Nonprofit animal protection organization, Animal Equality, has purchased a billboard during the month of September to overlap with New York Ad Week, a worldwide gathering of marketing and brand professionals sponsored by McDonald’s, and is running constant digital advertising at the event to call on the restaurant to stop the abuses of chickens by its suppliers.
Additionally, Animal Equality is sending staff and mobilizing volunteers in New York City to urge McDonald’s to adopt a meaningful animal welfare policy for the chickens it uses for meat.
The billboard is positioned next to the New York Times building and is part of a coalition effort taking place throughout the country calling on McDonald’s to make reforms that are resoundingly supported by independent members of the scientific community and include:
- Switching to healthier breeds of birds.
- Allowing chickens more room to move around.
- Providing better living conditions, including clean litter, that allow for natural behaviors.
- Agreeing to third-party inspections.
As the billboard points out, over 140 companies, including major competitors like Burger King, Subway, Jack In The Box and Starbucks, have agreed to improve the lives of chickens by adopting these reforms. Meanwhile, McDonald’s refuses to make changes and lags far behind.
“What McDonald's doesn't advertise is how far behind its competitors it is on animal welfare. says Maral Cavner, Animal Equality’s Corporate Campaigns Coordinator. “We are in an era where we’re calling on corporations to be leaders and McDonald’s certainly has the power to eliminate the worst abuses in factory farming. Why won’t it?”

RNs Join Council Members, Community Leaders Demand Safe Patient Staffing Bill in District of Columbia
WASHINGTON D.C. — In an effort to dramatically improve care at District of Columbia hospitals, registered nurses represented by National Nurses United joined with D.C. Council members and community leaders at a press conference to announce the introduction of the 2015 Patient Protection Act.
Modeled after a successful California law, the 2015 Patient Protection Act sets specific limits on the number of patients RNs can care for (nurse-to-patient ratios) in Washington, D.C.’s hospitals.
Press conference speakers included bill co-sponsors Council Chairman Phil Mendelson, Council members Elissa Silverman, Charles Allen and Vincent Orange, NNU Co-President Jean Ross, RN and other nurse leaders, Metro Washington Council AFL-CIO spokesman Chris Garlock, and faith leaders the Rev. Graylan Hagler and Rabbi Gilah Langner.
"This legislation is very important to ensure quality of care for residents of the District of Columbia," Mendelson emphasized. "Hospitals are shortchanging patients by shortchanging staffing."

Weird collision of thoughts went into producing this. I've been discussing the recession at work recently, and thinking of cash; I've also been reading Le Morte d'Arthur, the legend of King Arthur and remembered the tale of Alderley Edge in Cheshire where King Arthur is supposed to lie in wait, magically sealed in a cave until he and his knights are needed most, and then ride forth to save the day.
Not that I'm competetive but I hired a photo studio that has a couple of large safes in it just for this shot.
The idea is that the Golden Queen, kept under safe 'protection' has finally been summoned forth to save the world from economic meltdown.
It made sense at the time!

I use the gloves because the peppers will burn my eyes if for whatever reason I rub my eyes after preparation. That's obvious. The less-than-obvious application is for slicing the tomatoes. All that acid in the tomatoes can really burn your skin! I found this out the hard way after I stopped using canned tomatoes in favor of using the fresh variety and my left hand sustained light (yet really irritating) chemical burns.
