The project is developed using various pre-set text-to-image models, processing text prompt inputs. On the borderline between sensitive content and an easy slip into topics of violence, this project visualizes the depths of the subconscious of these models, excavating the influences of media and online information exchange. The quantified traces of reality and collective histories allow algorithms to generate content that recycles the past – building the spine of quasi-historical narratives – often obfuscated with prejudice and misinformation, along with the author’s personal bias. Generated outputs are presented inside a hypertext object – a tent that the audience can enter, as it were.

Rhyolite Ghost Town, Nevada

Her birth was brought about by Shorty Harris and E. L. Cross, who were prospecting in the area in 1904. They found quartz all over a hill, and as Shorty describes it “... the quartz was just full of free gold... it was the original bullfrog rock... this banner is a crackerjack” declared Shorty! “The district is going to be the banner camp of Nevada. I say so once and I’ll say it again.” At that time there was only one other person in the whole area: Old Man Beatty who lived in a ranch with his family five miles away. Soon the rush was on and several camps were set up including Bullfrog, the Amargosa and a settlement between them called Jumpertown. A townsite was laid out nearby and given the name Rhyolite from the silica-rich volcanic rock in the area.
There were over 2000 claims covering everything in a 30 mile area from the Bullfrog district. The most promising was the Montgomery Shoshone mine, which prompted everyone to move to the Rhyolite townsite. The town immediately boomed with buildings springing up everywhere. One building was 3 stories tall and cost $90,000 to build. A stock exchange and Board of Trade were formed. The red light district drew women from as far away as San Francisco. There were hotels, stores, a school for 250 children, an ice plant, two electric plants, foundries and machine shops and even a miner’s union hospital.
The town citizens had an active social life including baseball games, dances, basket socials, whist parties, tennis, a symphony, Sunday school picnics, basketball games, Saturday night variety shows at the opera house and pool tournaments. In 1906 Countess Morajeski opened the Alaska Glacier Ice Cream Parlor to the delight of the local citizenry. That same year an enterprising miner, Tom T. Kelly, built a Bottle House out of 50,000 beer and liquor bottles.
In April 1907 electricity came to Rhyolite, and by August of that year a mill had been constructed to handle 300 tons of ore a day at the Montgomery Shoshone mine. It consisted of a crusher, 3 giant rollers, over a dozen cyanide tanks and a reduction furnace. The Montgomery Shoshone mine had become nationally known because Bob Montgomery once boasted he could take $10,000 a day in ore from the mine. It was later owned by Charles Schwab, who purchased it in 1906 for a reported 2 to 6 million dollars.
The financial panic of 1907 took its toll on Rhyolite and was seen as the beginning of the end for the town. In the next few years mines started closing and banks failed. Newspapers went out of business, and by 1910 the production at the mill had slowed to $246,661 and there were only 611 residents in the town. On March 14, 1911 the directors voted to close down the Montgomery Shoshone mine and mill. In 1916 the light and power were finally turned off in the town.
Today you can find several remnants of Rhyolite’s glory days. Some of the walls of the 3 story bank building are still standing, as is part of the old jail. The train depot (privately owned) is one of the few complete buildings left in the town, as is the Bottle House. The Bottle House was restored by Paramount pictures in Jan, 1925. The ghost town of Rhyolite is on a mixture of federal and private land. It is not within the boundary of Death Valley National Park.
Rhyolite is 35 miles from the Furnace Creek Visitor Center on the way to Beatty, Nevada. A paved road heading north (left) from Hwy. 374 will take you to the heart of the the town.
Amira Marzouk is a MEPI alumna of the Leaders for Democracy Fellowship (LDF) 2016. She has previously served in the Tunisian parliament and represented Tunisia as the women’s representative to the African Union. Since LDF, Amira has immersed herself in political life and democracy-building. Her experience at LDF helped her to shape her vision and enabled her to be more structured with her efforts. As a result, she decided to center her work more towards strengthening civil society to reinforce democracy in Tunisia, prompting her to manage Youth Local Leaders School (YLLLS), a project of Center Democracy for All, founded by Tunisian LDF alumnus Anis Mimeche. YLLS is designed to increase political participation amongst youth in emerging and unprivileged municipalities in Tunisia.
Amira and her colleagues piloted YLLS in 2018. They modeled the application process and the curricular framework, from what they learned during the LDF program. The YLLS team recruited two law professors from Sfax city to help mentor 30 selected participants aged 22-35 from emerging and underrepresented municipalities in Tunisia. Aspects of the program focused on various topics, including democracy building, rule of law, and grant acquisition to bring back to their communities.
Amira’s three biggest take-aways from the LDF program are learning social branding, expanding her network, and finding identity and belonging in a successful group. She feels proud of every MEPI alumnus’ accomplishment and she said that being part of such a successful network has expanded her goals both personally and professionally.
Her participation in the LDF also motivated her academic ambitions. Amira is currently pursuing a dual master’s degree in political science and gender studies. Two of her LDF mentors, Najat Rizq and Carmen Jaha, encouraged her to enter the gender studies field and she is currently implementing the knowledge that she learned from them on the intersection of gender studies and media in her classes.
Amira mentioned one of her biggest lessons from participating in the LDF, and the MEPI alumni network is that “When you break your internal doubt, then you can succeed,” and she brings that message to her peers and the YLLS participants she works with daily.

As we were driving home from our Mackay trip, Mum noted a bush lemon tree by the side of the road laden with lemons. I promptly did a u-turn on the road and went back to the tree to pick a fewlemons. There is nothing quite like bush lemons and for the rest of the day I could smell the lemon oil on my fingers, our car too was perfumed with the delicate scent of lemons. It was quite a treat. Later on that day I picked up 5 limes and 5 meyer lemons for $1 at a farm gate stall on the Gympie-Tin Can Bay Rd. We have had quite a few lemon treats since we returned and this is the first one to be posted :)
This recipe is one my Grandmother used to make(hence the title) and was made by my mother with the photographs by me of course.
Grandmum's Cheesecake
Ingredients
Crust
250g Arnott's Scotch Fingers, crushed
45g Copha, melted
45g margarine/butter, melted
Filling
250g cream cheese
400g sweetened condensed milk
1/3c fresh lemon juice
1tbsp gelatine dissolved in 1/4c hot water
Make a crumb crust with the scotch fingers, copha marg/butter. Press into the base of a 7"x11" Lamington tin and refrigerate.
Beat 250g cream cheese till soft, beat in the remaining ingredients. Pour into the prepared crust and chill till set..
Serve with strawberries, passion fruit or just chomp down on a piece as it is.

this picture was an accident. i had some sermon notes in my sketchbook and decided to try the shadow shape thing over the notes because the page was kind of wasted. i love this and hope to do a larger version.

When I was a tiny girl, my mom would always pick me up and set me beside her in her large comfy chair. I would curl up in her lap, holding a piece of her silky nightgown (the one I am wearing in the photo) or robe in my hand as I fell asleep. It was so comforting for some reason and to this day relaxes me if I feel restless. I am no longer small enough to fit in anyone's lap, nor do I have my mother or the chair, but I find the same comfort in the memory of her and the love she had for me. I miss my mother so much these days and so, naturally, this prompt brought about memories of her before any others. :)
