Problems collected as part of the Ghana ThinkTank Process in Mitrovica. We collected problems on the North (Serb) side of the Ibar river, and sent them to the South (Albanian) side of the Ibar to be solved. And vice-versa. This project was supported by CEC Arts Links and SUNY Purchase College School of Art and Design.

"Und wie bist du nach Köln gekommen?", fragt Shirley.
"In Spanien ist die Arbeitslosigkeit sehr hoch.", erzählt Gómez. "Und man braucht Qualifikationen für jeden kleinen Job. Ähh... die habe ich nicht... ich war Chef. Mir wurde langsam klar, dass ich ein ganz schönes Problem habe!
Alle sagten mir: Geh nach Deutschland! Dort ist es viel einfacher einen Job und eine Wohnung zu finden!
Ich kam also in Köln an mit einem kleinen Koffer, in dem mein ganzer Besitz war, der mir noch geblieben war. Das war ungefähr vor drei Monaten.
Aber gar nichts ist einfach in Deutschland - ohne Job keine Wohnung und ohne Wohnung kein Job, so läuft das hier.
Ich brauchte Geld.
Ich hatte noch meinen Hochzeitsanzug im Koffer, ein sentimentales Souvenir, wo ich mich oft fragte: Was schleppst du den überhaupt mit? Aber jetzt erwies er sich als brauchbar. Mit dem Anzug und weiß gefärbtem Gesicht und Händen stand ich wie ein Denkmal und machte Verbeugungen. Auf der Domplatte oder in der Fußgängerzone.
In den Sommerferien waren viele Touristen da und das gesammelte Geld reichte oft auch noch für ein Zimmer in einer Pension.
Aber nach den Ferien wurden die Touristen und das Geld immer weniger, und mir blieb nur noch die Parkbank.
Reglos dazustehen wie ein Denkmal ist sehr anstrengend. Letzte Woche beging ich einen Fehler. Ich war sehr müde und setzte mich auf eine Bank im Park. Es war schon dunkel und ich bin eingeschlafen.
Ich wurde ausgeraubt! Es waren vier Männer, ich habe gekämpft, habe mich gewehrt, aber sie waren in der Überzahl. Koffer weg, Geld weg, Handy weg, Ausweis weg! Sogar die Schuhe haben sie mir abgenommen!
Und das war wohl noch nicht genug - am Samstag kam dieser Kälteeinbruch, ich verbrachte die Nacht an der Lüftung auf der Rückseite von einem Restaurant. Ich dachte, ich erfriere!
Ich war dann auf der Suche nach einer Obdachlosen-Unterkunft, aber die sagten mir, ich soll am Abend wiederkommen, es ist nur zum übernachten.
Und dann habt ihr mich aufgelesen. Dafür sage ich nochmal herzlichen Dank! Und möge Gott euch segnen!"
"And how did you get to Cologne?" asks Shirley.
"Unemployment is very high in Spain," says Gómez. "And you need qualifications for every little job. Er... I don't have them... I was the boss. I slowly realized that I have quite a problem!
Everyone told me: Go to Germany! It's much easier to find a job and an apartment there!
So I arrived in Cologne with a small suitcase containing everything I had left. That was about three months ago.
But nothing is easy in Germany - no job, no apartment, and no apartment, no job, that's how it works here.
I needed money.
I still had my wedding suit in my suitcase, a sentimental souvenir, and I often asked myself: Why are you still carrying that around with you? But now it turned out to be useful. With the suit and my face and hands painted white, I stood like a monument and made bows. On the cathedral square or in the pedestrian zone.
During the summer holidays there were many tourists and the money I collected was often enough for a room in a guest house.
But after the holidays the tourists and money became fewer and fewer, and all I had left was the park bench.
Standing there motionless like a monument is very exhausting. Last week I made a mistake. I was very tired and sat down on a bench in the park. It was already dark and I fell asleep.
I was robbed! There were four men, I fought, I defended myself, but they outnumbered me. My suitcase was gone, my money was gone, my cell phone was gone, my ID was gone! They even took my shoes!
And that was not enough - on Saturday there was a cold snap, I spent the night on the ventilation at the back of a restaurant. I thought I was going to freeze to death!
I then went to look for a homeless shelter, but they told me to come back in the evening, it's only an overnight stay.
And then you picked me up. Thank you again for that! And may God bless you!"
It makes me so happy to see MacDuff having fun. He's an old guy with a lot of health problems and is probably in a lot of pain. It's not easy to get him out for a number of reasons, but when I can make it happen, it makes my week.

ps my son is away for the night so can't ask him either.
Nothing is as dangerous in architecture as dealing with separated problems. If we split life into separated problems we split the possibilities to make good building art.

My high quality bed fell apart... Nathan and I used some rope to tie it back together, the rope held for about three months before the wood frame simply broke. I now sleep on a cot and am much happier for it. Nathan is a good kid just don't let him use your cell phone after he has been drinking. His text messages will get you in trouble.
