Koki Beach Park, Maui Hawaii.

We were fortunate that the Outback received good spring rains before our arrival in October. Lots of blooms were showing off brilliant colors.

I have no idea what these are called, but I love the purple against the deep red sands These were blooming along the roadside.

Juniper trunk fence surrounding the Vegetable Gardens at Pipe Spring looking NE. Happy Fence Friday!

Pipe Spring was named by the 1858 Mormon missionary expedition to the Hopi mesas led by Jacob Hamblin. In the 1860s Mormon pioneers from St. George, Utah, led by James M. Whitmore brought cattle to the area, and a large cattle ranching operation was established. In 1866 the Apache, Navajo and Paiute tribes of the region joined the Utes for the Black Hawk War, and, after they raided Pipe Spring, a protective fort was constructed by 1872 over the main spring. The following year the fort and ranch was purchased by Brigham Young for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormon Church). The LDS Bishop of nearby Grafton, Utah, Anson Perry Winsor, was hired to operate the ranch and maintain the fort, soon called Winsor Castle. This isolated outpost served as a way station for people traveling across the Arizona Strip, that part of Arizona separated from the rest of the state by the Grand Canyon. It also served as a refuge for polygamist wives during the 1880s and 1890s. The LDS Church lost ownership of the property through penalties involved in the federal Edmunds-Tucker Act of 1887. -- Courtesy Wikipedia

Jordan 2019 (The Wadi Rum desert valley also known as the Valley of the Moon, is located at 1600 meters above sea level in a mountainous region formed by granite and sandstone. It is the longest wadi in Jordan. The name rum means "high" or "high" in the Aramaic language, and its pronunciation denotes the nearby Arab influence. The highest point of Uadi Rum is Mount Jabal Umm ad Dami, with 1854 meters above sea level.

Wadi Rum has been inhabited since prehistoric times by various cultures, including the Nabataeans, who have left their mark on the petroglyphs. Since 2007, the desert inhabits several Bedouin tribes.

Wadi Rum is known by the British army officer T. E. Lawrence (Lawrence of Arabia), who used it as a base of operations during the Arab Rebellion of 1917-1918. In the Eighties, one of the most spectacular rock formations of Wadi Rum was named The Seven Pillars of Wisdom in honor of the book of the same name by Lawrence, although it has nothing to do with it...)

Sea cave "Boyeeghter Bay, located in the northwest corner of Melmore Head on the Rosguill peninsula got its name from the Irish translation, Bá Íochtair meaning Lower Bay. But the beach, known locally as Murder Hole beach, may have got its name from legend. When Fionn mac Cumhaill killed Goll Mac Morna in revenge for killing his father, it was said to have taken place at a rock, Carraic Ghoill, lying off the townland of Dooey. This gave the name to the entire headland, Headland of Goll or Rossgoill and possibly is also how this beautiful, peaceful beach ended up with such a violent name."

One of six forts at Red Sands, designed by Guy Maunsell, a left other relic from WWII, standing stalwart in the Thames Estuary.

The sea was calm, the sky peppered with cloud and trails, intersecting across the cool autumnal blues.

Worth the boat trip, and the excursion into a place from my past. The tide of memory sweeping me further out to sea.

April 2016

I finally got to visit the famous red beach in Iceland - Rauðasandur, in the Westfjords. I stupidly totally messed up the timing, visiting at high tide, when the amazing patterns of the sandbanks were hidden. As it got dark I had to leave (to avoid the mountain pass in fog and darkness) but stopped to capture a few last shots. The tide was going out a little revealing more red sand. This is an ICM shot and I rather like it.

Barefoot Llewellyn plays with the red sand of this peculiar dune that, following the wind, slowly slowly moves across the white sandy soil of the surrounding landscape without ever mixing. The white spots are poor goats desperately trying to make somewhat a living in that desert area. They hoped we could help them.

On the way back from our trip to the Redsands forts, our Captain kindly waited for PS Waverley to pass. Waverley is the last sea going paddle steamer in the world and she was on the last trip of the season, from Southend to Whitstable, before heading back to her winter berth in Glasgow. As she was a little late leaving Southend she went past us at aound 16 knots, far outpacing the X-Pilot on which we were sailing. A wonderful sight. The red and white flag above her wheelhouse indicates that there is a pilot on board.

Lots more detail when viewed large.

Coastal landscape of Morro Branco, Brazil. The foreground reveals a striking layer of dried mud, cracked by wind exposure on the beach surface — a transient texture shaped by evaporation and aeolian processes. Behind it, stratified sedimentary cliffs display vivid tones of white, beige, and orange, formed by centuries of erosion and deposition. The scene illustrates the dynamic interplay between tropical climate, geological layering, and coastal transformation.
