A Red-whiskered Bulbul clicked in the backyard. They live in thickets, near cultivated areas and gardens, and in big towns. They also like lightly wooded areas. Resident in their range these birds are always welcome due to their friendly nature and lovely song.

The Scarborough Red-necked Grebe has not been reported for a few days so I presume it has left. Or maybe BirdGuides has decided to stop reporting it in case it is making a breeding attempt. Small numbers do occur here in summer, but there have been few breeding attempts, and most have been unsuccessful. To date, the only successful breeding was in the Scottish borders in 2001. This was probably my closest photo of it but I didn't post it as I wasn't sure about the reflections in the water. Its scientific name Podiceps grisegena translates as grey-cheeked arse-foot, and you can see its grey cheeks here. And in case you are wondering, the feet on grebes emanate from the arse region to facilitate their almost wholly aquatic lifestyle. The Red Arrows put on a great show on Saturday, No matter how many times I see them I always get a little tingle and a sense of pride, I wasn't even in the Airforce lol! Still, they are the best of the best and never fail to deliver.

As the song goes, all the colours of the rainbow follow .... "Red, and Yellow and Pink and Green, Orange and Purple and Blue ....."

Today: RED

Located in South Holand in Lisse, near Haarlem, Keukenhof (literally "Kitchen garden" after the Castle it was named after which originally grew herbs and food for the estate) is also known as the Garden of Europe, and is one of the world's largest flower gardens. 7 million flower bulbs are planted annually in the park, which covers nearly 80 acres. The gardens nestle in the heart of the the "Dune and Bulb Region" (Duin- en Bollenstreek), and are open annually from mid-March to mid-May. The best time to view the tulips is usually in April, depending on the weather.

I should have had a lower shutter speed but must have inadvertently hit the dial without realizing it.

Lots of debate about why leaves turn red in the fall...red keeps the leaves warmer when the weather gets cooler; the chemical that makes them red acts as an antioxidant to help get through winter; red attracts more birds so the tree gets pollinated better; or the quality of the soil where the tree is located helps in determining the color (better soil = less red, worse soil = more red). Whatever the reason, they make a great photograph...this definitely is the best season for photography!!

"For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." ~Jeremiah 29:11

This was an extreme macro photo where 28 Images have been stacked to produce a larger depth of field. This was shot with the Laowa 100mm 2:1 macro at 2:1 with 52mm of extension tubes resulting in a final magnification of approx. 2.52X. Photos taken at f/4 with ~0.15mm steps forward between each shot using my DIY automated Macro Rail (Working progress). This is not a perfect shot but I was quite happy with it.

I found this juvenile Red Tail Hawk just a few miles from where I live. I have seen quite a few of these birds in this area over the last few years but they were always too far away to photograph. To be honest, when I took the photograph this guy was too far away to ID and I just figured it was another Red Shoulder. It wasn't until a couple weeks ago when going through past shots that I realized it was actually a Red Tail.

Sometimes the simple pictures seem so easy but I have waited many hours by Red Pandas just in the hope they would wake up and move..... At last!

Geranium Robertianum.

Commonly known as Herb-Robert, Red Robin, Death come quickly, Storksbill, Fox geranium, Stinking Bob, Squinter-pip (Shropshire), Crow's Foot, or (in North America) Roberts Geranium.

In traditional herbalism, Herb Robert was used as a remedy for toothache and nosebleedsand as a vulnerary (used for or useful in healing wounds). The name has been explained as a reference to abbot and herbalist Robert of Molesme. Freshly picked leaves have an odor resembling burning tires when crushed, and if they are rubbed on the body the smell is said to repel mosquitoes. The active ingredients are tannins, a bitter compound called geraniin, and essential oils. It was carried to attract good luck, and due to its analogical association with storks, to enhance fertility.
