White-eared Bulbul

(Pycnonotus leucotis)

Tehran,

Iran

This fledgling of the red vented bulbul (Pycnonotus cafer) had wandered into my balcony. He was barely able to fly. I could hear his parents trying to direct him. I grabbed my camera and got as close as I could but had to run for cover soon as the parents started squawking over my head :)

He's safe and has grown up into a handsome bulbul...

On le nomme aussi bulbul aux yeux noirs.

The very vocal Red-whiskered Bulbul was an almost dailycompanion during the tour. This bird was seen in the grounds of Jungle Hut, Mudumalai, southern India.

Thanks for your visit and any comment you make on my photographs is greatly appreciated and encouraging! But please do not use this image without permission.

They are used to be uncommon but their numbers has increase over the years. Hard to miss this guy in the nature reserve these days. Seen here showing its trademark feature, olive wing.

White-cheeked Bulbul (Pycnonotus leucogents)

Mauritius - Red Whiskered Bulbuls (pycnonotus jocosus) are non-migratory and found throughout tropical Asia. In parts of India, they were popular cage birds, easily captured because of their confiding disposition. In certain regions of Thailand, they are still shown off as song birds, often taking part in rival singing contests.

Measuring about 20 cm (7 in.) in length including the tail, this frugivore is never still or silent for long, dipping and diving through lightly wooded areas, more open country with bushes and shrubs, and farmland. In the mornings, they will often perch conspicuously when they call from the tops of trees.

Introduced feral populations have established themselves in the USA (Los Angeles, Florida, Hawaii), in Mauritius, Reunion, the Mascarene Islands and Australia.

Their loud calls are described as a sharp kink-a-joo, and their songs as scolding chatter.

These neighbors were a delight to watch and listen to, and easily fell into a daily banana tourist trap!

Olive-winged Bulbul (Pycnonotus plumosus)

Justification

This species has an extremely large range, and hence does not approach the thresholds for Vulnerable under the range size criterion (Extent of Occurrence 30% decline over ten years or three generations). The population size has not been quantified, but it is not believed to approach the thresholds for Vulnerable under the population size criterion (10% in ten years or three generations, or with a specified population structure). For these reasons the species is evaluated as Least Concern.

Taxonomic source(s)

Sibley, C. G.; Monroe, B. L. 1990. Distribution and taxonomy of birds of the world. Yale University Press, New Haven, USA.

Population justification

The global population size has not been quantified, but the species is described as generally abundant throughout its range (del Hoyo et al. 2005).

Trend justification

The population is suspected to be stable in the absence of evidence for any declines or substantial threats.

The straw-headed bulbul (Pycnonotus zeylanicus) is a species of songbird in the bulbul family, Pycnonotidae. It is found from the Malay Peninsula to Borneo. Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical moist lowland forest, subtropical or tropical mangrove forest, subtropical or tropical moist shrubland, arable land, plantations, and rural gardens. It is threatened by habitat loss and poaching. The straw-headed bulbul is prized for its singing ability and is a highly sought-after species by bird enthusiasts in Southeast Asia, especially Indonesia. This trade is causing population reductions across the species' range and is a major barrier to its conservation. [2]

The yellow-vented bulbul (Pycnonotus goiavier) is a member of the bulbul family of passerine birds. It is resident breeder in southeast Asia from southern Thailand and Cambodia south to Borneo and the Philippines. It is found in a wide variety of open habitats, but not deep forest. It is one of the most common birds in cultivated areas. They appear to be nomadic, roaming from place to place regularly.

The yellow-vented bulbul builds a well-camouflaged but fragile, loose, deep, cup-shaped nest from grass, leaves, roots, vine stems, and twigs. The nest is untidy on the outside, but it is neatly lined with plant fibers. It may be built in a wide range of places from low bushes to high trees. This is a species adapted to humans and may even nest in gardens. The yellow-vented bulbul lays 2–5 eggs in February to June.

The yellow-vented bulbuls eats berries and small fruits. They also sip nectar, nibble on young shoots, and take some insects.
