In haar multidisciplinaire werk onderzoekt Marjolijn Dijkman (1978, Nederland) de positie van de mens ten opzichte van zijn omgeving en zijn onuitputtelijke drive in te grijpen en invloed en macht uit te oefenen op de hem omringende wereld.
Dijkman is geïnteresseerd in verbeeldingen van de toekomst door tijden en culturen heen. Speciaal voor Global Imaginations maakte zij de installatie Cultivating Probability, een verzameling van diverse handzame voorwerpen, verspreid door de uitgestrekte ruimte en onderhevig aan verandering en beweging. Het werk kwam tot stand op basis van onderzoek naar de manier waarop toekomstbeelden en -voorstellingen in verschillende tijden en culturen de mens en zijn kijk op de wereld beïnvloed(d)en. De objecten in de installatie zijn vrije vertalingen van rituele voorwerpen uit de collecties van Museum Volkenkunde en het Afrika Museum in Berg en Dal, die zijn gemaakt om de toekomst te voorspellen, of te bezweren.
Uitgangspunt van een eveneens speciaal voor de tentoonstelling ontwikkeld videowerk zijn verschillende handgebaren die toekomstvoorspellende of –bezwerende handelingen verrichten. De video toont een choreografie van virtuele handgebaren uit uiteenlopende domeinen, van spirituele tot militaire, die zijn losgezongen van hun oorspronkelijke context.

Empirical probability formula Probability is the possibility of occurrence of any event. The probability can be classified as Theoretical probability or Empirical Probability. Now we will look at the definition of Empirical probability. Empirical probability can be defined as prediction of occurrence of an event, which is calculated on basis of collection of empirical evidence.

The Spring Valley crews continue site preparation for high probability digging that will begin in September.
Today, since a long time, I picked up my camera and visit the “Maeslantkering”, Storm Surge Barrier in the New Waterway. And with thanks to the spokesman and a filmcrew from France I had a chance to take a close look at this HUGE barrier.

The barrier is part of the Dutch Deltaplan wich seals the costline against flooding.
If a water level of 3.00 metres above NAP is anticipated for Rotterdam the Storm Surge Barrier in the New Waterway has to be closed. In these circumstances the Storm Surge Barrier computer - the Command and Support System (Dutch acronym BOS) instructs the Control System (BES) to shut the barrier. The BES implements the BOS's commands.
In the event of a storm tide, the docks are filled with water, so that the hollow gates start to float and can be turned into the New Waterway. Once the gates meet, the cavities are filled with water and the gates sink to the bottom, thus sealing off the 360 metre-wide opening. After the high water has passed the gates are pumped out and the structure begins to float again. Once it is certain that the next high water will not be another abnormally high one, the two gates are returned to their docks.
When the New Waterway is sealed off it is no longer possible for shipping to pass. The storm-surge barrier will only be closed in extremely bad weather – in probability once every ten years. A test closure will probably be conducted once a year in order to check the equipment. This will be done when there is little shipping. With the rise in sea levels the storm-surge barrier will need to close more frequently in 50 years time, namely once every five years
To have an idea: the arms of the barrier are longer than the Eiffeltower!
The barrier itself is a 7 storage building!

Cultivating Probability (Orbital Dynamics) installed with a 9,5 meters high ceiling.
The installation Out of Orbit consists of a long pendulum made of full steel and a circular pile of fine silver sand. The trajectory of the pendulum is partly influenced by the rotation of the earth and partly manipulated by two small pieces of robotics who influence the course of the pendulum.
The mesmerizing movement is creating a constantly changing pattern in the sand. The metal point of the pendulum moving in the sand creates a captivating sound that enhances the almost hypnotic effects on it's viewers.

Analysis of shadows cast on the beginning and end of growing season by an 8 story building through the duration of a day.
The seventh graders studied theoretical and experimental probability. The students conducted trials to determine whether two 2-player dice games were fair games (games in which each player has an equal probability of winning). Students identified the sample space in order to calculate the theoretical probabilities; the class then compiled its data in a shared Google Sheet and observed that the experimental probability approached the theoretical probability as the number of trials increased.

Well who would have thought it? After a late afternoon's light show, amongst brooding winter clouds, the morning dawned bright and clear with another beautiful collection of nacreous clouds! The delicate tendrils of the easternmost clouds ripple from the wind shear of the stratosphere.
While they are amazing to look at, we mustn't forget that there is a high probability that they contain nitric acid, not just ice crystals, and that does not bode well for our ozone layer.

MUSTH
A musth elephant, wild or domesticated, is extremely dangerous to humans. Musth (or, alternately spelled, must) is a periodic condition in bull elephants, characterized by a thick tar-like secretion called temporin from the temporal ducts on the sides of the head and, far more notably, by highly aggressive behaviour.
It is accompanied by a significant rise in reproductive hormones - testosterone levels in an elephant in musth can be as much as 60 times greater than in the same elephant at other times. However, whether this hormonal surge is the sole cause of musth, or merely a contributing factor, is unknown: scientific investigation of musth is greatly hindered by the fact that, once under the influence of musth, even the most otherwise placid of elephants may actively try to kill any and all humans.
Similarly, the tar-like secretion remains largely uncharacterised, due to the difficulties of collecting samples for analysis; however, secretions and urine collected from zoo elephants have been shown to contain elevated levels of various highly odorous ketones and aldehydes.

MALA MALA
Mala Mala is the oldest and largest private game reserve in South Africa. One of the first areas of private land to switch from hunting to conservation, it is spread over 33,000 acres (13,500 hectares) of the Mpumalanga Lowveld. The property shares a 12 mile unfenced border with Kruger National Park and contains the longest stretch of the Sand River of any of the Sabi Sand resorts. Its varied habitats - riverine forest, acacia bushveld, and savannah - support a broad selection of wildlife, and provide excellent opportunities for spotting the Big 5 (Buffalo, Elephant, Leopard, Lion & Rhinoceros).
Upon checking in, your game ranger will greet you and accompany you throughout your stay. The rangers, selected for their knowledge of African plant, animal, and bird-life, oversee your personal service. They will be your guide for your twice daily, four-hour game drives, sit with you at meals and impart their knowledge of African wildlife with stories about the individual behavior of animals within the MalaMala reserve.
Game drives are conducted in an open safari vehicle, accompanied by a professional Shangaan tracker. Despite the refined attention to detail, you are immediately aware that you are in Africa and that the unexpected may happen. Breakdowns and stuck vehicles are a hazard of driving through donga and bush, but the staff handles this with aplomb. Radio contact, a large reserve, and excellent guides enhance the probability of seeing the big five. The camp also offers guided bush walks.

Strategic Air Command & Aerospace Museum
The AGM-129A was a subsonic, turbofan-powered, air-launched cruise missile. It was harder to detect and had greater range and accuracy than the AGM-86 Air-Launched Cruise Missile (ALCM). B-52 bombers could carry up to six AGM-129A missiles on each of two external pylons for a total of 12 per aircraft. Launched in quantities against enemy targets, the ACM's difficulty to detect, flight characteristics and range resulted in the high probability that enemy targets would be eliminated. The AGM-129A saw service 1990-2002.

I think that AI image generation is similar in many ways to photography. The camera itself handles all the fine details, but the photographer is in charge of curating the types of images that will be created.
Ultimately, it is all about maximizing the probability that something good will be created.
This is very similar to AI image generation, in terms of the skills involved and what the human does vs. what the machine does.
You can't compare AI image generation to the process of actually making these images from scratch with 3D software or paint/pencils, where the human controls every detail.
However, I think the process really is very similar to that of photography, as I made the case for above. I think that DALL-E 3 is by far the most powerful AI image generation tool currently available.

The probability of principitation was only 20-30%. The rain just came down that forced me to pull out the disposable poncho in a conservation park. All I prayed was no lightning and bolt. Thankfully, I bumped into this fellow while it's raining a bit heavier. It did not fly away. We made acquaitnace through my lens.
