Photographs made while exploring and documenting Ohio’s State Nature Preserve system. Some of the only places left in the state where nature remains uninterrupted. These lands are underappreciated, underfunded, but rich with a subtle beauty that I revere with my view camera.

Last but not least!

This is not the first roll of Ilford Fp4 developed in Pyrocat HD.

So I can make few in-between conclusion about the combo.

Well...it simply works!

Midtones rendeting is superb.

High tones seem to be neverending (in this photograph I put them in Zone VI).

Shadows have a lot of information to work with.

Generally a very very nice combination!

Don't see many of these in our neck of the woods. I am sure someone can ID the exact model they look to have made a few.

Photographed July 2018 / FED Zarya 35mm viewfinder camera & M39-M40 adjustable adaptor with Meyer Optik Gorlitz Helioplan 40mm/4.5 (uncoated) lens. A Leitz VIOOH set at about 40mm attached to the accessory shoe was used for framing.Film was ILFORD PAN 100 metered at ASA 80 developed in PYROCAT-HD (5ml A + 25ml B > 600ml, 5min 30 sec, 20*C).Image processed & finished in Flickr, cropped to 4:3 aspect. Light was very 'poor' and I had to use the lens at f5.6 (almost wide open) at 1/30 sec. Notice the 'vintage glow' produced by this uncoated lens. It was pouring with rain and I was shooting into light.

A comparison of PyrocatHD & new Nucleol BF200 argyrotype tests. Slightly screwed up the original Pyrocat test, but still confirms my feeling that new FP4 BF200 N-dev time should be 8'30" @ 20ºC up from 7', moving one zone up in highlights. And also moving back down to ISO 64 for more shadow detail.

This also demonstrates that Pyrocat has a better control of midtone contrast. I'm now also going to try with Moersch Tanol on FP4 @ ISO 100 and compare that too.

This all because PyrocatHD is no longer available premixed in the UK.

The Norman Keep Cardiff Castle; photographed AD November 1136 Rolleiflex Original Model TLR K614 with Carl Zeiss Jena Tessar 7.5cm/3.8. Film was ILFORD 3200 DELTA PRO metered ASA 800 developed in PYROCAT-HD sodium carbonate version 5mlA + 50mlB > 600ml, 8min @ 20*C. Negative was illuminated on a light panel and scanned with an iPad mini using FilmScanner application. Image processed and finished in Flickr, cropped very slightly out of full frame. It's remarkable to note how this 85 year old Carl Zeiss Tessar lens draws or renders the image especially considering the very basic quality of the scanning method. The subject matter is geometrically quite 'flat' as was the light that day. Yet the photograph has an almost three dimensional spaciousness.

Photographed October 2018 / KW Praktiflex SLR (2nd generation M40 thread mount) with Carl Zeiss Jena Biotar 5.8cm/2 🔺T , 17 aperture blade. Film was Kentmere 400 bulk stock metered at ASA 200 developed in PYROCAT-HD (5ml A + 25ml B > 600ml, 7min @ 20*C). Negative was scanned in a JUMBL scanner unit; image processed & finished in Flickr.

Photographed December 2018 / Zeiss IKONTA 521/2 folding camera with Carl Zeiss Jena Tessar 10.5cm/4.5. Film was ILFORD DELTA 3200 PRO metered ASA 800 developed in sodium carbonate based PYROCAT-HD (5ml A + 50ml B > 600ml, 8miin, 20*C). Negative was illuminated on a light box and 'scanned' with an iPad mini using the FilmScanner app. Image was processed & finished in Flickr: cropped slightly out of full frame.
