The film was ILFORD DELTA 3200 PRO 120 roll film re-spooled to 620 metered ASA 800 developed in PYROCAT-HD. The negative was illuminated on a light table and scanned with an iPad mini using filmScanner application.

This is a test shot using an unbranded SLR camera I have refurbished recently. The shutter is the same as Thornton-Pickard, so I believe the camera is also from this brand. The original back has a rare 13x8cm size, so this gives me room to adapt it for 4x5. The front panel was also rebuilt to take standard Graflex plates, and the camera now is mounted with Pentac f/2.9.

While the day was predicted to be dull and grey, the one weather app I use tracked some good morning sun. So I went out and chased the light before having to come into work. Now shooting that early handheld with a film rated to ASA-64 might not have been the best ideas, but hey, it is Expired Film Day!

One hazy, overcast, absurdly snowy afternoon in Findlay, I decided to drive out a few miles to the edge of the county and try out some more of this x-ray film. Heck, at < $0.30/sheet, any kind of picture is now worth taking.

Metering is always a bit tricky in snowy weather. One wants to be sure to represent the snow as white, and not a muddy grey. But at the same time, one wants to be able to capture all the splendid shadow detail of objects around the snow. The final challenge, of course, was accomplishing all of this on the notoriously contrasty x-ray film.

How do you guys think it turned out? This is the result of heavy overexposure for the shadows, and extremely contracted development, with Pyrocat HD, to tame the highlights.

Last week I acquired a Kodak Special Six-20 6x9 folder, with the Anastigmat Special lens. I'd been looking for a decent one for awhile (most have bellows like a sieve) and this one seemed like a decent candidate for restoration. (This is the camera: flic.kr/p/2mHW4G3)

This roll of test film was Tri-X 400, exposed at just under 200 ASA. The exposure here was 1/2 second at f16. The film was processed in Pyrocat HD. The Anastigmat Special lens appears to perform better at f16 than any aperture larger than that.

The negatives are acceptable for an 80 year old folder of this caliber, but not as sharp as what my Medalist II produces. Still, its a perfectly usable camera.

N+1 development for Argyrotype, BTZS tubes, Pyrocat HD 2:2:100, 20’48”, 21ºC (heavily overdeveloped for argytoype but scanned ok: not quite sure what I was thinking with this one. Would probably have been better with reading the trunk on the left as a midtone and using a contracted development. The heavily extended development as it is pulled up the midtones and shadows as well as the highlights and made an argyrotype print impossible.)

Acetic acid stop, TF-4 Fix, Hypoclear, 30min wash

When I first got these out, I was not too pleased with the results. And while I'm not 100% happy, I think another 30 seconds in the soup would help. A little dark, high contrast, some tonality between the whites and blacks. Lots of grain, but sharp.

Towards the sunset. I often carry the 15mm Heliar screw mount version along it is so light it's no burden at all, conversely I rarely actually shoot it. It is my loss for some subjects it is the only lens that conveys the scale required. No finder, just there to be lost/mis-placed, it's so wide just point in the general direction, it's why we can crop and straighten after the fact.

Pyrocat HD is always kind to the clouds.
