Monday we celebrated Oliver's two week check-up, where we learned he was finally gaining weight! Compared to his sister at two weeks, Oliver is still three ounces shy of his original 7 lbs 12 oz birth weight.
Based on his sudden weight gain, things are improving with Ollie's feedings. Granted they still aren't solid, but we are getting there. On Friday, his weight had stalled at 7 lbs 2.5 oz, so the pediatrician suggested I supplement his feedings. She also said he looked really good and she was not concerned that he was a failure to thrive baby. I asked her what concerns to look for since we were entering the weekend.
Then when the Guilford County Home Health nurse came that afternoon, we also discussed the pros and cons of supplementing. I told her that I did not want to supplement. I thought he was doing better each day and his numbers of pees and poops were increasing daily. I explained that I was concerned supplementing would be a hard cycle to break once I started. So she was very supportive and said that ultimately he was my baby and I should do what I felt was best. She also said some babies struggle to gain until the third week or so. It is hard to say what clicks in their system.
So we kept on with our regular practice and on Monday, I went to the pediatric surgeon. Oliver was 7 lbs 6 oz. I was so relieved. I didn't want to explain to anyone why I didn't supplement and then have him not improve. I knew it was a risk.
The surgeon said Oliver's tongue was normal. I was upset, because I did not agree with him. And in fact, the pediatrician the next day said she saw that his tongue was tight. But she agreed that it would stretch and that cutting their tongue is really something only pursued by lactation consultants. I guess it has fallen out of favor. But he weighed 7 lbs 9 oz after a night of nursing. So he continues to improve. Other than baby acne, Oliver looks great.
Bottom line: We saw three medical professionals. Two out of three identified the problem. My prescription was time and patience. Sigh. I'm super tired and last night did not go well. But we will continue to just do what we do.
I will say that I'm glad I didn't supplement his feedings. I didn't have the forethought to realize that I would have had no idea why he gained the weight. Would it have naturally happened (which it did!) or was it the bottle? So I'm glad I went with my gut. And the nurse at my ped's practice agreed and said she was glad I didn't either. I think that mainly comes from being a second-time mom and not being nearly as frantic. Maybe I'm just more exhausted. Hard to say.
Here's hoping for an improved latch soon.
Today we will discuss the most common problems encountered by many mothers during breastfeeding. Let's begin!Breastfeeding RefusalBreastfeeding refusal is one of the common problems encountered in babies. When a baby refuses to take the breast, moves away from it by screaming or crying, or the breastfeeding session lasts only a few minutes, it is called breastfeeding refusal.Mothers often think that their babies will never return to the breast once they refuse it. However, with the mother's patience and effort, it is possible to get the baby back to the breast.Breastfeeding refusal can occur every month and how it is seen varies from baby to baby. While some babies do not take the breast, some cry while breastfeeding, and some suckle for only 5 minutes. Sometimes, they suckle from one breast and refuse the other. The duration of breastfeeding refusal varies from baby to baby, as well as how it is seen. Sometimes it disappears within a few days, and sometimes it can take a few weeks. How Long Does Breastfeeding Refusal Last?Mothers wonder when their babies will return to the breast when they refuse it. There is no average time for when the baby will return to the breast. The duration of breastfeeding refusal varies for each mother and each baby. Why Is My Baby Refusing the Breast? There could be many reasons behind your baby refusing the breast. We will explain these reasons below.-

The TEST vehicle stopped where the track had buckled (left side) and a tie had broke. There were 2 crews standing around ready to fix the problem. The train at the bottom of the Hespeler spur was going to be late going back to Guelph.
With a huge red lei around his neck and a wide grin that could have stretched across Oahu, Larry Fitzgerald held up the gleaming, silver MVP trophy. It sparkled in the sunshine as much as his game.
The only problem: It wasn't the Lombardi Trophy.
Fitzgerald caught five passes for 81 yards and two touchdowns, 44-year-old John Carney kicked two fourth-quarter field goals, and the NFC rallied to a 30-21 victory over the AFC. The Arizona Cardinals' All-Pro receiver, coming off a record-breaking postseason and a spectacular Super Bowl in a loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers, earned MVP honors.
But he said the victory over the AFC, which featured three members of the Steelers' defense, didn't ease the pain from the Super Bowl.
"No, not one bit," he said.
Fitzgerald also took home keys to a new Cadillac.
"I'm just glad we won, that's the most important thing," he said.
On a sweltering day, with 60 percent humidity, Kurt Warner started for the NFC and played just one series before making way for Brees. Warner was just 1-of-2 for 8 yards.
"I would've liked to have won last week and not this week, if I could switch them out," he said.
Fitzgerald caught a 46-yard scoring pass from Drew Brees before the half and a 2-yard TD pass from Eli Manning for the go-ahead score with 4:07 to play.
The NFC defense took care of the rest.
Manning, making his Pro Bowl debut, was 8-of-14 for 111 yards. While big brother Peyton had better stats, 12-of-17 for 151 yards and a TD, Eli got the win.
"He didn't play the whole second half, so it's not about beating my brother, it's just about having fun," Eli Manning said.
The Manning brothers were the first quarterback brothers in Pro Bowl history. And Carney, who was a perfect 3-for-3, became the oldest player in the game's history. He booted a 48-yarder with 2:06 remaining to make it 27-21 and sealed the win with a 26-yarder with 32 seconds to go.
Sunday's all-star game ended a successful 30-year run at Aloha Stadium, with a sellout every year. The Pro Bowl will be played in Miami next year, a week before the Super Bowl. The NFL, which has been looking to increase the profile of the game, hopes to bring the game back to Hawaii.
The players, who spent most of the week by the beach and sipping umbrella-adorned mai tais, were pretty unanimous in wanting the game to return.
For Warner, the question now is whether this was his final game in the NFL or, as a free agent, will he opt to continue playing at age 38?
"I don't know right now," Warner said. "Again, when I have a feeling one way or the other, I'll let everyone else know. I don't have a time frame. This is the first time right now that I am done having to think about football for a while, and I'm going to enjoy that part of it, enjoy my wife, enjoy my kids and then we'll make a decision as soon as we can."
The AFC was looking to hula dance into halftime with a comfortable 14-3 cushion after Kerry Collins connected with Owen Daniels on a 9-yard scoring pass with 28 seconds left in the half.
However, that was more than enough the time for the NFC, with all its weapons.
The NFC took over at its 45 with 19 seconds left after a nice kickoff return by Clifton Smith. They ran two plays before Larry Fitzgerald hauled in Brees' 46-yard bomb with fellow All-Pro Cortland Finnegan on his back as time expired to pull the NFC to 14-10.
It made for two huge end-of-the-half plays in consecutive weeks for Fitzgerald. But this time, rather than trying -- and failing -- to chase down James Harrison on his 100-yard interception returned for a TD, Fitzgerald was the one celebrating.
Fitzgerald also beat Finnegan on his second score.
"These guys are such elite players, it doesn't take much time to get in the groove with these players," Fitzgerald said. "These guys were great."
The usual high-scoring affair surprisingly also featured plenty of defense. Despite rules such as no blitzing linebackers and safeties, the quarterbacks were feeling the heat, at times buried by the defensive line. None of the passes had any room for error on throws against the speedy defensive backs.
The AFC had a chance to take the lead late, but Julius Peppers got in the way. Down by six, the AFC started its drive on its 20 with 4:03 remaining and got to midfield. Peppers then swatted a pass by Jay Cutler with his left hand and came up with the interception that led to Carney's 48-yard field goal.
There were three straight drives ending with a turnover in a span of about 2 minutes in the third quarter alone, including two by Collins.
The second led to the NFC's first lead of the game, 17-14, late in the third quarter. Jared Allen stripped Collins from behind and scooped up the bouncing ball at the AFC 10. All-Pro Adrian Peterson, last year's Pro Bowl MVP, finished it off with a 10-yard run.
Pinned on its 4, the AFC came out firing behind the league MVP. Peyton Manning completed passes of 20, 18, 22, 4, and 6 yards to five players before hitting Tony Gonzalez for the score on a high-arcing, 19-yard pass.
Gonzalez easily outmaneuvered Seattle linebacker Julian Peterson before hauling in the pass and tiptoeing into the end zone. Gonzalez, also an All-Pro, finished with six catches for 98 yards.
On the ensuing series, Robert Mathis stripped Brees and gave possession back to the AFC.
Manning then completed a 22-yarder to Colts teammate Reggie Wayne before the NFC finally started playing some defense.
After the AFC reached the NFC's 31, Peppers squashed Manning -- and gave him a hand to get back up. It is, after all, the Pro Bowl.
Talk about encouraging! this is the sign over the one and only unrinal in the men's room. Would that make this a potty picture? Hahaha
We did have one issue I forgot to mention, after burning some scraps the fire actually went into the tundra and burned unground. We woke up one morning to a pretty serious fire that required nearly a day to put out. We hauled water from the ocean in the Bobcat bucket then set up an assembly line passing a five gallon bucket to douse the fire. This could have spelled disaster.

We had a trip to Prague in January – for Jayne’s birthday - we don’t buy Christmas or birthday presents, we travel instead. We left snowy England for a very, very dull and grey Czech Republic. Yet again I was on a photographic downer looking at the weather forecast, grey is the colour that haunts me. Fortunately it was dull grey and not burnt highlight inducing bright grey. With the grey sky acting like a big diffuser I was going to have deep shadow and contrast to deal with. We had three very short spells of broken cloud which gave us a bit of sun and colour, which I managed to more or less anticipate so we managed to be in decent locations every time – generally somewhere high.
We had been upgraded to a five star hotel, apparently our original choice was flooded. We got compensation and five star hotel upgrade– a first for me. The Art Nouveau Palace has a beautiful interior, with beautiful rooms, the breakfast room was fantastic, as was the breakfast it has to be said. We were able to have an early breakfast so were out on foot just after eight. It was very cold – and dull! We spent the whole week well wrapped up. It drizzled for a day, but never really wet us, it snowed for a day, again we didn’t get wet and the snow didn’t settle. We walked 65 mile, spending plenty of time checking buildings and their interiors out – and coffee shop and bar interiors it has to be said. Although it was dull and sometimes wet I decided that the Camera was staying in my hands for the whole trip. Whenever I put it in my backpack for one reason or another I regret it.
Again, I didn’t look at any photographs of Prague before we got there, I like to just walk and discover, with the DK guidebook in my pocket (which is full of photos it has to be said). We like to get off the beaten track and see the grittier side of the places we visit – within reason! Prague has an incredible tram network, over 1000 trams – with many of them Tatra Eastern Bloc machines. The system seems chaotic but in reality it is incredible with one of the largest networks and highest usages in the world. The trams and cars frequently share the same road space with very little in the way of drama, none of the inexplicable and pathetic constant horn blowing one finds in many countries. Once it became apparent that buildings with a grey blanket as a background were going to be a bit un-inspirational I decided that the trams would be a good focal point instead. Where I have photographed one of the older trams against a background without clues it is easy to imagine that the photos were taken fifty years ago.
The train network also provided photo opportunities. The rolling stock ranges from old Eastern Bloc to very modern double decker’s and pendolinos. There are three stations although we visited the main station and Smichov. The main station interior is art deco and has been renovated by a private company. The exterior and the platforms are very rundown with a grim eastern bloc 1950’s feel –but it works! We discovered to our amusement that we could just walk across multiple lines, no health and safety, just keep your eyes open and don’t walk under a train – you’ll make a mess. Smichov station was grim, it didn’t help that it snowed all day and was grey and bitter. We felt like we were in a 50’s film set in Russia, broken concrete platforms and dereliction. With both stations there was another world underneath them. The underground Metro is running seamlessly and efficiently away beneath your feet. I didn’t have any problems taking photos anywhere but I was very open and obviously a tourist, I didn’t act covertly or suspiciously. There was only one occasion I was stopped and that was in a shopping centre – full of CCTV cameras filming everyone else!
We discovered old and beautiful- and very large- shopping centres hidden away in quite a few places. Brass framed windows and doors, shops thriving, there was a massive camera shop with thousands of second hand cameras, too much to look at. Many of the landmark buildings prevent photography, some make a small charge, some encourage it, the DK guide book gives a good indication regarding camera use. Nothing stops many people though, they just shoot away regardless, usually wanting a picture that includes their self. Prague is surrounded by low hills and has a fair few towers that you can pay a few pounds to go up, so viewpoints are plentiful. I think we visited most of them. I read about the Zizkov Tower, which looks like a Soviet rocket on the horizon and we headed straight for it - after crossing the rail lines! Set in a quiet residential area, there wasn’t a soul about. Two beautiful girls on reception and we parted with a few pounds, into the lift and were on the observation deck with no one else up there. There are fantastic views over the city, but! It is through two layers of not very clean glass so you go for the view rather than sharp panoramas. Still a fascinating place, with a nice café bar and very clean toilets – there are toilets everywhere, usually manned with a fee. Places are well staffed compared with home were three students are supposed to run a 20 screen multiplex cinema.
Graffiti was prominent, no matter how grand the monument, some moron would have daubed it. How do they get away with it in a 24 hour city centre with a strong police presence? The place is very clean, constantly being swept. What did surprise me, was that many buildings, that looked grand and built of stone, from a distance, were actually rendered with very low quality brickwork concealed. When restored the building look very impressive, others are missing the outer render from ground level to a fair height.
I need to cut this short really, I like to put a background story to the photos and although it would be better to individualise it to a specific photo or group of photos I don’t have the time to do that. I do try to give specific detail in the title bar after I have uploaded, this is time consuming enough although I’m pretty proficient at it by now. There are many things I would like to write that should be of interest to anyone thinking of going to Prague but I’ll have to let the pictures do the talking. As usual I am unlikely to be selective enough with my uploads, I’m not very good at leaving photos out so I just upload and be damned.

This is the fifth day of Carnival festivities. There were the more traditional parades having historical themes, then competitions in costume and pan orchestras, the Children’s’ Parade, an adult parade/competition and now this parade on the fifth and last day of Carnival. Some participants have a float-like apparatus they carry, all operated by a single person. And, there is the parade of bands.
A band is an organized group of folks. People join certain bands of their liking. Bands provide the music, support personnel and vehicles as the wee-wee wagon, a truck for drink, and sometimes a truck for rest. It can cost upward to $700 for membership. They usually have a particular theme in dress and the uniforms, or costumes, are sometimes provided. The accompanied “music” is a large truck and trailer stacked high with speakers the size of a VW bug and capable of shattering the most hardy eardrum. I wore earplugs. Enjoy the photographs of the last day of Carnival 2015.
