Six years before Stanley Kubrick’s A CLOCKWORK ORANGE, Andy Warhol adapted the Anthony Burgess novel for his classic, black and white Factory film, VINYL. In homage to Warhol, Seattle School will transform the entire Northwest Film Forum building for a unique Factory-style recreation of the film. This grand, live happening restages the film in parts, with simultaneous live performance, filming, and screening in our two cinemas and lobby. Northwest filmmakers Lynn Shelton, Daniel Gildark, Virginia Bogart, Sue Corcoran, Christian Palmer and Kris Kristensen will direct models cum actors in cinema 1. Their footage will be projected live in cinema 2, where the audience intervenes in the creative process and composers (including Rob Millis of Climax Golden Twins) perform an improvised score. In the lobby, VJs (including Jacob Stone of Opticlash and Kris Moon from the Decibel Festival) will merge and edit the video and audio feeds from both cinemas in real time, creating a live finished film projected onto a translucent screen. The audience can move around freely between rooms throughout the evening, witnessing the different stages of the event’s unique filmmaking process. The event ends when the final new interpretation of VINYL is complete.

Local governments are being supported in developing local poverty reduction strategies to lift people up, and break the cycle of poverty.

As part of TogetherBC, British Columbia's Poverty Reduction Strategy, the Province is providing $5 million to the Union of British Columbia Municipalities (UBCM) for the Poverty Reduction Planning & Action program. Interested communities can apply for funding to support local initiatives and plans that will help B.C. reduce the overall poverty rate by 25% and the child poverty rate by 50% by 2024.

A life-sized reconstruction of a living room was hoisted into St Ann’s Square to launch a hard-hitting campaign aimed at cutting burglary across Manchester and one of the region’s top town criers, Barry McQueen, was on hand to help make sure the message was heard across the city.

One in three burglaries happen through an open door or window and the mock-up living room, which was open on two sides, demonstrated how easily a burglar could get in your home if you don’t take simple precautions.

The launch marked the start of the new Think! Lock campaign to encourage residents to lock up all doors and windows every time they leave their homes, no matter how long they’ll be gone.

There has been a general downward trend in the number of crimes involving theft of property over the last decade. This trend continues across the county with last year seeing a 15 per cent reduction in burglary, 19.5 per cent reduction in vehicle crime and 15.5 per cent reduction in robberies. This has meant that there has been 12,376 fewer people falling victim to personal theft crimes between April 2009 and March this year when compared to the previous 12 months.

Around 25,000 households across Manchester will be receiving crime prevention advice including face-to-face visits from members of their local neighbourhood policing team, as well as door hangers containing crime prevention advice and window stickers which will act as a visible deterrent to burglars.

There will also be street banners and bus stop posters reminding people to take these simple measures to cut the risk of burglary:

Lock your windows and doors

If you’re going out or going away, leave lights on a timer

Don’t leave valuables on show

If you can, fit a burglar alarm and use it

Don’t let cold callers into your home

Mark and photograph your valuables

Manchester City Council Deputy Leader, Councillor Jim Battle says: "We are working closely with the police to drive down burglary. These simple measures can help keep our homes safe and secure and reduce the chances of becoming a victim.”

Assistant Chief Constable Terry Sweeney from GMP said: “We made a commitment a year ago through Operation Storm to ensure that thieves in our county were brought to account for their crimes.

“Since then we have targeted them on the streets, in their homes and in their communities 24 hours a day, seven days a week and made significant progress in stopping them spreading their misery in our towns and cities.

“This level of commitment continues and led to 63 raids and the arrest of 256 burglars, robbers and thieves in Manchester during the latest clampdown three weeks ago.

“I can assure law-abiding and law-breaking Mancunians that it does not end here. We will continue to work with our partners to reduce burglary, robbery and vehicle crime and bring offenders to justice over the coming months.”

Associate Minister of Red Tape Reduction Grant Hunter introduced, in Edmonton on Monday, November 15, 2020, legislation that cuts red tape to make life easier for hard-working Albertans and businesses. The associate minister will also table the first Red Tape Reduction annual report. Also pictured is Laura Jones, Executive Vice-President and Chief Strategic Officer, Canadian Federation of Independent Business.

The first annual report on red tape reduction highlights key initiatives that have eased the regulatory burden in Alberta, saving Albertans more than $476 million.

Alberta’s government tabled the first annual red tape reduction report which highlights progress made towards the goal of cutting red tape by one-third. Between May 1, 2019 and June 30, 2020, Alberta’s government cut more than six per cent of red tape, saving job creators both time and money. (photography by Chris Schwarz/Government of Alberta)

The Integrated Land, Water Resources and Clean Energy Management for Poverty Reduction Project is supporting the sustainable management and conservation of natural resources, more productive agriculture, reducing human pressure on Volcanoes National Park and reducing greenhouse gas emissions by protecting 1,400 hectares of watersheds, 50km of ravines and rivers, creating a 1,000 hectare buffer zone of Volcanoes National Park, supporting two green model villages, distributing 1,000 improved stoves and 50 biogas digesters, controlling water hyacinth on 60 hectares and creating 1,680 green jobs.

The project is being delivered by Musanze District and is addressing severe erosion caused by deforestation, over cultivation of hillsides and intense rainfall events linked to climate change.

The project started in May 2014 and aims to enhance food and energy security, support climate resilient livelihoods and improve access to renewable energy. Erosion control measures have been introduced to improve agricultural productivity. The project also provides biogas digesters, improved cooking stoves and rainwater harvesting systems to reduce pressure on forest resources and enhance water security. Livelihoods of vulnerable households including women headed households and youth are being strengthened with support for income generating activities. The project is being implemented in Rwaza, Kimonyi, Nkotsi and Shingiro sectors in Musanze District.

The historic Childs Restaurant building is visible as crews work to place sand and restore the beach at Coney Island Friday September 20, 2013.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is placing roughly 600,000 cubic yards of sand at Coney Island to replace sand lost during Hurricane Sandy and also to restore the Coney Island project to its original design profile from when the coastal storm risk reduction project (primarily the beach) was originally constructed in the 1990s. While the beach is a tremendous recreational asset, it's important to note that the engineered beach is designed to act as a buffer and reduce risks to the community from coastal storms like Hurricane Sandy. Typical American beef is grown on corn farmed with intensive fossil-fuel use, including the application of petroleum-based fertilizers. A researcher at Cornell estimates that growing the feed used to bring a steer up to 1200 lbs requires ~272 gallons of oil. A slightly more conservative estimate puts that at 200 gallons, or just under 5 barrels of oil.

In human scale: instead of eating a 16 oz (0.45 kg) steak, you should sip 21.3 fl oz (0.63 liters) of light sweet crude.

Wasn't exactly what I was going for but it is what it is. I tried a piece of basswood I picked up at an art supply store that was meant for carving, not the printinmaking type of carving. It was a bit of a bear to print from and hard to carve once it started to get saturated with ink. I ended up finishing the print by painting on the last impression of the darkest color rather than carving it. Also, note to self: next time you accidently remove your drawing which was done in pencil before you start carving, it is probably a better idea to redraw it than to wing it.

Greater Manchester Police marked its 40th anniversary on April 1 2014 with celebrations across the Force.

GMP’s Chief Constable Sir Peter Fahy talked about the evolution of policing over the years, he said: “In some ways there have been many changes to policing over the past forty years but in other ways it has not changed at all because it's about the relationship with the public and talking to people.

“GMP grew out of borough and city forces that were very close to their communities and we have returned to that with our commitment to neighbourhood policing.

“What has changed is new technology and new ways of committing crime and different social attitudes along with a more diverse community and GMP has developed new specialisms to deal with this.

“GMP now faces the greatest challenge in its history with the spending reductions but will stick true to the principles of policing by consent.”

Looking to the future, the Force has been allocated £40,000 of funding from the Police Crime Commissioner Tony Lloyd to plough into community projects as part of GMP’s Project 40 which will go to continue to build strong relationships with the people of Greater Manchester.

You should call 101, the new national non-emergency number, to report crime and other concerns that do not require an emergency response.

Always call 999 in an emergency, such as when a crime is in progress, violence is being used or threatened or where there is danger to life.

You can also call anonymously with information about crime to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. Crimestoppers is an independent charity who will not want your name, just your information. Your call will not be traced or recorded and you do not have to go to court or give a statement.

If you have any song recommendations for chilling, jamming, dancing, or working out. Let me know!

Thanks to those that have already sent me some! I have the best online friends!
