Sometimes a shot you've mentally thrown-out can come back to surprise you. One such shot was this "warm-up" shot taken at Cedar Falls in Hocking Hills. Arriving at the scene, the composition was pretty straight-forward:
"Three rocks and moving water. Welp, let's just add a little front swing and get to work!"

Film was ILFORD 3200 DELTA PRO metered ASA 800 developed in PYROCAT-HD negative was illuminated by laying it flat on a light box and then photographed with a PENTAX k3 DSLR fitted with a EL NIKKOR 63mm/2.8 enlarging lens and extension tube. A PENTAX K > PENTAX M42 adaptor and an M39 to M42 ring were used to interface the components. The camera was attached to a sturdy copy stand via a Manfrotto 454 micro metric sliding plate. The image was uploaded to an iPad mini and was then edited on the iPad using the Snap Seed application.

Photographed 16 August 2017 / Kodak 1A Autographic Jr. (1914-1927) folding bellows camera with achromatic doublet lens. Camera originally for 116 roll film converted to transport 120 roll film. Film was ILFORD HP5+ metered ASA 250 developed in PYROCAT-HD (5ml A + 25ml B > 600ml, 7min 15sec, 20*C). Negative was illuminated on a light table and scanned with a Pentax k3 DSLR and Rodenstock RODAGON 60mm/4 enlarging lens on an adjustable helicoid extension tube. The image was edited on an iPad mini using the Snap Seed application. Full Frame scan of the 58mm x 110mm negative no trimming. Notice the unique way in which the simple achromatic doublet lens (which is about 100 years old) ‘draws’ or renders and the remarkable sharpness from such a simple lens. This image is exactly like one of those old postcards of the early 20th century and indeed a camera like this old Kodak would have been used to generate such postcards. What a shame 116 roll film and all those other wonderful, large format roll films are no longer available.
Try though I may, there's no one trail that I connect with in the Hocking Hills region more than Old Man's Cave. It's gorgeous when rainy, dry, covered in leaves, frozen solid, and everything in between.
Spring and Summer mornings on the trail have been the most kind to me over the years, and the cool spring morning I made this image was no exception.

TESTS of KENTMERE 400 120 size in home-made PYROCAT HD Staining Developer . I rated film 320 ASA and gave 17 mins @ 20oC -- there seems to be a High FOG LEVEL in the rebates . I CUT the film so next test will be with my 510-Pyro formula. I was LUCKY we had some SUNSHINE at LAST to test the Contrast. CAMERA was ROLLEIFLEX T with 16-on kit 1/250th @ f6.3 with x2 Yellow Filter - did not do anything to photo!

I tried to lighten up my old back's load by bringing a medium duty carbon fiber tripod on this trip. There was a little bit of wind on the canyon rim, and if you pixel peep the original full size scans of these Bryce Canyon images, it's apparent they are NOT sharp. So next time it's my heavy tripod, or I spring for an expensive heavy duty carbon one. Sigh...

I needed a quick test roll for the newly acquired Nikon F5 to test the transport and metering and grabbed an old roll of Rollei Retro 400S. I never took to the film although as usual many praise it. What I forgot was it was not iso400 in my testing. Various sources have it as Agfa Aviphot Pan400S or more likely the 200 version but perhaps it has aged in storage and slowed. Whatever it didn't do well in the Pyrocat HD but then again that is due to retire, the small amount, never a good thing, left in the 1L A bottle, so the combination produced "interesting" results, the fixer is end of life care as well so this weekend is sorted mixing new chemicals.
Photographed November 2018 / KW Praktiflex 35mm SLR (2nd generation with M40 lens mount) & Carl Zeiss Jena Tessar 5cm/3.5 🔺T lens. Film was KENTMERE 400 metered ASA 200 developed in PYROCAT-HD (5ml A + 25ml B > 600ml, 7min @ 20*C). Negative scanned in a JUMBL scanner box unit; image processed and finished in Flickr. Cropped to 16:9 aspect. Notice how this little Carl Zeiss Jena Tessar 5cm/3.5 lens (late 1940's) 'draws' or renders the image; the optical engineers at Zeiss were getting it right.
Last week I acquired a Kodak Special Six-20 6x9 folder, with the Anastigmat Special lens. I'd been looking for a decent one for awhile (most have bellows like a sieve) and this one seemed like a decent candidate for restoration. (This is the camera: flic.kr/p/2mHW4G3)
This roll of test film was Tri-X 400, exposed at just under 200 ASA. The exposure here was 4 seconds at f11. The film was processed in Pyrocat HD.
The negatives are acceptable for an 80 year old folder of this caliber, but not as sharp as what my Medalist II produces. Still, its a perfectly usable camera.
Addendum: Today - 24 hours after making this photo - I can no longer access this part of the riverbank, as its under water. Probably be inaccessible until next May or June now.

For the first time I shot doubles of the latest images, processing the second of the two sheets for a longer time. I'm getting the ducks in the row to start alternative process printing shortly - both Cyanotypes and Argyrotypes. Should be fun!
