Pinhole photography is not something I thought I would ever try. A few weeks ago, a coworker brought in these very neat, handmade pinhole cameras and I decided it was time.

The 8x10 Pinhole was made by Bob Grachien, has a field of view similar to using a 120mm lens, with an aperture of f/264. You need a lot of light to make it happen, but the pinhole is quite a relaxing way to work.

Camera movements: front shift and front fall to adjust composition; left swing to adjust plane of focus to approach alignment with the markers; front tilt to soften upper reaches of the trees.

Polarizer used to reduce the glare on the road - in truth, it maybe reduced the road by half a stop, which was less than I'd anticipated.

Not a keeper, but I think it does show what I need to work on: I need to be more mindful of the conditions; I need to adjust the composition a bit to make the markers stand out more; and I need to work on my camera technique - this one is a bit sloppy.

The owner did admit that owning a wooden hulled boat was a labor of love! It was scraped down to the bare hull and was awaiting more sanding. smoothing out and also replacing a couple of the planks. Here they tend t paint them with solid colours - in the Nordic countries they are often varnished with a mirror gloss - looks good but requires a lot of work.

Many, many photographers, artists, vagabonds, and dreamers end up along the California coast and find themselves staring at the rocks and waves, sifting through the sand for little shells, tossing a piece of driftwood back, seeing the wet sand swell under bare feet.

But really, words are insufficient to the cause here and frankly,

so are photographs. And yet we take them, by the millions. Stark raving lunatics with 5x7 cameras trudge down to Weston Beach in search of some little fragment left unturned.

In my opinion, it's not the shells, nor the sandstone that we come looking for. Like many endeavors, it is a search for what has meaning, for what can withstand the ravages of wind, water, and time, and still remain. What is eternal?

For millions of years the sea has railed against the shore in a

long-standing dialog that has shaped rocks, shells, humans, dolphins and even little sand fleas. All are related by circumstance. Nothing stands alone, all exist in relation to each other.

Like the little shells that nestle in the slight shelter of a

shallow depression, we hunker down in houses against the rain.

We are all family.
