When taking on a documentary project such as the Barbershop Project, there are bound to be locations that end up being stronger than the others. When I was driving down Gay St., smack-dab in downtown Columbus, this little corner barbershop just grabbed me and wouldn't let go! "John Henry Barber & Styling, Your Hair - My Wisdom" Perfect!
John Henry has been barbering for 40+ years, and boy does he have some high-end clients! I waited through two of them to get this one image (I always ask the"sitter"). So, more than the typical 15-20 min. I'll spend assessing the location, light, etc., I had just over an hour to get this shot right. Just before each customer arrived, and just after, John would quickly assume this pose on the barber's chair, laughing it up with tidbits from the same article in his latest issue of Maxim.
This image is now in my Top 5 8x10 images ever! Start to finish, this image was visualized, exposed, processed, and finished in much the same manner as I was trying to communicate. A LF photographer's dream. ^__^

*UPDATE* You can see this image as a silver gelatin print in this quick how-to video on split grade printing:
The plan was to run two bodies again this time two M2 Leicas. Lenses were 90mm Elmarit, light for the length, and move up from 35mm to 50mm as standard with the Zeiss Sonnar C f1.5 which is always a joy in monochrome. I would, out of habit take the 15mm but I resisted and really didn’t see many opportunities to use it.
Photographed August 2018 / Rolleiflex Old Standard with Carl Zeiss Jena Tessar 7.5cm/3.5 lens. The film was Ilford HP5 PLUS a metered at ASA 320 developed in PYROCAT-HD (5ml A + 35ml B > 600ml, 7min 20secs @ 20*C). Negative was illuminated on a light box and scanned with an iPad mini using Film Scanner app. Image processed & finished in Flickr.

I hope this is ok to post here, but after several months of emails, negotiations, dealing with HMRC, Customs Brokers I am pleased to say I can finally start selling Photographer's Formulary PMK and Pyrocat HD developers and TF4 & TF5 fixer, see more at:
Photographed December 2017 / Rollei 35 miniature 35mm film camera (Schneider Kreuznach 40mm/3.5, S-Xenar). Rollei RPX 400 bulk film stock rated ASA 320 developed in Pyrocat-HD (5ml A + 25ml B > 600ml, 7min @ 20*C). Negative was scanned in a JUMBL scanner, image was processed & finished in Flickr.
Photographed November 2017 / Kodak Sterling II folding camera with 'transplanted' Kodak Special Anastigmat 100mm/4.5 lens. ILFORD 3200 rated ASA 1000 developed in PYROCAT-HD (5ml A + 25ml B > 600ml, 8min @ 20*C). Negative was 'scanned' to SD card in a Reflecta X120 scanner unit, image was processed & finished in Flickr. The results obtained scanning this (6cm X 9cm) negative with the Reflecta X120 Scanner unit are quite adequate though it must be said are hardly 'archival' quality. Compared to the result obtained by illuminating the negative on a light box and scanning with an iPad using Film Scanner app there is little to tell between them. The Reflecta X120 is very convenient to use over the iPad/light box technique however and does give VERY SLIGHTLY better resolution in my opinion. The Reflecta X120 does its job of getting the negative into a digital form for comparatively small financial outlay but don't expect it to perform miracles!.
I was sorting out some IXMOO cassettes ready to load some winter speed ORWO N74 when one popped up with "xxposed" marked on the leader. It was Retropan 320, a film I shot ages ago. Some other rolls were ready so it was into Pyrocat -HD. I think this was shot on the Barnack IIIc with the 5cm Summar as I vaguely remember wanting to go go full "retro" and the look is very Summarish. Strangely I took the same walk the previous day and took some of the shots again without realising so the Greenhouse, here in summer, will be posted soon in early winter
Several months back, I made a trek out to Hocking Hills with photographer friend Matt Gagle. While we were both eager to shoot that early morning, the weather was hardly cooperating.
We were rained on for nearly the entire morning, and our first stop at Old Man's Cave proved to be an exercise in just how wet we wanted our gear to be. Both of us far too stubborn to settle for not shooting, we set up near the entrance to the trail, and shot anyway!

Photigraphs April 2019 / Canon F1 35mm SLR with Canon FD 50mm/1.8 SC breechlock lens. Film was FOMAPAN 400 bulk stock metered ASA 200 developed in sodium carbonate version PYROCAT-HD (5ml A + 50ml B > 600ml, 7min, 20*C). Negative was digitalised in a JUMBL scanner unit and the image was edited on an iPad mini using the snap seed application.
The only advantage I can see with the crappy weather we are having is that you can shoot with fast lenses wide-open or close to it!
The TriX in Pyrocat HD stand development takes on a bit of "true grit" look to it. The negatives are distinctly "khaki" coloured - similar to the PMK negs. Edgy look to them too.
This is most likely at f2/0

A rough proof from a dizzying darkroom contact sheet printing session on the weekend. Printing contact sheets can be instrumental in rediscovering what you've actually shot. I forgot about this one.
