Council of State Convenes to Consider the Protection of Life During Pregnancy Bill
Taoiseach Enda Kenny attended a meeting of the Council of State convened by President Higgins to consider the Protection of Life During Pregnancy Bill.
It’s the first time that President Higgins has convened the Council of State since he took office in November 2011.
There have been 28 meetings of the Council since 1940.

Challenge
Violence, abuse and exploitation of children in West and Central Africa are tragic aspects of childhood. Surveys show that the vast majority of children experience violent discipline. Nearly one in three teenage girls have been beaten or hit since the age of 15, and one in 10 raped or sexually abused.
Child marriage – a serious violation of children’s rights – affects four in 10 girls aged 20–24 who were married before their 18th birthday. The region also has a quarter of all girl victims of female genital mutilation and cutting, and the highest rate of teenage pregnancy in the world.
Despite significant progress in improving civil registration and vital statistics systems, birth registration rates in the region are low and declining in some countries. Less than half of all children under five in Africa are registered at birth.
Children in the region are especially affected by migration. Many are currently on the move, either unaccompanied or traveling with their families. Migration involves plucking children from their homes, schools and communities, which can be hugely disruptive, stressful and dangerous.
Armed conflict, which plagues some of the region’s countries, has also put the lives of children in serious danger. Children are experiencing grave child rights in violations such as killing, injury, recruitment by armed forces or groups, sexual violence, abduction, denial of humanitarian assistance and attacks on schools and hospitals.
Solution
Every child should be protected from violence, exploitation and harmful social and cultural practices. This is how we make it happen in Africa.
Violence and Exploitation
Ending violence, abuse and exploitation of children means bringing together many different actors to work together. SNL supports countries and partners to develop and carry out systemic and multi-sector programmes with a focus on sexual violence, violence in and around schools, and physical violence. In addition, countries are assisted to develop preparedness, prevention and response initiatives for children protection during conflict and other disasters.
Child Marriage
Child marriage threatens girls' education, health, emotional well-being, and the health of their children. To put an end to this harmful practice and support children, SNL works with countries to galvanize political will, develop laws, provide health care to women and girls affected by female genital mutilation/cutting and mobilize communities to change behaviour.
Birth Registration
Birth registration is a passport to protection for children and provides them with access to social services. SNL works with countries to increase birth registration rates through the health system and in remote communities, as well as modernizing civil registration and vital statistic systems.

African Beads:
;The earliest Africans made beads as “fetishes”, charms, talisman and amulets for protection and adornments. The first materials were shell, stone, wood, bone, seeds, amber, ivory, teeth, clay, metals, etc. Beads were highly valuable and were also used as currency.
Trading could be done for food, livestock, etc. Beads evolve into a visual language that express rank, spirituality initiation, used to communicate culture value important to the people way of life. African people have had a special relationship with beads for thousands of years.
No other people on the planet used as many beads or in such abundance as African and the importance of the beads was not it shape, color, size or place of manufacture but the value that had been assign to it by privies generations
.Long before the first European return to Africa in the 1400’s century we were adorning ourselves with beads. Many of the beads are becoming increasingly rare and difficult to fine and some are no longer available, as worldwide demand for the beads increases.
" African Trade Beads":
this term typically applies to beads made predominately in European countries from the late 1400s through to the early 1900s, beads traded in Africa, Americas and other counties.
This "trade" period was from the mid 1800s through the early 1900s; millions of these beads were produced and traded in Africa. The Europeans dominated the African bead market.
The Beads were re- introduced to the American market in the late 1960s, by young peace core volunteer returning from Africa.
The beads became associated with the Hippie movement as symbols of love and peace. Today these beads are popular in contemporary jewelry and as collectable items .Millions are in private collections, bead and museums. All beads from the collection of MBAD/ABA African Bead Museum.

This is a photograph from the annual BHAA Government Services/Social Protection Group's 5 Mile Road Race took place on Tuesday 27th May 2013 at 20:00 in Dunboyne, Co. Meath, Ireland. The course is a fast flat course which begins on the Dunboyne-Maynooth Road between the two entrances to Dunboyne Castle Estate. The race then proceeds in an anti-clockwise direction back to the Dunboyne Athletic Club on the Rooske Road in Dunboyne. The race reaches higher standards with every passing year. Paul Gorey and his team of volunteers must be given great credit for putting on such a wonderful race event. Thanks are also extended to Dunboyne Athletic Club, the BHAA, and the local community who all make this possible.

Overall Race Summary
Participants: There were approximately 500 participants .
Weather: A bright sunny evening with little breeze
Course: This course is fully left handed with very little in the way of inclines. Good road surface. These are nice narrow country roads with shelter provided by mature hedgerows. This year the race finished with 3/4 of a lap of the Dunboyne AC track.
Refreshments: Lots and lots as is the tradition with BHAA Events - served outside the scouts hall at the track.

I ran in the race - but my photograph doesn't appear here in your Flickr set! What gives?
As mentioned above we take these photographs as a hobby and as a voluntary contribution to the running community in Ireland. Very often we have actually ran in the same race and then switched to photographer mode after we finished the race. Consequently, we feel that we have no obligations to capture a photograph of every participant in the race. However, we do try our very best to capture as many participants as possible. But this is sometimes not possible for a variety of reasons:
►You were hidden behind another participant as you passed our camera
►Weather or lighting conditions meant that we had some photographs with blurry content which we did not upload to our Flickr set
►There were too many people - some races attract thousands of participants and as amateur photographs we cannot hope to capture photographs of everyone
►We simply missed you - sorry about that - we did our best!
You can email us petermooney78 AT gmail DOT com to enquire if we have a photograph of you which didn't make the final Flickr selection for the race. But we cannot promise that there will be photograph there. As alternatives we advise you to contact the race organisers to enquire if there were (1) other photographs taking photographs at the race event or if (2) there were professional commercial sports photographers taking photographs which might have some photographs of you available for purchase. Our 50th anniversary event in Geneva on 11 March 2015 celebrating the contribution our world-leading Human Rights Centre has made to the protection and promotion of human rights. Panelists were Dr Flavia Bustreo of the WHO, Professor Malcolm Evans of the University of Bristol, Dr Ahmed Shaheed and Lorna McGregor.
The First batch of Regional Protection Force is to arrive in Juba, in the next few weeks, said Under Secretary-General (USG) Hervé Ladsous.
Speaking at the Press conference, Ladsous stressed, “We are working actively on it. We did loose time because there is slowness in getting clearance and authorization here.”
However, the USG said that the UN is speeding things up for the coming of forces, “we are sparing no effort to speed it up, in next few week to see the first bangle of Protection Force in Juba.”
Ladsous told press that that the solution to the problems facing the country has to be a political one. He said that the United Nations and the humanitarian community must be supported in their efforts.
Under Secretary-General (USG) Ladsous together with the USG designate Jean-Pierre Lacroix, arrived in the country on Monday, for a two-day official visit.

Before the fence went up, but after the defacing, I confronted a couple skate boarders surfing the dish one night. Their response was… "You like to take pictures, We like to skate." I was kind of blown away by their logic (and blown off.) Guess rather than confronting them, I should have taken pictures to use as evidence.
