Chris asked Faith the question, she said yes and now the wedding weekend is nearly here. Hooray! I'm finalizing ceremony details including this mosaic which is naturally FEST themed.
OLD 97's - “Question”
She woke from a dream
Her head was on fire
Why was he so nervous?
He took her to the park
She crossed her arms
And lowered her eyelids
Someday, somebody's gonna ask you
A question that you should say "yes" to
Once in your life
Baby, tonight I've got a question for you
She'd had no idea
And started to cry
She said "in a good way"
He took her by the hand
Walked her back home
And they took the long way
Someday, somebody's gonna ask you
The question that you should say "yes" to
Once in your life
Maybe tonight I've got a question for you
I've got a question for you...

For a new constable posted to central London the information you are expected to know can be overwhelming. The fact is that most London policemen do not come from London and their knowledge of London may be somewhat scant, to remedy this all new Police Officers straight from Hendon were told by everybody who was older in service to obtain a 'Nicholsons'. This was the Nicholson's pocket guide to London which was an invaluable mine of information which seemed to become more and more dogeared as the officer retained the information in his head so that he could eventually dispense with it. A very necessary appointment for the London Policeman.See link.

I posed the question the night before, that I wondered if the bells of the Minster would chime all night, and so would they be made silent after, say, eleven? I can now reveal that the bells did chime all night. I would like to say it was kind of re-assuring, but the ringing, not only of the hours but an attractive peal before the hours were chimed, was loud, loud enough to wake me from my slumber on a few occasions.
We arranged to meet Bradey at eight for breakfast, and in an unusual move we had to exit the guesthouse and go in the front door for the breakfast room. It worked, and soon we were tucking into toast, cereal and a huge cup of coffee or two.
Before breakfast, Jools and I walked round the monster, and saw that it opened at nine, so we hoped to load the car and be at the doors at the final stroke of nine so we could hit toe road as soon as we, or rather, I had my shots.
And this is what happened. The car loaded, we walked to the monster to find the door unlocked, but the church deserted. So, I rushed round getting my shots, it is always wonderful to have a building to oneself, but one as grand and as special as Beverley Minster was a rare treat.
----------------------------------------------------------------
Beverley Minster, in Beverley, East Riding of Yorkshire, is a parish church in the Church of England. It is one of the largest parish churches in the UK, larger than one third of all English cathedrals and regarded as a gothic masterpiece by many.
Originally a collegiate church, it was not selected as a bishop's seat during the Dissolution of the Monasteries; nevertheless it survived as a parish church and the chapter house was the only major part of the building to be lost. It is part of the Greater Churches Group and a Grade I listed building.[1] Every year it hosts events in association with local schools. Including the Beverley Minster Primary School Nativity Performance and the Beverley Grammar School Speech Night.
The minster owes its origin and much of its subsequent importance to Saint John of Beverley, who founded a monastery locally around 700 AD and whose bones still lie beneath a plaque in the nave. The institution grew after his death and underwent several rebuildings. After a serious fire in 1188, the subsequent reconstruction was overambitious; the newly heightened central tower collapsed c. 1213 bringing down much of the surrounding church. Work on the present structure began around 1220.
It took 200 years to complete building work but, despite the time scale involved, the whole building has coherent form and detail and is regarded[who?] as one of the finest examples of Perpendicular design, the twin towers of the west front being a superlative example. These formed the inspiration for the design of the present Westminster Abbey.
Saint Thomas Becket of Canterbury, (c. 1118–29 December 1170) was named Provost of Beverley in 1154.
Henry Percy, 4th Earl of Northumberland (1449–1489), was buried in the church after being murdered by the citizens of York in 1489 during the Yorkshire Rebellion over high taxes imposed by King Henry VII.
As with many English churches during the wars of religion in the 16th century, Beverley Minster was not immune to dissension. Church authorities cracked down hard on those they felt were part of the "Popish" conspiracy contrary to Royal decrees. "Among those holding traditional beliefs were three of the clergy at the minster, who were charged with Popish practices in 1567; John Levet was a former member of the college and Richard Levet was presumably his brother. Both Levetts were suspended from the priesthood for keeping prohibited equipment and books and when restored were ordered not to minister in Beverley or its neighbourhood."[2]
In the 18th century the present central tower replaced an original lantern tower that was in danger of collapse. This central tower now houses the largest surviving treadwheel crane in England, which is used when raising building materials to a workshop located in the roof. A distinctive feature of both the north and south transepts is the presence of rose windows, and a White Rose of York, with ten equal parts. Daily tours to the crane and rose windows are available to the general public, subject to other church commitments.
Features of the interior include columns of Purbeck Marble, stiff-leaf carving and the tomb of Lady Eleanor Percy, dating from around 1340 and covered with a richly-decorated canopy, regarded[who?] as one of the best surviving examples of Gothic art. A total of 68 16th century misericords are located in the quire of the minster and nearby is a sanctuary or frith stool dating back to Anglo-Saxon times.
The misericords were probably carved by the Ripon school of carvers and bear a strong family resemblance to those at Manchester Cathedral and Ripon Cathedral.
The church contains one of the few remaining Frith Stools (also known as Frid Stools, meaning "peace chairs") in England. Anyone wanting to claim sanctuary from the law would sit in the chair. The chair dates from Saxon times before 1066.[3][4][5][6]
The organ is mounted above a richly carved wooden screen dating from the late 19th century. There is a staircase in the north aisle which would have been used in collegiate times to gain access from and to the chapter house.
Improvements to the choir were made during the 16th and 18th centuries and medieval glass, which was shattered by a storm in 1608, was meticulously collected and installed in the East Window in 1725. The Thornton family, great craftsmen of the early 18th century, were responsible for the font cover and the west door. Another notable feature is the series of carvings of musicians which adorn the nave.

Beverley Minster is the Parish Church of St. John and St. Martin
John, bishop of York, founded a monastery on the site where Beverley Minster stands.
John died in 721 and his body was buried in a chapel of the Saxon church.
He was canonised in 1037.
The present church was built around his tomb.
Building work began in 1220 and was completed in 1425.
Throughout the Middle Ages miracles which took place at his tomb attracted pilgrims from far and wide.
Today the church is still a place of pilgrimage for visitors. It also continues to be a place of prayer and worship at the heart of the community.

- www.20minutes.fr/paris/diaporama-7346-photo-854066-100-an... - www.ladepeche.fr/article/2010/11/02/940025-140-ans-en-arc... dreux-par-pierlouim.over-blog.com/article-chamards-1962-9... missionphoto.datar.gouv.fr/fr/photographe/7639/serie/7695...

The French landscape architect Jacques Simon's love for nature first developed on his father's tree farm and then deepened when he traveled as a young man to Sweden and then Canada, where he attended art school in Montreal while working as a lumberjack. Between 1957 and 1959, Simon studied at the École Nationale de Horticulture. He has since become an important link in the renewal of French landscape architecture, combining the Anglo-Saxon and Scandinavian garden cultures he absorbed in his travels with classic Latin structures. He works as often as possible in situ, and does not shy away from driving the tractor himself.

HOW DO YOU BEAT IT? Keep reading....
stress - 4 out of 5 people* suffer.
in their daily lives..
* Gallup Poll 2008.
.
.
We have all suffered from it at one time or another. ..
We’re often told that we have to avoid it —but how ..
can we—living in this day and age? Work, family,.
school, money, health, relationships and world events ..
all contribute to it..
.
We all know we have to “cope” with stress. The ..
question becomes not how do we avoid stress, but how ..
do we increase our ability to successfully deal with ..
it?.
.
People are labelled with hundreds of different ..
“disorders”. .
.
But these labels never really explain anything—and ..
they don’t give a solution. Unpredictable drugs are ..
prescribed to cure “chemical imbalances” in the ..
brain. Some believe that the mind is a physical ..
organ—a theory with no scientific basis. There’s been ..
a discovery about the human mind that is so simple, ..
so incredible and so powerful … and you can use it in ..
your life, right now. .
.
It’s called Dianetics..
.
The fact is, there is a single source of all your ..
problems, stress, unhappiness and self-doubt. .
.
It’s called the reactive mind—the hidden part of your ..
mind that stores all painful experiences, then uses ..
them against you. .
.
Dianetics gets rid of the reactive mind. It is the ..
only thing that does. .
.
Dianetics can bring lasting improvement to people all ..
over the world. .
.
Don’t live with insecurity, negative thoughts, ..
depressions, irrational behavior. .
.
Use Dianetics and get rid of your reactive mind..
.
.
.
The Basic Theory….
the analytical mind.
the reactive mind.
.
TWO PARTS OF THE MIND.
.
L. Ron Hubbard discovered that your true potential ..
lies in the mind that you use every day. This is the ..
analytical mind. It’s called analytical because it.
analyzes information. He compared the analytical mind ..
to a computer that perfectly records and stores ..
information. This is the mind that you use every day ..
to think, and to make decisions in life. Every day ..
memories are recorded in the analytical mind, much ..
like files are recorded in the computer. If you ask ..
the analytical mind a question, it always gives you ..
the right answer. If you ask it, for instance, for ..
your high school graduation, it will give you a ..
picture of the graduation, who was present, the ..
sounds, colors, the position of your body and ..
hundreds of other perceptions..
Except in moments of emotional or physical pain, the ..
analytical mind is always working and recording ..
mental image pictures. You use all of this stored ..
information to make decisions in life and achieve ..
what you want. The more you use your analytical mind, ..
the better you do in life. .
.
WHERE IS THE ERROR?.
If the analytical mind is so perfect, and always ..
comes up with the right answers, where is the error?.
.
Why do you wake up one day feeling like you can take ..
on the world, and the next day wish you’d never ..
gotten out of bed?.
.
Why do you hurt the people you love the most?.
.
Why do you feel compelled to do things you know are ..
bad for you?.
.
Where does irrational behavior come from?.
.
Well, you can relax. It doesn’t come from you..
.
PHYSICAL AND EMOTIONAL PAIN.
.
You can’t seem to let go of the physical and ..
emotional pain in your life, because it’s locked up ..
in the second part of the mind—the reactive mind..
If the analytical mind is like a perfect computer, ..
then the reactive mind is like a computer virus that ..
has infected it. The reactive mind is completely.
illogical, completely irrational and completely ..
useless. It kicks into action every time you’re under ..
stress, every time you’re in pain, or sick. It ..
records moments of physical pain and unconsciousness, ..
such as accidents or operations, and moments of ..
severe emotional pain and loss, such as deaths, ..
divorces or.
business failures. Once these painful incidents are ..
recorded in your reactive mind, they have the power ..
to control your emotions, your thoughts and your.
actions—against your own will and your better ..
judgment..
.
The reactive mind is the single source of all of the ..
pain and suffering in your life. It is the single ..
source of all irrationality..
So what is in your reactive mind? Maybe the agonizing ..
end of a once wonderful relationship? A serious ..
setback in your career? A major illness?.
A car accident? Or perhaps childhood trauma that ..
affects you even today. It was L. Ron Hubbard’s ..
discovery that all the painful experiences of your ..
life are contained in the reactive mind. And while ..
everyone has a reactive mind, the contents of yours ..
are personal to you. .
.
THE STATE OF CLEAR.
Without a reactive mind, you will be able to think ..
clearly, act rationally and be yourself again. This ..
state is called Clear. Tens of thousands of people ..
are.
Clears. You can be too. Your dreams are within reach. ..
You just need to get rid of the things that are ..
holding you back. You need to get rid of your ..
reactive.
mind with Dianetics technology..

DIANETICS GETS RESULTS!.
.
Do the Hubbard® Dianetics® Seminar.
.
THE PAIN I FELT BEFORE WE STARTED, IT’S GONE!.
“Thank you for the opportunity to.
do this seminar. I learned I can talk.
to others about events, feelings and.
opinions and bare (if you will) facts that.
I didn’t even think about before. Just.
for the record, the pain I felt before we.
started, it’s gone!” BK.
.
I AM ACHIEVING MY OPTIMUM PERFORMANCE MENTALLY.
“I could feel the stress just like when the.
incident happened. When I was asked.
to come back I felt like I had to actually.
come back. It was like going back in time..
Dianetics works like they say it does. I am.
achieving my optimum performance.
mentally. Before today, I had no idea.
what Dianetics could do!” RL.
.
IT HELPS YOU PEEL OFF THE GHOSTS OF THE PAST.
“I feel hope and I see light ahead after.
doing the seminar. The Dianetics.
auditing helps you actually peel off.
the ghosts of the past and now I am.
feeling much lighter than before I.
came in. You can peel off that onion,.
the negative feelings, from the past.
and you can definitely move up. I.
can’t wait to do Dianetics again.” FG.
.
THE HANDS-ON EXPERIENCE HELPED ME HELP MYSELF AND ..
OTHERS..
“I started Dianetics about 3 months.
ago but never wanted to actually do.
the auditing. I was concerned as to.
whether or not I would be a good.
auditor because I didn’t have any.
experience. Then I got an invitation for.
this seminar. I had to force myself to.
come. Now, after having gone through.
it, I am very glad I made the decision.
to be here. The hands-on experience.
helped me to take the next step into.
helping myself and others.” SR.
.
I GOT RID OF THE NEGATIVE PARTS FROM THE REACTIVE ..
MIND.
“This was my first time doing Dianetics..
I wasn’t prepared to get to the point of.
understanding the process of auditing..
However, when I got through it I.
really felt I experienced feelings that.
I wasn’t aware of. I re-experienced.
again something that happened back.
in my life and actually got rid of the.
negative parts of it from the reactive.
mind. It was a great feeling.” LL.
.
THE CONSTANT ANXIETY IS TOTALLY GONE—VANISHED!.
“So far I have learned more in the last.
two days than I have in the last several.
years. My head feels as if a weight has.
been lifted from the top of it. I have.
so much energy that I feel like a new.
person. I used to think there was ‘no.
way to get rid of my constant anxiety’.
and yet I realized that after my first.
time through the Dianetics procedure.
it was totally gone—vanished.” MC.
.
THE NIGHTMARES AND NERVOUSNESS EXPLODED INTO ..
NOTHINGNESS.
“I came to the seminar not sure if Dianetics.
could help even though I had hope.
from reading the book. Since my brother.
died in a bad accident, I’d had persistent.
nightmares and was very nervous. This.
was affecting my work and health. Well,.
in the Dianetics all the suppressed grief.
came to the surface and I was able to.
really talk about the accident for the.
first time! Afterwards I just felt filled with.
tremendous love for my brother! What’s.
more, the nightmares and nervousness.
exploded into nothingness, and now I.
feel this great calmness. I’m back on top.
and excited about life again.” JJ.
gets results.

DIANETICS IS AN ADVENTURE. It is an exploration into ..
Terra.
Incognita, the human mind, that vast and hitherto ..
unknown.
realm half an inch back of our foreheads..
The discoveries and developments which made the.
formulation of Dianetics possible occupied many years ..
of.
exact research and careful testing. This was ..
exploration; it was.

are sufficiently.
mapped for you to voyage in safety into your own mind ..

your full inherent potential, which is not, we now ..

those Dark and Unknown.
Fears which came in nightmares as a child, to know ..
where your moments.
of pain and pleasure lay. There is much which an ..
individual does not know.
about himself, about his parents, about his ..

will find may astonish you, for the most important ..
data of your life may be.
not memory, but engrams* in the hidden depths of your ..

but only destructive..
You will find many reasons why you “cannot get well” ..
and you will know at.
length, when you find the dictating lines in the ..
engrams, how amusing those.
reasons are, especially to you..
Dianetics is no solemn adventure. For all that it has ..
to do with suffering and.
loss, its end is always laughter—so foolish, so ..

2011 HangOut Music Festival (pink pony section)
Holga 120N / Kodak Ektar 100 - double exposure
Ayr Bosatsu looks down from his perch atop the tree - four of the six crocodiles missing, the other two fighting amongst themselves with entrails dangling from their mouths like tennis laces. "Gentlemen." Nodding his head down to them, he'd lean moreso onto the trees highest branch, almost falling from it. "These big bastards won't lemme go."
Lunar Frequency aims her shotgun att he crocodiles. "You couldn't outrun them!?" she questioned. Stop loafing.
Kuroyu Takakura runs over and spots ayr up a tree and skids to a stop sliding into some wattery swamp muck on her butt looking up to him then laughs wondering the hell happened to the other crocs. looking back to lunar some waiting for her to shoot up some croc meat with that gun. getting up and brushing herself off.
Amara rubbed her forehead, her gaze moving from the crocs to Ayr. “That’s what ya get for bombing the damn things…should have just stuck to rabbits.” She started splashing about in the water to see if one of them would try coming in her direction.
Kuroyu Takakura slow turns death in her eyes turning to stare Amara down at the mention of rabbits. Twitching slightly. Ayr would pay for the sacrifice he made Kuro go through.
Ayr Bosatsu shrugs and kept leaning into the dried out branch. "I was going to but I figured this would be more interesting. For both parties no less." Smiling to Mara he'd shrug, "Where else can I play with big explosions. And in all fairness, i didn't throw any -at- them. But ..by sheer luck I ended up hitting one of their nests. Seems I'm unlucky these days." Drummed his finger osn the wood, looking down at them
Brekka Nightfire also aims her bolter at one's head carefully, "Ticked them off right good, did you" She'd giggle, pulling the trigger and launching a study bolt at oness braincase.
Lunar Frequency raises her shotgun and cautions everyone. "Cover your ears." she said before firing off a nickel plated slug at one of the crocodiles, blasting a fist sized hole through it. She aims at the second one.
Kuroyu Takakura 's tail slowly swishes bck and fourth in the shallow water as she watched ayr get saved by brekka and lunar. whiping her hands off on her jeans. and whiping her face off too while shes at it. she was probably going to have to catch more rabbits not to replace what she lost to the corcs.
Amara hissed at the sound of the shotgun, even with her ears covered. She backed up as one of the crocs eased her way. “Can we not kill them all? I’d like to eat croc meat in the future thanks.” The crocodile hissed, likely pissed off along with the others at the loss of a nest. “C’mon…over here…” she muttered, like the thing even understood the provocation. Amara wasn’t about to wrestle here, but if she got close enough to strike its head with her right arm, there’d be one more knocked out croc in the swamp.
Ayr Bosatsu watches them battle the giant reptiles. "Well, this is more than I've seen. I got some meat though, the bags full." Pointing across the way to the bag readily sliding into the water he'd nod, folding his arms lazily. "You guys get what you needed?" Swinging one leg over from the branch he'd dangle down, not realizing that another one of them still yet breathed.
Brekka Nightfire shrugs, "How do you suggest we knock that one out, mmm?" She'd look at it oddly, "Shall we make Lunar bop it on the head with her gun.... " She snickers softly, "may work." Lookin up to Ayr, "you really are enjoying this aren't you!"
Lunar Frequency watches the Crocodiles attempt to escape. "I don't think that'll work.. crocs are more resilient than that." She says lowering her weapon. "If you’re gonna do something do it quick!"
Kuroyu Takakura frowns a bit drooping her ears. She was so proud of her kill but had nothing left to show for it. and couldnt enjoy eating it. Her tail tapping against the water she stood around and waited for ayr's butt to be saved. Watching the croc advance on them being the big badass it was. kuro looked at lunar. Then the shield, then lunar.. the shield.. "Lunar could perform.. Riot control on it..." she says smirking a bit.
Amara threw her bag off, not wanting the mushrooms to get wet. “Not all of them Ayr.” She charged the crocodile, leaping and landing on its rough back. “Just injure them so they move away. Ayr can jump, can’t he?!” She was getting more frantic as she tried to talk and punch the croc’s lights out at the same time. Its tail thrashed about wildly in attempts to knock her off. Amara managed to clock the reptile square on the back of the head before getting thrown off, hitting the mud hard. "Oww..."
Ayr Bosatsu watches her heroics, figuring now would be a good time to let go of the tree. Before he'd even contemplated the thought he'd fallen down onto the Croc too - landing on its back almost atop Amara with a crash, "Heng. Oh Snap! He's pissed off now!" Half getting up and half being thrust off from him, he'd get flung towards the others, with a more than jovial skip in his feet. "Let's, uh, do the whole - escaping thing now, yeah?" Rushing over to grab the almost sinking bag he'd throw them all a thumbs up, "MISSION COMPREET. EXSERRENT."
Kuroyu Takakura saw Ayr come flying her way and ninja sidesteps out of a sticky situation and looks to lunar a moment before turning to get onto the land looking to amara. Kuro wasnt about to start running until she knew everyone was moving out and not bing left behind. or killed or something.
Lunar Frequency slings her rifle and walks over to give Amara a hand so they could get away. They got the food after all right? I don't feel like gutting a croc.. that’s nasty work.
Brekka Nightfire keeps her bolter on the "hostiles" carefully, "Okay. Move out then.. Oh my.... they may have more friends anyway," She start to back up, letting everyone move to safety as she watched the sitch, "Ya.. we got it..! Now mooove!"
Amara limped to her feet with Lunar’s help. “Retreating…great idea. Brilliant even.” Her pride and most of her lower back were bruised but otherwise a successful and eventful run.
Ayr Bosatsu points across the swamp, "to the den!" Punctuating his expression with a batman esque fadeout, "Drl-rl-rl-rl-nnn!" Looking over his shoulder at the tree, he'd throw the pissed off beast a salute before executing his exit strategy.
Alec Ross, Senior Innovation Advisor for Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, preparing for an interview on TVNZ's CloseUp ahead of Project (R)evolution.
The Project [R]evolution Digital and Social Media Conference offers a unique opportunity for business, government and media managers to glean insights, ask questions and mix with some of the leading players in the field.
One of the keynote speakers:
Alec Ross
Senior Advisor for Innovation to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
Alec Ross serves as Senior Advisor for Innovation in the Office of Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. In this role, Alec is tasked with maximizing the potential of technology in service of America’s diplomatic and development goals.
Before that appointment, Alec worked on the Obama-Biden Presidential Transition Team and served as Convener for Obama for America's Technology, Media & Telecommunications Policy Committee.
In 2000, Alec Ross and three colleagues co-founded One Economy, a global non-profit that uses innovative approaches to deliver the power of technology and information about education, jobs, health care and other vital issues to low-income people. During his eight years at One Economy, it grew from a team of four people working in a basement to the world's largest digital divide organization, with programs on four continents.
Power to every citizen
To me “digital revolution” can be defined as the massive shift in power that has taken place from hierarchies to citizens and networks of citizens as a result of powerful digital technologies.
What this means in practical terms is that everyday citizens have power today that they did not have as recently as five years ago. Anybody with a smart phone now has the kind of global reach that was once reserved for governments and large media companies. This shifting power has disrupted commerce, communication and governance.
I see this “digital revolution” as being overwhelmingly positive. Some of the disruption it has caused (and will cause in the future) is negative, but this has been far outweighed by the ability of people to connect and engage with the world and with the marketplace in ways that were previously unimaginable. I think about my own experience as a school teacher in an impoverished community. When I was a teacher, the only educational resource my students had beyond my own knowledge were a set of tattered, 30-year old textbooks. Today, that same classroom is equipped with an internet connection that can deliver world-class educational resources directly to the students that most need them. While there is no replacement for a good teacher, our students should not have to suffer with out-of-date and substandard educational resources. With the digital revolution, that no longer needs to be the case.
Another Keynote speaker:
Emily Banks
Associate managing editor for Mashable
Emily Banks is responsible for organizing and overseeing Mashable‘s growing editorial operations, including assigning, editing and publishing stories, as well as sharing them to Mashable's social accounts. She is also responsible for coordinating with partners on video and syndicated content. She joined Mashable‘s New York team in October 2010. Mashable is well known as the largest independent news source dedicated to covering digital culture, social media and technology.
Some of Emily’s recent engagements include "Social Media 101" for New York Women in Communications, "The New Face of Social Good: How to Make Your Own Social Media Magic!" and "Challenging Conventional Wisdom of Social Media".
Abstract: Social media and the newsroom: the Revolution of the Newsroom
Without question, social media has changed the pace of news; how and where it breaks and who breaks it. How does this change our trust in media organisations, journalists as individuals and news-makers? As we remove the layer of authority provided by news organisations, by placing the news directly in the hands of journalists on social media, how do -- or should -- our readers approach the news? This talk will discuss tools for verifying news through social media, cases of misinformation caused by the rapid nature of breaking news on social and the ethical questions involved in reporting in this new age.

One of the largest and most obvious opponent of the barrier that separates Israel from Palestine is the one pictured here.
Artists tagged on it the US logo that is onto items from the United States Agency for International Development, a government organization with a goal of administering civilian foreign aid -- there is also a "Made in the USA" marking as well as the slogan, "Question your leaders" found above the logo.
The graffiti shows the walls' opponents how they feel about the US getting involved and actually funding a majority of the barrier.
Below the logo, in red, white and blue is that the US is "Partners with Israel in ethnic cleansing/apartheid in Palestine." Very strong words indeed.

She was a beauty--a gold 45 goddess for sure! A Gold 45 Goddess exalts the archetypal form of Athena--the Greek Goddess of wisdom, warfare, strategy, heroic endeavour, handicrafts and reason. A Gold 45 Goddess guards the beauty of dx4/dt=ic and embodies 45SURF's motto "Virtus, Honoris, et Actio Pro Veritas, Amor, et Bellus, (Strength, Honor, and Action for Truth, Love, and Beauty," and she stands ready to inspire and guide you along your epic, heroic journey into art and mythology. It is Athena who descends to call Telemachus to Adventure in the first book of Homer's Odyssey--to man up, find news of his true father Odysseus, and rid his home of the false suitors, and too, it is Athena who descends in the first book of Homer's Iliad, to calm the Rage of Achilles who is about to draw his sword so as to slay his commander who just seized Achilles' prize, thusly robbing Achilles of his Honor--the higher prize Achilles fought for. And now Athena descends once again, assuming the form of a Gold 45 Goddess, to inspire you along your epic journey of heroic endeavour.

For the past year, I have posted shots of Kent churches on Twitter than on a churchcrawling group on FB, and in the course of that year, I have come to realise that some churches I recorded better than others, and some of the early one, were mostly dreadful wide angle shots.
So, one by one, I plan to go back and reshoot them.
St Mary was one. It was closed on All Hallow's Eve last year, but on Saturday last month, we dropped off some prints to be framed in the town, and a short walk along Strand Street is St Mary.
It was open for an art shot, but that was OK, as I wanted to snap the memorials and details.

An extraordinary barn of a church - one of two in the town cared for by The Churches Conservation Trust. That it was a large Norman church is without question - see the responds at the west end of the nave. Like the other two churches in Sandwich, St Mary's probably also had a central tower, the collapse of which (like St Peter's) caused havoc to the building. Rebuilding here took a rather rare form with the building losing its south arcade; having a new north arcade built of wood; and a new roof to cover the whole! By the 20th century the church was surplus to requirements and was threatened with demolition. However local supporters, encouraged by the doyen of ecclesiologists, Ivor Bulmer-Thomas, saved it. Now used for concerts it is open to visitors and has much of interest. In the north aisle are 18th century pews saved from Gopsall Hall in Leicestershire. The chancel contains a rare banner stave locker for the poles used to carry banners in medieval street processions. Nearby is an example of two pieces of stone being joined together with a dowel made from animal bone. The glass in the east window is scratched with the names of the glaziers who have repaired it on numerous occasions!

-------------------------------------------
THE town of Sandwich is situated on the north-east confines of this county, about two miles from the sea, and adjoining to the harbour of its own name, through which the river Stour flows northward into the sea at Pepperness. It is one of the principal cinque ports, the liberty of which extends over it, and it is within the jurisdiction of the justices of its own corporation.
Sandwich had in antient time several members appertaining to it, (fn. 1) called the antient members of the port of Sandwich; these were Fordwich, Reculver, Sarre, Stonar, and Deal; but in the later charters, the members mentioned are Fordwich incorporated, and the non-corporated members of Deal, Walmer, Ramsgate, Stonar, Sarre, all in this county, and Brightlingsea, in Sussex; but of late years, Deal, Walmer, and Stonar, have been taken from it; Deal, by having been in 1699 incorporated with the charter of a separate jurisdiction, in the bounds of which Walmer is included; and Stonar having been, by a late decision of the court of king's bench in 1773, adjudged to be within the jurisdiction of the county at large.
The first origin of this port was owing to the decay of that of Richborough, as will be further noticed hereafter. It was at first called Lundenwic, from its being the entrance to the port of London, for so it was, on the sea coast, and it retained this name until the supplanting of the Saxons by the Danes, when it acquired from its sandy situation a new name, being from thenceforward called Sandwic, in old Latin, Sabulovicum, that is, the sandy town, and in process of time, by the change of language, Sandwich.
Where this town now stands, is supposed, in the time of the Romans, and before the decay of the haven, or Portus Rutupinus, to have been covered with that water, which formed the bay of it, which was so large that it is said to have extended far beyond this place, on the one side almost to Ramsgate cliffs, and on the other near five miles in width, over the whole of that flat of land, on which Stonar and Sandwich too, were afterwards built, and extending from thence up to the æstuary, which then flowed up between the Isle of Thanet and the main land of this county.
During the time of the Saxons, the haven and port of Richborough, the most frequented of any in this part of Britain, began to decay, and swarve up, the sea by degrees entirely deserting it at this place, but still leaving sufficient to form a large and commodious one at Sandwich, which in process of time, became in like manner, the usual resort for shipping, and arose a Flourishing harbour in its stead; from which time the Saxon fleets, as well as those of the Danes, are said by the historians of those times, to sail for the port of Sandwich; and there to lie at different times, and no further mention is made of that of Richborough, which being thus destroyed, Sandwich became the port of general resort; which, as well as the building of this town, seems to have taken place, however, some while after the establishment of the Saxons in Britain, and the first time that is found of the name of Sandwich being mentioned and occurring as a port, is in the life of St. Wilfred, archbishop of York, written by Eddius Stephanus; in which it is said, he and his company, prosper in portum Sandwich, atque suaviter pervenerunt, happily and pleasantly arrived in the harbour of Sandwich, which happened about the year 665, or 666, some what more than 200 years after the arrival of the Saxons in Britain. During the time of the Danes insesting this kingdom, several of their principal transactions happened at this place, (fn. 2) and the port of it became so much frequented, that the author of queen Emma's life stiles it the most noted of all the English ports; Sandwich qui est omnium Anglorum portuum famosissimus.
FROM THE TIME of the origin of the town of Sandwich, the property of it was vested in the several kings who reigned over this country, and continued so till king Ethelred, in the year 979, gave it, as the lands of his inheritance, to Christ-church, in Canterbury, free from all secular service and fiscal tribute, except the repelling invasions, and the repairing of bridges and castles. (fn. 3) After which king Canute, having obtained the kingdom, finished the building of this town, and having all parts and places in the realm at his disposal, as coming to the possession of it by conquest, by his charter in the year 1023, gave, or rather restored the port of Sandwich, with the profits of the water of it, on both sides of the stream, for the support of that church, and the sustenance of the monks there.
Soon after this, the town of Sandwich increased greatly in size and inhabitants, and on account of the commodity and use of its haven, and the service done by the shipping belonging to it, was of such estimation, that it was made one of the principal cinque ports; and in king Edward the Confessor's days it contained three hundred and seven houses, and was an hundred within itself; and it continued increasing, as appears by the description of it, in the survey of Domesday, taken in the 15th year of the Conqueror's reign, anno 1080, in which it is thus entered, under the title of the lands of the archbishop:
Sandwice lies in its own proper hundred. This borough the archbishop holds, and it is of the clothing of the monks, and yields the like service to the king as Dover; and this the men of that borough testify, that before king Edward gave the same to the Holy Trinity, it paid to the king fisteen pounds. At the time of King Edward's death it was not put to ferme. When the archbishop received it, it paid forty pounds of ferme, and forty thousand herrings to the food of the monks. In the year in which this description was made, Sanuuic paid fifty pounds of ferme, & Herrings as above. In the time of king Edward the Confessor there were there three hundred and seven mansions tenanted, now there are seventy six more, that is together three hundred and eighty three.
And under the title of the bishop of Baieux's lands, as follows, under the description of the manor of Gollesberge:
In Estrei hundred, in Sandunic, the archbishop has thirty two houses, with plats of land belonging to this manor,(viz. Gollesberge) and they pay forty-two shil lings and eight pence, and Adeluuold has one yoke, which is worth ten shillings.
These houses, with all the liberties which the bishop of Baieux had in Sandwich, had been given by him to Christ-church, in Canterbury, and confirmed to it in the year 1075, by his brother the Conqueror. (fn. 4)
Afterwards king Henry II. granted to the monks the full enjoyment of all those liberties and customs in Sandwich, which they had in the time of king Henry his grandfather, that is, the port and toll, and all maritime customs in this port, on both sides of the water, that is, from Eadburgate unto Merksflete, and the small boat to ferry across it, and that no one should have any right there except them and their servants.
The town, by these continued privileges, and the advantages it derived from the great resort to the port, increased much in wealth and number of inhabitants; and notwithstanding, in the year 1217, anno 2 king Henry III. great part of the town was burnt by the French, yet the damage seems soon to have been recompenced by the savors bestowed on it by the several kings, in consideration of the services it had continually afforded, in the shipping of this port, to the nation. The first example of royal favor, being shewn by the last-mentioned king, was in his 11th year, who not only confirmed the customs before granted, but added the further grant of a market to this town and port, (fn. 5) and in his 13th year granted the custom of taking twopence for each cask of wine received into it.
After which, the prior and convent of Christ-church, in the 18th year of King Edward I. gave up in exchange for other lands elsewhere, to his queen Eleanor, all their rights, possessions, and privileges here, excepting their houses and keys, and a free passage in the
haven, in the small boat, called the vere boat, (fn. 6) and free liberty for themselves and their tenants to buy and sell toll free, which the king confirmed that year; and as a favor to the town, he placed the staple for wool in it for some time.
The exception above-mentioned, was afterwards found to be so very prejudicial, as well as inconvenient, that king Edward III. in his 38th year, gave them other lands in Essex, in exchange for all their rights, privileges, and possessions, in this town and port. After which king Richard II. in his first year, removed the staple for wool from Queenborough, where it had been for some time, hither.
During the whole of this period from the time of the conquest, this port continued the general rendezvous of the royal sleets, and was as constantly visted by the several monarchs, who frequently embarked and returned again hither from France; the consequence of which was, that the town became so flourishing, that it had increased to between eight and nine hundred houses inhabited, divided into three parishes; and there were of good and able mariners, belonging to the navy of it, above the number of 1500; so that when there was occasion at any time, the mayors of it, on the receipt of the king's letters, furnished, at the town's charges, to the seas, fifteen sail of armed ships of war, which were of such continued annoyance to the French, that they in return made it a constant object of their revenge. Accordingly, in the 16th year of king Henry VI. they landed here and plundered the greatest part of the inhabitants, as they did again in the 35th year of it; but but this not answering the whole of their purpose, Charles VIII. king of France, to destroy it entirely, sent hither four thousand men, who landing in the night, after a long and bloody conflict gained possession of the town, and having wasted it with fire and sword, slew the greatest part of the inhabitants; and to add to these misfortunes it was again ransacked by the earl of Warwick, in the same reign.
To preserve the town from such disasters in future, king Edward IV. new walled, ditched, and fortifield it with bulwarks, and gave besides, for the support of them, one hundred pounds yearly out of the customhouse here; which, together with the industry and efforts of the merchants, who frequented this haven, the goodness of which, in any storm or contrary wind, when they were in danger from the breakers, or the Goodwin Sands, afforded them a safe retreat; in a very short time restored it again to a flourishing state, infomuch, that before the end of that reign, the clear yearly receipt of the customs here to that king, amounted to above the sum of 16 or 17,000l. (fn. 7) and the town had ninety five ships belonging to it, and above fifteen hundred sailors.
But this sunshine of prosperity lasted no long time afterwards, for in king Henry VII.'s time, the river Stour, or as it was at this place antiently called, the Wantsume, continued to decay so fast, as to leave on each side at low water, a considerable quantity of salts, which induced cardinal archbishop Moreton, who had most part of the adjoining lands belonging to his bishopric, for his own private advantage, to inclose and wall them in, near and about Sarre; which example was followed from time to time, by several owners of the lands adjoining, by which means the water was deprived of its usual course, and the haven felt the loss of it by a hasty decay. Notwithstanding which, so late as the first year of king Richard III. ships failed up this haven as high as Richborough, for that year, as ap pears by the corporation books of Sandwich, the mayor ordered a Spanish ship, lying on the outside of Richborough, to be removed. (fn. 8)
"Leland, who wrote in the reign of Henry VIII. gives the following description of Sandwich, as it was in his time. "Sandwich, on the farther side of the ryver of Sture, is neatly welle walled, where the town stonddeth most in jeopardy of enemies. The residew of the town is diched and mudde waulled. There be yn the town iiii principal gates, iii paroche chyrches, of the which sum suppose that St. Maries was sumtyme a nunnery. Ther is a place of White Freres, and an hospistal withowt the town, fyrst ordened for maryners desesid and hurt. There is a place where monkes of Christ-church did resort, when they were lords of the towne. The caryke that was sonke in the haven, in pope Paulus tyme, did much hurt to the haven and gether a great bank. The grounde self from Sandwich to the heaven, and inward to the land, is caullid Sanded bay".
The sinking of this great ship of pope Paul IV. in the very mouth of the haven, by which the waters had not their free course as before, from the sand and mud gathering round about it, together with the innings of the lands on each side the stream, had such a fatal effect towards the decay of the haven, that in the time of king Edward VI. it was in a manner destroyed and lost, and the navy and mariners dwindled to almost nothing, and the houses then inhabited in this town did not exceed two hundred, the inhabitants of which were greatly impoverished; the yearly customs of the town, by reason of the insufficiency of the haven, were so desicient, that there was scarcely enough arising from it to satisfy the customer his fee. This occasioned two several commissions to be granted, one in the 2d year of that reign, and another in the 2d year of queen Eli zabeth, to examine the state of the haven, and make a return of it; in consequence of the first of which, a new cut was begun by one John Rogers, which, however, was soon left in an untinished state, though there are evident traces of what was done towards making this canal still remaining, on the grounds between the town and Sandowne castle; and in consequence of the second, other representations and reports were made, one of which was, that the intended cut would be useless, and of no good effect.
Whether these different reports where the occasion that no further progress was made towards this work, and the restoration of this haven, or the very great expence it was estimated at, and the great difficulty of raising so large a sum, being 10,000l which the queen at that time could no ways spare, but so it was, that nothing further was done in it.
¶The haven being thus abandoned by the queen, and becoming almost useless, excepting to vessels of the small burthen before mentioned, the town itself would before long have become impoverished and fallen wholly to decay, had it not been most singularly preserved, and raised again, in some measure, to great wealth and prosperity, occasioned by the persecution for religion in Brabant and Flanders, which communicated to all the Protestant parts of Europe, the paper, silk, woollen, and other valuable manufactures of Flanders and France, almost peculiar at that time to those countries, and till then, in vain attempted elsewhere; the manufacturers of them came in bodies up to London, and afterwards chose their situations, with great judgment, distributing themselves, with the queen's licence, through England, so as not to interfere too much with one another. The workers in sayes, baize, and flannel in particular, fixed themselves here, at Sandwich, at the mouth of a haven, by which they might have an easy communication with the metropolis, and other parts of this kingdom, and afforded them like wife an easy export to the continent. These manufacturers applied accordingly to the queen, for her protection and licence; for which purpose, in the third year of her reign, she caused letters patent to be passed, directed to the mayor, &c. to give liberty to such of them, as should be approved of by the archbishop, and bishop of London, to inhabit here for the purpose of exercising those manufactures, which had not been used before in England, or for shishing in the seas, not exceeding the number of twenty-five house holders, accounting to every household not above twelve persons, and there to exercise their trade, and have as many servants as were necessary for carrying them on, not exceeding the number above mentioned; these immediately repaired to Sandwich, to the number, men, women, and children, of four hundred and six persons; of which, eight only were masters in the trade. A body of gardeners likewife discovered the nature of the soil about Sandwich to be exceedingly favourable to the growth of all esculent plants, and fixed themselves here, to the great advantage of this town, by the increase of inhabitants, the employment of the poor, and the money which circulated; the landholders like wife had the great advantage of their rents being considerably increased, and the money paid by the town and neighbourhood for vegetables, instead of being sent from hence for the purchase of them, remained within the bounds of it. The vegetables grew here in great perfection, but much of them was conveyed at an easy expence, by water carriage, to London, and from thence dispersed over different parts of the kingdom.
These strangers, by their industry and prudent conduct, notwithstanding the obstructions they met with, from the jealousy of the native tradesmen, and the avarice of the corporation, very soon rose to a flourishing condition.
There were formerly THREE PAROCHIAL CHURCHES in this town, and a church or chapel likewise, supposed by some to have been parochial, dedicated to St. Jacob, which has been long since demolished; but the three former churches, being those of St. Mary, St. Peter, and St. Clement, Still remain; an account of all which will be given separately.
ST. MARY'S CHURCH stands in a low situation in Strand street, on the northern part of the town. The original church, built in the time of the Saxons, is said to have been demolished by the Danes, and to have been afterwards rebuilt by queen Emma, which building was burnt down by the French, and it was not long afterwards again rebuilt; notwithstanding which, it appears to have become dilapidated and in a most ruinous state in the time of king Henry VI. for in the 2d year of that reign, anno 1448, part of the steeple fell, in consequence of which it underwent a thorough repair, and then consisted of two isles and the nave; the latter was terminated by the high chancel, and the south isle by St. Laurence's chancel. It however, fell down again on April 25, 1667, and brought down with it most of the church; the western wall, portions of the south isle and its chancel only remaining; and though the church itself was soon afterwards rebuilt, as at present, yet it does not appear that any steeple was built till the year 1718, when the present low one was raised upon the south porch, and one bell put up in it. Before this, there were five small bells, which about the year 1639, had been formed out of three larger ones; the above five bells were sold, for the faculty had been obtained in 1669, to fell the useless timber and the bells, towards the rebuilding of the church, and they were sold, as it is said, to the parish of Eleham.
In an antient bead-roll of this church, there is mention made of John and William Condy, the first beginners of the foundation of the chantry of that name in this church; of Thomas Loueryk and his wife, who founded the chapel of our Lady, at the east head of it; and of the three windows of the north side of the church; of Thomas Elys and Margaret his wife, and Sir Thomas Rolling, vicar of this church, of whose goods was made the west window of it, and who made the vicarage of the parish more than it was before; and besides these, of several other benefactors to the windows and other parts of it. And there were divers other gifts made to this church, for its reparation, and for obits, and other religious services performed in it, as appears by the evidences belonging to it.
The inventory of the silver and jewels, belonging to the church before the reformation, sufficiently shew the costliness of the utensils belonging to it, and the riches of it. The silver, according to the inventory made of them, amounting to 724 ounces; and the habits of the ministers to officiate in it, the linen and books, were answerable to the rest belonging to it.
The present church of St. Mary consists of a north isle, and the nave, at the end of which is the chancel, which has an ascent of three steps on each side; between which entrances are the mayor's seat and other pews. The altar piece, table, and rails, are of wainscot and very ornamental. The sont is at the west end of the nave, it is a stone bason, having eight faces changed alternately with plain shields and roses, in quaterfoils; on the shaft are the letters cw. II. RS. DE. IC. POD. 1662.
In this church are numbers of monuments and inscriptions, all which are printed in Mr. Boys's Collections, P. 319, the whole too numerous to mention here, but among others at the west end of the nave, are memorials of the Smiths and Verriers. In the south space are memorials for the Petleys and for the Whites. In the middle space, on an old stone, are the remains of a cross story, resting on a dog or lion, and the remains of an inscription with this date, I. M. CCC. XXX. In the north isle are three grave-stones, on a rise above the pavement, with inscriptions shewing, that underneath is a vault, in which lie many of the family of Hayward, formerly mayors of this town; arms, Argent, on a pale, sable, three crescents of the field, In the chancel is a large stone, robbed of its brasses, which formerly commerated the deaths of Roger Manwood and his family; the place where it lies was formerly St. Laurence chancel. In the chancel is a monument of stone much defaced; on it are the figures of a manand woman kneeling, in a praying posture, for Abraham Rutton, formerly mayor, and Susan his wife, by whom he had seven sons and six daughters. He died in 1608; and for his descendant the Rev. John Rutton, obt. 1763, rector of this parish. Against the south wall, is a handsome monument of marble, with these arms, Argent, five chevronels, sable, and per pale, azure and gules, a lion rampant, argent; and an inscription for several of the family of Hougham. Against the same wall a tablet, for Mary, wife of Joseph Stewart, esq. obt. 1775; arms, Argent, a lion rampant, gules, over all, a bend raguled, or. Over the south door, a marble monument for Richard Solly, gent. thrice mayor, obt. 1731; and Anna his wife, daughter of John Crickett, gent, by whom he had ten sons and three daughters; arms, Azure, a chevron, party per pale, or, and gules, between three soles, naient, argent. At the west end of the nave is an altar tomb, with an inscription, shewing, that in a vault underneath, lie several of the Cricketts; another altar tomb, with an inscription, for several of the Nowells; arms, Three covered cups. By the gallery stairs, on an altar tomb, an inscription for Tho. Danson, preacher, of this town, who died 1764; on a raised monument of brick, an inscription, for several of the name of Jordan; this stands close before, and hides the altar part of a monument, under an arch in the north wall, to the memory of Sir William Loverick, of Ash, and dame Emma his wife, the daughter of Sir John Septvans, of that parish, who are said to have been the principal repairers, or builders of this church, after it had been burnt by the French, and were buried in king Henry IV.'s reign; on an adjoining tomb an inscription for the Maundys.
There are stones, pointing out the entrances into the vaults of Solly and Stewart, and there are inscriptions on a board, commemorating the benefactions of John Dekewer, esq. Solomon Hougham, gent. Sir Henry Furnese, bart. and Mr. Peter Jarvis.
Several names appear on the stones, on the outside of the east and north walls of the chancel. Sir Edward Ringely, of Knolton, was buried in Jesus chapel, in this church, on the left side of the altar. In the 35th of king Henry VIII. William, lord Clinton, is said to have been interred under a gilded arch in the south wall of this church, which arch was walled up in king Edward VI.'s reign, but it was visible some time afterwards in the church yard, perhaps it may be the same projectioin that now appears there, on the south side of the chancel. William Condie, who founded the chantry, afterwards called by his name, in this church, was likewife interred, together with his wife, in the south isle of the old church, near the lord Clinton's tomb; but there is nothing now to point out precisely the situation of their remains, nor those of Thomas Manwood, gent. who died in king Henry VIII.'s time and was buried under the belfry. Stephen Perot was buried likewise in this church in 1570.
There are several altar tombs in the church-yard, one of which is for the family of Dekewer; arms, Vert, on a cross, engrailed, or, five fleurs de lis, sable; in the first and fourth quarters, a caltrop, argent; in the second and third quarters, a lion rampant, of the last.
An anchoress had her cell at the east end of this church in the 20th year of king Henry VIII.
At a small distance south-west of St. Mary's church, was a church or chapel, dedicated to St. facob, supposed by many to have been a parochial church; there is nothing lest now to point out the situation of the building, the cemetery remains and is used occasionally as a burial place, for the use of St. Mary's parish. This church-yard seems to have got into lay hands at the suppression, for in 1578, it was enfeoffed by Edward Wood, to certain persons, for the necessary uses of the parish. The trust was renewed in 1604 and 1649. At the south-west corner was an hermitage, the residence of an hermit. The last hermit in it was John Steward, in king Henry VIII.'s reign, who was afterwards vicar of St. Mary's church, whose duty it was to minister to strangers and the poor, to bury the dead, and pray for the people in the chapel, which was destroyed, as well as others of the like sort, in the beginning of king Edward VI.'s reign. Great part of this building was standing at the latter end of Edward VI.'s reign; there was in it a brotherhood of St. Catherine, consisting of both brothers and sisters, which was benesitted by the will of John Wynchelse, of Sandwich. It appears that this church or chapel was under the management of the officers of St. Mary's parish, and that the building had been repaired in the years 1445 and 1478.
The church of St. Mary is a vicarage, the patronage of which has ever been part of the possessions of the archdeaconry of Canterbury, to whom the appropriation of the church likewise formerly belonged; it did so in the 8th year of king Richard II. anno 1384, when on the taxation of the spiritualities and temporalities ecclesiastic, in this diocese, the church of St. Mary's appropriated to the archdeacon, was valued at eight pounds, and the vicarage was valued at only four pounds, and on account of the smallness of it, was not taxed to the tenth. (fn. 47) The vicarage is valued in the king's books, in king Henry VIII.'s reign, at 8l. 1s. since which time, and it should seem during the reign of queen Elizabeth, the great tithes, or appropriate parsonage of this church, were given up by the archdeacon to the vicarage, so that the vicar has been since intitled to both great and small tithes within the bounds of this parish, which induced several of the incumbents to stile themselves rectors, but certainly wrong, for it is still a vicarage, the vicars of which are entitled to the receipt and possession of the great tithes, by grant from the appropriator.
¶In 1588 here were 385 communicants, and it was valued at forty pounds per annum. In 1640 here were the same number of communicants, and it was valued at sixty-eight pounds. It is now a discharged living, of the clear yearly value of forty pounds. It has been augmented by the governors of queen Anne's bounty, the greater part of the money from which has been laid out in the purchase of marsh land in Wood. nesborough. At present the vicar receives the tithes of about eighty-four acres of land. There were great disputes formerly, between the appropriators of Eastry and the vicars of St. Mary's, respecting the tithes of a small district of land called Puttock's downe; but the decisions were constantly against the vicars of St. Mary's, and the tithes now belong to Word, a chapel of ease to Eastry.
Besides the ordinary small tithes, the vicar of this parish, as well as the incumbents of the two other parishes in Sandwich, collect from every house a certain sum, under the denomination of dues; this payment is said to be a composition for all the house, gardens, barns, and stables, according to custom, since the 12th year of queen Elizabeth; and the vicar of St. Mary's receives besides, 6s. 8d. annually, under the denomination of tithe of the old Crane.
In 1776 there were one hundred and sixty-eight houses in this parish, and six hundred and fourteen inhabitants; and the rents of it were in 1787, according to the pound rate, at rack rents towards the poor, upwards of 3,500l. per annum.

Dad was asked a lot of questions. It was a blast sharing information with the boys who listen to every word. One of the joys of being a parent.
L-R Peggy Nash at her post NDP Candidates Debate party, with Cheri DiNovo, MPP for Parkdale-High Park Toronto © Linda Dawn Hammond / IndyFoto.com 2012. January 18, '12.
I visited 4 of the after debate parties on the NDP pub crawl. choosing those whom believe to be the top contenders in this candidates race.
First on my list was Nathan Cullen's full capacity event at the Three Spot. Decidedly a younger crowd, all enthusiastic to meet the man who I believe gained the most from his exposure at the Toronto debate. He entered as an unknown candidate to many, and from the post-debate chatter I heard, left several impressed and willing to give him serious consideration. Nathan is a dynamic and charismatic speaker, and offered a decisively left leaning but inclusive direction for the party. Excellent Quebec French, surprising for a candidate from Toronto who now resides in northern BC.
Next on the agenda was Brian Topp at Bar Neon. I confess to being surprised to find him in such a trendy, buzzing venue, but he appeared to be enjoying himself, engaged in discussion with some youthful NDP supporters. When I questioned him about his position on the tar sands issue, he asked me to write to him with my questions and promised that he would reply personally and in depth. Which struck me as a sincere response, considering the late hour and various people pressing him for attention.
Mulcair's was upstairs at Duffy's and packed. It was the only after party I attended which offered the attraction of a live band- the amazing Heather Morgan among the talent. To be fair, by the time I arrived (post speech *), many who remained were there to support the band and not necessarily the politician. Mulcair made a point of NOT being photographed holding a drink- the sign of a seasoned politician, and I don't believe the glass he put down held water, (though I can't verify this and honestly don't care either way.) Other candidates were however less cautious, which speaks volumes about their relative inexperience in dealing with the media and public opinion. If one were to judge a politician by the bar chosen to host his "party", Duffy's clientele were older, tired and less edgy. As were many of the crowd, it appeared. Mulcair strikes me as the conservative choice- but then, this may give him a better chance of wooing disenchanted Liberals into the NDP fold (Wasn't he one himself?). Another indication is that he's managed to convince the upscale French riding of Outremont (Montreal) to vote for him. An ability to woo Quebec is an important consideration for any future NDP leader who wishes to step into Layton's shoes, and Mulcair's fluency in French is excellent and only matched by Topp. Mulcair may be the pragmatic decision. A last note on Duffy's the bar- TEN bucks for a Magner's??? To be fair, they offered a $3. special on beer that night... but as a cider drinker, that's pricing beyond greed and I won't be returning any time soon.
I finally made it to Peggy Nash's party at Ciro’s around 1 am. My worry that I might have missed her was unfounded. There she was, gracious and articulate as always, surrounded by her many faithful supporters. Andrew Cash showed up even later than I, and when I left to catch the last subway, she was still gamely holding court.

Who says the NDP can’t party hard?
As soon as Wednesday night’s NDP leadership debate was done, four candidates hosted afterparties along Bloor Street West. We investigated them all.
BY: Steve Kupferman
Subsequent to Wednesday’s NDP leadership debate at the Bloor Collegiate Institute, the eight candidates for Jack Layton’s former position were criticized for being too much in agreement on the issues at hand. However, once the debate wrapped up, they had no choice but to divide and conquer.
Finding no venue big enough to hold the debate’s 600 attendees, four of the candidates scheduled after-debate parties at different bars within a half-kilometre of each other on Bloor Street West. Yes: four bars, all within walking distance. There was only one reasonable thing to do: an NDP bar crawl.
Having investigated all four parties, The Grid hereby presents our NDP party rating guide:
Candidate: Peggy Nash
Venue: Ciro’s, 1316 Bloor Street West
holding his post-debate shindig. If it’s possible to divine anything about the candidates’ respective chances from the sizes of their parties alone, Dewar is in serious trouble. Stella was about half the size of Ciro’s and it still wasn’t quite packed. It was a dark, dingy little hangout where the air smelled like curry. There was no music.
“I am supporting Paul Dewar,” said Kari Sackney, who was standing by the door with a drink in her hand. “I think that he is unequivocally the best candidate for the job. I think that he is a bridge builder.” She conceded that she probably would be going to some of the other parties, “in the spirit of democracy.”
Party Rating: 5/10
Rationale: This party felt very pro-forma. If Paul Dewar is serious about being the leader of a sorta-socialist workingman’s political party, he needs to find supporters who do regular-guy things like, for instance, SHOTS!
Candidate: Thomas Mulcair
Venue: Duffy’s, 1238 Bloor Street West
Thomas Mulcair, the Quebecois MP, decided to hold his party in the dingiest of the four bars. The cavernous interior, ordinarily a refuge for local barflies, was packed with supporters. It was a slightly older crowd, to judge by faces alone. Mulcair worked the room with his wife, slowly sipping water from a plastic cup. Alone at a bar stool, a lonely leather-jacketed regular downed a beer with his back turned to the throng.
Party Rating: 7/10
Rationale: Mulcair has a very statesmanlike bearing and doesn’t seem like the type of guy who enjoys dive bars, but meeting him in Duffy’s and trying to have a dignified conversation with him over by the ATM was hilarious and I enjoyed it.
Candidate: Brian Topp
Venue: Bar Neon, 1226 Bloor Street West
The party for Brian Topp, a political strategist now trying to make the leap into policymaking, was happening at Bar Neon, a tiny hole in the wall that practically drips with hipster cool. The walls are bare brick and partly covered in murals, and the counter is stocked with obscure and very fancy brands of liquor.
The crowd was mostly young and stylish, and they were drinking hard—suspiciously hard. After some questioning, it was clear that many of them weren’t there out of fealty to the candidate.
Gavin, a 30-ish man who withheld his last name, was there for a birthday party that was happening simultaneously with the campaign event. “The NDP has taken over every bar in this neighbourhood,” he said. His group had come to Bar Neon because it seemed emptiest.
“Maybe you can judge a candidate by the size of their bar crowd,” he suggested. Brian Topp had best hope that’s not the case.
Party Rating: 9/10
Rationale: Topp can claim no credit for the awesomeness of his post-debate bash, because most of the fun was being had by people who weren’t his supporters. He was literally backed into a corner, by the stairway that led to the bathroom. Seemed like a really nice guy, though.
Hey NDP leadership candidate, how late are you planning on staying out tonight?
Peggy Nash: “I’ll be staying out… [pause] as long as I’m having fun.”
Paul Dewar: “Not too late, because I’m up early tomorrow.”
Thomas Mulcair: “We’re going to work seven days this week. We get up very early in the morning and we finish quite late, so I think that we’re just about to pack it in.”
Brian Topp: “My wife will decide that. We’ve got some events tomorrow morning, but I’m going to stay for a little while and see if we get more people coming in who want to meet. One of the things I want to do is meet them.”

Hey!
You totally missed the after party for Nathan Cullen.
It was right next door at the Three Spot.
The place was packed and erupted when Nathan arrived.
Listen, I organized it and was nervous about how many folks would come out.
I was as surprised as anyone that we had such a big crowd. At first, I genuinely thought that it was pretty equal mix of locals and NDPers. But, as the night moved on and Nathan mingled it was apparent that is was about 80/20 NDPers/locals.
Our event was more organic and less campaign-y. We had loads of folks come through from other after parties that ended up sticking around.
The Davenport NDP Association led by Andrew Cash started their pub crawl there and Craig Scott newly minted nominee for Toronto Danforth dropped by around midnight.
Over the course of the night I’d say between 70-80 folks came through.

By 1:00am the crowd was thinning out. It was a big success for a underdog candidate from Northern BC!
Very sorry that you weren’t able to make it or able to cover.
I imagine it would have got a 7 or 8/10 in your rating system. ;)
Hopefully you can make a note of it on web version of story.

Overwhelming response to Tune Hotel klia2 since 9 May opening
SEPANG, 5 June 2014 – Over 200 winners descended upon the brand new Tune Hotel klia2 and enjoyed a fun-filled evening as the hotel organised a ‘Pyjama Party’ to celebrate its recent opening last weekend.
Ten individual winners of the Tune Hotels’ #RoomerHasIt Facebook campaign were able to invite family and friends to enjoy a further 10 complimentary double rooms for a sleepover at Tune Hotel klia2 and join in for the celebration in their sleeping garb.
Award-winning recording artiste and singer-songwriter Melissa Indot, YouTube sensation Elizabeth Tan and Tune Hotels’ very own Eugene See entertained with performances of their own hit songs and popular interpretations.
International journalists and bloggers from Indonesia, Thailand, the Philippines, Singapore, Australia and Taiwan were also flown in courtesy of AirAsia and AirAsia X. The event was also made possible by partner-sponsors including Tune Talk Mobile Prepaid, the AirAsia BIG Loyalty Programme, Doof The World Sdn Bhd and TripAdvisor, whose mascot Ollie the Owl made a special appearance.
Group CEO of Tune Hotels Mark Lankester said: “We are thrilled with the opening of Tune Hotel klia2 which has already received an overwhelming response and very strong forward bookings from travellers around the region. Through the #RoomerHasIt social media campaign we wanted to introduce and create further awareness of our latest design and fit-out to previous guests as well as the fantastic facilities at klia2, the world’s largest purpose-built airport for low cost carriers. There’s no better way to do that than have them immersed in the hotel itself.”
He said with Tune Hotel klia2, guests now have a superior accommodation option that is not only great value for money but also features improvements to its international-standard offerings. With 400 rooms, the hotel is directly connected to the new Kuala Lumpur International Airport 2 (klia2) Terminal via a covered walkway and link bridge, allowing easy and more convenient access as well as the Gateway@klia2 shopping mall. For ultimate convenience, the hotel features AirAsia self check-in kiosks in the lobby.
“Much has been said about the huge size of the new klia2 Terminal and it is impressively large. By hosting these winners and their guests at the Tune Hotel klia2, we want to illustrate just how convenient it is to have a great sleep or enjoy the services within the hotel while waiting for their next flight, and the convenience of strolling over to the terminal without rushing and with time on your side. Business and leisure guests as well as airline passengers on connecting flight extended waits will enjoy a totally improved experience and most importantly a very comfortable and refreshing stay, with more amenities,” said Lankester.
On top of that, he said, guests at Tune Hotel klia2 enjoy great connectivity to KL city and its surrounding suburbs as the klia2 Terminal boasts not only bus and taxi services but also the Express Rail Link (ERL) train service that connects to and from Kuala Lumpur Sentral. For guests arriving at or departing from the KLIA Main Terminal, they can make use of the scheduled shuttle service via the ERL that costs just RM2 one way and stroll over to the hotel via its covered link bridge.
“As you can see, from klia2 guests and travellers can easily connect and enjoy our hotel service network depending on their preferences and travel purpose. In the heart of KL city they will find the hugely popular Tune Hotel Downtown Kuala Lumpur that is right smack in the centre and in the surroundings we have the Tune Hotel Kota Damansara as well as the soon-to-open Tune Hotel DPulze Cyberjaya, not to mention excellent flight connectivity, direct and indirect, to key cities and destinations in Malaysia and the whole region including Australia, Thailand, Indonesia, Philippines, India, Japan and even as far as England and Scotland, all destinations where the Tune Hotels network is present,” he added.
Tune Hotels has innovatively transformed the guestroom experience into a modern-style accommodation featuring the all-new room design with a sleek writing table, luggage platform and a 32-inch flat screen LED TV, bringing about an improved, sophisticated but cool ambience throughout the Tune Hotel klia2.
To add to the guest experience and comfort, the hotel’s spacious lobby features a cool casual seating lounge with free wifi and an expansive open-air courtyard lounge, overlooked by a 24-hour restaurant and beverage centre. For guests with further transportation needs, the hotel includes a transport counter for overland transport needs and for flights, two AirAsia self check-in kiosks and klia2’s flight information displays are provided within the lobby for added convenience to hotel guests.
The hotel also features 167 parking bays which are conveniently located just a few steps away from the airport terminal.
With a projected annual capacity of 45 million passengers, the klia2 is the world's largest purpose-built terminal dedicated for low cost carriers (LCCs). The new airport commenced commercial operations on 2 May 2014.

Since I often get asked the question "Where do you see all these cars?" presented below is an annual chronological description of the New England's (and surrounding departments') best classic car events, with star rankings denoting levels of awesomeness on a scale of 1 to 5.
Rhinebeck Spring Show (Rhinebeck, NY, 1st weekend of May) ★★ - now in its 42nd year, the annual Rhinebeck spring dustoff show/swap meet is a slightly smaller version of Hershey's spring and fall meets, with American cars and foreign cars spread over two days. Getting there is a bit of a schlep from northeast's major cities, but the drive there is fun and quite purty.
Carlisle Import Nationals (Carlisle, PA, last week of May) ★★★★ - three days and hundreds of rare foreign cars. Carlisle is a little out of the way, depending where you're located, but its perfectly situated to attract classic car owners and fans from the east coast and the midwest. One day is never enough to take it all in, so plan for a couple days if you're going to be making the trip. Perhaps the only event at which one can see scores of Fiats, Citroens, Toyotas, Alfas, and Renaults all in one place.
Newport Concours d'Elegance (Newport, RI, last week of May) ★★★ - a small concours event set in historic Newport (not too far from where The Great Gatsby was filmed), this event brings together a good selection of cars from New England, though it can be a bit uneven from year to year. Held at Fort Adams for the past two years, the stunning views of Newport harbour usually makes up for gaps in the field of cars.
Greenwich Concours d'Elegance & Bonhams Auction (Greenwich, CT, first week of June) ★★★★★ - the premier concours show of the northeast, period! Now in its 16th year, Greenwich Concours is listed in the book 1,000 Places to See Before You Die. This event draws the best cars from the best collections of New England and the entire eastern seaboard, so its not unusual to see cars from Amelia Island and Hilton Head. The visitor parking lot is a show in itself, and should not be passed up. Automobile Magazine is there, Sports Car Market is there, what else does one need?
British by the Sea (Waterford, CT, first week of June) ★★★ - a small event put on by the CT MG club, this show takes place on the grounds of the beautiful Harkness Mansion, which is the single most perfect place for a classic car event on the east coast. As the name suggests, British cars abound, including TVR's, Rovers, Austin-Healeys, and Jaaaaags!!!. The only downside is that most years this event directly (and infuriatingly) conflicts with Greenwich Concours, as well as British Car Day at Larz Anderson, which is a choice that people shouldn't be forced to make in the first place.
Citroen Rendezvous (Saratoga Springs, NY, last week of June) ★★★ - the Citroen Club's yearly meet in upstate NY, this show brings together Citroens, Peugeots, and Renaults (okay, not too many Renaults) from all over the east coast, Atlantic Canada, and the midwest. The only show besides Carlisle Import Natl's where you're going to see the three main French makes, and admission's free.
Hemmings New England Concours d'Elegance (Stratton Mountain, VT, 3rd weekend in July) ★★★★ - Hemmings-sponsored concours event set in the ski resort village of Stratton, this event bring together a well-balanced mix of impeccably restored domestic and foreign classics from all eras. Not too big or too flashy, in a perfect setting and a relaxed atmosphere that's impossible to replicate elsewhere. The drive there is magnificent, even though a bit too long if you're traveling from the northeast's big cities or from the shore.
North Shore Concours d'Elegance (North Shore, MA, last weekend in July) ★★★ a new addition to concours events on the east coast, this small concours takes place on the grounds of Endicott College just north of Boston. 2011 had a great turnout and a nice variety of automobiles, ranging from vintage British cars to Italian scooters, and even a Soviet Volga.
Larz Anderson Lawn Events (Brookline, MA, spring thru fall) ★★★ - The Larz Anderson Auto Museum, situated just southwest of Boston, holds about a dozen different shows from May till October, themed either by marque or by country of manufacture, ranging from Japanese cars to motorcycles. The events are well organized and well attended, and with more than 10 to choose from, there's something for everyone. Or you can go to ALL of them. The top three events, by car and visitor attendance are:
- British Car Day
- German Car Day
- Tutto Italiano (Italian cars, obvs)
Lime Rock Sunday in the Park Concours (Lime Rock, CT, first weekend of September) ★★★★ - tucked away in CT's thoroughly inaccessible (in more ways than one - just try using your cell) northwest corner, a place so remote that not even satellites fly over it, this semi-concours features a tremendous variety of rare, mostly-European automobiles, lined up around the historic Lime Rock race track. A beautiful setting, and a wonderful place to visit for any automotive event. And getting there is an event in itself.
Fairfield County Concours d'Elegance & Bonhams Auction (Westport, CT, third week of September) ★★★★★ - a concours which has established itself in record time, held at the Fairfield County Hunt Club. This event is a bigger, though slightly less glamorous version of Greenwich Concours, and there is a lot of overlap in terms of cars between the two events. It's gotten stupendously good in just a few short years and owing to the large event grounds, there is no shortage of things to see. A very powerful, all-the-right-box-ticking, season ending event.
And here are some major events that I wasn't able to attend this year, as a result of a scheduling conflict or not having a helicopter, but here are a few important ones that are worth a look:
- British Invasion (Stowe, VT, 2nd weekend in Sept) - a massive British car show held in the ski resort town of Stowe.
- The Elegance at Hershey (Hershey, PA, 2nd weekend in June) - exactly what it sounds like. Chocolate not included.
- La Belle Macchine d'Italia (Mt. Pocono, PA, third week of June) - the nation's largest Italian car event
