Hamilton, 1982), the late NUM President and Ashtonian Joe Gormley notes, simply, that “the girls had a wonderful time”.
Tuesday morning 03-08-2010 we left for a touristic trip to Amsterdam.
A nice oppertunity was to travel by train, since the railway company NS had send
us a letter with a reduction coupon for a free ticket for the second person
travelling.
We parked the car at the Q-park in Den Bosch, which is close ot the railway
station, bought the tickets and took the train to Amsterdam Central Station via
Utrecht and Amsterdam Amstel.
Almost directly accross the railway station we took a 1 hour channel trip by
Lovers, which gave us a good view of the Amsterdam channels and the history of
Amsterdam.
Back from the Channel trip we walked via Damrak to the Dam and visited the sex
museum and Madame Tussauds, where we saw the wax statues of famous dutch and
international people.
When ending the Madame Tussauds trip we alked to the monument on the Dam where
we sat down and took something to eat and drink.
After this refreshment we walked along the red light district, which is a
touristic actraction of its own.
The return trip from Amsterdam to Den Bosch by train had a different route due
to fire somewhere along the track between Amsterdam and Utrecht, after having a
delay of 25 minutes the train went to Utrecht via Hilversum.
This part of the Trip is Madam Tussauds, of which you find the pictures as well
as a bit of the history of the museum (n Dutch)
Achter de schermen
De manier waarop tegenwoordige wassenbeelden worden gemaakt is nauwelijks
veranderd van hoe Madame Tussaud’s ze zelf in 1790 maakte.
Posseersessie

kleifiguur, maar ook in een later stadium bij het kleuren en kappen van het
beeld. De kleurspecialisten bekijken de kleur van de huid, ogen, tanden en bij
vrouwen de gebruikte make-up. Er is ook een kapster aanwezig die aan de hand van
monsters de juiste kleur van het haar en van de wenkbrauwen bepaalt en, na
toestemming van de persoon, een stukje van het haar afknipt.
Kleien figuur
Gelijktijdig met het kleien figuur (een beeld wordt namelijk eerst helemaal in
klei geboetseerd) worden ogen en tanden zo exact mogelijk nagemaakt. De kleur
van de ogen is zorgvuldig uitgezocht met behulp van een overzicht waarop zich
allerlei kleurencombinaties bevinden. Van het gebit wordt gipsen afdruk gemaakt,
meestal doet de tandarts van de gebeeldhouwde persoon dat.
Mal
Nadat de beeldhouwer met het model van klei gereed is, wordt door een
professionele vormgieter een gipsen mal van het hoofd en de handen gemaakt. In
deze mal wordt hete was gegoten. Als de was is afgekoeld wordt het gips er
voorzichtig afgepeld en is het hoofd klaar om te worden gekleurd.
Het Kapsel
Een team van deskundigen kleurt het wassenhoofd en de handen (dit zijn vaak de
enige delen die van was zijn). Het kapsel namaken is een zeer gedetailleerd en
secuur werkje.
Echt haar wordt gebruikt en letterlijk haartje voor haartje op het hoofd
ingeplant! Als het haar klaar is, wordt het gewassen, geknipt en geföhnd.
Het Lichaam
Van het kleien lichaam wordt eveneens een gipsen mal gemaakt. Deze mal wordt
volgegoten met glasvezel. Het lichaam van een beeld is namelijk uit glasvezel
gevormd. Als dat helemaal van was zou zijn, zou het te zwaar zijn en doorbuigen.
Het beeld is dan klaar om aangekleed te worden. De persoon die geportretteerd is
schenkt meestal kleding aan zijn of haar beeld.
Londen-Amsterdam
Nadat het wassenbeeld voor het laatst is geïnspecteerd, wordt het voor
verzending vanuit Londen naar Amsterdam klaargemaakt. Het beeld wordt met een
speciale chauffeur uit de Tussauds Studios in de auto en per veerboot vervoerd.
Voordat het beeld dan in de attractie wordt geplaatst, worden de haren nog
gestyled en de kleding netjes in gereedheid gebracht. De kosten van een beeld
zijn ongeveer € 85000,-
Het onderhouden van de beelden
Madame Tussaud’s Amsterdam heeft een afdeling Portrait Care waar de beelden
worden onderhouden. Portrait Care houdt ’s morgens vóór bezoekerstijd een
inspectieronde en gaat op zoek naar beelden waar iets aan moet gebeuren. In
Madame Tussaud’s Amsterdam mogen bezoekers de beelden aanraken en van heel
dichtbij bewonderen. Daarbij gebeurt het regelmatig dat iemand met z’n of haar
ring het gezicht iets beschadigd of haren los trekt. Voor kleine reparaties
zoals krasjes, losse haren, en dergelijke, gaat Portrait Care aan de slag. Mocht
er echter iets groots moeten gebeuren zoals een vinger die is afgebroken, dan
moet het beeld worden vervoerd naar Engeland en wordt het gerepareerd in de
Tussauds Studios.
In Amsterdam worden beelden er sowieso regelmatig uitgehaald om ze een
onderhoudsbeurt te geven. Dan gaat de kleding naar de stomerij, worden de haren
met shampoo gewassen en weer in model geföhnd. Ook kan make-up worden bijgewerkt
met verf. Dit wordt op een speciale manier gedaan, namelijk door verf op het
gezicht en de hals te spatten. Dat geeft een heel natuurlijk effect, want een
normale huid is meestal ook vlekkerig. Verder worden brillen en andere sieraden
onzichtbaar maar goed bevestigd aan het beeld, om diefstal tegen te gaan.
Sommige beelden zijn ook extra beveiligd met een alarminstallatie, dus zouden
mensen ze echt willen verplaatsen dan gaat het alarm af.

Frankrijk
1761 Op 7 december 1761 wordt Marie Grosholz, later bekent als Madame Tussaud,
in Straatsburg (Frankrijk) geboren
1770 Marie gaat in de leer bij Dr. Curtius en in 1778 maakt zij haar eerste
wassenbeeld: de beroemde schrijver en filosoof Francois-Marie Arouet Voltaire.
De zuster van Franse koning Lodewijk XVI nodigt Marie uit om in Versailles les
te komen geven als kunstlerares.
1789 Marie wordt terug geroepen naar Parijs om Dr. Curtius te helpen bij het

Night photography has always interested me, and the book is quite inspiring.
I found some really cool raw image processing software from China to do the conversion from raw format to TIFF (STEPOK). I am also trialing another application by the same company to edit photos. Both seem pretty good. Not sure if I will buy them yet or not.

National Parks and Wildlife Service commenced a two day Hazard Reduction burn around Mount Hay in the Blue Mountains.
The burn off is 3100 hectares and will be conducted over Thursday and Friday with the weekend allowed to mop up and black out any remaining spots.
Thursday saw the Southern end of the fire be started, using ground crews and aerial incendiaries. The Northern end will be conducted on Friday.
The burn is a joint effort by National Parks and NSW Rural Fire Service, with 25 NPWS personal and around 20 RFS personal taking part on Thursday.
It is a significant strategic burn in preparation for the future bushfire seasons, allowing fir a buffer zone between the bush and local residences.
NPWS & RFS crews regularly conduct Hazard Reductions together in the off season in order to prepare fro upcoming seasons and to maintain skills.
