I love Monument Valley. I could shoot there for a long long time and I look for opportunities to return over and over. This is one of the things that fascinates me so much about it ... the red, red sand and the beautiful patterns it makes. This was taken very early in the am as the shadows were still long and beautiful.

One of the things I love about getting to a sunrise before blue hour is the chance to look around and find other compositions - Catching the ring around the moon over Red Sands at Bass Point is one of those serendipitous moments you get out of bed for.

As part of our trip to the Redsands forts, we saw some colourful shipping including this container ship heading westwards up the Thames Estuary.
Vohburg was built in 2005 in Romania, for German owners and she plies the North Sea. I thought she was worthy of a photograph in the lovely conditions we had that day.

Valley of The Gods is a wonderful piece of earth near Monument Valley. Located north of MV about 40 minutes it is a beautiful lonely little drive. Unlike MV it is little known and both times I have driven through I never saw another car. Though the formations do not equal MV in some respects I find it a beautiful place.

Close to Sossusvlei in Namibia, Deadvlei is a clay pan characterized by dark, dead camel thorn trees contrasted against the white pan floor. The pan was formed when the Tsauchab River flooded and the abundance of water allowed camel thorn trees to grow. The climate changed and the sand dunes encroached on the pan, blocking the river from reaching the area.
The trees are estimated to be approximately 900 years old, however they have not decomposed due to the dry climate.
An amazing place to visit especially for anyone interested in photography; the colours & contrasts are spectacular.
"Haleakalā Sunrise - Otherworldly" by Patti Deters. The view from the top of the Haleakalā volcano is like nothing I'd ever seen. It's a barren yet beautiful landscape that looks like it could be from another planet. At a little over 10,000 feet above sea level, Haleakalā is a huge shield volcano that hasn't erupted in over 200 years. Rising from the Hawaii island of Maui, this mountain is a popular tourist destination for viewing sunrises and sunsets. Equally amazing is the red sand and rock landscape vista that reveals itself as the sun appears each day. Located in what is now Haleakala National Park, it was called "House of the Sun” by early Hawaiians. This is an area in the Riverland of South Australia.
In this particular shot it is a place where the Mallee trees and red soils meet the salty edges of an old evaporation basin.
The shot looks remarkably like a Parrots head and shoulders, hence I included the name psittacines in my title, which is the scientific classification for the Parrot familly.
Many Parrots do live in this area as well.

Took a boat trip with my brother (check out his LCA and supersampler shots) to see the Red Sands Sea Forts.
More information on the Sea Forts on wikipedia and here. Was inspired by doctor boogies amazing set of pictures, and also seing them again on BBC's Coast reminded me how much I wanted to get out there this summer. Got very wet, only slightly seasick, but well worth it.

Years ago I spent over a year out here & even more remote for work.
I got to appreciate the beauty of this ancient land, respect for the seasons, the loudness of its silence, the clarity of the stars, the many creatures that call this home and how we are just grains of sand in time here.
...and the red bull dust that gets into everything.
I always enjoy coming back for a visit and wonder why I don't do it more often. cheers :)
