Pycnonotus goiavier analis

2 fledglings waiting patiently for their parent's return for food.

Just like any other baby animals, they look incredibly cute and adorable at this tender age.

Fully capable of flight though, this pair of twins would have to depend on their parents to feed them for another week or so before they become fully independent. In the coming days, they would need to acquire the bread and butter before becoming a proud Yellow-vented Bulbul and lead their independent lives away from their parents.

The adult species is very commonly encountered in our parks and gardens, however, the juveniles are not.

The red-vented bulbul (Pycnonotus cafer) is a member of the bulbul family of passerines. The red-vented bulbul is easily identified by its short crest giving the head a squarish appearance. The body is dark brown with a scaly pattern while the head is darker or black. The rump is white while the vent is red. The black tail is tipped in white.

In 19th-century India these birds were frequently kept as cage pets and for fighting especially in the Carnatic region. They would be held on the finger with a thread attached and when they fought they would seize the red feathers of the opponents.[44]

Indians frequently tame it and carry it about the bazaars, tied with a string to the finger or to a little crutched perch, which is often made of precious metals or jade.

The rump is white while the vent is red. The black tail is tipped in white. The Himalayan races have a more prominent crest and are more streaked on the underside. Sexes are similar in plumage, but young birds are duller than adults. The typical call has been transcribed as ginger beer but a number of sharp single note calls likened as pick are also produced. Their alarm calls are usually responded to and heeded by many other species of bird.

I'm a real fan of these noisy, assertive birds. We were in Mauritius and, though a cyclone had missed us, we had some strong winds. This bird decided to take possession of a swaying cactus and the wind be damned!! More at "Colin Pacitti Wildlife Photography & Fishing Travels" - www.colin-pacitti.com.

Schwarzkopf Bülbül (Pycnonotus atriceps)

Originating in Eastern India, the Red-Whiskered Bulbul - Pycnonotus jocosus - is a very distinct bird with its red whiskers, black pointed crest and red under tail feathers. A friendly bird, it is very familiar to people living in Tropical Asia where it is most prominent but it has also been introduced in Australia (New South Wales), Los Angeles, Mauritius and Florida. These lovely little birds feed on berries, fruits and flower parts in gardens and will also forage on the ground searching for ants. This inquisitive pair were seen near our hotel at Le Morne, Mauritius.

Flame-throated bulbul (Pycnonotus gularis) is about 18 cm long with an olive green back and yellow underparts, a squarish black head without a crest, an orange-red throat. The iris is white and contrasts with the dark head. The legs are brown and the gape is yellowish-pink. The bill is dark brown to black. They are olive backed with yellow undersides, a triangular orange-red throat and a white iris that stands out against the contrasting black head. They are usually seen foraging in groups in the forest canopy for berries and small insects. They have a call often with two or three tinkling notes that can sound similar to those produced by the red-whiskered bulbul.

Black-crested Bulbul, Pycnonotus flaviventris, Merbah Jambul Hitam

It is found from the Indian subcontinent to southeast Asia. The head of this bulbul is black while the rest of its body is in different shades of yellow. Both the male and female are similar in plumage. This is a bird of forest and dense scrub. It builds its nest in a bush. Feeds on fruit and insects.
