reason for choosing to make onion chutney
i viewed this delicious photo by sharon of onion chutney meatloaves flic.kr/p/2p4HycK and thought how tasty the chutney looked, i'll have a go ...
notes
i only had 1kg of onion, the recipe asks for 1kg 500gr
i reduced the sugar accordingly but the chutney wouldn't thicken
late in the cooking i added more sugar, that did the job :)
i didn't have any mustard or muscovado sugar so used replacements - plenty of mustard seeds and a dark brown sugar
i decided to use the handblender at the end of the cooking
as the chutney didn't look very pleasing to the eye
glad i did, suddenly looked like what it should be, onion chutney

The city removed the street/sidewalk repair barricades from in front of this diner, so I was finally able to get the angle of shot I had been seeking.

I got given these too beauties by a local shoot organiser, bit of sod to pluck but they look so healthy and smelled so fresh. Unusually play flesh on the meat, but it still looks and smells great. Nice and easy lighting, underexposed the ambient brick by about two tops, flash high camera left for correct exposure and little silver reflector just to pick out the details in the female feathers.

In my quest to provide real food for my family, we started receiving a weekly box of local organic fruits and vegetables. It has been fun to get new foods that I haven't tried yet or haven't cooked. Last week, two bunches of these colorful carrots were in the box. They were so yummy! the red carrots were sweet and the yellow carrots reminded me of parsnips... with a little less tang. I am hoping we get them again in next week's box.
Today I am thankful for new things that bring me joy.
Happy Cliche Saturday!
Cootie's offers "real food" as opposed to fake food, I guess. Truth is, the name made me think it would be some kind of awful redneck paradise, with nothing but barbecue, and conjured visions of some guy out hunting possum and squirrels to stock his restaurant! I was very wrong! Cootie Brown's has really good food and great service! The teenagers who work there were super friendly and courteous, too! When in Bristol, Tennessee, it's definitely worth a try!

California Oranges on the vine in my best friend's backyard in San Diego, California on April 6, 2007. They are so sweet and juicy!
MORE INFO ON ORANGES:
Oranges originated in southeast Asia, in either India, Vietnam or southern China. The fruit of Citrus sinensis is called sweet orange to distinguish it from Citrus aurantium, the bitter orange. In a number of languages, it is known as a "Chinese apple" (e.g. Dutch Sinaasappel, "China's apple").
While the origin of citrus fruits cannot be precisely identified, researchers believe they began to appear in southeast Asia around 4000BC. From there, they slowly spread to northern Africa mainly through migration and trade. During the period of the Roman Empire, demand by higher ranking members of society and increased trade allowed the fruits to spread to southern Europe.
Citrus spread throughout Europe during the Middle Ages and were then brought to the Americas by Spanish explorers. Worldwide trade of citrus fruits didn't appear until the 1800s and trade in orange juice developed as late as 1940.
Citrus fruits are produced all over the world. According to UNCTAD, in 2004 there were 140 citrus producing countries. Around 70% of the world's total citrus production is grown in the Northern Hemisphere, in particular Brazil, countries around the Mediterranean and the United States.
In the United States, citrus fruits for consumption as fresh fruit are mainly grown in California, Arizona and Texas, while most orange juice and grapefruit is produced in Florida).
