The K-2 teachers in my building scored second grade "practice prompts" today in preparation for the "real thing" in April. We worked in pairs scoring the students standard conventions and stylistic components. We'll return the prompts with "practice scores" and teaching points to help the students. It's always fun to read papers from students throughout the grade level. I always find this activity enlightening and rewarding too!

This is the beginning of a spread for our prompts group. The face on the right is a blind self-portrait.
From the book Uphill, Downhill, Yamhill, page 5.
Text from the book:
"Couch had realized the strategic location of the clearing in 1840. But it wasn't until 1843 that anyone decided to lay claim to the land. In November 1843 William Overton while in route from Ft. Vancouver to Oregon City with Asa Lovejoy, as was accustomed, stopped at the clearing for their mid-day rest. During this rest Overton discussed his wish to file a land claim on "the clearing" but that he lacked the filing fee and legal knowledge to file the claim, Overton offered Lovejoy half of the claim if he could provide these services. Lovejoy casually agreed to the proposition and the land claim was filed. After the filing of the claim, Lovejoy returned to his business interests in Oregon City, while Overton remained on the claim building a shack near the river, reportedly making shingles."
Not much is known of Overton, but he obviously knew a good investment when he saw one. Being a frontiersman at heart, in 1844 Overton sold out his portion of the claim for $50 to F.W. Pettygrove who had business interests in Oregon City. Lovejoy had been offered the other half of the claim, but declined feeling the land would never amount to much. With the new partnership of Pettygrove and Lovejoy, develop-ment of "the clearing" began, prompted mostly by Pettygrove.
Francis W. M. Pettygrove
"Merchant, farmer, politician, musician, town-builder.. . and pioneer 1843."
The earliest moving force behind the de-velopment of "the clearing" was Francis W. Pettygrove, born October 12, 1812, in Colais, Maine. He started to Oregon March 10, 1842 and arrived at Ft. Vancouver in May of 1843. Later in May, Pettygrove with his brother-in-law, whom he had traveled to Oregon with, left Ft. Vancouver with the wares they had brought from the east for Oregon City. Arriving in Oregon City they organized their wares and opened "The Red House" a merchandizing establishment.
In 1844 Pettygrove purchased half of the Overton-Lovejoy claim for $50 worth of merchan-dise. Before taking any steps in the trans-action, however, he traveled by canoe to the site and made soundings to check the depth of the river. His soundings confirmed Capt. John Couch's assessment, that it was possible for deep water ships to come to this point up the river without difficulty.
Shortly after Pettygrove's purchase of the claim, he began to develop his investment. In 1845-46 Thomas Brown was hired to survey the land and build a road to the Willamette Valley. Lovejoy in a personal manuscript described him and Pettygrove putting up $100 each towards the construction of that road.
Mr. Pettygrove did construct a road to the plains.. .His road crossed Canyon Creek almost as far down as B Street, ascended the hill north of the old King Homestead, went on through the present city park and so on over the mountains...

Prompt #11 from Janel of "Run with Scissors" Journal prompts
Journal Prompt 11: Hello friends. Today is another one of my favorite pages. And speaking of favorites, this is a page all about your faves!!
We are going to list your favorites in each of these four categories:
* TV shows
* Music
* Food
* Splurges
These are just a few of my faves in each category.
I first made a stencil to help me make the first one on the left (using the computer to make the pattern). I used Intense pencils on this and did overlays to get different colors.
The pattern on top right is also from the stencil, using watercolors.
The pattern on the bottom right was freehand drawing, using neocolors for edges to give them depth.
The lettering I realized I hadn't done it before the picture was taken, so I put that in with photo editing in PSP. I will write it on the original though.
